After all the BS that's been going on for months about layoffs and service cuts and cash advances for mass transit, this ass has the audacity to hold it up once again:
- Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he wants more people to ride public transportation for free.
- A day after including free rides for senior citizens in the mass-transit bailout, the governor said Friday he'll propose in his next budget that disabled people also ride without charge.
Blagojevich said he considered including that in the latest mass-transit bill but didn't want to give lawmakers an excuse to hold up the bailout. The measure increases sales and real estate transfer taxes in Chicago and its suburbs to prop up public transit systems.
They can't indict this fool quick enough. And that recall measure he's inspired has a better chance of passing every single day.

I don't know what kind of Superintendent J. D. Weiss will be. But I can tell you with 89% certainty that the next superintendent after Weiss will be appointed from within the Department.
Predictions for 2008

8. Police Headquarters will lose 25% of current manpower returning them to the field. Please respect them out there. they only tried to do the right thing. IAD will have difficulty recruiting personnel to rotate in/out regardless of limited financial offers and special inducements. OCM will slowly disappear.
9. The new Superintendent will make personal visits to roll calls and one huge town hall meeting at the United Center to discuss his goals and objectives bringing the groove back into the CPD.
10. Crime rates will slowly reverse and raise toward the third quarter of this year. Politicians will panic and some more heads will row.

Hold the negative comments, this one has merit. Free is great! Imagine, the more the people depend on public trans, the more it will be used and therefore become necessary part of everyday movement. Once you have record numbers of people using (dependant) public transportation and their autos less: sock it to them: impose stiff fares and watch the revenues pour in.
Now I know the meaning of the phrase, "Short Bus."

I was hoping that we would let the CTA fail. So we pay more taxes so the bums who do not work can ride for free. To get to work using public transporation would take triple the amount of time, who is going to subsidise me for my time and gas?
Raise sales and property taxes. Hmmmm thats going to hurt the seniors on a fixed income the most. Then Blago can come up with some other social program to help them. This is just a power play and grab to inch us one step further to being slaves to these tyranical bastards.

i am no fan of blago but this was a nice jesture on his part. some of these old timers are in dire times. you talk to these people and every day is a struggle. but read between the lines. the raise on taxes is what is funding this deal bottom line. less discretionary income for us. once again whatever raise we manage to get will be negated through back door stuff like this. we will be lucky to break even.
Why not give homes away, cars, whatever anyone wants, just give it to them.
Senior citizens, students and I beleive, disabled, get a reduced rate to ride.
Our transit system is in major trouble let alone the fact we need to upgrade it.
It sounds like Blago the Clown is trying to get votes. Just the same way he did with the healthcare.
Actually, if you think about it, this should have been done years ago.
After all, the buses and trains have to run their routes anyway, what does it matter if seniors ride for free?
The 'loss of revenue' would be theoretical, and only if the exact same number of seniors would be using public transportation, whether they pay or not.
Actual loss of revenue could occur, if, during peak use time periods, seniors were displacing paying customers.
If increased senior use of public transportation is mostly seen after the morning rush period and before the evening rush period, there won't be much actual extra expense and little 'loss' of revenue.
It's like if people in cars were to pick up those they see waiting at bus stops and drop them off down the road, no extra cost involved, because you're going in that direction anyway.
The buses run their routes, the trains travel from one end of the line to the other, so what's the big deal if they're carrying some passengers at no charge?
With gas prices what they are and appear to be likely to remain, seniors on limited incomes really need to catch a break somewhere, why not on something that they need?
Hell, how many seniors might this new 'free ride' policy be taking off the roads?
Less cars, less traffic, less pollution, fewer accidents, more happier seniors, who may now have enough income to eat better, pay their bills and at least feel like they are more appreciated than previously.
Let's all remember to let them have our seats, when the opportunity presents itself.

No problem, seniors will continue to use their CTA/RTA passes/debit cards, just to provide that true count. They'll continue to do what they have been doing, relevant to their proving their ages.
As for Metra, well, Metra's running head counts have always been in the hands of the conductors, so, no changes there.
