Hey! We're "the Public!"

  • Mayor Daley picked Weis as the new superintendent of Chicago's Police Department in December. His appointment must be approved by the full city council, but first the Council's police and fire committee will hold a hearing, which will take place Monday (07 Jan) at 1 p.m. the city council chambers at 121 North LaSalle Street.
We assume this will be like a "Welcome Wagon" event like the head of IPRA had to go through, where the "reverends" and a bunch of their overly rambunctious constituents rail at the nominee and demand tribute in the form of "merit" appointments and promise civil unrest at the first hint of actually following the law and applying fair standards to everything.

It makes for a great first impression. The "what the fuck did I get myself into?" look on their faces is truly a Kodak moment.

Word is that when Jody was here in Chicago last time, he wasn't exactly popular with the other Feds or CPD personnel detailed there. No one was sad to see him go. The words "arrogant", "know-it-all", and "extremely difficult" were used to describe him. However, it's also been said that he was one of the more aggressive Feds, liked doing the "police work" type stuff, and was the kind of guy who wanted to be the first through the door, and wasn't afraid to be physical.

This should be interesting to say the least.

I still say he looks like he has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the close set eyes are a dead give away.

YES!!!... Log Numbers are used against you as determined if you should be in Behavioral Intervention or Personnel Concerns!! That's right...log numbers that the complainant never signed the affidavit to make it a CR number. Contact the girls at FOP to make a stand since they won't do it for you!! And don't vote them in next time there's an election. This should have been taken care of two years ago. Sorry FOP. An unsigned affidavit is not a CR #.

Greetings SCC,

I think a lot of folks in Chicago are in for a Kodak moment. A lot of the entrenched leadership in the department are going to be under pressure. The CPD had severe corruption and mismanagement issues way before affirmative action, merit promotions and the advent of the reverends (i.e the Summerdale scandal). Throughout the history of the department from reign of Richard J. Daley through Harold Washington on to Richard M. Daley the priority of the department was catering to political triads rather than the mission of ensuring that all of the city was safe. Trust me SCC, promotions on the department have always depended on political fealty wether it was during Harold Washington's day or the younger Daley's regime. Lets not only single out the boisterous reverends and their minions for scrutiny. Lets look at the political structure in its entirety as well. Lets look at the Irish Political Godfathers, the emerging Latino Political Tongs, as well as the "brothas". I think you will agree that more than a significant number of personnel (black, white, latin , and yes even asian) on the department above the rank of Sgt. have had to kiss a crusty ring on some politico's finger to get a passing score on a CPD promotion exam. I hope that SAC Jody Weiss' ego is such that he will perhaps want to be known as the guy who cleaned up the CPD and caused long lasting and enduring change. Perhaps he has senate ambitions and that will enable him to ignore the charms of Northwest side poitical blocs, the Westside "gimme some" crews, and the almighty southwest side "its always been ours" political mafias.
In short the CPD is under attack by a variety of insidious forces that block transparent promotional processes, innovative crime fighting measures, and the development of ethical and sagacious leaders. The bottom line is an outsider has a better chance of reforming the department and ensuring that sufficient change will happen that will prevent coppers from becoming like Gangs Specialist Joe M., and the recent crew from 007. Maybe on a new department led by an outsider we will not have guys emulating the corruption of the jailed and disgraced former chief of detectives whose name I cannot recall, from getting promoted. Love your blog SCC! Happy New Years and keep on loving the CPD!

A new four-year contract would give Boston police officers a 14 percent pay hike but require them to pay more for health care, city officials said yesterday

The contract, which the city and union negotiators agreed on Thursday, would also allow officers to live outside the city after a decade of service , shift about two dozen officers from behind their desks to the streets , and toughen drug testing rules.

The new contract also calls for civilians to take over desk jobs held by 23 officers, freeing them to patrol the streets.

We can look forward to things of this nature:

Beginning in 1999, the FBI had conducted five disciplinary investigations of FBI agent Robert Wright and failed to find any wrongdoing. But within days of Wright’s second press conference (see June 2, 2003), they launch yet another investigation about him, claiming his media appearances show he was insubordinate

Senators Charles Grassley (R) and Patrick Leahy (D) quickly hear of this new investigation and co-author a letter to FBI Director Robert Mueller on July 12. The letter states, “We are troubled by the FBI’s apparent haste to launch [a disciplinary] investigation every time an agent speaks publicly about problems within the FBI…

In December 2003, John Roberts, the third highest ranking official in the FBI’s disciplinary office, writes a memo about FBI Assistant Director Robert Jordan and Deputy Assistant Director Jody Weis. The memo claims that Jordan and Weis were overheard saying that Wright’s second press conference (see June 2, 2003) would give them an opportunity to “take him out.”

Roberts claims that Jordan and Weis are misusing the FBI’s disciplinary process to silence and punish whistleblowers like Wright. He also claims that the allegations against Wright were not serious enough for a disciplinary investigation and at most Wright should have faced a written reprimand

It certainly has. IF you are going to stop fellow officers and write tickets - do it right. IF you are going to arrest a member of a police officer's family - do it right. I have seen way too many times where members of officer's families are treated as if they were one of the people we are up against everyday. I can only imagine how those officers treat the general public. OR perhaps it is that they aren't afraid and feel they can have a big mouth.

You are right....it isn't the same department. We used to treat others with respect and dignity no matter what - not anymore. So, I also will get a CR # on an officer if I or one of my family members are treated improperly - JUST DO YOUR JOB RIGHT. Write the ticket, lock them up - do whatever you feel you need to do - i don't have a problem with that.....BUT you better do it right and with respect. Don't be blind to seeing how some officers treat people out here - it just isn't right no matter who you are.

I also agree with his statements that if you get a CR doing the wrong thing then he'll hang you out to dry, but most importantly: He will let the investigation run its course before he makes judgement on the copper. Hopefully the days of, "These are serious allegations and these officers are suspended without pay PENDING THE INVESTIGATION" are over. Our new Sup should say instead, "These are serious allegations and an investigation will be launched, and if these allegations are proven true these officers will be removed from the street and prosecuted."

FROM THE "WHAT WAS THIS ASSHAT THINKING" FILE:

A female employee of the Chicago Office of the Inspector General was charged with theft from a Northwest Side grocery store Saturday afternoon.

About 12:55 p.m. a woman allegedly stole items from a Whole Foods Market grocery store at 6020 N. Cicero Ave., according to police News Affairs Director Monique Bond.

The woman, who is an employee of the Chicago Office of the Inspector General, was charged with misdemeanor retail theft for apparently stealing “grocery items” from the store, Bond said.

According to Inspector General David Hoffman, the employee is 36-year-old Tracy Buckley.

Buckley has worked for the Inspector General’s office since Jan. 18, 1994. As of January 2006, Buckley was a supervising investigator with the office.

Further details were not available, according to Bond.

When I am elected Califate of the Islamic States of America the arrest of that Senior Investigator from the Inspector General's Office will be handled this way.
