Should be an interesting follow up this afternoon following the questioning by these intellectual giants. And the rumors that Skahill is telling everyone and their brother that she's already been guaranteed the First Deputy spot grow stronger every minute.

Answer: There is no racism or race profiling within the department,it took someone with money to waste to find that out the hard way. As far as brutality, those were few and far between and only proved as a political tool for the right place at the right time.

We protect them and maintain order in everyday society so they can go about their everyday lives unmolested. Did you read the article in sundays Trib about the program on the west side where a social service agency was getting jobs for ex-cons? They were bee keepers and got jobs with janitorial agencies. The bee keeper part was front page about a month ago, the trib profiled 2 guys who found their salvation in bee keeping. Well guess what? Both are out of the program! One got locked up for possession with intent (weed) and the other got fired 3 times for being "difficult" and "pushing" a co worker. The spokesman from the social service agency can't believe that these guys tossed this golden opportunity. Another dose of reality for people who tried to do good, but got shit on in the process. In their defense, they have had some successes as well. Nice try guys, welcome to the real world.

-NEVER did a shift in plainclothes and your Cr.#s are low and disciplinary history too (just don't bring up your arrest activity)

-Tell him your unifrom is perfect and your appearance OUTSTANDING! Another dispatch on the Freakonomics effect: University of Chicago economist Steven Levitt (Mr. Freakonomics himself) and his collaborator Sudhir Venkatesh, a Columbia University sociologist who previously worked with Levitt to measure the average wages of street-level drug dealers (pdf), have teamed up to study the economics of street prostitutes in Chicago.
Their recent working paper (pdf), which they presented at this weekend's ASSA conference (the yearly get-together where social scientists from around the world preview their research) in New Orleans, is based on surveys conducted with prostitutes and pimps in Chicago neighborhoods and incident data from the Chicago Police Department. The findings? Street prostitution yields an average wage of $27 an hour, hardly worth it considering the extraordinary occupational hazards.
What's particularly interesting is the authors' section on bargaining and the law. They estimate that roughly 3 percent of all tricks performed by prostitutes who aren't working with pimps are freebies given to police to avoid arrest. In fact, prostitutes get officially arrested only once per 450 tricks or so, leading the authors to conclude that "a prostitute is more likely to have sex with a police officer than to get officially arrested by one." When freebies given to gang members are factored in, about one in 20 tricks go solely for protection and the "privilege" of plying their trade.
The most depressing news is the woeful lack of condom use. Just as with recent studies of Mexican and Indian prostitutes, Levitt and Venkatesh find that payments go up substantially when condoms aren't used. And plenty of johns are apparently happy to pay the premium: Condoms only get used about 20 percent of the time, the authors estimate. Some protection, it seems, is worth a freebie; others go out the window for a few extra dollars.

Part of the problem is that in the communities that cry about "confrontational" police, people believe that the first to call the police is free from being arrested.
I have locked up untold callers because the investigation determined that they were the offending subject. No matter how it is explained they don't understand.
From there it is all down hill, actually, the bottom of the hill.

Off topic, but I was passing through 018 today when I saw 1813 driving with a new light bar and beat tag. The beat tag was red digital numbers like a glowing billboard for people to see the beat tag to make complaints. Someone told me in was tied in somehow with the GPS systems and I also heard the WC has to change the number. Any other districts have these? I thought 014 was always one of the pilot program districts.

I work in a district in area 2 & let me tell you this. If Skahill gets 1st deputy, LOOKOUT! This idiot is clueless, and wouldn't know police work if it hit her in the head! Shields let the commanders run their districts 99% of the time. Skahill is hands on 99% of the time. Although maybe we're better off if she does get it...she'll be out of area 2!

I finally saw it! 2 Hair-gel wearing Tac guys walking on Van Bruin at Federal today. 2 big boys wearin there leather coats. I can remember when I used to stop people of color and they would wail "but I got a job!" as if that gets the black man an automatic free pass, to be employed. They never realize that where I was raised people all have jobs, people are expected to have jobs and support themselves and their families.

I recall a woman of color who watched her dope dealing man get killed by the police after he shoved a gun in a tact officer's gut. She complained bitterly that he was the only one working in the family, dope dealing was what she meant by "work."
She blamed the police in the death by telling the media that the police wouldn't have had to kill the poor common law hubby if they searched him better and found the gun.
As it is, the PO was fine and had the presence of mind the hold the semi-auto tightly against his stomach thereby preventing it from being fired while his partner put the 6 gun to home boy's head and lights out.
It was quite a nice mess but both officers went home and shithead went to the ME's office. The way it should be.
Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) said he plans to make a renewed push to realign police beats, something Daley has fiercely resisted for years.
Answer: If it's not broke, why try to fix it.

Why is it acceptable that a black Ald. be allowed to ask Weis the level of commitment that he had to making his first deputy black, but if a white Ald. were to say "are you commited to making the first deputy white?" that the latter of the two would be considered a racist question. Wtf people, the civil rights movement was a struggle to gain equality, for those of you who don't know what that means it means a level playing field. Surely Ald. Lyle wasn't asking that someone be promoted solely on their skin color? Was she? Now Commander Franklin, I don't like her or many Alderman that much either, but from what I hear, her complaints are all valid. How about the morale of your officers? You can't blame that on the Alderman. What about your index crimes going up? You can't blame that on the Alderman either. What about the community thinking you are an arrogant asshole? Well, that is on you again. You were promoted well beyond your level of competence. Take Captain's pay and run!
