Three 12-hour Days?

  • Newly appointed Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis is exploring the possibility of asking rank-and-file officers to work 12-hour shifts three days a week to bolster morale and shorten medical leaves, officials said Tuesday.

With longer hours fewer days a week, police officers who now work eight-hour shifts would have more time to decompress and spend with their families, and they might be less inclined to go drinking after work, researchers contend.

Interesting. What are the start times? Is this standard? Office personnel too? Rotating days off or are you stuck working weekends for the next decade? What about manpower reductions?

Lots of questions, but lots of opportunities, too.

Oh, and good to see the readers are getting us accurate info:
  • Weis decided to explore the possibility of a Los Angeles-style, 12-hour shift after a give-and-take last week with officers in the 21st District, Bond said. Weis has been appearing at roll calls -- and dismissing police supervisors from that discussion -- to get his finger on the pulse of officers on the street.

Had 10 hour days in housing, Loved it hope this is going to happen and fuck the FOP if they want us to have a 6 day work week. When do they work 6 days? The sixth day sucks! I don't care if I get three days off after 6. I want 3 and 3 3 and 3 3 and 4. Something like the 10 hour days in housing went. The city can work it out if they want. Let's vote for CHANGE....

I would vote for the 12 hour day or 10 hour day for that matter. But it would have to be rotating. People need to have weekends off. If only the senior officers (and I am one of these with 17 years on) get the weekends off and the newer officer get tues, wed, thursday off, then I am voting no. This is a good idea that needs to be explored.

12 hours days? What happens when you have to work overtime on something? Now your at 15, 15 or 16 hours and have to report back with as little as 4 hours of sleep?
Could the city force you to come back if you worked 18 to 20 hours OT?

I'd rather work ten hours and have a little wiggle room at the end.

12 hours dealing with the wildebeast is just too long.

Come on FOP, you don't speak for us with comments like the one below. Don't act like officers don't want this without asking us first. This is something thousands of officers would be interested in. Whether the majority would be -- who knows. Lets vote!!!!

"Twelve hours in a beat car in Chicago -- in most areas of the city -- is a very long work day. It has worked in other areas of the country. But it's something that has to be analyzed," said Donahue, who is pushing for a fixed schedule of six-days-on and three-days-off in contract talks with the city.

It's time to take a serious look at the FOP leaders. They have no right to push for our current scedule without asking us if we want to take a look at the 12 or 10 hour workdays. I've been quietly supportive of the FOP for 13 years because overall I think they have done a decent job even though many of you will disagree. But their statements on this has got me upset and make me wonder how out of touch they are with the blue shirts.

twelve hour days make sense effectively making cpd a two watch deal. the problem with the ten hour day was the four hour overlap. not enough equipment to cover 10 hour day deal. i'm all for it. you are going to work 2080 hours a year anyway you slice it. three less trips a week to and from station. anything is better than six in a row.

Forget 10 hours, because you get set days off. Alot of suburbs have 12 hour shifts and they love it. You get every other weekend off (and it's a three day weekend) with the 12 hours shifts. Don't get me wrong, the 12 hour days will consist of work & sleep and not much time for anything else. But, being off more days in a week and every other weekend will be great. Hopefully the FOP and guys in this department who resist any change will not ruin this option for us.

The problem at public housing was equipment and change time. We rarely worked 10 hours. That's what made it easy.

At the crime lab they work 10 hours but they just sit around and wait to be sent out.

In patrol; you can't have the officers running around doing all the unnecessary political crap and then expect them to have the stamina to last a true 12 hours.

J-Fed For president. It would be nice to see a change. the city and FOP have been talking about shift changes for the last eight to ten years. Wow wouldn't it be something if J-Fed just walks in and could get this done?
I have never seen a copper with the 12hour schedule that didn't love it. 12 hours in a car seems like a long time, but your not getting up, getting dressed, driving to work, going to stand in roll call 6-days in a row. Getting there is half the battle.
If your sgt. said " if you can stay tonight and work 4 hours more you can have off tomorrow" how many would say NO?
There is no doubt that a new schedule, any new schedule, would adversely affect some members. Not everyone could be pleased, but the schedule that we have now sucks. I have missed a lot of family events parties, soccer games, baseball games etc etc...over the last 15 years. There probably isn't anyone with children who doesn't regret making some event or another because of this job. This schedule would help reduce the family time missed by too many of us. Side jobs and school will adjust to the schedule and we all would adapt.
I have never found another cop who has worked the 12-hour and did not love it. (most have said that they would never go back to a 8 or 10 hour schedule).

As an officer working in 004, I can say that going to three 12 hr days is by far the worst idea ever! Let me explain. In 004 we have thugs crossing the Indiana border into Chicago on a regular basis. Those of us living on Beat 433 have zero protection against these criminals. Why?
The DC and his Captain cronies could care less about the Beat. They place all of their officers and emphasis on the ghetto rats. My family and I do not want to have violence enacted towards us, just because the manning roster doesn't add up. 12 hr days will bring even less productivity. We must fight the 12 hr days at all costs. People living in 433 must unite and say no to the possibility of three 12 hr days!!!

If patrol went to a 12 hour day it would be fantastic. They would have to hire more police to cover shortage which is good for the economy and the housing market in Chicago. It's good for Dickhead's tax base also. Assuming it extended to the Detective Division (because Dicks are not career service ranks so they should get the work week as well) then they would have to promote more detectives. That would be good for patrolmen who have any desire to do something different. Overall, its a win for everyone. I guess that means that the mayor will say no.

By the way, being a detective, I would be willing to go back to patrol for a shot at a 3 day work week. The city could keep its D2A pay. Besides many of the sergeants in A2 think that they are in patrol and want to run the unit like its patrol (if that's the case, boys, go back to patrol; you won't be missed).

Well now! Superintendent Jody Weiss is going to find out exactly why the police officers are the way they are.

For years and years, the patrol officers, "the backbone of the police department" acccording to previous brass, have been asking, requesting, begging for ANY SCHEDULE which gets them out of working SIX DAYS IN A ROW.

I recall hearing the strategy of the brass who negotiate the contracts: "They'll get 10 hour days after hell freezes over, thaws out, and freezes over again. Ha Ha Ha!"

The eight-hour day, coupled with the six day work week,
+
"don't make an arrest anytime within two hours of the end of your tour - we don't like it when you make us sign overtime slips, otherwise the commander gets mad at me"
+
"you better come in with some arrests if you want to keep your car assignment"
+
"you better make lots of arrests if you want to get on tactical"
+
blah, blah, blah,
=
Chicago Police Management, 1950's style! Oh, it's the Twenty-First Century? Well, that's fine for the rest of society, but we are the police and the patrolman has always been treated poorly. That way, it motivates the "good guys" to work "extra hard" which really helps out the patrol division - WAIT!!! It doesn't, because then these guys and gals get their transfers to TRU and SOG and TF and GANGS, etc, so that they can concentrate their oh, so wonderful efforts on a SPECIFIC group of criminals. And THAT's the way we are able to create a police department with 25 districts, but with 75 commanders, with their attendant "command" staffs = daytime dollies = people to pick up their dry cleaning etc.

Have you ever just looked at this subject in a simple way?

There are twenty-five districts.

There are (supposed to be) 12,500 officerS, including supervisors.

Divide 12,500 by 25 = 500!

Yes! FIVE HUNDRED police officers, sergeants, lieutenants, captains and command staff PER DISTRICT!

Take out fifteen percent for supervisors, you still have 425 officers per district.

Divide the 425 officers into the two watches:
Days = 100
4 PM to 4 AM = 325
4 AM to 4 PM = 100

Forget about the space holders from 4am to 4pm, we all know that's when the criminals are sleeping.

For the 325 officers working during the time when the shit really hits the fan, we would have

12+12+12 = 36 hours working
+ RDO + RDO + RDO + RDO = 1 work week;
which means that only 3/7 ths of the officer are working at any one time.

3/7 ths of 325 = 139

Subtract for furloughs:
(Average 24 days) 365 / 24 = 15 time slots.

Therefore, 14/15ths of the remaining officers are available to work:

139 x 14/15ths = 129.73 officers

subtract 9.73 for the occasional stubbed toe, etc = 120 officers available =

12 beats per district = TEN OFFICERS PER BEAT!!!

TEN OFFICERS PER BEAT - WORKING!

TEN OFFICERS PER BEAT - ON DUTY!

TEN OFFICERS PER BEAT - TO ACTUALLY IDENTIFY THE CRIMINALS WHO ARE TEARING THIS CITY APART, ONE ALUMINUM GUTTER AT A TIME;
ONE STABBING AT A TIME;
ONE SHOOTING AT A TIME;
ONE TRAFFIC VIOLATION AT A TIME;

And guess what happens when all of the criminals are afraid to come out and play?

The normal, hard-working, agreeable, soft-spoken, kind and caring people of this city would actually be able TO GO OUTSIDE OF THEIR HOMES, EVEN AFTER 4PM!

IMAGINE THAT!

Have any of the politicians, police brass, reporters and University of Chicago Intellectuals ever thought about what it would be like to live in a city FEARLESSLY?

Oh, Wait! Fear is what sells newspapers. Fear is what sells radio! Fear is what sells TV!!!

What could I have been thinking?

Nevermind. Go back to sleep.

guys and gals... please. if anything we should push for the 4 10 hour days. if we work 12 hour days that will be way to much time. first point, taking a day now will cost you 12 hours time due to take. 2nd point, opportunities to get overtime will almost disappear. 3rd, your ot that you would get for court would be gone unless it is on an rdo. if you start at 12 in the afternoon and all of your calls are for 1330, all that ot will be gone. if your on days, the same will happen if you have the early call. plus, there will only be two watches. everyone on third watch will be split up and most will be sent to the midnight shift which will be 12am to 12pm....anyone who gets jammed with that shift will surely have no life at all. jody, bad idea. i like the thought of 4 10 hour days or what the fop is asking for, 6 days on but three off everyweek with a 4 day off every 6th week.... please no 3 12 hour days

Whether it be 12 hour days or 10 hour days I am all for it. The 10 hour schedule in housing was far better than any 6 day work week. You had 3 four day weekends in a row with that schedule. Add 1 day time due to that and you had 5 days off in a row. Work a Holiday and you received 15 hours on the books if you wanted it that way. Worried about your part time job with the longer hours? You have more days off to work any other job. You have to be crazy not to want the 10 or 12 hour days if offered.

Just another look at the goofs running this dept. not interested of their greatest assest--the Policeman. Great job Jody, keep it up... Change this 6 day garbage!!!

off topic:looks like G.L. at Ohare needs to spend a little more time on obedience w/ canine Arnold and a little less time at Gail's desk, after all these years we all thought Arnold was just a stuffed animal with a pre-recorded barking voice box. p.s. as far as the 12 hour days you would be lucky to get a 12 hour week from this guy. :-)

Golden opportunity to get rid of the six day work week and people are already getting nervous. Stop and think. You won't lose your weekends, you will only gain more time off to do what you want. Desk crews would probably continue to work 8 hours a day 6 day work week. If you have kids to take care of, or something else? Get on the desk. That is where most of these people are anyways.

i did the 10 hour days a couple years ago with the pilot program and have been left with a severe depression ever since the program was terminated. 3 days off in a row for 4 weeks, then 3 weeks with 4 day weekends... I LOVED IT.

it worked out to like- 52 less work days a year.

i think 12 hours days would be even better. i know a lot of people will complain, but people will adjust.

BRING ON THE 12 HOUR DAYS!!!

Let's hope we can make this a reality soon. The FOP has been playing games with this issue for the last 12 years! This department needs a morale boost in the worst way. It has gotten so bad, I have recently considered quiting the job altogether. Eliminating the 6 day schedule would definitely improve our quality of life.

The idea of 12 hour tours sounds interesting.

Meanwhile, 19th Squad detectives are searching for a man that used a meat cleaver to hack psychologist Kathryn Faughey to death in her office at 435 E. 79th St. on the Upper East Side last night.

In an unrelated NYPD RANT thread entitled "Please Ed Ban Crimefile", apparently some posters are reacting to a controversial "Crimefile" post entitled "History Would Suggest It's Time For Another U.S. President To Be Assassinated."

"Crimefile" uses the name Paul Huebl and claims to have once been a MOS with the Chicago PD.

Worked a 12 hour day before on a different department, it went like this:
Worked Monday, Tuesday, off Wednesday, Thursday, worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday, off Monday, Tuesday, worked Wednesday, Thursday, off Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Two week cycle, every other weekend off, never work more than 3 days in a row. It is long days, forget side job’s, but you have a lot more RDO’s to work those same jobs. All in all a lot better then current schedule and it will increase manpower in the districts immediately, only issue is they will need more cars right from the start. Solves more problems than it creates.

Why not five 8-hour days and three off? Younger police and busy Districts have too much stress put on them already. Increasing the hours to 10 or 12 will just cause more Officer Safety issues in the long run. Who wants to be that Officer in a shootout or physical altercation at hour 9, 10, or 11? The city does not loose anything by going to five on and three off. I'm sure the City would save money spent on lawsuits (stress related), medical roll, and man power allocation.

** 12 HOUR SUPPORTER SAYS **

Come on people. We need this change. 12 on is not that bad at all. Were already dressed and ready to play. What’s a couple more hours.

I understand that some days might drag a bit, especially if your stuck riding with some mope, but the thought of only having to get dressed 3 times a week and 3 or 4 off it out standing!

The FOP thinks we want this stupid 6th work day, they haven’t asked the membership. At least nothing asked at roll call or questioner sent to my house. Jody brings up some great points. How many people you know call in for the 6th day. I’ve done it. Let he who is without sin throw the first stone. Be honest.

I worked California Highway Patrol for 3 years before getting married and following my wife here like a lost puppy dog. Took this job and wish I could go back to CA. 12 hour shifts were awesome!!

Seemed like after 3 days went bye, we were wondering where the time went, and presto, 4 days off.

Now if we can only get rid of Da Mayor and his residency bullshit!

Hello! 12 Hour Days? Sounds great! Can you imagine adding on one more comp day or even two? And Poof! You have about a week off!

Hell yeah! Mini Vacations Less Stress.

One of the things we'd have to worry about is Picking your partner. Cause I cant imagine sitting in a squad car with some smelly ass, lazy fuck, who thinks he's/She's better than you or worst, "a Know it all".

Then there's that one asshole micromanaging Sgt that we'd have to worry about on the watch. We all know there's always one and in some cases two on a watch.

2/13/2008 03:27:00 PM

12 Hour Days?

Shit yeah!

And it's easy for me to say cause I was around when we actually rotated, AND that's when there was way more comaradre than there is today - way more!

We'd be like Firemen. With all those extra days off. Only we get to go home, and as we all know, we do a hell of a lot more in a week than a Fireman does in a year or two. Big difference.

All you get is some Ferris Bueller phone message!

They can keep their 8 Hour, Weekends, and Holidays Off. 12 Hours would be just to good for them.

Several observations from the Academy graduation today...

1. Da Mayor snubbed the Sup and the police once again. Bullshit he was sick or that the is our biggest fan.

2. Even though some don't want J-Fed to wear the uniform, he was the best dress. All you fat slobs buy a new uniform or better yet loose weight.

3. The graduation address, given by the PPO's, was pure HQ/City Hall propaganda. Why not let them write their own speech?

4. Could they pick a more convenient place to have the graduation than Navy Pier? And to make all those friends and family pay $20.00 to park. Once again, the mayor sticks it in our ass.

5. Looks like the Sup has been brainwashed already. He is using the mantra "guns, gangs and drugs." And believes in CAPS.

6. Our Honor Guard and Pipes and Drums are top notch.

===================================

I agree 12 hours is a long shift, but it'd be worth it to have the next 2 off.

The beat officers I am sure would back it if you thre something in there for them (a longer lunch, a third personal, something).

Off Topic:

Mayor Daley’s plan to privatize Midway Airport to generate billions to shore up city pensions and rebuild Chicago’s aging infrastructure is cleared for take-off: Five of seven airlines have signed off on the deal, the first of its kind in the nation.

Daley has already raked in a combined $2.4 billion by privatizing the Chicago Skyway and downtown parking garages. He’s now put a For Sale sign on parking meters.

But Midway would be the biggest transaction of all, generating as much as $3 billion.

===================================

$5.4 billion. What do you want to bet hardly any of it goes to fund pensions? It will go to Daley's pet projects, and to his relative's investments.

If John Q Taxpayer only knew how poorly the city has funded these pensions, and how much taxpayers are on the line for, they would demand his head!

I would like the different hours but I wouldn't like to rotate watches.

I'm somewhat new & I'm wondering...has it always, ALWAYS been six days straight w/ 2 off?

I know other major depts have more favorable work schedules.

Does anyone know if LA has fixed days off?

If fop wants to work 6 days in a row let them, i'll take the 12 hour days.

LA has both three 12's or 4 10's...the LA copper I spoke with last year while I was out there told me the three 12's are very popular.

I'd be more than glad to work 12 hours in a beat car, even on a fixed day off group, if that I means I have FOUR, F-O-U-R days off in a row! That's like a vacation in itself!

Jody, if you're reading this I wanna party with you!

12 hours is just too long in the beat car. Why did 10 hour days fail in the 025 pilot program? Four 10 hour days would be great

This is the place to be the police,Jackson,Wyoming. YOu can have a six-figure income and get a subsidized house. You have to love socialsim.

Subsidized housing for the 'rich'
A six-figure household income is more than enough to get by in most places. But not in Jackson, Wyo., where the median home price is $1.2 million and a joint income of $100,000 is still low enough to qualify for certain public housing assistance. To get teachers, police officers and firefighters to live in town, officials have a creative approach: subsidizing housing for people with incomes up to six figures.

Brook and Jessica Yeomans recently bought their town house with views of the Wyoming mountains for $230,000, a far cry from its $750,000 market price.

''We were so lucky,'' said Brook Yeomans, a middle school teacher. ''Affordable housing has basically allowed us to have a family here.''

Do the Cook County Sheriff's Police still have the 10 hour day? What about the ISP,they used to work tens to. Are there any surrounding departments working twelves?

"I would vote for the 12 hour day or 10 hour day for that matter. But it would have to be rotating. People need to have weekends off.....This is a good idea that needs to be explored."

My sentiments exactly. Problem is any work schedule that is adds up to 7 will NOT rotate your days off.
(4 and 3, 5 and 2, 3 and 4, you get the idea)
Your days off now rotate because the schedule is 8 days. 6 on 2 off....

I would never vote for anything with fixed days off. How would you like to be the 2 year wonder working EVERY Thurs,Fri,Sat night in some ghetto district? I think a 12 hour tour in any district, regardless of your starting time, that is consistantly in a RAP would be an extremely long day.

Anyone against the 12 hour day schedule needs to wake up this is a great great great schedule. Just ask anyone on a department that has switched to it (Many departments have), they would never go back.

I don't know if I would like the 3 twelve hour days, but I would most certainly go for 4 ten hour days with rotating days off. We need to get rid of the six day work week.

""I have missed a lot of family events parties, soccer games, baseball games etc etc...over the last 15 years. There probably isn't anyone with children who doesn't regret making some event or another because of this job. This schedule would help reduce the family time missed by too many of us""

You'll be missing even more if you are working every Fri, Sat and Sun.

Think this through....

Think about the time you will save every week getting ready for work 3days less.

Think about the savings in gas and travel time to work the extra 3 days a week.

Think about the significant reduction in wear and tear on your vehicle, mileage, uniforms, equipment by working 3 days less per week.

This is an all around winner,12 hour days are a great idea.

Probably have a better chance locating the exact location of the Lochness Monster than getting the answer to that one.

Now how often did those of you who think the 10 hour day was the greatest thing in the world actually checked off at 10hours and 15minutes after the start of your tour, or was this great because you were GONE after 8hours and 55minutes????????

Chew on this....Would you like to swipe in and not out for 6 days on and 3 off or swipe in and out for
3 on and 4 off???

Suffolk County New York (Hamptons, Smith Town, etv.) has a great 3 dasy on, 4 off, 4 days on 3 off schedule with 8 hour days. they're all happy! Ofcourse they're starting salary $80k after 2 years.

**I don't understand why it's so difficult to figure out a schedule so we work 8 hour days 5 days a week!

I'm all for any change that gives more days off.I would think you would still have to have extra shifts for the roll call layover. How about 3a.m.-3p.m. and 4a.m.-4p.m. and vice versa for the late watch. The only problem is ot would be virtually nonexsistent with your court probably taking place during your work hours or the fact is who would want to go to court after working a 12 hour day.I definately would rather go 10 hour days. plus you save less time when need to burn a day.The bright side is,I guess if you work a holiday you could get an extra 6 hour paycheck!!

12 hrs. is bullshit, you start at 0700 and aren't done until 1900? what the hell is left of your day,you have to go to sleep in a couple of hours to get up for the next day.

**I'm with you. 0800 til 2000. Your day is shot. No time with the family.

Mark Donahue is telling the city the FOP is against a 12 hr / 3 day work week?

**No He Did Not. He just said that's a long day for being in a beat car in a busy district. He said he would take it into consideration. He Did Not say Yay or Nay!
If you look at the contract proposal, the FOP has again proposed a 10 hour work day.

If they are going to try the 12 hour day, I think they should pilot it for about 3 months in busy districts in the summer months & then come back to see if it worked. Because if you vote for it and working 12 hours kicks your ass, there's no turning back.
