Related?

  • Chicago police and school officials are hoping parents will take heed of a new curfew that goes into effect Saturday night and ensure that their children are home on time.

The new law requires that youths ages 17 and younger be home a half an hour earlier, at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturday and 10 p.m. the rest of the week.
All well and good. But we're so shorthanded, enforcing this new rule will be a feat of mind bending flexibility that we aren't sure is going to happen. And what about this?
  • A 12-year-old girl was shot and wounded on the city's Southeast Side in what police described as a gang-related incident, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. in the 8900 block of South Houston Avenue, police said.

The girl was running away from the gunfire when she was struck by a bullet in her lower back
Why not 9pm curfews? 830pm curfews?

When do you stop drawing the line?

You are right about being short-handed. I cannot believe the public still believes the bullshit fed to them about us having 13,500 officers.

It is more like 9,000. Ask anyone in the finance section that cuts the checks.

Minus how many hundred for being exempts, how many thousands for being bosses/sergeants, how many thousands for pushing desks/lockups, how many hundreds for working in units thats don't see the streets (academy, headquarters, erps, courts, etc), how many hundreds for being detectives, ET's, etc.

I'd like to see the REAL number of PO's on the street, has to be closer to 5,000.

We are out-manned, out-gunned and the thugs know it. They can smell the blood in the water.

Get ready for a bloody spring/summer Chicago!

Kind of as a side note on the subject of shorthanded, is it interesting to note that if you look into the personnel tables in CLEARDW and pull all the employees who are P for police and A for active member, you'll see 13,498 people listed as working police personnel? I can recall a time a little over a year ago when if you did this you'd see just under 10000 names pulled. Seeing as how we've only lost more officers rather than add to the compliment, I wonder who's idea it was to corrupt the tables to support the fabricated number of 13,500? Maybe it was done so the media has no way of getting hold of the real count of active police officers so they can't force Daley to account for the tax money taken from the citizens to pay for 13,500 officers when the real number is closer to 9300? Maybe this list should be made available to all districts and units so they can subtract those they know to be on disability and retired to accurately reflect the number of paychecks cut on the 1st & 16th.

a couple of things: 1) we hear some about the curfew "index" (i.e., some boss says, our curfews are "down"), a number based on some ratio of index crimes to (?); has anyone ever examined, in a rational and detailed fashion, this index to any other set of numbers/crimes, in an analysis that makes any sense? (in other words, what goof came up with this index, and can they justify it based on a rational mathematical analysis); 2) has the city ever published the total numbers of crime victims who are under curfew age, and whose incidents occurred during curfew hours, then compared those numbers to: a) total crimes during the time frame and victimization based on victim age; b) total numbers of the "underage" population of the city; 3) maybe the city can make a statement to the effect that, although it's important that parents take (or try to take) control of their children, we realize that in many situations, there is no family, so....we (the liberal establishment) will be your family; we will try and keep you alive, at least until you reach adulthood, where you will probably (no guarantees, though) will get locked up for something, or join the permanent underclass....

I rarely post on this blog. Enough is enough and I have had enough of the Tobias bashing. I know 1 tact Sgt in 017 who happens to play hockey. I won't mention his name or initials. He is a strange dude though.

That Sgt has no connection to Tobias!!!!!!!!!! If knowing somebodys name is a connection then hell, I have alot of connections. I play hockey for the CPD. I don't have a connection with Tobias other than him knowing my name. The CPD FOP Stars Hockey Club has 3 teams with over 60 police officers on the teams. I guess Tobias has so much clout that all 60 players are in Units or Merit promotions. That couldn't be further from the truth. Hell there are probably 40 former CPD FOP Stars Hockey Club members on the job. I guess all those guys are in merit/clout spots to.

Whoever wrote the comment about the 017th dist Tact Sgt is a typical crybaby on this job.

No facts all talk. The Sgt in 017 could have done something dumb, it wouldn't suprise me. That fact that he plays hockey is meaningless.

Come on, do you actualy think that any of this shit (cerfew, dope baggies, impounds, anov, tickets...) has ANYTHING to do with stoping or solving any type of crime? The most of the police have been, or soon will be nothing but armed revenue collectors. The Mayor is crying "poor". The City is over budget. The price of EVERYTHING is going up (gas, county tax, the tickets we hand out, food...) and we are going to continue to pimp ourselves for a City Govt that could give a fuck less about us, to a public that is less than thankfull. But maby I'm wrong.

What's up with Brown's apparent demotion? Anybody have the inside scoop on that? It seems to be pretty hush-hush, at least for now.
I'm hearing that J-Fed wants to phase out the ADS position completely, feels it's a waste of time & money when the Deputy Chiefs can be sent out to do essentially the same thing.
Anyone else hear anything about Alexander and Moran moving up?
I work at Headquarters and haven't heard that discussed at all.

From the perspective of a parent living next door to juvenile delinquents, I would welcome the extra work by police to enforce the curfew . . . did you ever think that by NOT doing your job, you are possibly screwing the family of a fellow officer?  These jerks next door aren't out shooting up the neighborhood (yet) but they are a nuisance and driving me nuts and keeping my children up at night with their nonsense behavior.  I know the department is understaffed, underpaid, and overworked, and under-appreciated . . . I feel for you all, I really do, your job sucks and I sure as hell couldn't ever do it.  But each of you lives in this shithole of a city, and many of you have families . . . what effect does it have on them when the police decide not to enforce a law because it is too much of a pain?  My significant other is on the job and because of that, I cannot complain about rude neighbors or call on the police to help settle neighborhood feuds. My significant other is too busy working to help out with these issues. I rely on my beat coppers to help me out, but it's not happening. What's a copper's family to do? Please think of who you MIGHT be helping when you do decide to enforce the "little" and "meaningless" and "pain-in-the-ass" rules we all SHOULD be living by without the help of the police. Like everything else that helps make the world a better place, parenting is not on the "cool" list of things to do. And that's a shame . . . that common decency and sense just seem to escape today's parents. Please don't let it be something that also escapes today's police. I am so thankful for all that each and everyone of you do . . . putting your life out there everyday for a bunch of people that don't appreciate it. You all are the real heroes. So, with that said, I implore you to not forget about the wives and husbands left at home . . . left to fight the same battle against stupidity, but without any of the resources available to you. Please stand up for us and do what you can to make life in this shithole of a city better. "Hey honey, how many more years until retirement?" hehehe Keep up the good work, guys, and stay safe!
