K-9 Sniffing in 016?

From two different comments, we have word of an outside unit being used to sniff locker rooms in the 016th District.

Please tell us this isn't another scandal?

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia's national news agency says robbers shot and wounded six people at the main international airport before fleeing with $1 million.

The agency says the robbers fired at security guards accompanying two currency exchange workers who were carrying a bag of cash at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

District police chief Zahedi Ayub says two other bystanders were also wounded in the robbery late Wednesday. Flights were not disrupted.

Stephen Peterson, who was in his Oak Brook police uniform and driving a squad car when he was caught by news cameras after appearing before a Will County grand jury investigating the disappearance of his father's wife, was given an 8-day suspension Wednesday night for, according to his chief, casting the department in a bad light.
Peterson, 28, son of former Bolingbrook police Sgt. Drew Peterson, used "extremely poor judgment in using a squad car in a matter that had nothing to do with the Oak Brook Police Department or the village of Oak Brook," Chief Thomas Sheahan told the Oak Brook Police and Fire Commission.
The three-member panel handed down the suspension after meeting in executive session. Sheahan's attorney, Charles Hervas, had asked for a suspension of 6 to 15 days. The commission left the decision as to when the suspension would begin up to the chief.
Peterson left the Oak Brook Village Hall following the commission's ruling without comment.
Sheahan said Peterson previously had been given 1-day suspensions on two occasions—for making a rude comment to a citizen and for sending an inappropriate message on a police computer.
Peterson had told the panel that he appeared before the grand jury four times, twice in uniform. He said he thought he had permission on Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 because he notified his superiors and he wore his uniform because he expected to return before his shift was over.
But Sgt. Casey Calvello, his superior Dec. 13, said he and Peterson did not discuss where the court appearance was or why he was going. Calvello later saw Peterson on TV.
"After I found out there was a problem," Calvello said, he asked Peterson if he had gotten permission. " 'Did I say you could take the squad car? If I did, I'd go to the chief and take the hit.' He said, 'No.' "
Drew Peterson, 54, is a suspect in the Oct. 28 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy. The grand jury also is investigating the 2004 drowning of Kathleen Savio, his third wife, who was found dead in a dry bathtub.
Drew Peterson denies wrongdoing in either case. He has not been named a suspect in Savio's death, and has not been charged in either case.

Hmmmm His son had nothing to do with any of the dead and missing wives.

He was given a supoena to go to the grand jury while working.

He went as directed by the subpoena and now they are punishing him because they can't get is father.

I really pray this last wife shows up with a jocker and all these people look like assholes.

Had it been me, I would of went to with the squad and uniform, it is a court notification.

I would just like to say thank you to all the FTO's out there. You are so seriously underappreciated. I have been forced to be an FTO lately b/c our district has so many rec and ppo's and i just don't know how the fto's do this everyday. They must have so much patience i can't even imagine. I know we all had to start somewhere, but man is it hard to sit there and see the guy/gal stumble through the easiest things, like writing a parker or just knowing directions and where streets are. Sitting there and trying not to say anything is incredibly frustrating and trying on me. You just want to say "hey, you should know this stuff, and if it takes you 5 minutes to write a damn parker you're going to have problems." And then everywhere you go they follow you around like a lap dog and won't leave your side. All the while you just want a little distance and breather so you can recharge your patience to last the rest of the tour. I've grown so appreciative of our FTO's and think they are well deserving of the next level pay (D2 i believe) and probablly much more.
To those PO's that have steady partners and get along good, you have NO IDEA how lucky you are. Cherish that and ride it out as long as you can!

UNREAL:
(Newspaper had a still picture from that 1990 video above this story)
Video still from the 1990 party at the Engine Company 100 firehouse, 6843 S. Harper. Engine 100 went out of service in March 2004. (Courtesy)
Exclusive: Notorious firehouse will honor blacks The scene of one of the most racially divisive chapters in Chicago Fire Department history will be converted into a museum honoring the contributions made by African-American firefighters, under a mayoral plan quietly introduced Wednesday -- a move one black alderman called "poetic justice." Engine 100 was the site of a raucous 1990 retirement party captured on a now-infamous videotape.

____________________________

When you make a museum for black firefighters what does that say about the department being "one".

I bet if anybody tried to make a museum for just white firemen, what the outcry would be.

Can't they just have a Chicago Firefighter Museum?

I guess I will start the White Chicago Police Museum and ask for Federal, County and City grant money. I am sure the checks will be in the mail.

They are looking for people who may have seen the accident.

The victim was not identified, the station reported.

Airport Officials have stated that Lt. Jimmy Carroll was observed walking down Runway 51W in his fluffy slippers, bathrobe and his empty dog leash while talking into his police scanner. They lured him off the runway by having him follow a cardboard cut out of Donnie! Word is that he is now resting comfortably at a padded rubber room at Tinley Park Hospital. Jimmy was heard muttering, Overtime Slips???? I never signed no overtime slips????
But he cooled down once they gave him a Junior Police Man's plastic gold star with no sharp edges! POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR Jimmy!!

The K-9 dogs were brought into the 16th District under the orders of the watch commander. The K-9's were accused of humping a citizen's leg and had a strong odor of an alcholic beverage on their breath. The W/C ordered the K-9's to blow under the new G.O. on sworn personnel not being intoxicated. The K-9's refuse to blow but did hump the W/C's leg.

They have been striped of their fur and now are at Call Back.

The DEA was in 016 with a dog and either a CPD ET or Canine handler. We were told it was a training exercise on the second floor. We were never told that we could not go upstairs. Don't know if they fornd anything, DEA agent and CPD guy came down and went into W/C office and then made a copy of something. DEA guy talked for a bit and left. I just find it strange that the DEA was conducting a "training" exercise in a CPD station at 2200 hours. I'm sure they can find a muuch better place to do training.

There is no expectation of privacy in a department locker, they tell you that when you're in the academy. If you were absent that day, you should have been able to figure it out without being told. The department owns the locker and can go into it anytime they want.

If you put something in your locker that can't stand the light of day, then you deserve whatever happens.

People like that don't have sense enough to come in from out of the rain....a waste of DNA.

Oh, and don't yo have a 5 day work week? That sounds GREAT to me, and if it was a legitimate process I'd be the first in line to try out (note I said LEGIT).... but SGT"S pay? For a kickass spot? Hey, maybe the CAPS office should have a 4 day week and make captains pay! If you guys get sgts pay, it means little more than this dept is STILL run by clout and, as a result, is still screwed up.

If I am right, the SWAT team was told from day one they would all have take home cars. As the saying goes, when elephants fly. Talk to any of the SWAT guys and see if they stand together. Look for an outsider to soon be in charge of SWAT. More than likely a retired HRT guy from the FBI.

HEY ASSHAT! The ONLY people you will hurt by this action are the FAMILIES OF DEAD POLICE OFFICERS. This is the ONE day a year that the bosses' bosses have to get their asses out of bed and do something for.... US. I'm all for a boycott that directly affects policework---, for everyone forgetting their guns on a sat nite (hour uniform adj.), for everyone downing their cars at once, for the whole district locking up drinkers at the same time leaving NO coppers on the street, for the radio room to have accidentally unplugged the chargers (no batteries)...but to boycott St. Judes hurts the wrong people..... US. Perhaps a rally AFTER St. Judes would be more appropriate, Downtown in front of NBC or ABC building?

thanks for the kind words and you are right. Being an FTO is definitely something that is underappreciated. it is a tremendous responsibility that little want to take on but so many are quick to comment on.

I have been lucky because over the years I have had the privilege of training alot of officers who have gone on to be bosses or detectives.

I take what I do very seriously and feel that with good caring FTOS the dept would be in a world of trouble.

We work with some of the best coppers in the world but unfortunately that is overshadowed by the major incidents that are usually blown out of proportion.

for me i have been blessed to have worked with a bunch of great people over the years and will continue to do the best I can for the remainder.

as ftos we earn every bit of the d2 pay we get and are deserving of d2a pay based on what we do on a daily basis.

again thanks for the kind words and as always stay safe and remember there is always a camera watching you so be careful and be smart.

Did you notice the video the news media outlets are using does not show the Blacks that were attending the party or tell how the video came into possession of blacks courtesy of a locker burglary.

To the above poster that says we should skip the St Jude parade...YOU SHOULD RESIGN...This isn't about YOU or US...it's about the officers that have been killed doing what they loved to do and I am sure they would love to be here to march in the parade ...but they are not. There is No reason not to be at St Jude whatsoever...unless it is a medical emergency...or family crisis..otherwise EVERYONE should be at St Jude.Hell it's the only time that we CAN show our strength and come together for a purpose...we are all we have and for the families of the fallen officers we are all they have...why do you think they come down to watch us?? Even though this department is going through some very challenging times right now we need to be proud of who we are and what we do...there is no better place to feel that pride than in the St Jude Parade..if you don't feel a sense of pride there..then you need to resign. As far as your last comment on "What an impression that would leave" On Who?? The families of the officers that were killed in the line of duty?? This parade is for them ...NOT the politicians or the Superintendent...

He was given a supoena to go to the grand jury while working.

4/09/2008 10:08:00 AM

That's bullshit!!!
We can do; in a split second, what takes them 3, 4 or 5 hours (or more) to get ready to do.

We are the front line. Not SWAT!!!
We are the first responders. Not SWAT.
SWAT is the what the fire dept. is to this city.
They chose to be in that part of the dept. just like tact and gang team members did. If SWAT gets the bump in pay, so should TACT AND GANG teams.
SWAT doesn't do anything but sit around and complain about going to training (shooting and gym time)and no overtime. If they want overtime, make arrests and go to court.
If we had "long guns" we could shoot the bad guy from far away, too. What part of "exempt" does it mean for SWAT to get special consideration. They don't have a dog like K-9 has to take home and care for. They don't supervise any blue shirts. They don't have to respond to the any citizen complaining about the police service. Fuck those primadonas. Doesn't every district have an Incident car anyway? They're more reasons not to give them a pay increase.

HERE IS AN IDEA FOR ST. JUDE'S...To show our current disgust with the current Sup and still pay homage to our fallen brothers and sisters how about a candelight vigil, much like the Nat'l Memorial, on Saturday, 03 May @ 2000 HRS @ the Gold Star Memorial Park. This will trump the Sunday parade and show our unity and respect. We could follow the following rules/agenda.

1. Officers appear in dress uniform
2. Please bring a candle
3. Presentation of colors
4. Nat'l Anthem
5. Procession of pipes and drums
6. Benidiction
7. Reading of the names
8. Closing pray

Just an idea. At some point, we as group need to show that we are a power to be reckoned with.

Former Supt. Cline did take the 5th admendment in front of the Federal Grand Jury but it wasn't during or have anything to do with the Marquette 10 scandal.

Cline took the 5th in the early 1980's when he headed up OCD and the FEDS executed a search warrant on all the OCD search warrant files.

The only thing that saved them all was that the Fed informant who was the John Doe on all those search warrants turned up dead in a garbage can. With the informant dead (unsolved homicide) the Feds had no choice to drop the Federal Investigation.

Today, Area 4 concluded their “Biggest Loser 2008” contest. To the dismay of other detectives on the floor these fat asses lost a lot of weight-Good Job to everyone. However, the incentive to win was pretty good considering the buy in was $100 and almost 30 detectives tossed their cash into the hat in hopes to walk away with the winnings. It’s my understanding collectively the group lost over 700 lbs.

SCC- Good idea for a new topic

Ever notice how the dirt gets raked up during contract "negotiations"....prime example...the "infamous Engine 100 tape" hits the airwaves ....again

RE: 3:04AM - Black Firefighter Museum

Most guys "on the job" have never heard of any "Black Firefighter Museum" and know only of one Fire Museum in the area.

The Fire Museum of Greater Chicago (NOT THE AA Firefighter Museum - Don't get them confused) has been housed in some unused classroom space at St Gabriels school (Private entity) for at least 8 years. (The priest at the school has always been a fan of the fire service....that's how it got to be there)

I personally know members of this board and they have fought to get the city to donate location to honor the history of its own department. It has taken YEARS.

The FMGC has sought the talents of tradesmen (voluntarily) to make the necessary repairs to the facility given to them by the city.

Now, I'd like to see what work was done to Engine 100's house between its closing and this recent decision.

SCC:
Why do you keep posting all the nonsense comments on Carroll from the airport, it's pretty clear that it is the same two or three people. Nobody cares. Earlier this week there was a whole section in SCC about Sneed talking about a scandal at the airports, I think over 80 comments were posted, maybe 10 or 12 concerned Carroll and they weren't based on facts, just about his weight and stealing keys to cars?????

Carroll was probably a son of a bitch to many people, but whoever has the hard-on for him -- get over it, you apparently outlasted him, let it go.

It's pretty clear to the rest of us, that whoever the 2 or 3 people are who are still bashing Carroll were dumped from a tact team, or good spot and are now working a beat car. I worked in 009 and 008 for Carroll, and he never bothered the people on the watch, oh yeah, he blew up at roll call about coming in early - but that was after he told the sergeant to make sure no one comes in until 15 minutes after the hour that evening, why, because, Charlie Williams, Dugan and Kirby were all in 008 that night riding around. What happens, the sergeant lets everyone come in early and fronts Carroll off.
What Carroll should have done was chew out the sergeant. Not the watch. Piss poor judgement on Carroll's part.

Now, go write negative comments about me, how I'm blowing Carroll, but there are those of us who know
the certain ex tact guys and sergeants who were dumped by Carroll that are writing these posts.

So, start blasting me, and I start posting names. Okay Drappy....Okay E.Z.

No loyalty to Carroll,
but tired of this bullshit.

If you are advocating boycotting the march then you either don’t know what it stands for or you are one of the many that put on the uniform and paid the ultimate price. Too many only preach of brotherhood when they are parking illegally or trying to get some perk. The only statement that should be made is that we will never forget those that gave their lives in service to this shithole city that doesn’t give a damn.
As far as the mayor is concerned, he would love it if nobody showed (he would notice a lack of activity before he would care about the march). Since there is no revenue for the city from this, there would be no answers demanded by anyone but the families that showed up and felt betrayed and forgotten. Now that it is at the memorial and not down town, police and their families are the only ones attending. They need to know that WE CARE. I would hate to think of my mother attending on my behalf thinking that my sacrifice at least meant something to my fellow officers only to see a small showing and getting the feeling that nobody cares.
Show some respect for the sacrifice that they made and take one little morning out of your year for their families and to show some solidarity. If you try to make it something else, it takes away from what we should be there for.

I happen to agree with this decision. I don't think he should of went to the grand jury in uniform, in company squad or on oak brook taxes payers dime. he was there on a private family matter, he should of took time that day and attended court. the grand jury appearance had nothing to do with the oak brook police dept. nor was he there representing them. that would be like you going to traffic court in dupage county in uniform and in cpd car on duty for a traffic ticket you got off duty.

This is coming soon to a police department near you:

NYPD to start testing cops for steroids

April 10, 2008
BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- The New York Police Department will soon begin randomly testing its 36,000 officers for steroid abuse in light of allegations that a criminal ring was supplying the drug to pumped-up officers.

Police officials insisted Wednesday that the decision to test for anabolic steroids doesn't reflect a concern about widespread abuse at the nation's largest police department.

Instead, they said they wanted to drive home the point that using steroids without a prescription is illegal.

Since the NYPD already tests for narcotics, it ''only makes sense to include steroids,'' Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement.
---

You can bet your next uniform check on that being the order of the day here for the next contract. They will test for steroids and more as a matter of course during random drug testing. Any 'roid boys out there, start detoxifying now for the end is near.

They can test you for steroids now but have to articulate the reason. Then they order you down to the Medical Section just like regular random drug.

What we could do is march and after we had passed the Gold Star Families podium, break ranks as we reach the podium with J-Fed and the rest of the ass hats.

That way we show our respect to the people we care about and show our displeasure with our current bosses.

And here is my response to the officer who states, I'll have to stand inspection if we do that, or some other idiotic statement. Small price to pay for a show of unity among the ranks.

OFF TOPIC but here is a news flash from Daley's Chief Apologist....

"Daley wants to change city's motto

April 10, 2008 SUN-TIMES

BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter

Chicago's city seal says, “Urbs in Horto.” It means “City in a Garden.”

It might not say that for long if Mayor Daley has his way. How do the Latin words, “Urbs of Liberi” sound?

After launching a study of youth violence by the University of Chicago, Daley said today he would like to change the city's motto.

“I'm passionate about children. We put too many other things above our children. Children, to me, should be what we stand for here in the city of Chicago,” the mayor said.

“We’re the city of flowers. We’re the city of trees and gardens and all that. I’d like to maybe change that motto to, ‘City of Children.’ I really believe that.”

The mayor said it with a straight face. He wasn't kidding. But, it’s not clear whether he planned to pursue the costly idea of changing the city seal -- or whether he was saying it to underscore the fact that educating children and keeping them safe are his No. 1 priority."

Think about all the money to be made changing all the city seals, on building on vehicles on those new badges we got. Think about the benefits that will have to be cut for another lamebrain scheme of hizonoer.

OK SCC, If hizhonor wants to change the motto, let's give him a few suggestions, like:

"City of Screw the Middleclass", this would sound classier in Latin. That can be done on-line. Put up a post on this subject and I am sure you will get some great responses, I'll be working on it.

-------------

Ok... this guy must be a retard from the word 'go'. First and most obviously, the uniform they wear is not the same one: it's green, goofy. SWAT its currently the only testable postion that does not get out of grade pay (with the bomb techs and I believe the bodyguard detail getting sgts pay already). Also, not only are they required to pistol and rifle qualify 4 times a year, but they also have to retake their power test 4 times a year. Add that to the extra training and the literally thousands of dollars spent on equipment and uniforms and you get your answer. That is why they deserve extra pay.
Not only that, but most of the guys do a lot of training including seminars on thier own dime, just so when the shit really hits the fan, they're knowledgable and prepared.
Whether they get the extra $$$ they deserve is another thing, and as far as saying, 'no extra $$$, no SWAT team'... I sincerely doubt anyone said that. Its quite possible that they detailed an extensive proposal outlining the reasoning for a possible 'out of grade pay' on the next contract, and documenting it with personal reciepts as well as statistics from other departments.
Believe it or not, they've also got cellphones so they can be called in while their off duty for jobs as well as high risk warrants.

I hope you're never in a situation where you really need those guys, and thats simply because it'll be a situation that I wouldnt wish any copper to be in.
Why not get irritated at the bomb techs... when is the last time a bomb was dismantled in chicago? I'm sure if you find a bonified one, you're going to be calling in some help and you'll be glad when it arrives. You've got the bodyguard detail, the FTO's, the mounted unit, the marine unit, ET's, and Canine all getting out of grade pay. But you want to bitch that someone is getting something you're not. These units are necessary unless you want to sniff your own money, take care of your own horse, jump into the water after that floater, process your own crime scene, walk a recruit through the job, or stand around all day on a bodyguard detail... You can do your job and bitch about people making more money OR, go study for, or in this case, train for a test and give it a shot yourself.
If you want the extra pay, take the next test when they give it. Maybe you can make the team if you want it, but from the tone of your comment, I sincerely doubt you have niether the desire, nor the stones.

sgts. list tomorrow - list of 75 - that's 1 per watch, too short. Cmdrs. want more. Districts 4, 5, and 6 need upto 4 on a watch. Last week, there was a strong push for 104; however, J-Fed doesn't believe the academcy can effectively handle that many.

SWAT TALK:
Ive met a few of the guys and most of them are in it because of the love of the job and the desire to be that well trained elite team that gets called when the coppers need help. Realize the day and age we are living in and also realize this: It is not an IF any longer, it is a WHEN. Are you training off duty in case something happens or are you going to be the one that tosses his badge into the street when the shit hits the fan and says 'fuck this shit, Im outta here'. Seriously ask yourself that question. If we had a 911, or an aftermath of Katrina and the entire city went apeshit, what would you do? And if you'd stick around while being shot at, have you trained enough to have the tools (mental, physical, and equipment-wise) to actually be able to lend a hand?
Experts say that we're going to lose 1/3rd of our dept. when and where next big terrorist attack happens. That is to both casualties and officers just quitting on the spot.
From those Ive met on the SWAT team, theyre the ones preparing for just that.
OH, and these guys are also out there riding on priority jobs because deep down, theyre still in police work for the action too.

And don't give me that "elite" garbage, you wear the same uniform I do. Except I am answering jobs, not "training."

-----------

I just made the SWAT team off that last test and I'll let you in on a couple things.
1) I worked my ass off and I was treated fairly by everyone involved from square one.
2) Dep Shields addressed our graduating class and gave his congratulations on "being part of the city's most legitimate testing process, ever". It was shocking to all the bosses involved exactly how legit it was.
3) I've got absolutely zero clout, and a couple people in the class that actually did (there weren't many) didn't even make the list of people assigned to SWAT at this time.
4) The guys on the team that helped out as instructors as well as the others Ive met so far through the program are all extremely hard working, knowledgable, and well trained.
5) We were require to pass the SWAT pistol qual in full gear (helmet, glasses, gloves, level III vest including ceramic trauma plates) just to graduate the school and that didnt guarantee getting assigned there.
6) We were required to pass the SWAT rifle qual in full gear and shoot at least a 90% just to graduate.
7) We had to re-take the physical skills qual again before graduation as well.

If you want to be a part of this, TAKE THE NEXT TEST! Don't complain that someone is getting something you're not getting. You sound like a two year old!

I guess I will start the White Chicago Police Museum and ask for Federal, County and City grant money. I am sure the checks will be in the mail.

Being a white fireman isn't an equivalent achievement, A black firefighter had to overcome obstacles, prejudice and hate just to get an opportunity to be a firefighter. That is why there is a museaum. To honor and recognize what they did, what they faced and what they overcame.

If they want to make a point, have them go to St Jude’s, every officer out there. Civilian dress or uniform, but instead of marching with their units why not march with F.O.P. Five thousand officers behind Donahue & his gang would send a clear message and embarrass the Superintendent more than a no show.

A no-show is a cop-out! Have some guts and march in the St Jude’s parade!

Will the ass-pumpkin who keeps dupe-ing the boycott St. Judes please knock it off now. You made your assinine point the first time, and you obviously aren't smart enough to realize that the Mayor, City Hall, the Ivory Tower boys, coupled with the liberal press, would just spin the incident into a story to make us look even worse to the public. They would come out looking great, and we all would look like crap. The News Media would probably say that this proves we're not to be trusted, as we can't even come out for our fellow officers and fallen hero officers, or, numerous other things easy to think of. So, just be a man and come out and march for our fallen hero officers of the CPD, be proud, stay strong, and show the public that we're not nearly as bad as the liberal media portrays us to be, just because of a few bad apples that any business or large organization has. Uphold the Tradition, walk proud, each and every one of our fine officers of CPD.

RE: Sgt's pay for SWAT team

As much as you guys think you deserve it for all the BS, such as the on-call and facing armed suspects:

1:The BS is part and parcel of this job.

2: Facing armed suspects: Who doesn't on this job? Every day street coppers face subjects that are armed and are not protected by shields and covered by assault rifles.

3: You knew what you were getting into when you went out of your way to get that position.

4: The issue of sgt's pay for SWAT is a topic for contract talks. Don't hold your breath.

5: Refuse to deploy? Well, then I hope you are still on good terms with your former employers.

You could be looking at "Failure to perform assigned tasks", "Refusal of a lawful order" and "insubordination".

All of which are grounds for separation.

TO: Brand new SWAT guy:

1: Congrats. It was what you wanted, you worked for it, you got.

I think that even this dunderheaded city is starting to realize that there are certain places that you can not put people in because of who they know. SWAT is one of them. Maybe the only place. The liability picture is too great.

can you imagine what it would cost the city if some one in SWAT lit up a SH and it was found out that he was originally a washout that got put in because he was someone's somebody? The city wanted people that the city could document and court defend as to their abilities.

I do like the part about "most legitimate test ever." That is not really saying a lot. And it would be nice if that became a model for all department testing, but I doubt that will happen.

In regard to SWAT......

And why do you deserve Sgt pay? When last I checked, you are PO's.

And don't give me that "elite" garbage, you wear the same uniform I do. Except I am answering jobs, not "training."

Actually, we do not wear the same unifom any longer. Almost a year ago our uniform changed and we had to buy green B.D.U.'s. Of course that was after we had already bought black B.D.U's which was the uniform we would wear for search warrants and S.W.A.T. callouts. As for answering jobs, we have six training days per period and still work on the street 14 days of each period in a marked squad answering calls. No, we don't have to answer the typical bullshit calls you guys have to working beat cars in the districts---(THIS IS NOT A SLAM EITHER. I RESPECT ALL THE PEOPLE WORKING BEATS AND ANSWERING ALL THE B.S.CALLS AND I DO NOT THINK I AM ABOVE OR BETTER THAN ANY BLUE SHIRT PATROLMAN OUT THERE) but we do respond to S.V.I.P.'s, Hold up alarms, bank robberies, man w/ gun, shots fired, 10-1, ect... Also, we are the Critical Incident Response Team/haz-mat responders, several of us are E.M.T's, and we have to drive our personal cars all over the damn place. I could sit here and go on and on but really, I doubt what I say here will convince you. but I will say this.. we have to qualify with our pistols four times per year, and believe me the course is much more difficult than the city course. If you dont believe me go down to the Area 4 range or the academy and give it a try. We have to do a P.T test four times per year. The standards are the same for everyone meaning age and sex don't matter. 13 min 1 1/2, 40 push ups minimum in 1 min, and 40 sit ups minimum in one minute. Fail...and you're out. And we train just as much if not more than any other unit out there that receives a higher pay grade. In fact a while ago there was a bomb threat/robbery where it was unknown if the offender was still on scene. Guess who had to go in....S.W.A.T. The bomb squad (who makes D3) did not have to go in until we cleared the place for armed offenders. Really though there is only one real question that needs to be answered. Why would you not want to see your fellow officers..... that you claim to wear the same uniform as...make more money??? At least of all the units S.W.A.T. is the one that ANY officer in this department can try out for and have a LEGIT chance at making it.
For once "phone calls" are out. If you don't believe just ask any one of the approx. 300 officers that tried out in December. All scores were posted, and ANYONE could watch EVERY officer take the test. Is there ANY OTHER TEST in this department where that is done?
If you really are the "same" don't be spiteful...wish us luck and if we get it try out and come join us. We'd love to see 1000 officers try out because we really want and need the best we can get.

In reference to anonymous: regarding the St. Jude Tribute March. Today is April 10th, and 54years ago today, a very special person was born into this world. This very special persons' name is Chicago Police Officer Donald J. Marquez. My brother Don's End of Watch was March 19, 2002. To the few officers' who say let's boycott the St. Jude March, to make a statement to the new Supt.: please let me explain that this St. Jude March is not about the new Supt. It is not about the Mayor, nor any other politican. It is a very special day for us, the Chicago Police Departments' Gold Star Families. It is one day out of the whole year when about 8,000or more officers come together and show honor, respect, support, and love to our families. They march to let us know that our loved ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice, will never be forgotten. There are partners and co-workers who worked with our heroes, and they too still come out to show us their support. My phone just rang, it's about 11:30pm, I said, "who would be calling me this late?" It was my brother Don's close friend, Officer Fernando Alonzo. He called me to tell me he and his family have been thinking about my brother Don all throughout the day. I told him, you would not believe what I am doing, I told him I am on the police blog trying to explain what the St. Jude March is all about, what are the chances that he would call me at this exact moment. He shared how he and his family miss my brother. If my brother was alive today, he would be having a celebration with his buddy and pal Alonzo right now. So you see Officers, we need to see you in unity out there on Sun. morning May 4th. You make us feel so proud that we are still a part of the police family. We look forward to seeing the officers march in loving memory of our fallen heroes. Some Gold Star Families come from across the United States to be a part of this special march. Sgt. Mark Golosinski (16th) and a few other officers' who commented and said, "the only people you would be hurting are the families of our fallen officers". They are absolutely correct. Today my brother Don would have turned 54 years old. He served and protected this city for 20 years, he had just become a brand new grandfather for the first time. Just as he was so proud to be a brand new grandfather, he was also so proud to be a Chicago Police Officer. His life was taken from us, from a 77 year old who opened fire on my brother as he was serving a warrant. Officers, you never want your family to ever become a Gold Star Member. It is so true when someone said, "this is one organization you wouldn't want to belong to". This pain in our hearts is real, it never goes away, how could it, we loved them, we miss them and til the day we reunite in heaven with our loved ones, we will never, ever forget why they died, they died doing something they loved, and that was serving and protecting their city. I encourage you to look beyond all the changes that are happening, just for one day. We lost our heros in the line of duty. You see, when we lost our officer and our loved one, all of our lives changed. I tried not to cry today, but I miss him so much. I wish I could just call him one more time and hear his voice, and tell him Happy Birthday. If you knew my brother Don, you were so blessed, he was the greatest brother that ever lived. I would like to personally say thank you to each one of you for coming out and showing your respect and support. You are a very big part of our healing process. We appreciate you and we honor you the living. We are extremely proud to be part of the greatest police department in the world. Believe me, we never stop praying for you and every officer. Go home to your families tonight, tell them how much you love them while there is still time left.

Donna Marquez
President of The Gold Star Families

What we could do is march and after we had passed the Gold Star Families podium, break ranks as we reach the podium with J-Fed and the rest of the ass hats.

That way we show our respect to the people we care about and show our displeasure with our current bosses.

And here is my response to the officer who states, I'll have to stand inspection if we do that, or some other idiotic statement. Small price to pay for a show of unity among the ranks.

I remember when they settled that police/fire locker search issue. Fireman at 71st & Parnell(I think it's parnell) was selling dope out of the firehouse. Cpd narc hits the house after a controlled buy, enter the locker with CFD Capts permission, find dope, make arrest, fireman fired case closed. Case goes to appeal, judge says firemans lockers cannot be searched admin. because they SLEEP OVERNIGHT in the firehouse a warrant must be gotten for the locker as though it were his home. Fireman gets job back. Police do not enjoy the same rights because we don't live (sleep overnite) in the station. BTW fireman was fired inside of a yr. for carrying unregis. and pitching dope out his own house. Will he be in the museum for that landmark court decision or his having been the first african american firefighter in chgo to turn his station into a dope house?

sgts. list tomorrow - list of 75 - that's 1 per watch, too short. Cmdrs. want more. Districts 4, 5, and 6 need upto 4 on a watch. Last week, there was a strong push for 104; however, J-Fed doesn't believe the academcy can effectively handle that many.

4/10/2008 08:55:00 PM

As a sgt in academy, there are limits to this facility. Where will you put 100 sgts at academy? maybe put up a huge tent? Rent a hall? Academy has limited space and very limited parking. Academy now hiring recruits. Outside units always using academy for training. 75 is the limit. Facilities are limited. Training would be severely impacted with a class over 75.

Please don't mention the Mayor and the St Jude March in the same breath. The Mayor has NEVER to my knowledge attended a St Jude March. Supposedly he reserves Sunday for his family or outfit friends. That is the answer I got once when I wrote to the Mayor why he didn't attend St Jude which honors officers who have given their lives defending HIS city.

The bum good for shit Mayor cannot even come out to honor fallen police officers.

First off its UZI, second last time I checked most vests will stop a .22 cal round, and third at least they have time to prepare for a confrontation unlike a beat cop on a "routine" traffic stop. Go look at yourself in the mirror some more you fool!

4/10/2008 10:16:00 PM
---

Hey, yo, the man was referring to a .22 cal RIFLE bullet of the type used by the M16, M4 etc. That .22 is the .223, it is a military round and travels at high velocity. It is not to be confused with the .22 cal long rifle which is used for plinking or squirrel hunting.

The .223 will most certainly go through a vest though it is likely to penetrate only one side, shred the human underneath and expend it's energy inside the wearer of the vest. The .223 is less likely to come out the other side, could happen but not likely, the .223 round will tumble, as designed, once it gets inside a human.

A .30 cal round such as the 30-06 or .308 is much more likely to do a through and through of a vest. Also a 7.62x39 AK47 type round, those easily go through vests and most trauma plates too.

Now there's a thought! Go and do all your drinking in the suburbs. With no coppers purchasing alcohol in the city, the city doesn't get the tax monies. It would be just like the .05 cent tax on bottle water. Seems like everyone who drinks that is buying it the surrounding suburbs and Daley isn't getting the money he expected from the tax.

Hey swat too bad, so sad!! No one asked you or forced you to be swat.Just like no one made guys join tact and gang teams. So whhen the bosses want to change you hours, work details, work a different district, basically do whatever they want with you and if you go to the union to complain they will tell you there is nothing they can do for you except advise you to leave the unit if you do not like it. So if you want sgt.'s pay and they wont give it to you GO BACK TO PATROL!! If you feel you are not being compensated for the work you do, DONT DO IT!!! If you love being swat then do it for the love of it and if you just want that sgt.'s pay, take and pass the sgt.'s test and then you will get the pay you want.Sorry but you will not get any support for sgt. pay from me.
The only people that I believe who should not be making a patrolmans salary is armed secretaries.Coppers responding to calls for service should be making more money than armed secretaries answering phones and pushing paper.

_____________________________
Are you joking? That list was very weak my friend..if your post was an attempt to equal problems then you failed.
Drug abuse? Yeah a problem among every race...but where is it bought 99.9% of the time?
Child rape and murder? Committed by all races and punishment should be death!I don't have the stats of which race commits it more so i'm not gonna pretend to know neither should you.
Ethnic inbreeding??? Do you mean interracial breeding? Or incest? Again don't have the stats but disgusting either way.
Alcohol abuse? See drug abuse...a common problem although I do not see people standing on the corner drinking beer/wine/whiskey 24/7 in most districts except for 007/010/011/015 just to name a few.
"Rambo Style shootings?" Let's see...ok may have me there on quite a few..... but wait...D.C. Snipers??? Tinley Park shooting? Record number of shootings in 007/011/015 c'mon let's not even compare those.
My point is let's be realistic everyone has problems but you should agree...drug dealing/robbery/gangs/guns/murder is a big problem nationwide.
What may ask would you like to be done? Stop drug dealing/gangs? Yeah ok except that the liberal courts/media tie our hands because you wouldn't want to violate a drug dealers/gangbangers rights.Illegal Immigration? Would fight it all day except to do so labels you Racist and even they have rights even though they are ILLEGAl!!! Last I checked i'm not border patrol.
Let's just identify the problems that go on evry single day and where they are and at least be honest about that.

Off Topic but;

Several years ago Loop Traffic (152) had it's own S.W.O.T. Unit.

S pecial
W riters
O f
T ickets

Their goal was to make as much O.T. as possible. They could not get D2 or D2a pay, so recently 2 of them (Mickey and Ernie) decided to scam the system, use fake stats, and work DUI roadblocks that they could have never qualified for to work that program. Lord only knows how many others in that unit (bosses included) did the same thing and never checked who was working or should have be working, or if they were even there and just added their names to the A & A sheets later on.

Now they have been stripped of police power, are assigned over at callback with the other prisoners of war, will probably get fired, and may even have to spend some time in the slammer for defrauding the city and Federal Govt. Looks like some White Shirts will be swinging also for not paying attention to the paperwork.

All for some O.T.

p.s. As for the real S.W.A.T. teams, no extra dough. You knew what you applied for when you started. If this city was serious, they would be paying for all your equipment that you need for your specialized job.

No EXEMPT member would ever step forward and get rid of SWAT. It would be lke suddenly getting rid of the Marine unit. Now before you go getting bend out of shape with similarities, I mean removing a group that has a specific responsibility and would require tremendous time and money to get rolling with a hundred young bucks to replace.
SWAT was open citywide and nearly 400 officers tried out. Only 25 made it. Not by clout, not with a phone call.

To those who are not SWAT , take your jealousy and turn it into anger for your inability to try out. Complain about the mayor and the pension instead.

Hey SCC, for the sake of our fallen brothers and their families, don't let these idiots out there organize a boycott of St Jude’s.

Stay Thirsty My Friend!!!

4/10/2008 10:21:00 PM

That's the answer. Attendance to honor the fallen, accompanied by organized, peaceful dissent. But this is a good way, also:

What we could do is march and after we had passed the Gold Star Families podium, break ranks as we reach the podium with J-Fed and the rest of the ass hats.

That way we show our respect to the people we care about and show our displeasure with our current bosses.

And here is my response to the officer who states, I'll have to stand inspection if we do that, or some other idiotic statement. Small price to pay for a show of unity among the ranks.

4/10/2008 06:52:00 PM

SWAT is a good thing. However, D2A? D2 at best.

FTOs at D2A or D3 yes. They are responsible for another officer.

Instructors at the academy maybe D2.

Realize this: the hardest position on this job is working that beat car. The officers working those busy districts who respond to "SWAT calls" deserve additional pay not "come out and play SWAT officers".

In reality SWAT responds to as many jobs as a 20th district copper on midnights.

SWAT is not bid-able, therefore exempt like tact and gang.

4/11/2008 04:27:00 AM

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thank you for sharing. I was in S.O.S since 2000. I've never had anyone tell me I'm a stroke nor did I ever hear of someone saying that to another officer's face. So I guess if you really felt that way you simply were not man enough to say it. In case you have found an ounce of testosterone in your spineless body, we are still at Homan Square if you'd like to really let any one of us know how you feel. Next, S.W.A.T. is not an exempt position. The last test was available to any officer citywide. Maybe if you got your head out of your ass and read a bulletin or looked at a department notice or actually had a friend that talked to you, you might know this. Next you might want to find out what the meaning of exempt and volunteer is. The contract does cover S.W.A.T. and we do have set hours but again if you were in S.O.S. you would know that they can change our hours because 1. we are in a unit and 2. we receive duty availability. Finally just to prove what a JACKASS you truly are....wouldn't it be better to have S.W.A.T get more money. After all you could try out and make more too.... or maybe you just like to be miserable and bitch about those that put forth the effort to achieve more than you. like I said in an earlier post to another bitter person, We'd love to see a lot more people try out because we do want the highest qualified people on the team.

Yes they were crowded into one room for 8 weeks. 100 would be the limit. Strictly lecture classes, without any scenarios or hands on training. If that is what the department desires, then promote 100 sgts, jammed them into one large room for weeks of lecturescfrom exempts at 35th street. In the past, sgt classes had hands on training with scenarios and inbasket exercises. I guess quantity over quality. Whatever. Academy is ready.

To: Sgt at the Academy:

there is NO one else there...oughta be able to handle 300-400. of course, THAT might require some work from some folks not so used to it. then there is the idea to hire some of the lt's and sgt's that have JUST retired to teach them.

In reality SWAT responds to as many jobs as a 20th district copper on midnights.

I agree with the St. Jude Eve Candlelight vigil...but, if you are going to boycott anything, boycott the District breakfast, boycott Dugan's etc.

I wouldn't put it past J-Fed & Co. to "hear" about the "history of St. Jude parades" and go out looking for post parade celebrations.

Don't get me wrong, once upon a time I had a lot of fun in Ira's after the parade.

Straight home to the backyard this year!

If you are such a bad ass post your name. Only the chicken shit police call SWAT anyway the real police chase that mother fucker up into the house and take his gun.
SO GO GET YOUR SHINE BOX WHILE YOU ARE WORKING YOUR GLORIFIED BEAT CAR

Hey Fireman-I'm not denigrating you, the people sponsoring a black-only firefighter museum are. I've always had tremendous respect for the way firemen stick together and always seem to have each others backs both off and on duty. But here come the reverends and politicians polarizing the fire dept. All firemen are heros. I run out of burning buildings not into them, but to lay claim to strife and hardship for ANY OF US after what our ancestors went through is practically laughable. Just sounds like a another divisive Daley tactic to me. DIVIDE AND CONQUER!

Can't they just have a Chicago Firefighter Museum?

I guess I will start the White Chicago Police Museum and ask for Federal, County and City grant money. I am sure the checks will be in the mail.
---------------------------------
Being a white fireman isn't an equivalent achievement, A black firefighter had to overcome obstacles, prejudice and hate just to get an opportunity to be a firefighter. That is why there is a museaum. To honor and recognize what they did, what they faced and what they overcame

Oh yea? Just about nationality/race had to overcome barriers in the past. The Irish, the Italians and so on... where's their museum?

SWAT talk....
I worked in SOS. They DON'T deserve the increase. They bitch and moan about being called in off duty. More calls are placed to these guy who are off duty fora "call out" trying to get someone to respond. Some excuses are ... I'm out of town, I'm drunk, I didn't hear my cell, My wife didn't give me the message, I'm at a party.... and so on. FUCK those strokes. Swat is an exempt position. Which means you volunteered to be there. Which means that hours can change outside of what the contract stipulates. If SWAT was a bid-able position then the contract governs what swat times are. SWAT is not bid-able, therefore exempt like tact and gang.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In your spare time look up Exempt and volunteer jackass

For the rest of you....
Before I begin my rant let me say that I know the majority of the "men in blue" are good hard workers. I have never talked down about them and I know they are the ones who handle the nonsense B.S. calls day in and day out. And I have never heard another guy on S.W.A.T. trash talk any cop just because he is a beat officer.

I've got 11 years on and during my short time I've learned that citizens know more about my job than I do, the media knows more about my job than I do and now sadly other coppers obviously know more about my job (on S.W.A.T.) than I do. You are going to bad mouth us because why??.... We are asking for a grade pay increase in the next contract. I see, that makes us assholes. Never mind the fact that the Marine Unit, Mounted Unit, K-9, B&A, Mayors detail, F.T.O.'s, and E.T.'s make more (just to name a few) and we train just as much as any officer in any one of those units. And you also know that we are the Critical incident/Haz mat police team for the City, that some of us are licensed E.M.T.'s, and that Firefighters with those qualifications receive more pay than their fellow firemen. You see in America people that have specailized skills that their coworkers do not have often receive more money for having those skills. And the best part is we didn't just cry to the union and say we want more money. No, we called several of the top 50 departments based on size (number of sworn officers) and found that the "S.W.A.T" (the quotes are because they are not all called S.W.A.T.) teams of New York, L.A., Houston, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Phoenix, and Las Vegas (just to name a few) all make more money that their fellow patrolman. How many contracts have you been around for? I know in my time and many years more there have been ZERO contracts that have not gone to an arbitrator. We didn't ask someone else to do this for us, we did it on our own. And wen it this contract goes to arbitration that work will hopefully get us what we are asking for. But I guess your logic makes the most sense, "fuck those guys they don't deserve more than me.". It would be really stupid to have another unit that makes more money therefore offering more officers the chance to get a higher grade of pay. Oh, now I know why you don't want us to get it. Because if the city gives S.W.A.T. more there won't be enough to go around for raises for everyone else. Now we'll only get 4% instead of 4%. (thats not a typo) Shit, we may even get 4.0000001%. Why don't you quit pouting, go to the range and work on improving your shooting or hit the gym so that you can try out next time. After all this was the most legit opportunity ANYONE in this department has. Just ask any one of the 300 that took the last test....even the ones that did not make it. If this cannot convince you then you really are an asshat, or just trying to get a rise out of people on the blog which = asshat.

--------------

Its true... it was. People would know that if they tried out or they spoke to someone that did. Also, next time you see a SWAT Operator riding on one of your jobs, ask him what was involved with the testing, or how the training is, or what the cost ($$$ and time) of being in the unit is. I ride on violent IP jobs that come over citywide whenever we're not down on a homeland security check if theyre in my assigned sector and I hope Ive never offended a beat copper by doing so. If I have, no one has ever said anything. They coppers that have asked what is up with the unit have been pretty surprised to find out what it really takes to be a SWAT operator and this is not to sound condescending because every police officer has a level of it, but it really takes a lot of commitment and time and hard work.
We do it because we enjoy it, and we do it so we can be ready for anything, and we do it for every patrolman, sgt, lt, capt, and above that doesnt have the training or experience to handle every potential critical incident. We are out there training and bettering ourselves for the city, and yes, for every patrolman. I think the reason you're getting the reaction you're getting on this blog is because its hard not to be offended when youre working pretty damn hard training and staying in shape, and you're spending thousands on gear to make sure you're prepared for when that officer needs you, and when you try to get a little extra compensation, you get a bunch of comments about being primadonna's and crybabies being made by the very PO's that your trying to make sure your at the top of your game to help out! How about just a little support? Its like the citizen that looks down his nose on you in the restaurant because he thinks he's better than you or doesnt ever need your help, except this is coming from other PO's!
Seriously guys.
And why has noone that has posted these negative comments responded to the fact that Marine Unit, Mounted, Canine, ET's, Bomb Techs, Mayors Detail, FTO's, and more get out of grade pay?
Of course they do... they're a specialized unit... they have extra training and extra responsibilities that the beat PO doesnt. You're not going to train your family pet to sniff for dope and bring him into work. You're not going to ride a horse alongside a protest, you're not going to fish a body out of the lake or dive for the city's F-ing tools when some goof knocks a $1000 construction tool into the river. You're not going to process a crime scene. And believe me when I tell you this and you can try and say you would but you are NOT going to go into a barricaded subjects house or apartment when he's got an automatic rifle, you're NOT going to go into a bank if we wind up having a hostage situation like has happened in many other cities, you're NOT going to do an entry into a SVIP, you're NOT going to do a search warrant on a meth lab, and you shouldnt have to because you havent recieved the proper training nor the proper equipment. Maybe, just maybe, that guy that has and is looking forward to doing all of those things FOR YOU, should get a bit extra like the other specialized units.

Chicago SWAT officers just returned from Arkansas, having attended the World SWAT Competition for the first time. They competed against seasoned operators that train for this event all year, and are equiped with the best gear money can buy; compared to our expired garbage.
Our guys finished 9th. Thats nine out of all the qualifing teams in the world. Awesome for a first time rag-tag team that got together a month ago for this.
CONGRAT GUYS ! , looking forward to watching y'all on ESPN. Made this retired ex-SOG get all warm inside.
