Still a Bad Idea

  • One driver saw the pedestrian in the crosswalk but hadn't heard about the "new" law requiring him to stop. Another knew about the law but didn't see the pedestrian.

Motorists offered all kinds of explanations after being pulled over recently by Chicago police for driving past, around -- and a few times nearly through -- an undercover officer posing as a pedestrian trying to make her way across a busy street.

  • Two hours after Delgado started, 78 cars, trucks, vans and cabs had been pulled over for failing to yield. That number easily could have been doubled, but police stopped only motorists who kept driving after Delgado had made it four or five feet into the road.
That's 78 chances for her to get squashed like a bug. In two hours. It almost seems like a suicide mission. Wouldn't a few Public Service Announcements make some difference? Oh wait, there's no potential for revenue generation in a PSA. Sorry, back to bucking the odds in a stacked deck.

Whats the law? Whats the deal? Are we to let peds walk accross the street at any crosswalk or for the cross walk at an intersection when they have the WALK signal. Please let me know. I want to do right. I don't think you guy's and gal's should be putting yourself in danger like that just to bring a point home and give our mayor more money. You have it bad enough. I know you hardly hear it enough, but THANK YOU for everything you do out there. I sure couldn't do it.

Doesn't the pedestrian bear some responsibility?

Unless the driver is actually trying to run over the officer, the officer is not in danger. If you saw the operation you wouldn't be worried. It's no more dangerous than directing traffic downtown (probably even less so). And nothing gets the word out like some big fines. Do a PSA with the big fines and you may have a deterance.

Most drivers in the city don't have a D.L. and nowadays the test is so watered down anyone can pass. They took out parallel parking because it was too hard and not really used outside of cities. Look at those who make a left turn across a double yellow line, you can't do it. But hey, half the cops probably don't know that.

As a pedestrian, I have to say that drivers out there just don't care. Pedestrians in a crosswalk aren't people, they're obstacles to the driver's (perceived) timeliness. The only way to change people's behavior whether to watch for pedestrians or to actually stop for stop signs, or anything, is to ticket the bad drivers, multiple times if need be. A PSA won't do anything at all.

That being said, I think the idea that a car should stop if a pedestrian has one foot off the curb is also a bit ridiculous, and I hope the officers are taking care and being safe.

So let me see cause I'm not familiar with this "Law." Anyone can walk out into the street and they must be yielded to? Is that the new thing? So basically because its a MCC now, the next drunk who runs into traffic and gets squished like a bug gives his family the ability to sue hard working citizens who are automatically in the wrong because they failed to yield? Is "jay-walking" no longer on the books? How about emergency vehicles? Should we be yielding to whoever feels its their time to cross the street regardless of the millions of dollars worth of traffic control devices? Someone please please pretty please clarify.

Unless they've changed the law, the idiot who walks out into on-going traffic is the one to get the ticket. The law doesn't give pedestrians carte blance to make cars slam on the brakes. The law was to protect those already walking in the cross walk to continue safely across.

I was hit by a taxi will crossing an intersection with a clear "walk" signal and on a green light. He did a left-hand turn into the back of my right knee, then swore up and down that 1) I wasn't there when he entered the intersection; 2) he never saw me; 3) he didn't hit me; and 4) I must have walked into the side of his cab and struck it with my hand. Yup. That's how I ended up bleeding and on the ground.

If people don't follow traffic laws at intersections with signal lights, they surely aren't going to follow them anywhere else!

Pedestrian walkway is different from a pedestrian crosswalk. The walkway is the extra wide crosswalk with white stripes inside the borders. Vehicles HAVE TO yield the right of way to pedestrians.

Pesdestrian crosswalks are at every corner. Vehicles HAVE TO yield the right of way to pedestrians if the pedestrians have the OKAY TO CROSS electronic go ahead on the pole on the corner.

If the corner isn't equipped with the walk or don't walk electronic sign then the vehicles have the right away if no stop sign is present.

First of all if it's a crosswalk not a walkway and their is no electronic crossing sign and their is no stop sign then what person in their right mind would just walk out into moving traffic. The driver doesn't know what your intention is either. He or she doesn't know if you are just hanging out on the corner, standing their waiting for somebody or if you're waiting to cross. Common sense would dictate that you wait until the coast is clear before crossing.

Of course this only applies to any other community other than all the ghetto districts here in the city. There is no common sense in gangsta land, rules and regulations don't apply and the law is always ignored. Hope that clears it up.

Great idea!!! Let's take all the responsibility away from the pedestrians and lay all the blame on the driver. Why look before crossing the street when the city says it'll be the drivers fault regardless. After all, it is easier to stop a 5000 pound car going 20-30mph then to just stop walking right? NEW LAW: cross outside of a crosswalk or against a don't walk signal and you are free game for any driver that may want to run your stupid ass over and said driver shall be immune from any future liability(civil and criminal). Instead the driver shall be rewarded for ridding society of another idiot. Free license plate renewal for any motorist that bags an alderman or county councilman. Free property tax for the year for bagging the midget.

Just some info:
a) the money came from a private grant for this study, the city was paid to pay the officers who participated. (for those still using crayons- NO wasted tax or fed money that could be used for tara).
b) the area was a pedestrian walkway (the big white lines which also had yeild to pedestrian signs) not a corner with lights.
c) this was no more dangerous than directing traffic at a sporting event with thousands of drunks driving home. (something the BS FlOP is fighting to get back because so many POs cried when we lost those details).
d) there is a huge difference between jaywalking and crossing at a designated spot for crossing, state law has given pedestrians the right of way at these crossings for some time.

Don't bitch at people on feet or bike for wanting to feel safe crossing the street. Some of the walkways are across six lanes of traffic; say eastbound traffic is clear so I begin my crossing, westbound traffic is now solid and I am now stuck in the middle of traffic as cars pass me in both directions. The law just makes it possible for someone to finish crossing by making both directions stop till the person/people are out of traffic.

My theory is this is all tied to the olympics. Its gonna take the people in this city 8+ years to finally catch on to pedestrian rights. Start teaching now and save the embarasment to the city of multiple people from other countries getting run down in 2016.

(a) When traffic control signals are not in place or not in operation the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.
(b) No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a moving vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.
