Al Joins the Stupidity

Of course, "reverend" Al Sharpton had a ten-ride-pass on the Stupid Express:
  • Reverend Al Sharpton has joined the push to keep Chicago Public School kids home on the first day of school. CBS 2 [...] reports on why the civil rights leader says the boycott is necessary.

The Rev. Al Sharpton talks about the funding divide between Chicago Public Schools and those in affluent areas.

"It leads to unequal access to education," he said to the congregation at New Landmark MB Church.
  • Those urging the boycott say for example, a Winnetka school receives about $17,000 for each student. A Chicago school gets about $10,000 for each child. Property taxes fund a large part of education – and taxes are higher in more affluent areas.
Maybe the extra $7,000 per kid comes from not having endless layers of bureaucracy, chronic waste and abysmal management that plagues the CPS. We have the highest local and county taxes in the nation, yet three decades of throwing money at the schools has yielded substandard test scores, a fifty percent drop out rate, generations of hamburger flippers and a murder/violence rate that rivals entire nations on the European and African continents.

Trust us - money isn't the problem. It's how they're spending it.

SCC,

"It's how they're spending it."

Excellent quote. You hit the nail right on the head.

I may not be a parent-yet, but I am certainly not stupid. I would never send my kids to Chicago Public Schools. There are several dozen private schools available and located all across the city.

ALSO:

Sharpton forgot something huge: its not all about the money, its about applying yourself and trying to build a successful future. The US Govt offers free public education through the high-school level. Why not take advantage of every minute of it to succeed?

I could go on for HOURS about this. How ignorant all these reverands are. Do they actually think skipping a day of school will help? Yeah right!

Keep insisting it is the government's fault, take no personal responsibility, and hope more "funding" becomes available.

If you spent $1,000,000 per child in this city, it still wouldn't matter! The complete lack of civility and social skills can not be overcome anywhere but from birth, AT HOME!

I hope that if Meeks carries out his threat of taking students to businesses that at least one the CEO's has the balls to tell them the problem is NOT in Springfield!

This "entitlement" bullshit makes me so sick. I hate this City!

Here is where your money is going:

New Landmark MB Church is located at 2700 W. Wilcox. For parents living near that location, the area attendance ele school is Calhoun North and HS is Crane. All the below stats are from the CPS website.

Calhoun North is 99.4% black. Crane is 98.1% black.

For Calhoun, '06-'07 Students Exceeding State Standards for the Highest Grade Enrolled was only 1%. Enrollment is 509. That means (5) Students Exceeded State Standards for the Highest Grade Enrolled. 5. That is it.

As for Crane, enrollment is 1,038. % of students that Meet/Exceed PSAE State Standards: 11% or 114. Students Exceeding State Standards: 0% or NONE. ZERO. NOT ONE. NOT ANY. Average ACT: 14.6, the IL avg is 20.1

These are the schools that are the closest to that church Sharpton spoke from. Why is that church not helping? Why do they have to run up to Winnetka, when the problem is literally in their back yard? With all of the tax exempt money that MB church is bringing in, why does it not have it's own school? Why should more of the citizens' tax money be spent there?

Not all of them are bad. I'm the product of Catholic schools and swore I'd never send my kids to CPS. But they're in an excellent school, with excellent teachers, and an excellent administration. If we didn't have access to that, they'd be in private school somewhere in the city (but probably not Catholic school, as the quality in the ones in my area has gone down considerably in their efforts to just stay afloat).

Al should open his own private schools here. Invest in your flock. With all the money donated to you and your causes(lawsuits) you should be able to afford to open a few schools and pay for your flock to attend. Oprah spent millions in Africa for a school.....send his flock there. It isn't the money, it is the lack of motivation of future honor students and lack of parental(parent) support of students. Many other schools do with alot less and produce many actual scholars. But I guess the good rev would rather play the race victim rather than putting his money where his mouth is.

All the Revs and all the $$$ will never change a thing! It begins at home and what you teach your children about values. If they value education, they will succeed. Anything in life worthwhile is worth working for. Nothing is free. Throwing $$$ in the suckhole will not solve the problem. The politicians throw $$$ at ideas like shooting arrows at a target. Unfortunately they never check to see if the arrows ever hit the target. You can't teach those who do not want to learn or do not value life or education. The politicans and revs have created a culture of entitlement. This entitlement culture is like baby birds who never grow up always waiting for someone to bring them a worm. Then again as long as the politicans and revs can keep people down, they stand to prosper.

Those schools have a limited number of students in attendence that live in those communities. Any out of area students must pay an outrageous amount to attend. Community taxes are thus able to fund education because census data is known. In Chicago, they accept anyone who wishes to enroll in the public school system whether they are legal residents or illegal immigrants. This put's a strain on the current funding system. Then you must include all of the additional BS spending, political contracts and stealing. Then they use what is left over and divide it between the students.

Just my opion!

The $10,700 number that is tossed around is an overrall average for every CPS student.

On average, high schools get $5000 more per student than grammar schools. So, high school kids always get some amount more than 10,700 per student.

Also, schools in "poor areas" get hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions more in federal discretionary funding. This is money that comes directly from the federal government for schools that have more than 40% of the students at or below poverty (that means the student receives some kind of federal assistance, lunch program, welfare, SSI, etc...). The school gets even more federal money as their percentage of "poor" students rises.

Many high schools have over 98% of their students classified as poor. That means big money. In fact, in the entire CPS more than 85% of all the students are classified as poor.

What happens is high schools and grammar schools on the north and far southwest sides get very, very little federal money because they have less than 40% of their students are "poor". These schools get MUCH LESS THAN the average 10,700 per student. These schools are also the highest performing schools.

Schools like Crane and Fenger get MUCH, MUCH MORE than the average 10,700 per student once you factor in the federal funds for the percentage of students at or below poverty.

Since new Trier definitely gets very little or no federal money, it is HIGHLY LIKELY that Crane HS and Fenger HS actually get MORE money per student than New Trier.

No Chicago reporter has picked up on this yet. The School Board doesn't want to disclose specifics because it would show the millions of dollars wasted on the lowest performing schools.

Every neighborhood grammar school on the NW Side that has been taken back by the families in the neighborhood (read no bussing) is in the upper rankings of the state. It can be done but everyone has to do their part. As far as high schools go, all of the magnet high schools from Jones on North are great schools and don't give me that business about St. Ignatius and Loyola. Those parents wish their kids were in Northside, Payton, Young and Jones.

Even if one doesn't have any children in public schools, it's not particularly hard to argue that an educated populace is beneficial for society at large.

That being said, will spending more money in schools like Crane make a difference? Certainly not.

I read a study not too long ago that found that the biggest determinant of whether a child does well in school isn't whether they go to a private or public school, it's how much the family values education. Families that value education are naturally more likely to be willing to pay for school.

I have a number of friends I know from high school (Lane Tech) who came from Asian families who grew up poor and went to district grammar schools, but they all graduated from college.

Poverty isn't the issue, parental involvement is, but parasite reverends aren't about to call out their lifeblood as the shitty parents they are.

Parents of school-age children in Chicago and its suburbs should go check the illioisloop.org web site. This site addresses school issues in great detail.

High achievement scores are really a reflection of the socio-economic background of the tested students' parents. If you have college-educated parents who are reasonably achieving adults, then you'll see reasonably achieving students. These parents are very involved with their children's education - and the administrators of their children's schools know this as well. There is accountability; because if Johnny's parents are concerned about Johnny's school problems, they're calling or visiting the school until the problem begins to be addressed. This attention to detail doesn't occur at many Chicago schools, and at many suburban schools were the parents are disinclined to actively observe and participate in their children's education.

Throwing money at the problem won't solve the achievement or drop-out problem. Did you know that HALF of the male students in the Chicago school system don't graduate from high school? Who's fault is that? But if you don't graduate from school, don't know how to behave in a business context, you won't get a job, or hold a job...and then you're hanging out.

I greatly appreciate this blog-site for accurate information regarding what's really occurring in Chicago. Between corrupt politicians and senior government officials, crazy high taxes, deteriorating infrastructure, continued job losses, and yes, the ever increasing crime rate, we Chicagoans have serious problems without leadership to even begin to address the situation
