Commissary?

Someone noted a contract proposal to replace uniform allowances with a commissary system similar to the Fire Department.

In the words of someone far old and wiser than we - "Never give anything back to the City. Ever." Any contract that comes through with anything like this needs to be voted down.

If this passes muster I believe that every sworn member on the CPD looks like shit and needs a full compliment of duty attire. My leather gets torn up, my holster is not up to snuff for Level 3 standards, my pants are worn, my shirts are looking yellow or bleached blue, my hats bill is squished, my rain coat has tears, my vest is over five years old, my cordura is torn, my Eisenhower is too small, my 3/4 length is all fuzzy, my leather looks brown, my clarinos are ripped, etcetra.

I think all of us could use a complete new issue, I just hope that the Quartermaster System is fully budgeted. I would hate to break the bank the first year. I usually try to budget accordingly with my uniform allowance but now I might as well take full advantage of this new great system. We are all going to look like recruits again.

SCC, get a paper route to supplement your income. It's pretty sad that you need to rely on a few sorry ass bucks to get by. Shake a cup and I'll toss a quarter in it for you.

The only reason police officers would vote down a commissary system over cash for a uniform allowance is that most never spend their uniform allowance on uniforms. Just look at the state of some officer's uniforms and gear for a confirmation.

There are officers out there right now, today, who are still carrying the old timer good for shit holster with a worn out strap or snap that leaves their revolvers hanging dangerously out to the side and available for the taking to any miscreant with a mind to commit murder.

Look around you at roll call and see if this isn't true.

Too many officers would rather risk their lives and their partner's lives than go out and spend some money on the latest security holster and belt. I have witnessed old wagon men go down into the bullpen in receiving at 26th street and wade right into a crowd of pissed off felons who are un-handcuffed with their weapons dangling dangerously out to one side.

I always thought that would be the scene of an officer losing his/her gun and the resulting mayhem.

I know of at least 4 officers who lost their lives directly due to old crappy holsters.

So, yes, I would be in favor of a commissary system if it would force officers to finally get rid of old, worn out and dangerous holsters and leather gear.

Yeah Right!! The Fire Department Commissary is run by a long time friend of Bernie Stone. Items are replaced on a need basis. In other words every time you tear a shirt fighting with the animal YOU have to take your ass ON YOUR TIME to the Commisary to get a new shirt. I know we must do it on our own time now but we have no idea where this so called Commisary will be located. Firefighters who live near O'Hare are forced to go to 24th and Halsted. Will it be the same for us. And who exactly will be given the contract for this new Commissary. You can bet your last dollar it will be someone related to Daley, Burke, Joyce, Degan, etc. etc. etc.

Not the biggest issue facing us but a matter of principle involved here. Clothing allowance increases over the years were given to offset any pension contribution issues for the City plain and simple. It was just another way for the Masters to give the Puppies another bone. FUCK EM. Don't give in to this issue.

Commisary will never happen. How will the Detectives use commisary???? They don't wear uniforms. How does Tact, Gangs, Narcotics, Etc, Etc, use commisary???

I'm sure the city has put this on the table. It won't happen. No need to panic. I'm a worrier by the way and this doesn't scare me.

The fop is giving away whtever to the city! But if they set it up like the fire department every stitch out of place I want a new shirt, pants, shoes etc.. The city would also have to buy us weapons also correct? hey mark don't give this up I know you guys make under the countre deals for jobs with the "family and friends" program but don't sell us out! thanks in advance! "have another drink on me"!!

Some of the CPD Officers really look like crap in the worn out and ill fitting uniforms some of them are wearing. Apparently they aren't spending the uniform allowance on uniforms. Take a little pride in yourself, but then again I blame their Supervisors as they aren't doing anything about it at roll call inspections.

Holy Commissass? Batman!!!

Fuck off!!! Just another way around the first issue program.

Although, I would trade this one to live outside of Chicago.

Anywhere in Illinois, Indiana or Wisconsin.

Anywhere away from City and County politics.

Take heed...remember back in the early '90's when health insurance was free? Then came the contract that FOP urged us to approve because the City only wanted to charge us $2 per pay day for single coverage? "$2 is nothing...."
NOW look at where we are.

PS...before anyone starts bitching about what we pay for healthcare, CTA members GET IT FOR FREE, with nothing coming out of their checks.

This, by the way, was one of Jody's contributions to the city's side of the contract proposals. As well as all the disciplinary revisions, including releasing our photos to the newspapers when we are ACCUSED, not found guilty, of transgressions.

Does the 'think tank' understand they will be the most hated people on this job and will have no place to hide when Jody folds up his tent and goes home?

As to leather gear, most of us don't take care of it at all. Leather must be oiled every so often to prevent it from drying and cracking. An occasional touch up with leather dye keeps it black. Most coppers on this dept. think it's a badge of honor to look like crap. It is not. You just look like crap. My gear is over a quarter century old and still looks good even after having been worn every working day in a blue and white over that time. I've bought new holsters a few times but the Sam Browne and cuff case are older than many of our younger officers. Maintenance is key, in your equipment and in yourself.

The city would never go commissary because they would have to provide for all those optional uniforms(new jackets, bdu, etc) to be available for all po's. I would make sure I get a new shit as soon as a string breaks free.

I think this is just the city trying to offset the increase in duty availability/fitness cash.

I don't see a problem with it. Officers for CPD are currently alloted $1800 a year for "uniform
allowance." Yet, if you attended most roll calls in the vast majority of the Districts, you wouldn't be able to tell. Too many people not spending it to update their raggedy shit. I've seen people ordered to replace shoes, pants, shirts that even a homeless man or woman wouldn't put on. We're our own worst enemies on this.

And just how long does everyone think those new crisp uniforms will look good for? The uniforms look bad because they are worn by working officers. Officers who put their lives on the line for some citizens who don't even deserve to live. If someone is there to save your sorry a**es do you really care what he looks like? Perhaps if that officer is in perfect uniform and the dept wants it to continue looking new, that officer may think twice before getting it dirty trying to save you sorry a** cheeto and grape pop fans.

Why don't you read intot hat comment just a little bit??? If this system comes into play it will cost the City of Chicago dearly when every sworn member needs a complete new set of uniforms annually. The city will quickly revert back tot he old uniform allowance after we all hit them up for that full set, including leather, etcetra.
