Deleted Comments
As stated earlier, we deleted a number of comments in the "Horrors" post. Most wished ill upon the officers and although most are speaking from the gut and even more feel that way, we just didn't think those should be out there at this time. It was a judgment call on our part and if we erred on the overly cautious side, we're sorry you feel that way. We'll take the heat.

We've never advocated unjustified killing, but we've pointed out the rank hypocrisy of "reverends" and their flocks turning a blind eye to the carnage of their communities, pillorying the police for bringing the killers to heel who terrorize their neighborhoods. We've lamented the fact that certain segments of society have supported the murderers of small children in the face of all evidence to the contrary just to make a buck. We've laughed at the stupidity of the gang bangers, gunning each other down in some bizarre ritual over territory or disrespect or anything else that demonstrates a complete unwillingness to act as if they had a shred of decency or moral fiber.
We'll continue to laugh when we can, scream if we have to and rage when we must.

Thank you SCC. Deleting some comments shows compassion.
As for the dark humor, I understand. Sometimes it's just a way to keep your sanity. As nurses, we have to do it too.

SCC, Good for you! There is a time for dark humor and there is never a time to darken the lives of children who unfortunatley died under horrible circumstances. Heck, even you and I disagree at times and call each other names, but that's what family does, yes, even police family, get mad, and make up.

Obviously you are not the police and you will never understand what really goes on. A majority of the murders in the city of Chicago are morons with rap sheets 2 miles long and they are involved in a gang or involved in dope sales. No one on this blog enjoys the murder of an innocent child or person, but when someone is slinging dope and they end up dead, this is part of the job description of a low level gang banging, dope dealer. You must get all of your information from the newspapers because have you ever seen when an “innocent” person “in the wrong place at the wrong time” gets killed, does the media have the balls or the reporting morals to publish that this person was arrested for 50 felonies? F*ck no they don’t. Don’t hold your breath on the apology d*ckhead. Go back to reading Mary Mitchell, Dawn Tripe Turner, and Suzie Snowflake (Oak Park paper).
Do you remember Mr. “Innocent” SpongeBob baggy pants that never carried a gun? Go check his webpage holding not one gun, but two and throwing up a gang sign in another picture.
Every reader of this blog comes here by choice. If the subject matter is unappealing you have the freedom to censor yourself and go elsewhere. You can read another blog, start one of your own if you like, or maybe just put your head back in the sand.
Funny how Jody knew the exact number of comments on a particular topic.
I would guess that there are many more officers who read the blog and never post, perhaps as many as 10 times more.
Given that simple, and probably conservative, assumption, that would mean that those 434 comments Jody referred to were read by at least 4,3430 people, mostly officers.
Insignificant? I don't think so, not when both major daily newspapers and the Superintendent and every boss read it regularly.
If it were insignificant Jody would never have heard of it. What truly is insignificant is the Department's own blog.
However, I do applaud his efforts on behalf of Mike Mette and his efforts, whatever they may be, at getting actual real pilot programs in place to try alternative work schedules. In over 25 years this is the closest the CPD has come to ridding us of that deadly 6/2 schedule.
That is the best thing to happen to the rank and file police officer since straight shifts.
Believe this or not, the FOP officers and the negotiating committee have worked long and hard on this one. Give them a lot of credit, they did very good on this one.
SCC you keep what your doing because its YOUR blog. You've said time after time that you will delete what you deem necessary to delete. Veteran readers of YOUR blog know this. And for all the cry babies out there who complain/bitch/whine, if you don't like it don't visit SCC'S blog.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE SWIPE RECORDS FOR THE FIRST DEPUTY AND ALL DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENTS!!! STANDING AROUND THE MANY WEEKLY HOMICIDE SCENES DOING NOTHING DOES NOT CONSTITUTE GOOD POLICE WORK.
Hell - I'd like to see the swipe records for all the part time SGTs at HQ and in units. Its always nice to have the boss quickly leave after getting in 2 hours late, tell you to call him/her on the cell if anything BIG happens, then don't answer the phone. Also nice to have to ambush one of them to get a report approved before the court date is come and gone. Don't try to tell them a Watch Commander from a district is on the Pax because the hold papers are at 30+ hours, the part time boss will refuse to take the call.
Hey - maybe THATs how they can help solve the city budget crunch. Create the part time SGT job, not for patrol, but those other less publicly viewed assignments. Retired types get hired back for 32 hours a week w/o benefits. Save a ton of dough and might really get our moneys worth. Can't be any worse than 20-25% of the line supervisors drawing a full paycheck w/benefits, maybe a city take home car that don't do anything of a police nature.
Might have stumbled onto a good concept here.

Their speech has not been abridged, they can rant (and do) in some cop-hating blog, or even the mainstream media. In light of recent events perhaps it's time to put things into perspective. First, we all know not everyone is cut out to be the police. Sure we all see a lot of shit but that is never an excuse for bad behavior. We have men and women, 18, 19, 20 years old serving in Iraq who will see far more death and devastation in one tour then most of us will see in a career. The death and carnage they are seeing, the torture victims, the beheading's and such..And let's not forget the second guessing, like the poor Marine who shot the guy after a fire fight who jerked when told to hold still, and it was all captured on camera..Or even those poor fools who took all the heat for what happened at Abu Ghraib..You think our bosses don't back us??? And thank God so few of us, RECENTLY, have had to bury a close friend due to an in the line of duty incident. Imagine those serving in the military who have seen more then one of there friends maimed or killed. And remember how you want to blame the job for thing we do the next time you encounter a homeless Vietnam Vet and he asks you for a dollar or to buy a Street Wise and you tell him to walk on..or someone asks you to donate to a veterans hospital..I'm not suggesting what we do is easy but to blame what we blame on it is just to much of a reach...If you need real help then by all means get it. But if you can't handle this job then quit...

I've done both, so I can speak to this. You see some stuff over there, but you see more as a cop. Trust me. Contact with the enemy there and contact with the enemy here is not proportional.
Don't sell yourself short. Policing a big city is more dangerous than serving in the military. We do it without the benefit of eyes in the sky and massive amounts of firepower to back us up. We hold the line on our own with pistols and a partner, not a platoon with crew served weapons.
