Outgunned Still
A few comments are telling the tale of a call of "man with a machine gun" in the 015 District. Responding units arrived, confronted and arrested an individual with an M-4 type rifle under his clothing.
First up, good job by the officers. Carrying a rifle under clothing means it probably wasn't readily accessible, but still - it's a rifle and will penetrate just about any body armor on the job right now. Second, does anyone think that this offender had to jump through any hoops to get his rifle? Run a mile-and-a-half? Sit ups? Anything?
No. We didn't think so. But he still had a rifle on the streets with a maximum effective range of over 500 meters - 5-and-a-half football fields. What if it wasn't under his clothing? What if he felt he had nothing to lose, nothing to live for, no hope for ever making a success of his life? And he had a shitload of ammunition? All the responding officers had were 9mm's and a few .45's with maybe 20 to 45 rounds each with an effective range of 50 meters. CPD's maximum qualifying distance is 25 yards and that's only a few shots, many of which end up missing.
These cops were out-ranged by an order of magnitude. It's a testament to officers' bravery and dedication that they continued to their call knowing that they could be in some serious shit. And we still have no shotguns on the street for Patrol. And next to no rifles. Not without jumping through artificial hoops that have nothing to do with the ability to handle, carry and shoot a long gun.

Here's the best part...more of these types of heavy weapons will soon be hitting the streets of Chicago, indirectly courtesy of law enforcement officials and law-abiding hunting/sporting enthusiasts. How, you ask? Simple. The Section 8 ghetto savages recently transplanted into areas in 016, etc., will be burglarizing coppers homes while we are at work and the like. Security systems, safes and dogs can be easily defeated by any half-assed career burglar. Even one that isn't smart enough to wear gloves when breaking into your home. Be safe, and be smart guys and gals. And prepare for the war that will surely impact the "homefront" come November regardless of the outcome.
Stop with the gun stuff.
How about the department issuing SAPI plates and carriers for level III or IV ballistic protection? Oh, I forgot...we don't have the money. How about speeding up the carbine training for those of us who passed the power test? Oh, I forgot...we don't have the manpower. How about...Ah, forget it! We ain't getting shit.

I'm not a J-Fed Fan but I don't get why it's his fault we are outgunned. He is the ONLY boss that ever even ATTEMPTED to get something like the rifle program rolling in this city. He has been in charge for less than 9 months...how far along would you expect a program like this to be in this SHIT department? Also, right now even if you can find the money in your budget for equipment you want all requests are being shot down by CITY HALL. Why? Because every penny that is not spent by the end of the year goes back into ol' shortshanks coffers to close his budget shortfalls. I'm all for saying WTF on many of his decisions but blame his predecessors on the fact that we don't have rifles, not J Fed.
Rodriguez, Hillard, Cline, and Starks*....Those are the ones that have been here in my time...why didn't they try to get us these weapons? Blaming J Fed is wrong.

EAM: Slightly O/T: Not only should every officer be armed with high powered rifles, the department needs to issue each officer a duty motorola radio, a set of three batteries and a charger.
Now the radio and batteries become the officers responsibility to maintain, and bring to work fully charged with a spare just in case. The State Police do it with their Star Comm radios with no problem. Each officer should then be issued a radio call sign, similar to those used by TRU, ONLY TO BE USED IN AN EMERGENCY OFF DUTY.
Here, if your off duty and your with your family and you witness a shooting or bank robbery in progress, you could remain undercover and just call in the specifics without being noticed (your on the paper OT attached.) Or if you don't feel like getting involved, drive on by and don't do shit, your option.
The radio would be used not only on duty but off duty as well (obviously with great care and responsibility.) Not a bad idea for those of us in 022 and 016 who see very little police service and must act on our own sometimes. When I see some shit jumping off in my neighborhood I'd like to deal with it and the city would have to pay the OT.
Remember, your the police 24/7, right, so no drinking or partying and all that bullshit they say. Make it work in your favor. Kick it around, what do you think? I'm not saying to go out and play fucking RAMBO either, I'm talking about the jag off that walks by and mother fucks the wife or kids threatening them or breaking your neighbors windows out in a domestic, now you can call it in on the radio and ask for help, guaranteed you'll get some. The one pit fall is the jagoff 2 year olds we have on the job, who would be jagbagging around with the radio off duty talking shit on there and cutting people out. Penalty should be severe if caught, no doubt.
And for Superintendent Weis, if your reading, this could actually help take a little bite out of crime rates. Protecting what's ours, because we have to do it, and because we want to do it.
Wake up everybody! The Soto case proves that the State's attorney's office doesn't give a shit about us. How in God's name does the SA drop charges?. At the very minimum the witnesses who recanted should be charged for giving false info to the police. The department is saying that they don't give a f*** if we get gunned down. They are not going to punish anyone who snitches on the police.

It is a Dereliction of Duty by the Superintendent of Police, Jody Weis, to send officers into harm's way without the tools to protect themselves properly.
Anything less than a Patrol Rifle in each squad car is completely unacceptable and inexcusable.

The biggest laugh I got from some of the guys who got the special training was when they said we shot at 25 yards. That's it. 25 yards with a rifle is NONSENSE.Don't we have any place we can shoot at 100, preferably 200 yards? Then they showed me the order about only keeping 18 rounds of ammo in the magazine. Who came up with this BS? In all my years in the service and as a competitive shooter I have never seen or even heard of a weapons malfunction due to loading the magazine to capacity.To top it all off, the only ammunition authorized is the obsolete 55 grain round. Everyone has dumped this round in favor of the 62 grain round. Who writes these weapons orders? What expertise does this person have? Where do they come up with this crap? This only reinforces my personal belief that no one in the training division has a clue about weapons whatsoever. I'm astonished that were not all still carrying revolvers the way this department "Works".
I can pick off a man armed with a bazooka with my handy dandy sling shot and a marble.
Its not what each other are armed with, its the skill of the hunter, the eye of the tiger, the ability to use every god given advantage tendered to you to crush the enemy.

I was one of the first two/three on scene. It was crazy, they only put the riffle under clothing because they never thought first on scene would actually confront them. This could have been really, really bad. Later I second guessed myself about not calling swat right away. How long would it have been til they were there?
Only put it under clothes because po's never 'jump out' on them on that block. They always roll very deep. First on scene did a great job, we should all pray no one got killed.

Anyone can see that the instalation of the AVL is a continuing knee-jerk reaction to the SOS scandal. Just like the sudden influx of in-car-cameras came on the heels of the Meeks incident. Please, is there anyone who reads this blog who has had a complaint exonerated because of the car camera?? The department boasted about how the cameras would "help" officers who are falsly accused when they were promoting the cameras just like now with the AVL. Any cases where this was true because the department hasn't mentioned any. Nor have I heard of any charges being brought against citizens who sign the affadavit and then are found to be outright lying and caught on camera. The powers that be have noticed that the suburbs don't have the frequent scandals that CPD has and has started to follow their policing model. Most suburbs have had GPS and in-car-cameras for years. Not to knock any suburb because the shit can hit the fan anywhere and I respect all of you. However, and I'm sorry for any suburban cops who read this, big city policing is different than suburban policing. The animal may be the same, but the methods of the hunt change. Also the burbs can be more selective in their hiring process which may weed out more potental problems early. The city is using the GPS and camera cars as a blanket solution saying they will "control" rouge officers when the focus should be on the hiring and screening process. Add that to an outsider leader and backstabbing bosses and you end up with the police department we have today. I have always worked in fast districts and love this job but Mr. Super, you do not deserve to wear OUR uniform. You do not deserve to choose OUR bosses. And you do not deserve to head OUR department. You have never been, nor will you ever be, a brother in blue. At least those UNDER you can say they once wore a blue shirt. Even if THEY have forgot.

The patrol rifle is a fucked up way to get you guys to look past more imporant issues,like raises. I have been doing this job for 15 yeras in the ghetto and have never felt "outgunned". I work in a citywide unit and we were in the 007th district last night. we heard over the radio that an 008th district car got into a pretty god wreck. both officers were banged up but ok. from what we heard the car they were in was a peice of sh*t pool car. I guess the main reason for the accident was nobodys fault except for the car. I guess it was a major mechanical malfunction that got these officers hurt. from what i gathered the two front wheels fell off while driving and sent the car into an uncontrolled spin hitting multiple cars skidding in the rain. by seeing the car i expected the officers to be more hurt then they were... j-fed.. how about some more reliable cars please..we like life and dont wanna get hurt because of some piece of crap pool

No They don't and many of them barely qualify if they do at all! Another reason for the gps in all the "important cars" like the mayor's and his detail cars and eddie burkes plus all the other "officials"!

Better weapons are needed. Not all of us are interested in carrying rifles, but those of you that do, God bless you. You should have that right.
I wouldn't mind carrying a twelve gauge two shot break open shotgun with an eighteen inch barrel and a pistol grip, making it twenty six inches overall.
It would be great in an emergency and just may give you that edge you need to make sure the bad guy doesn't do anything stupid. Also, it's practically idiot-proof.

You know the best part about us carrying M4 carbines? Not one has hit the street yet and some of the officers who jumped through hoops to get qualified...aren't. You see, a lot qualified about 90 days ago and according to the order you have to qualify every 90 days, so there are guys and gals out there whose carbine qulaification is expired or is about to.

I am a beat cop and I am no IDIOT. Obviously something crawled up your ass last night.
as a non-cop I don't have a major issue with cops being issued rifles or shotguns.
a lot of pds have them and there have not been a lot of stupid with them. cops do stupid a lot more with their handguns than they do with long guns.
some basic familiarization training and you should be good to go. we are not talking about expecting sniper type work here. just something that gives you guys a little standoff capability and some more oomph. just about anyone can learn to shoot an ar with practical accuracy out to 100 yards w/o a whole lot of trouble.
however, I can understand the reluctance. an extra 10 hours of training every year is going to be very expensive, and finding the time and instructors for it is not a trivial problem.

I don't know if you are serious or not, but I am tired of hearing that phrase.
One does not need to be "nutty" or have any other mental defect to want to possess a gun... especially in this city where the preferred weapons are guns. Are all the gang bangers gun nuts too?
People want to defend themselves by the very means they are threatened. If I do not have a gun, how can I defend myself or my family? Harsh words? Verbal Judo? Apologize for the hard life he has had to live? Talk some sense into him? You know... because 30 seconds of words is going to change a lifetime of deviant behavior, sociopathic tendencies and narcissism that is taught from birth. No.
Is the offender going to give me the same consideration I am expected to give him? Is he going to fire a warning shot, or shoot me in a non-lethal area? Is he going to order me to drop my weapon in a loud and clear voice? No.
Not that the anti-gun crowd would ever do this, but they should go ask a gun nut why they want guns. I bet the answer would frighten them. Wanting a gun is a very conscious, sane and calculated decision, with all the respect for human life possible.

It is amazing how the neighborhood I live in, populated by many police officers, security, city workers and other working families that all possess some sort of gun, yet are never used to settle disputes. Hmmm... could it be the guns or the people?
Who are you to judge me for wanting to protect my family, my friends and myself?
I am not a gun nut, I am a "don't want to be a victim" nut.
I definitely believe that there should be a bit more firepower accessable on the street than there currently is. Since there are traffic cars and park cars and school cars in the districts, would it be possible or realistic to have 1 car per district detailed or equipped as a "pre-swat" car. 1 car per district could possess stronger firepower and swat gear and would be a first responder in that district since who knows where swat is at in the city. It might not be much, but it would be a small step towards trying to even the odds on the street.
The radio would be used not only on duty but off duty as well (obviously with great care and responsibility.) Not a bad idea for those of us in 022 and 016 who see very little police service and must act on our own sometimes. When I see some shit jumping off in my neighborhood I'd like to deal with it and the city would have to pay the OT.
Try a cell phone, same capability. I do not want additional responsibility with department equipment at my house off duty. If man power is short who will respond. By the way, are you really aware the size of the 16th district? 32 square miles. The size of some suburbs. Deal with it.
They don't want you to kill one of them with a rifle. They don't give a fuck if you live or die. They are trying to backdoor the Power test in as many places as possible so they can eventually get rid of you as "medically unfit", reducing their payroll. Why can't so many figure this out? Share nothing with them about your physical condition. Wake up!
I found it interesting that an armed robbery took place on 10 Sep 08 @ 1320 hours on the Blue line station platform at Jackson [directly under the Federal building], with one round fired and it never hit the papers/news.
Interesting how the media provides NO coverage of a current news event, but will beat archive stories and forced opinion to death.
SCC whats wrong with having to pass the power test to be able to carry the rifle? Honestly, it's the lowest and most embarrassing standard there is!
I just finished the rifle course and I am glad that I have an opportunity to go into battle with some serious firepower. That being said, I hope That situation never arises in Chicago.
As a former Marine the course was just a refresher for me. The instructers did a great job showing coppers who never touched a rifle how to be shoot accurately and with confidence.
In regards to the comment about only shooting at 25yds...did anyone in the L.A. shootout shoot over a hundred yards? (no) In fact one offender was killed with a rifle from about 25 yds. In an urban enviorment that long shot is not going to present itself very often unless a sniper has to pick some one off.
I have hunted deer for many years with a rifle sighted @ 100 yds, and never have taken a shot from further than 50 yds, because alot of forest is always in the way.
I am not a fan of the current Superintendent, however in a record amount of time he has given us a good tool to use.
So get in shape, stop whining and take the course.

Great Job to all responding officers, I was there and the first responding officer a 99 female did a great job, she confronted the offenders and took charge. Her courge should remind us all that of what we are up against and thanks to 015 great job !!!

I work on 025 and heard the call over the air. We get dozens of such calls and thus when the female P.O. arrived on scene she asked for backup and they were able to apprehend the offender.

right on the money with the posting while intoxicated. We most cetainly need heavier weapons on the street in patrol. We ARE the first responders.. We most often always beat the CFD to fire and ambulance calls because they need to wake up, get dressed and start their vehicles. No shot at them, thats just the facts. We are already mobile in the car and ready to go. In spite of all the bull shit give no service talked about on the CSS site. NOT ONE OF US would not hesitate to respond when a life is in danger, through gunfire, fight or fire. Putting ourselves at risk to do so. What do we need and ask in return, proper equiptment, necessary training and supervisory support. Look what happened in Skokie two weeks ago and Weaton this week.

I think I've met you before. I was in Area 4 dropping off some info for the Detectives. My partner and I though it would be useful for the SWAT guys who were always downstairs so we went down to see you. We walked in the room where 5 or 6 of you were talking and you all looked at us... and turned your backs on us. We stood there for a couple of minutes being ignored before we decided that you can find it out on your own.
Are there PO's that would do some of the things you brought up? Probably. Do you think we should only have Sgt's and Lt's qualified? That's worked out great for Tasers hasn't it? I can't remember when I called for one and it arrived while it was still needed. Properly equip, properly train, and properly supervise.

The M/4 requirement to take the Fitness exam is only to encourage officers to stay in shape, look good and not to do any police work that offends peoples.
Do you need a fitness requirement to carry a Taser? Duty or Auxillary Weapon? Club? Mace? A shotgun?
No! You don't, but a M/4 you must!
Why? Cause you might have to run a few blocks and shoot the weapon per the Supt. Bullshit! Any ASSHOLE MUTHER FUCKER with this type of fire power ain't running away from the police. He's shooting and digging in. He's going to fight a battle because of the firing power and distance. YOUR DEAD! Maybe he gets it an hour or two later when HBT pulls up to the scene.
Any shooting incident taking place at a school will most likely occur during normal school hours. And since the 2nd watch usually has the most senior officers working one-man cars. We know that many of these senior officers are in their mid to late 50's and older, and we all know these ass kickers the second watch keep up with a steady regiment of Navy Seal exercises.
We also know that any JERK OFF shooting up a school (killing your kid) usually OFFS himself before, during or after the incident. Sometimes they wait for the police to do it.
Any terrorist wanting to maximize hard or soft targets with the intent to harm Americans will do it during day-light hours. Remember 911, Pearl Harbor and those attacks on public transportation in Great Britain, Spain and Japan?
How about a bank robbery, like the one in LA years ago...too bad most banks are only opened during business hours and not on midnights where the lion's share of carbines will be widely available on the streets.
Do YOU see the stupidity of these policy makers? Da Mayor wants fitness standards but he has to deal with organized labor. So what is his plan to succeed? Back door the fitness requirement by nickle and diming us through a new safety equipment policy?

Now the radio and batteries become the officers responsibility to maintain, and bring to work fully charged with a spare just in case. The State Police do it with their Star Comm radios with no problem. Each officer should then be issued a radio call sign, similar to those used by TRU, ONLY TO BE USED IN AN EMERGENCY OFF DUTY.

What about having all of us trained and qualified because we are recovering Carbine weapons? If officer safety was a concern of management they would ensure that we all are qualified with Carbines. But wait, I can call a supervisor since they are ordered to take the Familiarization Course. That will cover the lawsuit and the dept would not have to worry about qualifying all of us. Then again, the dept would not have the preverbal carrot so we take the Power test of our own accord. I will jump thru the hoops for my own sake, but will the officer next to me?
EVERY Officer should have an Assault Rifle? Are you Fuckin Nuts? It's scary enough some of these people are even allowed to carry a handgun.
OT Regarding the power test. If men and women get the same pay for the same job, then the power test should be the same for both. Why should a woman have to lift only 10 % of her weight and a man over 100%?. Maybe the women should get a pay cut. Same pay, same test. We don't give a different written test for men or women.
Actually, it's worse than you think. Alot of career criminals and shithead gang members are joining the military due to decreased recruitment standards.
Once in the miltary, they are trained in the art of war, including how to ambush law enforcement. They of course have no qualms about stealing military hardware for their fellow gang members.

At Area 2 Friday and Saturday non union out fit is installing GPS modules in the dick cars and 005th Dist marked and unmarked cars that didnt have them yet. Not allowed to use garage at motor maintenance. My question is why the watch commanders are allowing scab labor to use the bays behind the lock up. FlRST OF ALL its a police safety issue and we know flop is non existent in 005 and 620.
Were is the electricians union?
They made the scab labor installing LoJack units to install them outside in the middle of winter. Any one with a union relative should contact the electricians about how there working on city cars, inside a police facility violating a union pact. As much as we hate the political hacks employed by the city, they are union jobs and they are forced to live in Shitcago and pay into the city tax base, we should fuck these scabs over any way we can.
Its amazing working on a weekend when the union people are off, its even more amazing a watch commander allowing ten to fifteen unknown people excess to a police lock up.

EAM: Slightly O/T: Not only should every officer be armed with high powered rifles, the department needs to issue each officer a duty motorola radio, a set of three batteries and a charger.
Now the radio and batteries become the officers responsibility to maintain, and bring to work fully charged with a spare just in case. The State Police do it with their Star Comm radios with no problem. Each officer should then be issued a radio call sign, similar to those used by TRU, ONLY TO BE USED IN AN EMERGENCY OFF DUTY.

I'll bet the Superintendent doesn't have three batteries for his radio. Officers with take home radios, to my knowledge, get one radio and one battery and one charger. they exchange batteries when needed at a district.

My PDT in my squad car has Windows 98 for christ sake and the battery has long since worn out and was never replaced.
We work with junk, we are supervised by incompetents and we must make do with substandard training and equipment. It's been that way for many years.

I was given a tour of a new Suburban Police Department today. It was a great facility (as I expected it would be), and I noticed that several P/O's had either a rifle or a shotgun in thir possession. I got the tour right after their roll call so I observed them going to their vehicles. I can't imagine that they encounter the violent crime that we see on a daily basis but it is nice to know that at least they are prepared.
I'd be in favor of SWAT, all Area Detectives, District Tact. Teams, & Gang Teams, and Street Sgts. & Lt's. being armed with M-4's , that's enough.

It was one female officer, who probably shocked the shit out of these two guys by jumping out on them (oh, yes! I believe that M-4's should be in every district on every watch...but I see the roll out of these weapons to be very slow...less than 200 officers trained. I have a feeling that there are thousands of 12 gauge shotguns in the CPD inventory right now...why are we not equipping cars/officers with these as well? I would buy one tomorrow if allowed...a much more reliable "police" weapon. It would be nice to have both in the cars and districts.
I am not a copper but it is amazing to me that a police department will not allow its members to have at least as much firepower as the bad guys. I dont get it.

If we do get the long guns I suggest that each and every officer on the job today goes out and gets a plate carrier and the level IV plates. Have you seen some of these people shoot their pistols? Shit, even the ones that decided to go out and buy striker fired pistols (so they can carry a Glock like SWAT, yipee) had some god-awful targets during the transition courses. I dont really want a lot of coppers carrying long guns when a miss will go a lot farther and have plenty of velocity on it to go through my soft body armor and kill me.
Think about it: Man with an AK call, coppers respond from all directions, first PO on scene is facing southbound behind the offender when the offender turns to fire, copper lets off a few rounds at shitbird and misses. Guess who is driving northbound to respond to the same job? Yep.. other coppers. That .223 round will go right through the windshield and through the vest and through the officer wearing the vest.
I think a power test just shows that the officers that want to carry the long gun also have the self discipline and dedication to duty and training to keep themselves at the MINIMUM POWER TEST STANDARDS. If you cant stay at the minimum, physical fitness wise, why would you keep your shooting at the highest of standards?
But again, even with the power test, a long gun in a lot of hands is only going to put officers in jeapardy.
Just my opinion.
I was one of the first two/three on scene. It was crazy, they only put the riffle under clothing because they never thought first on scene would actually confront them. This could have been really, really bad. Later I second guessed myself about not calling swat right away. How long would it have been til they were there?

Depends on how far off the closest SORT car was. Did any show up? Theyre usually monitoring Citywide 1 as well as the zone in the district they are in at the time. If you call for them, they'll be reached on CTWD 1 via the dispatcher, if they know what theyre doing.

Why should a woman have to lift only 10 % of her weight and a man over 100%?. Maybe the women should get a pay cut. Same pay, same test. We don't give a different written test for men or women.

Beat cops are the back bone of the job, not swat. You do nothing 90% of the time. Maybe swat should work around the clock and do police work when they are not called out, that way when needed you will already be on the street.
Talking about effective range, just look at SWAT at the last incident in excess of 200 shots were fired (with M-4s) by SWAT with only 11 hits. And they're the Department's tactical elite.

If this is such a big deal, buy your own batteries and chargers. Its not ideal but it beats getting in a jam because of a dead battery. Maybe the FOP could start a program to ask for donations from businesses and citizens to get you guys batteries and chargers. Might shame the power minds into breaking free some cash.

We recovered a 9mm from a guy as well. In total 7 taken to the station.
As for that testing thing, I tested in Feb '06, fine, then they took like 8 months to send results of that, then another month for POWER, and some folks from that test are STILL waiting! Dude, you can get hired in federal law enforcement before you can get hired for the CPD. As most of the beat cops seem to know, CPD is a leeetle bit short on manpower right now. The city could speed up a lot of parts of the hiring process without compromising the integrity of the testing (geez, just ask LAPD or NYPD), but I think the reason for such a dragged out process is the city actually doesn't want to hire more cops. Chicago cops get paid really well compared to cops in most parts of the country (thank your strong FOP, even though I know that's a sore point right now), and I think it's absolutely killing Daley. Since he can't really negotiate your contract back DOWN, the safest thing to do is lie about manpower (10,000 sworn out there? Seriously??? Please.) and drag out the hiring process so they barely hire anyone at all. You may feel you don't get paid enough, but cops are expensive to the city of Chicago, and they would just as soon let your numbers dwindle. At least until the crime rate spikes way up, anyway. As for me, I went elsewhere and have no regrets. CPD seems like a great bunch of cops, but the administration really just couldn't seem to get its act together. Too bad--I'm sure I'm not the only one that just plain went elsewhere. . .

The Tulsa Police Department issues 12 gauge shotguns (all Remington 870s, I think). It also allows officers who qualify to carry their personally owned AR-15s in their cars.
There is no excuse for a police department not to issue the necessary equipment for officer safety. What has your FOP been doing?
I'm glad the officers that rolled on the "man with a gun" call were able to resolve the situation without getting hurt.

i know this will get buried in this post, but let the troops know: the in car camera has saved a southside p.o. from an excessive force beef. the kid was never touched, ran from the po-po and busted his OWN face when he fell. next day, he's in the station with the family, saying the po-lice did it. so, yes, the cameras are saving p.o.'s.
I work on 025 and heard the call over the air. We get dozens of such calls and thus when the female P.O. arrived on scene she asked for backup and they were able to apprehend the offender.
For all of you prejudiced male P.O.'s who think women don't belong in law enforcement what do you think now? She did a great job! Way to go!

In regards to the comment about only shooting at 25yds...did anyone in the L.A. shootout shoot over a hundred yards? (no) In fact one offender was killed with a rifle from about 25 yds. In an urban enviorment that long shot is not going to present itself very often unless a sniper has to pick some one off.
I have hunted deer for many years with a rifle sighted @ 100 yds, and never have taken a shot from further than 50 yds, because alot of forest is always in the way.
I agree with what you say and I have also hunted deer for many years. I don't doubt that the L.A. shootout was at close range. With all of that said, you still sighted in at 100 yards even though you never get a shot beyond 50. My point is and was that it's a rifle not a pistol. We should have a place to shoot the rifle at least at 100 yards. I know that the battle sight for the m-16/m-4 is 25 meters on the standard military target (which is quite small by the way) for sighting in only. Qualifications for the Army is 50 to 300 meters on timed pop up targets. I have shot that course many times during my service and for the city officials to say to me and to all service guys on this job that our military experience isn't good enough and that they know better strikes me as insulting. 25 yards is not acceptable.
I agree with Jody Weis demanding that coppers who want to carry heavy weapons should pass the POWER test!
Imagine some of these out of shape big belly chain smoking Harolds Fried Chicken eating kielbasa sausage head coppers with long guns. There would be no worries about long guns being stolen from cops in burglaries. Hell, you would have a lot of long guns forcibly taken out of the hands of some of our rather corpulent and out of shape coppers. Your Lt. Richiescotchbreath, that dumb sixth district sarge, and shavedshortcock would be the first to lose their rifles. Idiots on this job would be having ADs while showing the rifle to their baby mamma. No siree only a select few physically fit SWAT qualified cops with the necessary specialized training and experience in responding to active shooters should have long guns. If you can't pass the POWER test you should not even have a handgun let alone an M-4. You should be sent to the callback unit until you can get your waistline below a size forty and can whip out forty pushups in two minutes after a nine minute mile run. Before asking for a rifle try and get some street experience, common sense, and an ability to verbally finesse a situation.
Believe me, If it gets that bad on the streets and our CPD SWAT can't handle it, the FBI HRT Team would drive their Suburbans straight off the back of a C130 and arrive to save the day.

Im not on SWAT but I have to think that the guys on SWAT are good shots. Passing your yearly qualification with a %100 does not make you a good shooter. Also without a direct comparison how would you know? The SWAT boys have at least competed with each other and proved they could shoot. That says something more than some jagoff claiming to be an ace.
I also would like to add that I believe beat po po should have a rifle and shotgun available to them.

Its comments like this, and some of the others that scare me about this department. Next time you sit in roll-call, look at the cops that are in the room. Look at the cops that just checked off, look at the cops that are coming on at the end of your tour. Do you want them armed with an M-4/AR-15? I’d say 1/5 of them shouldn’t be on this job! Dumb, lazy, ignorant, medical abuse, crazy, scared and the list goes on and on. On the other hand, we have the “Want-to-be-Rambo’s” / Conspiracy theory nuts who just can’t wait to shoot someone. There is at least one on every watch! You want one of them with an M-4? I don’t trust some of them with more than a sling-shot! You know some one is GOING to fuck this up by bringing the M-4 out on a traffic stop/domestic/bullshit detail!

The thing that is holding them from getting to the Dist/Units is the locking device in the trunks. The Dept doesn’t have the $ to put them in the cars, but yet, can find cash for GPS. Un-fucking-real! I’ll give it to the new Supt for putting the rush on the M-4’s, but parts of the order were made up nit-wits! And giving us GPS before the locking devices, well, You had me Jody, the you lost me!
There were 20 cops on scene against (1) man armed with a rifle! Boo fucking hoo. If he was wearing body armour that would be a different story, but he WASN'T. This one incident out of maybe 2-3 in the city this year doesn't mean we need EVERYONE to get rifles!If you want to talk about "outgunned" I could tell you a few stories when I did my time in Iraq!
First off you are going to have these IDIOT cops pulling them out for EVERY man with a gun call.
PROBLEM: You arrive on-scene with rifle in hand and shithead runs and starts hopping fences...oh wait let me put my rifle back!
Second you will see this IDIOT coppers pulling them out on Domestics or traffic stops.
PROBLEM:You pull over one of the great Reverends and you have rifle in hand...tomorrows headline in Scumtimes "Rogue Machine gun cops are making City into War Zone"
Third you use your High powered rifle and take out a few innocents. PROBLEM: you will be sued and have to have a good defense on why you chose your RIFLE over handgun.
NOW...say another LA bank robbery happens then a chosen few will have them and respond. But These IDIOT coppers will fuck up and get them taken away before we REALLY do need them.
SOLUTION: Expand SWAT and have a NORTH and SOUTH team roaming around the city who will have these rifles and respond accordingly. Not these IDIOT beat cops who should only be answering there jobs try and "play" SWAT.

If you ever actually worked the street, then you know 20 officers don’t show up at once. It was one female officer, who probably shocked the shit out of these two guys by jumping out on them (oh, yes! The second guy had a handgun in his hand—we forgot to mention that!), and luckily another unit arrived quickly after. THEN the cavalry came.

The Soto case proves just how bad the detective division has become..In Chicago, if a criminal is not captured with the smoking gun in hand chances are he'll never be arrested. If he is then even bigger chance he will not be convicted.
I know, all the detectives complain about all the changes and yes, the 48 hour rule, warning to witnesses, and videotaping have made things nearly impossible. But you need to change to keep up. No one knows you guys on the street so they don't trust you to come forward..I know of one homicide in my district where an officer continues to get info which he gives to the dets and yet nothing..Hey Supt.Weis, put the dets back in the districts...Save electricity on computerized solitaire... You know maybe if you spent a little more time tightening up the case and less time patting yourselves on the back because you finally made a case.....

Yes the insurgents were more armed than the US Army!!!! That includes any small operations unit as well. Its very easy for anyone to call in an air strike from a specter gun ship! The biggest laugh I got from some of the guys who got the special training was when they said we shot at 25 yards. That's it. 25 yards with a rifle is NONSENSE.Don't we have any place we can shoot at 100, preferably 200 yards? Then they showed me the order about only keeping 18 rounds of ammo in the magazine. Who came up with this BS? In all my years in the service and as a competitive shooter I have never seen or even heard of a weapons malfunction due to loading the magazine to capacity.To top it all off, the only ammunition authorized is the obsolete 55 grain round. Everyone has dumped this round in favor of the 62 grain round. Who writes these weapons orders? What expertise does this person have? Where do they come up with this crap? This only reinforces my personal belief that no one in the training division has a clue about weapons whatsoever. I'm astonished that were not all still carrying revolvers the way this department "Works".

this will be the only time I address all the SWAT hating BULLSHIT. First, whoever said the crap about Beat cops being idiots was not on SWAT. We all respect beat cops because #1..it's where we are from and #2..it's where 90% of us will wind up if we are ever dumped or "get too old for this shit." and #3..it's where the majority of our friends work. Second, SWAT is open citywide for anyone to try out. And finally, THERE IS NO MERIT MANAGEMENT CRAP ON SWAT...you either pass or fail and go home (but you can practice and try again). By the way the MERIT crap was tried by some during the last test and their wack was told to go wack off.

--funny, I have never had a malfunction in any of my H&K 30 round mags. Stay away from military contract garbage and you should be ok! On the down side, the H&K mags cost $45 each vs D&H Ind. aluminum mags at $12 each
