Iowa Media Covers Mette
- Joshua Zapata and James Nichols, two young Chicago police officers, were in the front row of the courtroom Thursday for their buddy's argument before the Iowa Court of Appeals.
The back of Zapata's black T-shirt had the words, "Just because I am a police officer doesn't mean I'm supposed to take a beating." The quotation was from Mike Mette.
Under those words, in big white letters, was "Injustice in Iowa."
The entire article is very pointed in its criticism of the Iowa justice system. Most tellingly:
- Iowa Assistant Attorney General Linda Hines, who argued the case for the prosecution, told the appeals court judges that Mette, after being shoved, could have pushed back instead of decking Gothard. Or, Hines said, "He might have said, 'Stop, let's talk about this.'"
Which brought a chuckle from a few of the cops in the room who spend a good chunk of their time dealing with flailing drunks. Judge Terry Huitink, apparently not impressed with the argument, stopped Hines and asked, "Are you suggesting Mr. Gothard was amenable to conversation at this point?"
It's amazing that Iowa expects its citizens (and guests to their state) to back down from confrontation lest they offend criminals. We had believed that farm-folk were a more hardy bunch, but evidently, we were ill informed.

It is good that the department is attempting to wipe out dozens of bad apples and increase homeland security by employing the new Superintendent. It is time to reduce the focus on police corruption and bring up the morale necessary to operate a crime reduction force. In order to do so the upper management should not be comprised of experience which is primarily interested in police discipline. It should be comprised of crime fighters with common knowledge willing to work together with the proactive police officers attacking the problems facing the doc areas (high crime spots). Decorated officers with tactical knowledge and basic degrees in social justice should not be expected to carry out full legal aggendas. They should be supported by the city councel for there honest brave efforts. I am not a very intelligent guy but I am speaking from the goodness of my heart. January 1, 2009 is around the corner. The police strike must come to an end. The high crime rate will be noted as well as mistakes that were made in the function of the local government. Our families as well as families of citizens are depending on a peacefull outcome which will reduce the violence in the city of Chicago. The intentions of those that do good and fight evil will have to be supported by the fair administrators of the judicial system. Let us work together and not appart. I've had a few drinks in my own abode and I am telling it like it is. 99% of us became cops because we want to keep people safe and have good public relations. I don't have much more to say. If I wanted to complain about something I could go all night. When you look at someone that did something wrong make sure to acknowledge the things he/she did right. Things were done right for you, the citizens, our family and friends.

Hines comments, "...(Mette)could of pushed back" and "Stop, lets talk about this,” prove her naiveté. The scary part: The FEMALE judge lacked the COMMON SENSE to find Mike Mette NOT GUILTY. The FEMALE Attorney General, Linda Hines, with her above comments, lacked the COMMON SENSE to drop this case and release Mette immediately. I am not a female basher, but this is a concern. White females are brought up playing “Barbie”. Males are fighters. Look at the toys males play with from an early age: GI Joe, Grand Theft Auto etcetera. Male toys are aggressive. Female toys are passive. When it comes to fighting, most females don’t get it.

I played "Barbie" when I was little but my father also taught me how to shoot a gun and a rifle. I highly recommend it. The judge and the Iowa asst.attorney gen. don't have a clue. You can't reason with a drunk, especially if he is hell bent on getting his point across. I'll never step foot in Iowa unless it is to help Mette. He is a good cop and deserves to have this whole mess dropped with an apology from the Iowa judicial system.

PS...My family takes an annual vacation to the Amana Colonies in Iowa every year. We've been doing this for at least 10 years or so. This year, I put my foot down and said "NO way am I spending any of my time or money in that state".

...were they former lovers like the two idiots in Texas?? Now those sentenced to fry are getting all their appeals looked at because neither of them bowed out of the case due to conflict of interest. If there was a huge unethical conflict of interest, there may be criminal sanctions placed upon those goofs. I don't think you civally sue a prosecutor or a judge. There would be a gazillion lawsuits...especially in crook county.

Mike Mette's attorney stated at the appelate hearing that no where in Iowa law does it state a victim must run, run and keep running from an agressor.
I tend to beleive him and disregard all of the other bullshit.

One judge convicted Mike Mette in Iowa. Sept. 11 hearing is the first opportunity for anyone in the Iowa Judiciary to respond to the trial judges decision.

As for the post about white females not knowing how to fight..Any copper on here who is not teaching his daughter self defense better get started..Give them an ASP and Pepper spray to carry as well and teach them to use them, that of course until our carry and conceal laws change..How many stories have we heard over the years of attacks on women and by-standers did nothing..Give your daughters a fighting chance...
I'm glad it's finally in the appellate court where maybe justice will be done.
There were numerous errors in how this case was handled from the beginning (waiver of jury) and how the trial judge abused her discretion (her own findings of fact, when applied to Iowa law as it now exists, don't support her verdict).
At most Mette should have received a city ordinance ticket.
