Not One New Car?

True or false?
  • O/T A lot of exempts got new cars this year. How many new marked cars hit the streets? Oh thats right; none, zero. Fleet didn't purchase one new car for patrol this years. The few 08's out there were purchased last year in 07.
We did notice that fewer than normal new cars showed up this year. We know that Fleet canceled an order for Crown Vics after Ford reported they were discontinuing the model, shifting the Department focus to Tahoes instead.

But not even spending a dime on new cars? One hundred fifty recruits in the face of six hundred retirements. No contract raises. Aren't those Olympics paid for yet?

UPDATE: A lot of people saying we're mistaken as to the discontinuation of the Crown Vics. We thought we recalled that was one of the reasons given for canceling the order of cars this year, but it seems our memory is faulty. The fact remains that we've had few if any cars delivered at all this year. Fleet sucks ass.

As an old time exempt member told me once, there is more in-fighting at HQ about who gets a new car, what color the pin stripping is and where their parking space is than any conversation about the good of this department. Let's face it, most exempts are pompus no-brain assholes. Most of whom should of never even been promoted to the level of detective let alone an exempt position.

This whole job has become a joke. Even when we get nes vehicles at the district level, the D/C and all his little inside asskissers are given new cars they hardly use because they are never on the street as they pass the shit cars down to the working cops.

After 16 years I have become a big fan of do nothing more than you are told to do. Being a hero on this job will get you nothing usless your a boss licker to boot.

Ford is not stopping the production of the CVPI. They are now only a FLEET vehicle, meaning the general public cannot order a brand new Vic. They have to get it from the Poser-R-Us places (like the ones in (013, 014 and 017). But, the Vic is still online for fleet production until 2012 (and I can't see them discontinue they bread and butter on the fleet market, that and they're planning a redesign).

The Tahoe is the biggest piece of shit out there. Whenever I see a civilian driving a GM vehicle, I feel a sense of disgust that I can barely contain. The Crown Vic is hardly better. And what good will a two wheel drive, rear wheel drive SUV do in the snow? I drove one last winter and it got stuck just as easy as a Ford does. In any case, a new vehicle would be nice, but why the hell waste money buying shitty new vehicles. Think outside the box! Toyota trucks are by far the best, even a Honda, Subaru, or Nissan SUV would be kick ass in the snow. To 12:48 AM. The city stickers that are put on department vehicles dont cost anything, except what they cost to produce.

How much sense does it make to charge each city department to purchase stickers for their vehicles? None. Where does the money come from to purchase said stickers? It comes from the city budget. What funds the budget? Partly the purchase by you and the rest of us of city stickers.

Maybe mayor shortshanks will require all PO's to but their own squad car stickers to help the budget crisis.

The only reason the city is getting Tahoes is cause the manufacturer is giving them to the city for free (cause the suv market is falling) in hopes that the city starts changing their police fleet to Tahoes. Think about it it saves the manufacturer money, they can devote the plant to police fleet production and don't have to retool that plant. They could then focus other plants on greener vehicles.

The car makers are giving away gas guzzelers to police departments all around the country to save their asses.

Tahoes - given to city for free from car maker.

TARA - Dept of homeland Security grants, they pay the instructors salaries, and the salaries for the POs when they attend it as well as the overtime for POs who have to cover for the POs in training. They also pay the city rent for that rathole high school where they hold the training.

Fusion Center - Department of Homeland Security grant, again they pay for the equipment and personnel.

LIDAR - DUI grant, again they pay for the equipment, PO instructors and PO students salaries.

The department takes advantage of grants and donations, but budgets for all these POs who are getting covered by the Fed. Just look at at R&D they have five civilians who all they do is write grant proposals. So where is the budgeted money going?

And when is the fed going to ask: How many DUIs did you get with the LIDARs, How many terrorist cells have you exposed, etc...?

I am a city manager for a larger Southwest suburban municipality and i can tell you, since I am the one that ordersthe things for my police department, Ford is making the CVPI at least through the 2010 model year. The only glitch this year with then though, if you want to call it a glitch, is that if you ordered the 2008 models in late production, those orders were delayed by Ford, and in most cases you should be receiving the 2009 models for the 2008 price.

Hey SCC, where did you get that Ford announced that they were discontinuing the Crown Vic/ police interceptor. Ford motor company will be building the CV/PI until at least 2011. You can go to "fleet.ford.com" click on police vehicles and see the 2009 model. The fact is that the dept. was 480 cars short when J fed came aboard. Fleet had an order with Ford for 300 cars which would have left the dept. 180 cars short. J Fed wanted Tahoes, the Mayor orders Fleet to cancel the Ford order and buy Tahoes. Fleet cancels the Ford order and places an order for 160 Tahoes which will leave the dept. 320 cars short. The order for Fords was canceled because J Fed wanted Tahoes not because Ford announced they were discontinuing the production of CV?PI. As for WAGONS, fleet let the contract for the purchase of new wagons expire. In order for fleet to buy wagons, specs have to be detailed and let out to bid. That process can take a year from start to finish. The rolling stock of the dept. is in sad shape and relief of the vehicle shortages is far in the distant future if ever. I am not optimistic that Fleet will ever get the police vehicles back to where it should be or where it was when it was controled by the police EMMD.

Hi People, Missy here.

I was away with my lawyer husband. He took me with him to NYC for a "woman rights seminar". Then to the annual A.C.L.U. awards presentation. No, my hubby did not get an award. He is just a card carrying member.

I seen many of the people here are writing nice things about me. To these many-many people, a "BIG-BIG THANK YOU & HUG".

You all know me to ne a parking ticket "GURU". Last night I was walking "Skippy", my baby shit-shu.

Well, I seen one of those "Revenue agents" on the 1400 block of North Dearborn. You people know me as a "People-Person" so we chatted.

What a nice person. I walked with her while she wrote and wrote. I got so-so excited watching her use that mini-computer ticket writer.

She got a good one. She pulled out her "ruler" and found that a car was to far from the curb. I was just in "AY".

We are friends now, and she told me that she writes 100 tickets a day. "For our beloved mayor".

When I told her I am a parking ticket "GURU" and wrote 300 to 500 parks a day, this nice lady nearly fainted. I told her my great uncle, Tom Byrne (rtd) will be getting a call from me about her. Uncle Tom, I bet will her promoted so she can lead by example like me.

Please-Please people, write an extra ten a day of parkers. The Mayor needs the $ to get this city out of the hole.

And for us getting a raise, I think we should just forget it until Mayor Daley gets on his feet with the city money problem.

One last thing, there is only one Missy here people.

Be safe people,
Missy 1st. district.

This has been happening for years with S&S. They lease all of their heavy equipment and found substantial savings doing that. Now they're doing that with their lighter service vehicles. One thing that is being explored is the leasing of all city fleet vehicles. I doubt that they would do marked squads but the unmarked vehicles have been looked into.

I'd be interested to know what they're doing as far as a redesign. As far as I can see, it'd have to simply be a refreshing as opposed to a whole new vehicle, as Ford doesn't have that much money for fleet vehicle product development, and the CV is very cheap for it's size (I've heard Ford can turn a $2k profit selling them at $18k).

Yesterday, several officers made mention if covert vehicles were to have GPS installed. Well I reached out to my C.I. at OEMC and he or she related that probably not. No GPS for the coverts. However, the C.I. explained that there are GPS systems that are portable and are secured under the dash of a car (such the case for a covert). Theses systems are not quite as good as the ones currently being installed in our broken down fleet (2,500 to be exact) but if the signal for help is given, the portable GPS will find you within a 100 foot area. (WOW)

Having explained this, the officers who have a covert, enjoy it. Burn the city's gas. I not envious of you if you earned it and have at least 15 years on, otherwise....well you got my message.

1.) Ford is not discontinuing the Crown Vic police car. Its a good vehicle and a good seller.

2.) They're getting the Tahoes for next to nothing because the public doesn't want them anymore. It is also a good vehicle with very comparable mileage to the Fords. They are more expensive to repair though.

It would be good for us to get either, as long as they're new.

And when is the fed going to ask: How many DUIs did you get with the LIDARs, How many terrorist cells have you exposed, etc...?

9/10/2008 09:46:00 AM

They have only 1 person working in the grant section for the past 6months or so. They keep quitting, and the hall does all the hiring. So you know how well thats going.

When you apply for a grant, there are reporting requirements for statistics. But if you write well, DC is satisfied and will continue to give you more money. They are only concerned about misappropriation of funds.

LIDAR uses federal DUI money but they have nothing to do with DUI enforcement. Most of the LIDAR unit are not trained in DUI. That is a complete fraud. Traffic receives millions of dollars in grant money from IDOT and Feds. Where is the over sight?

Seriously!!! As much as anyone would want a free day off with pay, they had no work for you to do even at the station. No doubling up with someone, no driving a car which does not get a lot of use regularly. Wow!!!

two comments, first. We used to get anywhere from 300 to 500 cars a year, so that means a lot of money has gone missing, AGAIN!
secondly, wasn't Enterprise involved in a big scandle connected with city hall many years ago? Maybe the good old boys are resurfacing again.

I happened to have to go to A/1 Garage and on the east side of the radio shop lot there were about 6-8
black 2008 Tauras' parked there. I think they are going to the D units. but they also had a load of what they call front line crown Vics. These are cars used for the bossess when thier regular cars are down, What about the men in blue, I'm an older Sgt. who cares about the guys.

Outside #3399, driver's door can't be opened from inside or out. Guess that car will last forever, at 102 K miles. No-body wants to drive a death trap, Ergo - no additional miles.

The cars are "spares" for the bosses and burke's and daley's + the tresurers (whoever that is), all have very low mileage and are fully equipped but you must be "elite" to drive it! More daley bullshit! Hey boss could you free up thse cars? Thanks in advance!
