- Introducing a new cell phone text option to give students at 10 pilot schools a way to secretly text police about concerns at their school or neighborhoods. Weis called on students to message anonymous tips from their cell phones to CRIMES (274637) and begin the message with the letters "CPD." Officials are offering $1,000 for tips leading to arrests.
The schools are Dyett, Douglass, Gage Park, Harper, Sullivan, Crane, Phillips, Richards, Hirsch and Fenger High Schools. The schools were chosen for a variety of reasons, including geography.
Geography? Right. We can hardly wait for the calls to start rolling in from these paragons of CPS excellence - crime will plummet! Plummet we say!

Do not get caught up in taking police action based upon annonymous tips,if something goes wrong they will fire you. This recently occurred to one of us.
Officials are offering $1,000 for tips leading to arrests, and any student from any school in the city may text tips to the police.
If I had a child enrolled in a Chicago school I’d borrow their cell phone for the day and drive my squad car over to my favorite corner dope dealer on the beat. I’d text in a detailed description of who he is, what he’s doing, and his precise location, then swoop in and make the arrest.

LOL youir right! watch though how many lies are texted and we will repond to! How many schools will have to be emptied so we can serach and the kids go home early? The solution is simple, hire more police, pay us a decent wage, contract need I say more, 10 hour days, 55 and 80%, free health care at 55 not 60 many woulrd retire and you could hire the kids in at less pay, cars that run, stop the clout process, I am tired but so much more!

In theory I suppose it's not a bad idea but for every 1 legit text they will get there will be 1000 more that are nonsense. Who's to say which is which until WE are forced to respond to it taking more resources off the streets to figure it out.

What a joke! If you text in school you get your phone confiscated by the teachers. Phones are not allowed in school! Is 911 hiring teens to process these messages because if you read them they don't make any sense.

Why should only certain schools have this ability? Read the article (on line, of course) and the caller gets a verification # and a phone # that they can check back on the progress of their tip/clue, and how to collect their reward. What a joke, to bad I'm not laughing. As some readers responded to the article, they had some good points. Drug dealer turns in the other drug dealer, thereby upping his own profits. And of course its all anonymous.

I was wondering that this might be a better idea than a side job for P.O.'s.......go set up a surveillance......pick out someone who's out on the tip working and before you go grab him up and his shit hidden in a cheeto bag along the fence ill text this to that number and then hen it comes out ill have my partner take it and then bango.........we get a head.....court date and split the 1,000......dont know ho long this will work but it might make arresting someone a lil more legitimate $$$$$$$.......or at least show jfed how really stupid this idea was........... Texting or cell phoning the police probably won't protect you. Technology is a nice convenience for solving tasks, but it's not always great for security.
