Arrest in Metra Cop Slaying

  • Authorities intend to charge a 20-year-old Gary, Ind., man with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Metra Police Officer Thomas Cook in a train station parking lot in Harvey over two years ago.
A source close to the investigation told the Tribune that the man was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing Monday morning. Court records show he is currently in jail awaiting trial on an unrelated attempted murder charge, from less than two months after the Sept. 27 slaying of Cook, 43, of Dyer, Ind.
Hopefully, the State can close the books on this one with a court win and an execution.

I have gotten to know the Cook family well over the last few years. They are some truly classy people who did not deserve this. I can only hope that this coward gets the death penalty for doing this horrific act.

Any new developments in the execution-style murder of Canine Officer Thomas Wood, Maywood P.D. as he was sitting in his parked squad car on October 23, 2006?

I have been fortunate to have gotten to know some members of the Cook family and their all good people. They have a long history in law enforcement which makes this even more difficult for some to deal with. This guy was not only a good cop, but also a military man, and one hell of a family man too. It's too often that cops get a bad wrap do to the actions of a couple here and there. But officer Cook was exactly the opposite. He was devoted to his wife and kids also to the job.

He may not have been CPD and I know it's not the point. But everyone should look at this as it unfolds. It's not everyday that the scum, who snuck up behind officer Cook and shot as he did paper in his car is brought to justice. I have seen flaws in our system, and at times it's made my jaw hit the floor. But I am a believer that justice will me carried out this time

"Woody" was a great guy and dedicated to serving the community of Maywood. It is a shame that the crime has not been solved.
