FOP Sued - Part II
The FOP is being sued over the decision to cover Burge's legal fees and not covering two particular black officers' legal fees. Here's the Tribune article again:
- On Wednesday, one current and one former Chicago police officer filed the lawsuit against the Fraternal Order of Police for racial discrimination.
Raysurnet Morris and William Whitaker, who both are African-American, say the union refused to pay their legal fees, while at the same time funding Burge's defense. Burge is white.
The suit also asks the union to pay damages and defense fees.

Well, if you want to learn about the Chicago Police Dept. and Chicago Fire Department, your time has come. For the new year, I am setting up a basic informational class and firehouse/police station tour for high school and college students interested in these fields.
This class will give you not only an overview of all of these professions, but you will meet young people in your age group who share the same interests and values as yourself. Don't waste time, let me know who you are, what school you attend, your grade level and what field you are interested in.
A date will be set up based on the numbers of interested candidates and students who need service learning hours for high school requirement will be granted 10 hours. This will most likely take place on the Northside of Chicago in the coming weeks.

Cop charged in sex abuse of teen girl

Feb. 2--A Chicago police officer who slipped his phone number to a 15-year-old girl during Traffic Court has been hit with criminal charges after allegedly having a sexual relationship with the teen, authorities said Tuesday.
William Whitaker, 40, had written the girl's father traffic citations following an accident in July, Cook County prosecutors said.
She was in court with her father in September, authorities said, and the man told Whitaker the girl was 15. The officer still discreetly gave the teen his phone number, said Assistant State's Atty. Kathleen Muldoon.
"The victim did call," Muldoon said.
What allegedly followed was the officer taking the girl to a South Side motel on a number of occasions and engaging in sex, the prosecutor said.
He is charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and Judge Kevin Sheehan set bail in the case at $175,000.
Muldoon said the relationship was discovered when school officials noticed the girl being picked up from school early and getting into a green BMW. The car's license plate was written down, Muldoon said, and the car belonged to the officer.
Investigators allegedly have recovered six motel receipts in the case, which correspond with dates the girl left school, prosecutors said.
Defense lawyer Joseph Roddy told Judge Sheehan that Whitaker is an 11-year police veteran who is married and has three children. He was stripped of his police powers Jan. 13, Roddy said.
Police officials said the case has resulted in an administrative investigation. Whitaker has been placed on desk duty, police said.
He had most recently been assigned to patrol in the Gresham District, officials said.

Morris has a pretty good case. It all stems from our beloved bitch, Capt White. Seems like the Capt gave the officer a direct order not to have any contact with another officer (whom she was previously involved with), and his family (brothers/sisters/mother...). Morris had known this officer and his family for a long time prior to the relationship. There is a little more to the story than this, most of which is un-important to this incident. The major grevence is; does the Capt have the athority to tell you whom you can talk to on or off duty?
Now, remember, everyone in this department is afarid of Capt White, for a number of reasons, some fact, some fiction... but she always seems to get her way.

If I remember correctly the FOP did begin a "Defense Fund" years ago.
The dues were raised $1.00/check and that was to go into a seperate account for the defense fund.

I know Whitaker and always thought he was a strange dude and probably should have been fired long ago. However, I believe he was AQUITTED at trial. I don't believe he's asking that his criminal case fees be paid by FOP, only legal fees incurred fighting to regain his job. Was he a dues paying POLICE OFFICER at the time of his legal problems? (YES) Was he acting in his capacity as a P.O. when he was allegely playing R. Kelly? (NO)
Don't know Burge at all, I can only go by what I've heard and read. Was he a Dues paying Police Officer when he allegely gave false testimony? (NO, retired LT.) Was he a working Police Officer when charged with a crime? (NO) Is he charged with anything that he did as a Police Officer? (NO)
So if its good for one, why not all. I think there should be a standard for when our dollars are used to defend anyone, not a case by case system. And who decides?

I agree 150% SCC. My dues are for members trying to enforce the law and arrest bad guys. I am not convinced that Burge is guilty of the allegations his accusers and their lawyers claim, since they will all profit from lying. None of these men are honest or law abiding citizens.
In cases regardless of race, officers who intend to commit criminals acts are not worthy of a FOP support. Fuck them.
Any officer who is out there working and trying to do the right thing is entitled to service.
It is a gray area when officers who get into personal shit off duty that is not work related. In these cases wiser men/women should decide.
I would suggest that the FOP provide stats on the race of those represented in court. I would further suggest that no officers support any fundraisers for bad cops. We must judge our own the hardest.
Do typical cops make enough that they can afford BMWs? Might be a story there.

No one is denying the fact the Wilson brothers were the scum of the earth but because of the abuse by some police officers these two brothers could have been sent free. Luckily for us, there was other evidence linking them to the murders. Integrity is very important and should be very important to each one us. Why would you jeopardize your career for some criminal? The allegations against Burge by his accusers and their lawyers is irrelevent at this point.
Burge is now under indictment by the US Justice Dept. for lying under oath in a deposition years after retiring as a police Lieutenant. The allegation is that Burge gave a different response to the same question in two separate depositions, in civil suits against the City, years apart from each other. The US Attorney assumes that 'if you weren't lying then, you must be lying now'.
It would seem that contradicting responses, under oath, in sworn depositions, would be rather simple to prove, one way or the other. This is where the legal defense fund comes in, however. A team of lawyers, WITH AN UNLIMITED AMOUNT OF MONEY TO SPEND, can keep a case like this spinning around in the court system for years.
So why not just plea bargain and settle for probation, you ask? Because, although fired from the CPD, Burge has never been convicted of any criminal acts, and is therefore still receiving his lieutenants police pension. A plea of guilty to the felony charges he is currently facing would mean forfeiting his pension.
Can you say credit. Probably lives with some fat breeder in public housing. If you can get to live in a $400,000 house in Olympia Fields (albeit short lived) while working at McDonalds (subprime lending democratic fiasco compliments of the 1st Black President Bill Clinton) does one think that the banks weren't financing these luxury cars?

I've worked for White, I know Morris, and how much of a goof she is. I know the other Officer is probably one of the better officers on the job, and I know him and what he has been through. And if I’m taking sides here, I’m definitely on his!
I do believe Morris was wrong in this OVERALL situation. The stalking, the CDTV, harassment…. If I remember correctly, these two paid investigators concluded some abuse occurred but the statue of limitations expired. So no charges could be brought forward. Unfortunately, I am not a liberal and the abuse that I am referring to is from the Wilson brothers. These two guys were abused (booking photos) and (I am not saying they didn't deserve it) but there was a time and place for payback and it should not have occurred after they were brought to the station. Secondly, I never mentioned anything about a torture box. I heard stories about it and I don't know either way if it existed. Again, I am neither a liberal nor piece of shit. I was the police for a long time until I realized that there is more to policing than locking up bad guys. It takes years to realize this concept and believe it or not, the police are not always right. I will always stand up for a fellow officer but if the officer crosses the line then that officer should suffer the consequences. As I said before, integrity is very important.
