John Knight Remembered
From an e-mail we received:
- Dear SCC, We need your help to publicize a gathering of friends of Officer John Knight, who was killed in the line of duty in 022 on 09 Jan 99. Maybe a separate thread on the blog? We would appreciate it. Thank you.
The 10 year anniversary of the untimely death of Officer John Knight is coming up Friday, January 9th. We are having a get together at the Stadium Club, 116th and Western, where all of John's friends can get together, enjoy some good food, and trade your favorite stories of working with him. Food is being donated by the bar owner, Danny Cullinan, and we are going with a "Feed the Kitty" system for paying for the refreshments (everyone drops $20 in the bucket by the bar, and the bartenders pull from there to pay for refreshments. If money runs out, the hat gets passed around for an extra $5- 10 to cover more refreshments and/or tips for the bartenders).
Count on a very good time, and please be kind to the people working there. They are always FANTASTIC to us.
Please contact Sgt Dawn Melchert (022 Tact) at 773-218-5066 to RSVP. We need to give the Stadium Club a good headcount to know how much food to prepare.

I met John when he was a security officer at Daley College. He spoke enthusiastically about wanting to become a Chicago Police Officer and follow in his fathers footsteps. He was fun to be around and always very friendly. What I remember the most about him was his smile and kindness.
I lost touch with him after finishing my associates. We had a mutual friend and both of us ended up working together in the same City department.
When I learned about John's untimely death, occurring not too far from where I grew up, I felt a profound sense of sadness that this fine man that I knew lost his life pursuing his dream.
I'll never forget Johnny.
Sounds like a good time I will call John will always be remembered!
I will never forget Officer John Knight. My husband was a PPO and we were expecting our first child when he was killed. Though I did not know them, it broke my heart to see his wife and children. This tragedy opened my eyes and emotions to what it really meant to be a wife of a police officer.
God Bless the Knight family, you will always be in my prayers.
Sounds like a great time, I worked with John in 007 back in the day and he was a great guy.

John Knight-R.I.P. and Jimmy Butler were/are two great coppers.
Found in vicinity of 103rd & Kedzie. Nice and obediant dog. Wearing cpd band collar. Call Margaret Susnis in 022 312 745 0570 and describe the dog for return.
just an fyi, i work in another district and have heard of many people who are going but are not sending an rsvp including myself, hopefully this will still be ok and we are not crashing the event.
I met Officer Knight's partner online over 9 years ago when I started my police memorial forum. Will never forget how he spoke about him like a brother ... the love in his heart...
Please call Dawn and give her a headcount of people attending from your unit, as best you can. We don't want to run out of food by not having enough made.
Also, please call by 06 Jan 09. Dan Cullinan needs the headcount earlier than expected.
I was working in 025 at the time of his death. HEARTBREAKING... to say the least. The Funeral was what had to be the coldest day of the year. Such an incredible turnout, supporting th family. One of the Guys decided to collect money for John's Family...Never have I had such pride to be in 025, or to be a Policeman. we collected a LOT of money, so much that the 022 Tact Officer who accepted it was FLOORED. The foundation wrote a beautiful letter of thanks, but no thanks was necessary. Thank YOU John. You will never be forgotten.
this is a great thing to do not only for John, but it would be really nice to see others do it too for our numerous fallen brothers. Lord knows it could have been and still can be any of us, at any time. Please, always remember, and keep a spot in your hearts for our fallen heroes and brothers in Blue. It seems these days, that very few people are on our side, other than ourselves. Our families, friends, and fellow officers are really all we have. I really hope to see coppers from all jurisdictions show up.
Ten years, it seems like it was yesterday.Never forget.
How is his partner doing? He was a great guy. I met him and his wife at a function. I know back then he was not holding up too good. Just wondering and letting him know we are also keeping him in our prayers.
A fitting tribute to John and his family and friends.
If you worked with John in 007 or 022 I’m sure I’ll see you there; if you didn’t know John then please show and see what the meaning CPD camaraderie and pride was on this job and still is!
John Kupczyk /008
Hey cmdr Kup
Speaking of "pride", when are you going to get that silly latin king colors painted lion removed from the west end of the 008th District? I'm sure some of your tact guys recovered it and brought it there as a joke, but it needs to go. now.
Can't attend due to previous commitment, unable to reschedule.
I DO stop by his name on the "Wall" in D.C. annually during "Police Week" and say a prayer on his behalf though.
I suggest all those unable to support him in person keep John and ALL our departed Brothers and Sisters in their prayers as well.
All Gave Some Because Some Gave All
O'V(r)
Danny Cullinan. Thank you for everything you're doing for our Brother. We will never forget. Love, THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT.
The lions at the entrance of 008 were left by the 1st watch several months ago. Go figure.
Great cause! RIP John Knight and all fallen officers
To the Capon in 008: Grow a testical and get rid of it yourself!
