- I just saw on the 10 o'clock news that J-Fed fired 4 recruits who had started the academy 4 days ago because he was unimpressed with their performance during gym. I know some people will say that we don't need out of shape recruits. But remember, these men or women gave up jobs and made sacrifices to start the academy.
We all remember someone that was huffing and puffing during "Welcome to the Gym", worked hard and came out OK. I have no personal knowledge about these recruits. I am just a little concerned about how arbitrarily J-Fed fires people.
It was the 4th day. Give them a chance. Especially when we are so short on the street. Not enough situps? I can't remember the last time I called time out while wrestling an offender to squeeze out a couple crunches. But then again, we have to make sure everyone knows Jody means business. What a stroke!
This isn't up on the news websites yet. But is this for real? We thought the Academy was a place to prepare these recruits for the streets? Build them up? Get them in shape? These kids took the power test how many weeks and months ago? And four days in, they're fired? How many thousands of dollars have already been invested in their testing, background checks, psych screening, etc? No "Welcome to the Gym?" No "Breakfast Club?" No seeing which recruits might actually be salvageable in terms of a few situps?

Maybe thats what he did. I don't know what the standards are, or how they failed them, but I'd be inclined to give anyone the benefit of the doubt over a few situps this early into such a training cycle.
I have a hard time believing anyone would be that arbitrary. Perhaps there is more to the story.
If they failed the POWER Test after just passing it 3 weeks ago, then SCREW THEM. They didn't prepare or take this seriously. Which I assume it was because your first week the only gym you do is the POWER test. You shouldn't get three chances, unless you failed do to injury, in which case go IOD and get retreaded. If they couldn't pass a simple POWER test then they were probably going to be dog ass recruits that got a star by just scrapping by....
Get rid of the fat F*&^'s now. That Academy is not going to make anyone stronger. They've let 30% slide through the CPD Academy for decades. Most decent coppers found their way once they got to the district. This department is a disgrace. Keeping the weak out early should have been implemented long ago. It makes me sick to look at some people in this uniform.

This could be mixed without more details. Four days in, is about the time you have to take the power test again. Don't forget, taking the power test while in the academy is State mandated. Every academy in the state requires you to do this. If you don't pass the power test four days into the academy, what does that say. And don't forget, they had to have passed it about four weeks prior, just to have started the academy. If it wasn't the power test, but was actually "Welcome to the Gym", that's an entirely different scenario.

It's bad enough with a lot of the old dudes who can't even see their feet now you have recruits that can't touch their feet. some times it's better to get qualified people rather than just anyone.
Don't they have to pass a POWER test prior to getting called on? I was under the impression, from my investigator, that you had to pass the test again before being even offered employment and then again at the end of probation. Grant it this was Nov 2007-Feb 2008, so things may've changed. Did Weis just go in and fire them to be a jagoff? To show his power over them or instill fear in the rest?

When does it stop, I agree with you SCC. They had to pass the power test to get the job. I knew many who had problems with the "welcome to the gym" phase. One guy even passed out and an ambulance was called. This guy is starting to be like our mayor "out of control".
These same four would have gone out on disability and drained our pension. They would be medical abusers their whole career. It's about time we got some standards to weed out the dogs. Grow up people.
The story as told is not true. Here is what actually happened: JFed showed up and the class of recruits was assembled at attention. When they introduced Jody as the Superintendent, four of them couldn't stop laughing and THAT'S why they were fired!
Remember school patrol, Summer Mobile, and the many other functional units we used to have on this department??? get rid of school patrol and wow, CPS students start killing each other. Cutting down on manpower and the extreme lack of morale are directly correlated to the spike in these killings and rise in crime. When is somebody in the media going to grow a set of balls and not let Richie bully them when they ask him the right questions? Start calling JPUD on all his lies, Chicago Magazine hit the nail on the head with its new article talking about the CPD.
They can pass the entrance but fail in the academy? They've turned to lard in just a few months? Me-thinks there might have been some Chicago-style hiring going on and it made sense to fire the "golden" recruits before someone noticed that their performance at the academy didn't match their earlier performance.
It's sort of like hiring a former personal assistant to drive a Streets & San truck. Weis must feel that people are actually watching his performance.
My buddy works at Ernst & Young and he said they are working with the CPD on a new Sgt's test for the end of this year. JPUD wants a hand in overhauling the complete promotional process. One of the many bonehead moves by our clueless leader.
Guys who work out in the gym their whole life always think their tough (ask the guys who got their ass kicked at the Jeff Tap). Some of them are. However, be tough in a leather jacket,body armor,15 pounds of gear around your waist and uniform shoes and hat. Oh yeah, you just chased a kid 10-20 years younger than you down a dark alley, which your not 100% sure where you are, all the while calling it in on the radio. Then when you catch him in a yard, now for sure your not 100% where you are,you're rolling around in the snow and he wants to fight for your gun to kill you! Now you're on the radio and fighting some 5 page rap sheet punk who has done time for everything under the sun.
You know how it usually ends: offender in custody either by the lone officer (showing great restraint and not killing the prick for fear of being dragged through the mud) or with back up from the real police. The men/women who work all hours, 2-3 jobs, family obligations, eat at wierd hours of the day and night and if there's an hour to spare they try to get in a workout to stay ahead of the Grim Reaper. Not the guy who works out in the gym 2 hours a day and looks at himself in the mirror the rest of it.
Is physical and mental conditioning important? You bet it is. Especially in this line of work. However, I'd trust these stressed and slightly out of shape coppers, over the J-Feds of the world, with my life any day of the week.
Stay safe and be prepared mentally and physically for if your life or death challenge hasn't come yet it may be just around the corner. The Devil has many operatives out there.

At this rate no one will "have the backs" of our pension.
I am all for increased standards, both academic and physical, but at least they had to have passed the power test prior to being hired, even if the power test was some time ago. Those PPOs should have been given the chance to exercise for at least a couple of weeks before dropping the hammer on them.
On the other hand, our academy washout rate is abysmal even if not compared to other academies. Plus, back when I was hired there were no power tests and the test that we did have (The Wall) didn't have to be passed until the tenth week. Of course those who couldn't pass it in front of their classmates ALWAYS passed behind closed doors with no one else around.
Again, I don't think those PPOs should have been canned so soon but they should have been working out before being hired. I did.
This is where I disagree. ALL other departments in the state (probably the nation) who have a similar test require you to pass it the entire time. If not you're fired. If you can't keep yourself in shape long enough to pass the poser test, you shouldn't come on this job. We have enough unmotivated losers on this job already.
Second, that is how it is done at PTI and even here for the Metro classes. They do the power test the firstday. If they don't pass they have 48? or 72? hours to retake it and pass. If they fail, they are fired. And think about it, most suburban police departments swear their officers in upon appointment so they are employed by the place they work, some get cars, and have benifits while they are in the academy.. They still fire them if they can't pass a test that 70% of the population can pass...

if this is true, its terrible. when i was in the academy, i couldnt believe how out of shape some of the recruits were, but thats what the gym staff was there for, they would work extra with some recruits so they could better themselves mentally and physically, when the academy was over and it was time to hit the streets, everyone was was in great shape, even the ones who failed the power test the first week in.
My class was the first under the Tobias regime and we had a great guy who was bounced out by Tobias by "failing" a bench press.
This guy passed all the tests including 2 power tests prior to the academy along with 'Welcome To The Gym' and every additional PT class but after 5 months of Academy was bounced out by Tobias.
So after all that prior testing & CPD approved training, he failed?!
I dunno about you but I was in great shape by 5th month of the academy.
I heard that Tobias didn't want to appear soft on PT compared with his predecessor. It's a shame since this guy would of been a great cop.
But it's just another arbitrary and capricious decision made by our command staff.

As someone who struggled through the power test, but was ok in every other aspect of the gym and top of the class in every other aspect of the Academy I just say I'm glad J-fed was not in charge when I was there. I'm in better shape now than I was before the Academy, I work out on a regular basis because I know my weaknesses and not to toot my own horn, am a good police officer and no one cares about how I did on the power test.
There are some people who had no problem with the power test, but could probably hit the broad side of a barn only once with a full magazine, can't make a decision to save their life (or better yet my life) and are not the most aggressive officers around.
Lets face it who would you rather have as a partner?

why i dont agree with 99.9% of shit jfed does, we need in shape coppers. Im sick of seeing these fat and lazy ones on the street. To me its embarrassing to work with a 300lb copper who stops at DD. Dont get me wrong, i stop at DD everyday but I also work out 4-5 days a week and only drink the coffee. I honestly saw a female last week walking out of DD with a bag and she weighed at least 275, DISGUSTING! Im not saying we need bobybuilders or marathon runners but would u rather a guy that can help u in a fight for a few minutes or a 275lb out of shape fatass running to try to save your life? I guess my point to you SCC is we should pick and choose our battles. If the worst thing he does is wants us in shape then i dont see a problem with that! When you whine about dumb shit like this it makes us look bad! Those guys knew they were starting the academy, if you take a job seriously then you should be ready when the academy starts. Correct they had passed the physical a month or so ago to get on the acad. The department has also spent a few thousand on them for the processing and screening but if they can not pass our simple power test the first week of the acad, they should be fired!!
If they can not pass the physical that any 8th grader could do one month after doing it how can you expect them to stay in some kind of physical shape after they leave the acad? I am not talking about some freak who goes to the gym everyday for four hours. For Christ sake. if you walk a few blocks a day or ride a bike a little bit you can do this physical.
It goes into the character of the person knowing that they will have to do this physical in the Acad and do not do the basics to stay in shape for it throughout they acad I do not want to work with them on the street

When I was told I was heading to the Academy, I work out like a mad man. Screw them, how bad do they want the job?
Special J probably didn't even know a class started, yet fire someone for messing up in PT. First clue that its not real is that for the first 2 weeks of the academy there is no PT, everyone is still in business attire. The class started on the 9th. Do the math. I do believe that its possible 4 recruits were probably fired for attempting to purchase narcotics though after starting the academy.

jody was told his 300k salary was not in the stim package, so jody took action and got rid of 4 recruits = 20k a recruit to go through 6months of training+ average 50k a recruit earns a year x4 recruits = 200k grand total 280k . jody needs to fire one more recruit to make his 300k+ job ... watch out recruits in the academy... jody does not have your back......

Were they fat asses? Were they weaklings? Take a look at the 4 and see if you want them as your partner when the civil war starts. My guess is that they were not 275+ APFT performers. UNSAT. Fire them. We want Navy Seals and Infantry men.

A class of 40 cameras will start at the Academy Monday. On Tuesday they will be issued their lens wipes and on Wednesday they will hit their poles.
They ought to have a Superintendent Academy where wanna-be superintendents would go to learn what they were doing before they actually hit the street (ooops, I meant the desk). But then, most of them wouldn't last a week, either.
Physical stanards are there for a reason. Do you think these same people who are so poorly prepared for the academy are going to stay in shape after they get out? No they are going get bigger and even more useless. This should have been done from the very beginning to weed out the many many Po's who never had the intention of being the police.
Good as much as I hate this guy it made me sick that people were allowed to coast through the academy. There was a guy in my class that never passed any tests. They still passed him and about two years after, he got pinched for armed robbery off duty. So lets have some standards.
This again proves the dept. does not have your back! If you came on the job,in the academy with clout though you could be a fatass and still be passed. then promoted all the way up the ladder! I have 2 sons, worked my ass off both went to Notre dame university, in 2005 1 sone starting salary was 110K, the other graduated salary to start $125,000 they studied hard but then again that is the power of the university of Notre Dame!

The info is just a little off. The recruits were not fired. They were put on unpaid leave until the next class starts, probably in May. They had taken the test 2 weeks ago and evidently passed. Word is one guy was 10 short on the sit ups. I agree with you, what kind of mind set is it be launching people that fast. We have paid far to much to get these people were they are to give up that fast
once applied for the Marine Unit.
I passed the swim test and had an interview. I never got picked. Now I was a PADI certified open water diver for years, I also have a Coast Guard "6 Pack," captains license and at the time I owned my own boat. Just wasnt qualified enough I guess. The three people I knew who made it had not one of the three qualifications that I had. Yeah its legit alright.

any moron out there who thinks that the marine unit testing is "legit" well you are just that... A FUCKING MORON! I mean, the guy who swam the english channel had to sue to get in because he didnt have a phone call! But what? It has miraculously changed in policy in the last 5 years that any person sans a phone call can "work hard, put his nose to the grind stone, and have a fair shake at this marine unit?" Imagine if the armed forces fired recruits after 4 days of basic. If all recruits are in top physical condition upon arriving at the academy then we don't need the gym instructors do we? My only thought is that they couldn't pass the physical fitness test that we all had to pass the first few days at the academy. If that's true then J-fed had nothing to do with it. He's just trying to boost his name in the media.

GEU/GES started off with good intentions. During meetings, we were told "No B.S. Missions, No details/parades (with the exception of July 3rd)" Just guys who know what they are doing being allowed to go out and do it.

"We are going to start doing Gang Suppression Missions...." and

More lies as usual, thought I was smarter then to believe what they said. 90 days can't come soon enough, back to the district for me.

I'm not too sure if you heard this word yet but according to sources (seemingly reliable), J-Fed has decided to appeal ALL decisions of the police board which result in officers getting their jobs back. There are currently 2 officers in call-back that had been reinstated by the Police Board, but were subsequently returned to call back after their decisions were appealed. Another officer who received his job back was supposedly taken off the street and placed on desk duty as well. I thought others should know the manner in which the administration continues to "have our backs." For the record, all three officers are hard workers.
There's GOT to be more to this story.
Honestly, it may seem harsh but maybe that's what is needed. How long ago did they take the test? A year ago? A year and a half ago? 2 years ago?
As you go through the processing steps you know you are getting closer to the academy. You would think that if this job was something you wanted to do, you would be prepared for it. The power test is no surprise. I feel bad that they left other jobs, and horrible for them and their families, but if you aren't ready you aren't ready. Maybe their lives were just saved, or their partners lives.
The dogs who take the test just to take it, and don't care if they are successful or not are the same dogs who don't do a damn thing in the district. They make your job even harder by ducking jobs and sitting on jobs.
They learned a valuable life lesson: "A little preparation goes a long way." Chalk it up and move on.
Fuck that! Give them a chance to slip thru the cracks, get hired, become fatter by the meal, endanger other officers' lives for what? If you wanted this job so bad you would bust your ass to get in shape in order to better meet the needs of the already minimal standards. This job isn't for everyone. Let's not try and make it so.
As for quitting their jobs to come here, again, work out you lazy slob. Playing sports on video games or participating in a fantasy football league doesn't make you an athlete. Just as watching COPS doesn't qualify you as a police officer. Although it's close.

When I went thru the academy we had fat, lazy, don't try for shit, drag their asses and cry the whole way gelatenous blobs who made it thru because they didn't want to fire anybody. Now those very same Jaba's are even fatter, more useless and harder to fire.
I work hard, as do a lot of coppers, to stay in shape. Only to be thrown inot the same humungus mold as these sows. I'm sick of it. You see any fat Troopers? Nope. They have a physical requirement. We have hidding places.
I love being a Chicago Cop. I hate being shadowed, sometimes literally, by those who just don't give a fuck. Nip that shit in the bud early and avoid the inevitable outcome. The academy is supposed to be a measuring stick to see who can hack it, who will make good coppers and who won't. It's not promised position.

I understand you are a "at will employee" but not that kind of "at will". With no other form of discipline, progressive punishment and only 4 days in the academy I imagine the city will be paying millions in a lawsuit.
Sorry, I have to disagree with you on this one SCC. You know coming in what you need to do on the Power Test to retain your position, so be ready.
If you feel you are weak in one of those areas, it should have been worked on prior to your call-up. There is always plenty of time to train. If these 4 weren't prepared, than tough, I guess they didn't want it that bad, it's their own fault, nobody else's.
I hope they were hopeless. There were plenty in my class that should not have been hired and I've seen plenty come on that were useless. L.A. an other Departments have a washout rate. Chicago has never weeded anyone out, and the Department shows it.
You can ding the Superintendent on alot of things, but making it a little more difficult to get this star is not one of them in my book. It is damn near impossible to get rid of them once they get on.
The only time ppo's ever got fired in the old days is if they got caught stealing......had one in my class she stole another ppos gun out of a locker and got caught and fired.....the rest usually just quit.

J-Fed could care less about any of the Men and Women in Blue that patrol the streets of Chicago. Like I was taught when I first started on the job, one of the first things I was told by an old timer, "Never trust a Fed." That proved to be true as I went on in my career and had contact with the suits. Does the man even think beyond the recruits and think of their family members, wife, kids? J-Fed, you better hope that if you ever have that chest grabber that I'm not the only one walking by as I will just step over you and keep on walking.
There is a first time for everything. I have to agree w/ J-Fed on this one. I am embarrassed for the department and myself for being a part of it when I see some disgutingly fat body sitting behind a desk or crawling out of a squad car in uniform. This uniform is supposed to demand respect. When you couldn't walk a mile and a half more less run it, then there is no reason or place for you on this department. I understand that there are people who have been injured on this job and cannot perform due to it. That is a different story. I am talking of people that choose to be an embarrassment to themselves.

I know that this is a little off topic but, I am not a member of the CPD but I do have friends that serve & protect this once great city. While eating lunch today and reading the paper I almost spit out my food while reading the Sun-times. I an article about the total of CPS students killed this school year this is what was in the paper.
(Huberman met Thursday with Police Supt. Jody Weis to brainstorm ways to fight city violence, which has claimed the equivalent of an entire classroom of kids this school year.)
This would be like me and a co-worker sitting down to figure out how to solve the problem. Neither of them have ever been the REAL POLICE before. What do they real know about police work and what it takes.
Also be careful, seeing as thou Hubberman is brainstorming with Weis this may be his way to say that he is doing police work and get that pension that he wants
If the dogs are culled from the pack at the 044 level we are all better off. A nothing recruit will be a less than nothing medical abusing no time due for me drain on the rest of us PPO/PO. It’s about time someone at the Academy grew a pair, balls or ovaries, whatever the case may be (shout out RW).
The power test puts you in the 40th percentile which means that 60% of your age group can run your ass into the ground. In stead of bitching about weaklings getting dumped we should be bitching about raising the standard to the 60th percentile so new coppers have a better than average fitness level.
If the job market is that bad we should have 30,000 applicants like back in the day so we can pick and chose. I’m not going to be on much longer but I am staying in the city so I wouldn’t really mind fit young guys and women. I'm just sayin.
I disagree with you SSC, if you can't pass the physical, you shouldn't have the job. It's just a low standard that everyone SHOULD be able to meet.
too bad they should have trained harder; they had months to stay in shape. i'm sick of this city/job making accomidations for the "less qualified". At least in the academy & field training it should be 100% legit. that sends a message too.

In 40+ years I have seen policeMEN on this job, who appear overweight, slow, look like they couldn't run 30 feet without getting winded. Some of these 250-300 pounders were very agile, strong and tough. Tough is the key word unlike some cowards I've seen hired. Apparently not, because the fired ones made no real effort to get into shape or maintain the standard necessary to pass the P.O.W.E.R. test on a regular basis (I believe recruits have to pass that test several times during the course of their training).
If they have this little dedication so early in the game, we don't need them.

The Dept. is now video taping all power tests that are administered to the recruits. If you don't pass your gone. Yes even if you miss one sit-up. It's called a Test. This was not welcome to the gym. The recruits all new they were going to be taking this power test a few days after they started the Academy. Their last power test was 4 weeks ago.
You want a good paying job in a tough economy? Practice your sit-ups or whatever is required for you to remain employed.

There are alot of fat asses on this job. I think that you should have to pass a physical every year just to see if you are healthy enough to be working on the streets. I am too lazy to do that-but it would be motivation to get in better shape and stay that way. Never mind. I take it back. I'm too lazy to exercise.
when i was in the academy, many, many years ago an overweight guy didn't even take the final run. just stood in the center of the gym talkin to the instructor as he clocked us. he said he took the test earlier in the day. the day after probation was over, he became the mayor's driver. yeah, it's all legit.

Well if this is the true account of what happened then all four of these recruits failed the power test in one way or another. It is what it is. The power test is a bare minimum and is mandatory to get throught the acadamy. I'm not saying everyone on the job has to be an olympic athlete but if you can't pass that thing in the acadamy then you will be grossly out of shape and a liability to your partner before you even get off your status. Plain and simple, get through it one way or another or find another line of work.
All joking aside, four days is just total bullshit. Four days isn't enough time to determine anyone's true worth. What a tool this guy is...
I would suggest, as before, running a lot, in full uniform with body armor on, gun and gunbelt, flashlight, cuffs, extra ammo, in police issue uniform shoes. Throw in jumping a few fences enroute, down some dark alleys and gangways, and simulate how it is to chase pookie most of the time. Then the recruits could sink or swim. Do strength training, but only secondary. After the foot run, have the recruit wrestle with Red Man to take him into custody. Be realistic as possible. You can't ask for more physically from a recruit other than what they will be doing frequently, [at least on the South Side] other than to fire some rounds at a target after the extended run. Keep it tough but simple. No Clout, In-or Out, CPD.the fair and honest way for a change.

Standards were established and the recruits were warned one week before entering the academy. The standards are low yet they failed a simple power test. Weiss did the right thing and followed his policy. Set the standards and stick to them. But alas, instead of firing them, he gave them a leave of absence, unpaid until the next recruit class. They will get another chance to pass the power test. So, what is the message sent to the recruits? Weiss needs to make a hard decision and stand by it. We desperately need standards for recruits.

There was a kid that failed the first power test in my class in 2002, it was the sit-up portion but he could run the 1.5 miles in under 10 min. He was forced to wear the sweat suit for an extra week or so but nailed the next test. He's now one fine police officer. After all the expense of finding a decent person to hire they go and fire someone for this is nonsense. They don't run you out of the military for one failed PT test and they shouldn't have for this. If they fail three in a row fine, but the first one should be a gimme. Now we are going to be 4 more officers short at the end of the year. If they want the power test to mean something they should have it the first day of the Academy with a 100 potential recruits and have the top 50 scores (in age/gender groups weighted appropriately) advance to hiring and the rest should have a crack at the next class. This way they start the class with a full load.
the power test is bullshit.
a male and female, same age, enter the academy. it's not impossible that the guy could bench press 100 lbs more than the girl, run the 1.5 miles 2 minutes faster, do more situps and sit and reach further than the female. yet, it's still possible he could fail and she'd pass.
somehow, she gets to stay on the job and he gets fired.
nothing against females- i just think on this job, everyone should have to be able to do the same shit.
when you fight with an offender, the offender doesn't take into account your age and gender.

I'm not too sure if you heard this word yet but according to sources (seemingly reliable), J-Fed has decided to appeal ALL decisions of the police board which result in officers getting their jobs back. There are currently 2 officers in call-back that had been reinstated by the Police Board, but were subsequently returned to call back after their decisions were appealed. Another officer who received his job back was supposedly taken off the street and placed on desk duty as well. I thought others should know the manner in which the administration continues to "have our backs." For the record, all three officers are hard workers.

I am in this class and we took a POWER test February 7 and were immediately told we had another one March 12th. They had plenty of warning! We were even given a phone call 10 days before to remind us again! And reminded every day last week! It was not "gym performance", they failed a mandatory POWER test, that they knew full well was coming, so they got what they had coming.
These plants were feds put there to see if they couild and would actually get fired. Job well done J-Fed. You've truly made a name for yourself. Not a good one but a name none-the-less.

Saw a sgt. I knew at the retirement seminar yesterday. Seems that he showed up for lunch, AND THAT WAS IT.
Talked to a friend of mine in the unit he’s assigned to—financial crimes maybe? (before everybody starts screaming 'who cares, bunch of clout-babies anyway', most people assigned there were there from the unit's inception, no clout involved , and went there when nobody else WANTED to go there.)
This sgt, used to be in IAD. He was overheard by people in the unit that he'd been to the retirement seminar 7 TIMES!!!! I thought there was a rule you could only go twice, which is why I've waited so long to go. But we know the rules only apply to those of us in blue shirts, not white.
Did I mention there's a rumor this sgt lives outside the city??? Who investigates IAD, or ex IAD? I would guess NOBODY.
Was told there ARE a lot of clout-babies in that unit who didn't ever conduct a financial investigation until they were assigned there, including some FOP guy, don't know who.
And wait till you hear this! The rock star/clout babies are assigned to task forces like IRS, FBI, etc., and get ENTERPRISE rental cars to take home, along with......now sit down:
$1300 a month in overtime, even if they don't work it. WHAT THE HELL???
Supposedly morale there is lower than in patrol, and at least 4 or 5 people are thinking of bailing. So all of you clout heavy people, start planning ahead.

And exactly what lawsuit would this be? I've checked with a legal advisor who does work for CPD and she tells me there would be no grounds for a suit as the academy is an "at will" program and recruits can be termed at will. Additionally, remaining in the academy class and then subsequently graduating from said class is completely conditional upon satisfactorily meeting all requirements, including but not limited to, all physical training requirements.
If it was deemed they were not meeting P.T. demands to the satisfaction of the academy staff, including the satisfaction of J-Fed, then terming them from the program is fully within the rights of the CPD.
Give them a second shot, if they fail....Fire Them!
Not to worry:

You can't change the rules once the game has started and that is what Weis did. For whatever reason, I don't know but it probably has to do with him getting his spanking in court over that list. Here's the real story:
52 recruits started on 09 Mar 09.
On 12 Mar they took the P.O.W.E.R. test. (Check the ILSTB web site = only requirement is to pass the P.O.W.E.R. test - it says nothing about 3 times)
4 failed the test. 3 for sit ups one for the run. The one kid that failed the situps by 10 was just home from serving at the US Guantánamo Bay Detention Camp.
All four recruits were placed on an unpaid LOA pending a P.O.W.E.R test with the next recruit class scheduled for May 09.
J-Fraud, Brust, Lodding, Wedster, gym Sgt and HRI's were all present for this P.O.W.E.R test. In addition each and every part of it was completely video taped (so as to alleviate law suits)
Yes, these recruits did take a pre-hire P.O.W.E.R. test approx, 3 weeks prior to their hire date of 09 Mar 09.
I do not agree with the admin. wanting to fire them immediately after failing one P.O.W.E.R. test (my opinion, which does not matter) is that they should be given ample time to train and prove themselves.
The CPD requires three P.O.W.E.R. tests while in training in order to judge ones progress. (again it NOT a state requirement to pass 3 P.O.W.E.R. tests)
Hopefully theses four recruits will have gotten the message loud and clear = go hire a personal trainer and work out everyday for the next 6 weeks so that you do not fail the P.O.W.E.R. test again!
It's about time we got some standards to weed out the dogs. Grow up people.

After only 4 days in the academy? If that's the case then fire the coppers who did their background checks. Fire the coppers who tested them for their first power test because they should have noticed that they were that bad.

Regarding your comment about J-Fuck working in 007 or 011 on 3rd or 1st watch. The first in progress call that was bonafide, J-Fuck would be that streak going the other way. The reason he woudn't attend the academy is he would be bounced after failing all the academics. A Fed is a fed. He is not the police and never will be. If you put him on the street for a year, he still wouldn't have a clue about police work. all J-Fuck is is a mini-me version of King Dickhead Shortshanks.
My buddy works at Ernst & Young and he said they are working with the CPD on a new Sgt's test for the end of this year. JPUD wants a hand in overhauling the complete promotional process. One of the many bonehead moves by our clueless leader.
They are barely at one hundred on the old one and with the budget crunch where will they get the money so not likely. And even if they started now it wouldnt be ready by then.
You have some of the most muscle bound coppers on the street, that when shit hits the fan they stand there with there thumbs up their ass. Six pack, bulging muscles and strength don't do a damn bit of good if you ain't going to jump in when shit hits the fan. I've worked with out of shape cops who would cover your back and jump in while the muscle men just stood there. It's not the shape they are in, but the person. If you don't have the heart to do this job, all the muscles in the world aren't going to do anyone any good. I am just a cop with 20 years on. I may not be able to do the run, thanks to a back injury, but I'll be damned if I see a copper fighting with someone, I'll be the first one to jump in without thinking twice. In my 20 years on this job, there are females I'd work with before many male police on the job. I am a male. I was on a domestic where the guy started fighting. 2 other male cops and my partner, a female. Who stands there while the female officer and I fight this guy. Take a guess. Finally told them is they were going to stand there, at least call for help. To this day I would work alone before I worked with either of those 2. The female I word work with anywhere anytime. She will still kick ass before many male coppers to this day. BTW, she is not a muscle head.
Some day Jody, fate is going to be a real bitch for you. It seems to this citizen reader that those who run the academy should be making decisions as to who passes and remains and who washes out based on what THEY observe over the course of training or whatever period or measure THEY use. The point is the instructors decide, its their academy and their responsiblity to provide fit and well trained recruit graduates. Not this jag off who shows up one day and makes some sort of "command statement". It denegrates the chain of command and command is something Jody knows very little about. He only knows how to denegrate the chain of command. I don't know who is running the Gym now but we need someone like Gus Tero (RIP) back in there. Back in 1994 if you were slacking, you got "Tero Time" on your lunch break. Back in the day, "Welcome to to the Gym" was a 3 hour torture session in the heat that took quite a bit of endurancec and for what? We had a recruit end up in the hospital with blood in his urine from extreme dehydration and the ER staff at Rush, filed a complaint about the the way recruits were ending up in their ER with medical problems that could be life threatening. Why injure someone during training before they even hit the street?

off topic, or maybe on topic:...1) has the academy instituted a "grammar and composition" course, and requirement, for recruits, so that in order to continue their training, they must pass a basic course in English grammar, composition, and writing?; 2) on the subject of physical fitness....if the recruits must pass a power test, or whatever it's called, what about existing employees (in order to continue active employment)? ideas, anyone?....

Just watched the CBS2 news. There is a new law now, that requires home sellers to submit a thumb print at closing(adding $25 in fees)to combat fraud.
I don't get it. It was the undocument "home buyers", with the no verification loans, etc., that caused this whole mortgage meltdown. Yet punish the homeowner looking to sell their home. Because the title company's didn't do their due diligence and now feel victimized!

Yes, you are correct. the new recruits are given a grammar test. Where to put a comma in a sentence and such. If the do not pass they have to go through remedial training. Kinda of like the breakfast club. The Police Department is not interested in Police Officers but Report Writers. Too Many Supervisors are drinking the kool aid. Especially the one in charge of grammar.
I see Sgt. Mike Burke is on the list for commendations again from Area 2...stop jumping on the paper of hardworking detectives Mike....you are a sergeant...how may other sergeants from areas get commendations with their detectives

If they failed the POWER Test after just passing it 3 weeks ago, then SCREW THEM. They didn't prepare or take this seriously. Which I assume it was because your first week the only gym you do is the POWER test. You shouldn't get three chances, unless you failed do to injury, in which case go IOD and get retreaded. If they couldn't pass a simple POWER test then they were probably going to be dog ass recruits that got a star by just scrapping by....

I personally can’t stand Judas Fed! He reminds me of the “Slow” guy in the neighborhood that always wore the “Elmer Fudd” hat, even in the summer. You know the guy, the one that had all the stuffed squirrels, raccoons, opossums… (Only later to find out that cute 7yo from years ago was found buried in his basement). I don’t think he could lead ants to a picnic, and most of us wouldn’t follow him to the bathroom.
However, back on point: If these are the FACTS, well, adios kids…. Too bad, so sad. Losing a job now has got to suck.
Here is the STANDARD: An authorized model used to define a unit of measurement. You are “A” amount of years old, Male: “X” amount, Female” Y” amount in 2 min. Any more, well good for you, any less, well: YOU FAIL! Kinda simple, if you ask me. I had a recruit in my class that did nothing, zero, zip. Oh, I’m sorry, he slept, a lot. Over 10 years later and guess what, he aint doing much more than what he was doing then! Just coasting through the system, collecting a paycheck. Meanwhile, you and I are actually “working” for a living, locking people up. As someone else so pointy stated; “time to nip this shit in the bud!”
Let’s change the scenario a little bit. Here is the STANDARD: You need 5 years on, and 95% on this test to get promoted. You have 6 years and got a 97%. I have 7 years and got a 94%. Should I get promoted? FUCK NO! I know what you’re going to say; “go make your call, kid…” But isn’t that part of the problem that we all bitch about?
What about the recruit that passes the Physical fitness, shooting, but can’t spell his name to save his life? What about the recruit that can’t pass the piss test?
You have to draw a line SOMEWHERE. It’s unfortunate that these 4 happened to find themselves on the other side of that line. It sucks even more knowing that my Time Due will probably be denied next year because we have no manpower.

I agree with 3/13/2009 11:49:00 PM 100%. If the power test was so legit there wouldn't be any difference in standards between sex and age's. I failed the power test in the academy that was around week 4. I got food poisoning from Racine cafe and tried my hardest but I was so dehydrated I almost pasted out during the run. Now if I had been one of the 40 year old females in my class I would have passed with flying colors because the time you had to run was so much longer. When I was called into the sgt's office, I didn't give him my sob story because I really wanted the job and it would have made me look even worse. The sgt offered to come in early every morning and jog with me until the next week when I had to retake the test. Sgt's name was Lopez and last I heard he was a street deputy and a real stand up guy. I know he is in my book.
Look at maggs and carroll. Both were taken care of in the acedemy both have years on the medical. Start at the top you jag ball

a male and female, same age, enter the academy. it's not impossible that the guy could bench press 100 lbs more than the girl, run the 1.5 miles 2 minutes faster, do more situps and sit and reach further than the female. yet, it's still possible he could fail and she'd pass.
somehow, she gets to stay on the job and he gets fired.
nothing against females- i just think on this job, everyone should have to be able to do the same shit.

Not to sound like a jag but if your not in the top 300 then I say take the list down now. If you are in the top 300 and got there on your own I'm sorry. Either way we can't help what this department does. We'll drive ourselves crazy if we try to guess what they're going to do. Nothing makes sense and what does just seems to be over looked just remember to be safe and watch out for the knife they're trying to stick in our backs.
Since when does passing a power test guage what kind of policeman you will be. There are plenty of hardcore workout nuts in my district, some even body builders and they couldn't find their ass with both hands. Many of them are dogasses. I only have a few years on and I can pass the power test with no problem, but this job goes way beyond stamina. If you have a footchase that's going to be a mile and a half, a smart policeman gets back in his car. There are so many new guys that get on and talk shit about all the fat old timers that need to retire cause they can't pass the POWER test. Who gives a shit? I've worked with old timers that couldn't run half a block, but they never had to. They always caught shithead and they did it without running because they knew where to look and with a little finess, dude came to them. It doesn't matter anyway, at will employees or not, you fire recruits that early on for 1 test they will sue and be back in the academy in the next few classes. They will argue that plenty of people in the past were given 2 sometimes 3 chances to pass the POWER test again. That's how it was when I went through the academy. Why should it be different from them?

There is a case going on right now that involves 900 properties.

Thank you sister, for expressing what many of the females on this department are about.
Many men on this job don't realize that we can de-escalate a situation simply by our presence. I've prevented many knock-down, drag-out fights just by playing the offender.
For those of you who will say an offender will view our presence as weakness, I agree with the poster. Altough we are not as quick to resort to fighting, once we are pushed to that point, we are like lions on an antelope.
Hopefully, most of you married guys know that already--and for those of you who aren't, you've been warned!

They taught 8th grade English to recruits when I was there, that's how dumb some of them were. Can you guess which ones? If you said CPS grads you would be correct.
We were handed spelling lists and simple grammar booklets. I couldn't believe what I was being "taught." I graduated from a 4 year University and here I was, in the police academy of one of the largest cities in America being given stuff that was laughable even by 8th grade standards. At least 8th grade as taught by Sister Mary Catherine in my Catholic school.

The story as told is not true. Here is what actually happened: JFed showed up and the class of recruits was assembled at attention. When they introduced Jody as the Superintendent, four of them couldn't stop laughing and THAT'S why they were fired!

I use my brains 100% of the time.
And I had to run up those same damn stairs in Cabrini, Ida B. Wells and the rest of those hell-holes that the firefighters had to maybe to save another coppers ass.
When I went to the academy, they told us you have to be able to fight full out for 10-15 minutes because that is how long it may take for help to get to you. This was in the days before TASERs, ASPs, OC spray, and video cameras everywhere. But we did have Kel-Lights, standup bosses and No RICHARD M. DALEY.
Stay safe, try to make it to retirement with your mind and body intact.
It's one thing to observe bullshit.
It's another thing to promote, encourage, applaud, approve, exploit, and rejoice in bullshit.
Those who observe, relate, and specify the bullshit are merely stating the facts.

Ernst & Young will not be needed for promotion to Lieutenant exams, there will not be any.
J-Fed (really Shortshanks) wants to make the promotion to Lieutenant part of Senior Executive Service. In other words, no exam (they figure you made sergeant so you know all you need to know), nothing except to submit a 7 page fill in the form resume. It will be all clout, just like the Captains.
Just like they did with the Captains years ago, the city will offer the few Lieutenants left a big signing bonus for signing a contract that will give away all rights away to all FUTURE Lieutenants.
Look at that Captains list now, a couple of intelligent good people, the rest are all clout hacks. How many have been "Meritorious Sergeant" AND "Meritorious Lieutenant".
