I can't see them making quite that many with the current budget situation. I'd look for more like 20 to 28, and I think that estimate (28) is on the high side.

No, they are doing a comprehensive study of P.O.'s from recruit to 20 years on the job. They are trying to cover every aspect of an officer's life both on and off duty. It's a 20 year study. You can put that rumor to bed now.

OT: I just saw on the 10 o'clock news that J-Fed fired 4 recruits who had started the academy 4 days ago because he was unimpressed with their performance during gym. I know some people will say that we don't need out of shape recruits. But remember, these men or women gave up jobs and made sacrifices to start the academy.
We all remember someone that was huffing and puffing during "Welcome to the Gym", worked hard and came out OK. I have no personal knowledge about these recruits. I am just a little concerned about how arbitrarily J-Fed fires people.
It was the 4th day. Give them a chance. Especially when we are so short on the street. Not enough situps? I can't remember the last time I called time out while wrestling an offender to squeeze out a couple crunches. But then again, we have to make sure everyone knows Jody means business. What a stroke!
For him to walk in and get rid of people undermines the academy purpose. The academy's role is to instill teamwork in our recruits. What good will this do? Recruits will leave the academy scared of their own shadows. Looking to give up anyone but themselves to save their job.

Hey stupid, these four recruits failed their power test. A pathetic test that any new recruit should be able to pass without exception...especially if they had come this far in the selection process, already passed the test at least once, and had MONTHS to maintain a MINIMUM level of physical fitness. They are NEW and have yet to prove themselves. WE don't need anymore half-assing slackers so early on in their careers. WE have plenty of them, already...and they are not all new.

cpd is in bad shape, really bad shape, from leadership (none), to equipment (bad), to staffing (shorthanded), to morale (almost non-existent)...almost everyone within the cpd knows it, almost none of the exempts will admit it (at least publicly, for fear of retribution (which speaks volumes about their character and integrity, or lack of same), much of the public either doesn't know of it or doesn't care, and most of the local media is afraid to report on it, for fear of angering da mare....it's the Chicago way..

If so then I agree, they just got passed it 3 weeks ago to get in, I heard they even called the recruits a week before to remind them of the POWER test the first week. No excuse fo that....BUT if he fired them just because he didn't like their performance AND they passed the required POWER, then screw him!

Second, most P.O.s dont understand how short the department is on LT's. It was about 40 short, but now promote another 10-12 Capt's and you are now 50+ short... Budget calls for 276..thats almost 20% shortage.. It's like being short 1500-1700 P.O.'s ... Now, do you see what I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong, they need to make promotions and hire at all ranks/ grades. But they have been realy taking advantage of the Lt's in the depatment the last 2 years.

That test is fucking retarded. It doesn't mean shit out in the street. It's also totally unfair and biased since it's "requirements" are different across the board based on age and gender. Some 90 lb female has to bench press 45 lbs compared to some 200 lb man having to bench press 196 lbs... yeah that's a legitmate test. Get the fuck out of here with that bullshit. When it comes time to wrestle down pookie who just got out of prison for the 4th time in his life, who would you rather have with you? The 90lb female that passed her power test or the 200lb male that failed it because he could only bench 190 lbs instead of 196? Maybe you'd like to have J-Fed next to you. I'm sure he'd prove to be very useful.
Maybe with this type of news leaking out to the public, people will just quit applying for this job altogether. I mean really, would you apply for this job in this current climate knowing that J-Fed might have watched pumping iron last night and be looking to fire some recruits today because they missed a sit-up.

The 2004 test was originally scheduled to replace only 55 people scheduled to retire. As of this date five classes have been made exceeding the 55 after the third class. There was talk of a new test that never materialized and this year has the unit expecting retirements of about 10-12 persons from both north and south. The previous two classes were of 12. Traditionally the classes are called in before the summer, if you are not called by the end of June I would not expect a class this year. We have heard a class is scheduled for 2009.

Even with only about 100 taken off the Sgts. list, it has been up 3 years. Don't think they'll get much past 300 before announcing a new test. I feel many will get slighted again just like last time when it stopped at about 382.
Rumor: Shortshanks wants to get the Lieutenants to do what he got the Captains to do a few years ago.
For a few thousand dollars each in signing bonus, they would make the rank of Lieutenant part of Senior Executive Service.
In other words, sign all rights away for all FUTURE Lieutenants AND Sergeants who would be applying for Lieutenant. No more exam, just a clout/sham resume submitted like the Captain's process. The city would be able to demote, or to move and transfer Lieutenants at will. The malevolent midget will get his way, for a few dollars all new Lieutenants will have to be loyal to Shortshanks and his evil empire.
All the labor rights won over the decades will probably never come back.

That is a great question. I though all officers promoted had to take a power test? Does anyone really think that a person being meritoriously promoted would be denied that promotion, or if they had open C.R. #'s that they would be denied promotion. Get real.

Nope-and they shouldn't have to. most older cops- who were around when we could chase bad guys- have been in enough car crash and fights that they might not be flexible enough to pass the sit and reach test. Should the department pass over someone with 20 years of experience for some three year wonder college boy whose yoga classes keep him limber? I don't think so. My supervisor does not need to run- they neede to guide me when I catch the asshole so I don't put my ass in a sling.
You have a Union that has protected you from such nonsense-sure I'd like to see people in better shape-and gyms in the new stations are a step frward to that. Let's do more yo make it attractive to be in shape. If you tied being in shape to being able to move out of the city- watch how fast we get in shape!

A million thanks for that dose of reality. I work in one of the aforementioned "ranger" districts. I get so damned tired of these blowhard mfrs patting themselves on the back for no other reason than where they're assigned. Last yera, Officer Richard Francis (God rest his soul) lost his life, working midnights in 019. So, was he any less of a copper than some dog-ass in a quote "ranger" district? I think not! Anyone who knew him will tell you he was a copper's copper. He didn't need some fake assed, made up ranger designation. Usually, it's a dog-ass vet or some 2 year wonder claiming their rangerness. Good coppers and dog-asses are in every district and every unit. The sooner that bullshit "ranger" mentality fades away, the better!

Not sure of the post either and what the hell the original poster wanted to convey.
I know this much, my friend is a SGt in 189, and he said this team is killing them with numbers. They do 2 or 3 warrants a day almost 5 days a week.
I guess there are 10 of them on the team but only 4 of them are doing any of the work. I do know that two of the guys have just got 2 years on, that they lie about how long they have, and that one of the two is the relative of a big boss.
Not sure what the original post is about b/c this is standard all over the city and all over in units. Maybe half of the people there work — that is not a news flash. Same on patrol, 25 percent do the work and the other 75 hide like dogs.
