It's an Animal

And now the Fire Department is going to take a beating over a coyote drowning:
  • An aborted water rescue of a wild coyote today left animal advocates furious with Chicago rescue crews.

After responding to an emergency call about 11 a.m., a fire department scuba team saw a figure moving on an ice-covered Lake Michigan, said Cmdr. Ron Dorneker.

As a department helicopter hovered above the animal, the ice broke and the coyote fell into the frigid waters about a half-mile from the shore.

David Holingue, who stopped to watch the commotion during his daily walk along the lakefront path near Fullerton Parkway, expected the divers to save the coyote. He was stunned when authorities called off the rescue.

It's a wild dog. We don't think it's even endangered in Illinois anymore. Lord knows we see a ton of them running around the neighborhood. However, city owned helicopters and dive qualified firefighters are at a premium and ought to be used to rescue human lives.

But thanks for making everyone forget about the cougar.

the two most dangerous dives for a diver are a river dive and an ice dive. no way in hell should anyone attempt an ice dive to attempt to save a wild dog... if it was a cougar drowning then i could see a diver going in for that! the fire department mad a great call by not putting there people under the ice to save the dog.. hope pita doesnt burn down another one of daleys lake houses!

First the cougar and now this. It is absolutely crazy how these animal lovers act. The way they carried on about that cougar being shot was absolutely insane. The same thing with this animal; the news will keep this up for weeks.
If they love animals so much, why didn't those roscoe village idiots take care of the thing themselves instead of calling the police? If those idiots cared so much for this one, why didn't they jump in the water and save him themselves?
Makes one wonder what else is important to pea-brain people like them. On second thought, no, whatever it is, I don't want to know.

Coyotes kill and eat domestic animals such as cats and dogs. They are a danger to the community. They also have attacked small children and adults. There should be a shoot on site order for theses pests!
A helicopter or a trained dive rescue officer is worth more than than this canine garbage running around! Flight officers (not CPD cause it never flys) and divers have families and loved ones.
So if it was rescued it would have been taken to animal cruelty and destroyed. Easier and cheaper to let nature do it's course!!!
I'd volunteer to shoot it but the dept. already owes me 4 45 rounds that they don't have to replace my ammo used in extermination!!!!

David Holingue, you are an idiot. Get your head out of your backside and if you want to do something, get worried about the dozen or so dogs killed everyday in Chicago by street gangs training them or using them as bait in training for dog fighting.
Not advocating animal cruelty here at all, let's talk this one through.
Diver jumps in, its risky at anytime, but in the ice, shhheeeet, then gets fuzzy coyote in his arms for a rescue, ummm, think that cute little vacinated dog you feed kibble to is the same creature ? So let's say coyote's natural instinct of self preservation doesn't kick in, or better yet is overridden by logic and coyote let's fire diver carry him to safety, what then ? Now where is safety, (I am not sure how CFD does it) but let's say they get him on a fireboat or back in the chopper, ow yeh, the rescure is over with then, I'd never fly in a helo with a fricking coyote, just a personal problem I have, then they let him go, say right there in Lincoln Park, ow yeh, that will work, the next ten years go by and some little dashcund becomes coyote food,,,jesus,,,these idiots just piss me off. Horrible thing to see an animal in distress, worse to overreact and risk lives to save them.

I live in an area where it sometimes seems as if they are EVERYWHERE! They hate train whistles, and when one passes, the volume of their howling is unbelievable! For the most part, they are very shy, and you rarely see them. It is true however, they will grab a family pet if possible. Lost count of how many cats have mysteriously disappeared!

As much of a nuisance as they seem, though, they do definitely have an important place in our ecosystem, rodent control, for one. They help keep the balance.

Woodstock, IL A coyote jumped over a silt fence and snapped at 8-year-old Brandon Schaefer’s hand when he was walking home from school last month, his mother said.
The bite left two puncture wounds, and the boy received five rounds of rabies shots, which left him feverish and vomiting. Brandon received his last shot Wednesday afternoon.
“If they’re going to attack my 8-year-old, they’re going to attack a 5-year-old,” his mother, Jenny Schaefer said, adding that the next attack might be more serious.

I've taken the liberty of adjusting the layout of your satirical comment, just in case these handicapped quasi readers might like a second chance at appreciating your keen, and, perhaps, a bit too, for them, cryptic humor:

And being that our fire fighters living the good life cruising the city 1000 feet above mostly have NOTHING to do, why not save this creature?

No one's life would be at stake, as they are trained to go into the water.

Between the Official Bird Rescue Ladies headquartered at the former Meigs Field -- the nuts with the flashing yellow light on their car -- and the, shall we say, other beefy women muscling around in kayaks with the obligatory border collies (the taxpayers actually give them money to frighten seagulls away) there should have been enough Animal Rights genderpower down there by the lakefront to save ol' Wiley.

Who was that crazy Jewish woman who used to run "Animal Control" -- Halpern or Halperin or something. Where was she with a beef-flavored canine life preserver, huh? We're slippin' here.

You know the same dog owner would be calling 911 about his beloved pet being in peril at the sight of Wiley Coyote running around in public.
I'm not happy the beast died by drowning
but mother nature's rules still apply here. Only the strong survive to procreate a healthy offspring.
That being said, the fire dept made a sound judgement call. It's honorable to give one's life to save another soul. But to have died to save a dog? To chance not going home to your family, risking injury that could leave you disabled ? Totally against the rules of nature.

don't you ever compare a born and raised northside chicagoan to these suburban liberal transplant pukes. these fucks are not from here, they move here. for the record the 41st ward (far n.w. side norwood, edison, oriole park neighborhoods etc.) is the only republican ward in the city. that's like saying southsiders are like the trailer trash from the south suburbs and indiana (no matter how close you guys are in comparison).

Fireman #1 "What do we do with him once he gets in the chopper, won't he go nuts?"

Fireman #2 "Probably, he is a wild animal."

Fireman #1 "Screw this, lets go back to the house and lift and make spaghetti and play Xbox."

Fireman #2 "Sweet."

Are you serious?? I mean really, are you SERIOUS??? Please tell me your joking and please PLEASE tell me you are not a cop. You would be the one who hesitates when it's trigger time. God help your partner if you work with one.

To rescue a coyote from ice , its done with a boat and a snare, not by risking the lives of the crew on the helicopter ! The snarling, snapping critter is held in one end of the boat by the snare to avoid injuring the rescuers...most of the coyotes limp due to being hit by cars, and the ones acting sluggish and disoriented are likely
infected with K9 distemper virus. They are not afraid of humans or dogs, leading to some being shot locally. I carry OC and a stimger light when walking the dog, as i prefer to not shoot dumb animals when ever possible...they are not afraid of the light anymore...

The coyote's family will now sue the City and the ACME rubber raft company. News crews were unable to reach the Roadrunner for comments.

If you mean 'hesitates' if confronted by a coyote, perhaps you have a point.

If, however, your 'hesitates when it's trigger time' refers to the other living creatures mentioned in the comment you've quoted, may I suggest that you read said comment again?

My heart aches for the coyote. I hope Mr. Holingue never finds out that coyotes are hunted and trapped to the tune of about 7,000 per year in Illinois because they're furbearing varmints. In fact, coyotes are one of the few game animals in Illinois that can be taken legally with a centerfire rifle.

This reminds me of the Chicago dingbat a few years ago who wrote a letter to the Tribune when Wisconsin was thinking about adding a dove season. She would never, she sniffed in print, ever visit a state or spend her money in a state that would be so barbaric as to allow rednecks to hunt defenseless symbols of peace like doves.

Of course, she was from Chicago . . . and Chicago is in Illinois . . . and Illinois has had a thriving dove season for as long as I can remember.

I doubt the thing drowned anyway.

In 023 on monday a man had a heart attack and had to wait because the ambulance was down on a drunk who was sleeping in the cold, city resourses waisted on a bum who wanted to get drunk instead of a tax payer. The yuppie who called has no idea about the big picture, just lets feel good now.

3/04/2009 09:34:00 AM

Very common!! Especially in yuppie-ville and a very frustrating part of a medic's job. Not enough ambulances in the city, they call us to get the bums off the l train too..................

True story:
We had an ambulance call in Lincoln park for "fell out the window and landed in the pool" we found a LARGE crowd huddled around-when we broke through the crowd we found that we were called to the scene for a DOG!! They were absolutely shocked when I told them we could not transport the animal in our ambulance! Told them I would loose my job(the dog was okay)-can't stand working in that neighborhood dealing with those clueless yuppies. Told the bosses to send me back to 40th and Dearborne and called the dispatcher and we laughed!
