Kind of a Stretch

A very liberal interpretation of what we pointed out by NBC News tonight:
We didn't blame the cameras per se, but rather the misguided spending and reliance on cameras to deter crime instead of actual officers who can stop suspicious people, frisk them and arrest them if need be.

NBC links to the blog by name and more importantly, links to the New Orleans report that pointed out Mayor Daley telling Mayor Nagin that Chicago was going to go into cameras in a big way as a way to "cheap" out policing.

And here's a telling statement in the NBC report from the Department:
  • NBC Chicago contacted the Police Department to get their take on Second City Cop's suggestion that more cameras means less officers on the street. They replied:

"The Chicago Police Department has been a leader among police departments in the innovative use of technology, including cameras. Chicago’s camera network – consisting of thousands of cameras integrated throughout the City – is the most integrated network in the country. Our system was created to supplement the work of our first responders and the cameras are an invaluable tool for our officers to use in their work to serve and protect the residents of the City of Chicago."

Did anyone see anything in the above paragraph that looks even remotely like an answer to NBC's question? Anyone? Bueller?

You won't find an answer in that statement because there isn't an answer in that statement. Not one hard number to be found. Meanwhile, most districts down two to four beat cars a night, the second wagon hasn't moved in months, rapid response cars are a fantasy and the last guy who remembered what a Mission Car was retired last Christmas.

One day perhaps we can all watch crime as it occurs in real time from the comfort of our homes. And then later blog about it and share our experiences with others. I think Da Mayor is on to something..................

chicago is the murder capitol of the country right now
AND
besides the theft from the salvation army cup, name another time one of these camera's has done anything! Never!
So how can they say that having these things is making and difference or is better than actually having a real police officer available to respond to real situations.

This might finally get the message across! Please listen up Chicago, there are a plethora of shootings under these cameras monthly! A random face in a white tee and blue jeans w/ no witness' is not an offender! That's why crimes don't get solved. Look at the high level of police involved shootings, the ridicules amount of homicides in this town! These jag-offs don't register or legally obtain there guns, show me one gun crime committed by a legally obtained and registered gun. Good luck. It's time to get pissed off Chicago, stop being told how to feel. Demand more police! We pay for it, don't we. Taxes go up and service goes down?

Good place to pilot a disastrous work schedule. You all should have piloted it in 011, 015, 010 and not just rapids....the whole damn district. Just to see how it goes!

"Liberal interpretation?" This sounds like the typical twisting of words that are pumped out of City Hall, exactly the way all truths are distorted by the 5th Floor.

You say that the cameras are ineffective, costly and undermonitored. You say the program is mismanaged, that too much emphasis is placed on untested technology and somehow the statement means that you say the cameras "blame crime cameras for CPS murders."

While my first instinct is to say that this is a typical job by the mayoral spin doctors, I have to say that at least I'm grateful they're quoting you, accurately or not. Look at the last 2 weeks alone: more silence from the FOP.

Jody caves in and issues the list of officers requested by Flint Taylor. Not a peep out of Lodge 7.

You are rapidly becoming the ex-officio spokesperson of the working men and women of the CPD.

It's about time SOMEONE spoke up for us.

Another shout-out to our blue brother, Larry "19th Precinct", NYPD, about the NOLA Nagin-Daley exchange on these bullshit cameras.

While Larry had previous assignments, the 19th Pct. has to be the most affluent police dist./pct. in the nation--"The Millionaires' Ghetto" on the Upper East Side, east of Central Park.

Have you been eating South African rock lobstertail, Beluga caviar and truffles "on the arm" for lunch, Larry? Wash it down with some chilled Dom Perignon.

If your info generates a shitstorm here, you certainly deserve it. Now "go in the coop" with your espresso, my brother.

It says it right there. The cameras were created to supplement the work of the first responding officers. That's fantastic. Then the people working the cameras can be the preliminary investigator, pan over to the hospital to give the status on the victim and complete the paperwork. All from the comforts of a little cubical. Technology is great!

My comment on the NBC message board:

"I noticed that somehow 508 CPS students shot has turned into 508 CPS students murdered. And has anyone yet requested the manpower numbers as SCC suggested to prove him wrong? Has anyone bothered to ask what was learned from the two CPD cameras that were in plain view of a triple homicide two weeks ago?"

The Chicago Police Department is down THOUSANDS of Officers. This is a safety issue for 'first responders' as well as the citizens we have sworn to protect.

Cameras cannot replace Officers. They are a tool, and nothing more.

And that's because, as we all know, the Media aint shit these days. They're just a mouthpiece for The Machine and all Liberals. And they seek to exploit all negative police related headlines, and distort the ones that are clearly not.

SCC, like I said before, if I want to get the scoop on what is going on in the streets, I check here. The days of flipping on the news and getting an accurate account of the facts are long gone. Investigative reporting is a thing of the past, its almost like the media is afraid of pissing off the people they question, so they just walk away from the conflict, print/repeat what was said and no harm no foul, no accountability.
Because if they did what you had mentioned, they would then have a clue that maybe the manpower is way down, just like mentioned here. That the cameras are only out there as a half ass deterrent, much like the store that has a sign up saying your being monitored by camera, which many are just phony cameras.

Here is a challenge, how many on-view crimes have been caught on this camera system?
Then have a role call, how many of these camera housings out in the neighborhoods actually have cameras in them?
Now compare that to what the average rookie does on his first year of being cut loose on his own?
There’s some investigative reporting.

If they had bought decent cameras, they might well make a difference. But the blurry images from typical cameras is not exactly something that is likely to ID anyone.

There are good cameras available for not a whole lot more money. And they can be run over an Ethernet network, so wiring them is fairly cheap.

The resolution is very high, and best of all, the image is not interlaced so photos taken from it are very sharp.

Just about ideal for this kind of thing.

MANPOWER NUMBERS ARE A BLATANT LIE!

THE NUMBERS COUNT CLOUT HACK ON SO CALLED LEAVES OF ABSENCE LIKE SENATOR TONY MUNOZ AND FAST EDDIE ACEVEDO

IT COUNT GUYS DETAILED OUT FOREVER TO THE FBI AND OTHER ODD UNITS LIKE ALDERMAN BURKES DRIVERS.

IT COUNT GUYS ON SICK LEAVE THAT R LIKELY TO NEVER RETURN.

IT COUNTS CITY WORKER THAT JUST BECAME THE POLICE AS A BACK UP AND THEN TAKE A LEAVE OF ABSENSE LIKE HDO AARON DELVALLE (AL SANCHEZ BAG BOY).

IT COUNTS ALL THE LIMITED DUTY BOYS AND GIRLS THAT CAN NEVER WORK OUTSIDE OR COUNTED ON TO ASSIST IN ANY MAJOR INCIDENT.

IT COUNT OFFICER THAT ARE STRIPPED
OF POLICE POWER AND LEFT TO LANGISH AT 311 FOR 2 -7 YEARS.

SO IF THE MEDIA DOES WHANT TO INVESTIGATE MAKE SURE U ASK 4 THE RIGHT NUMBERS!

Will they teach you how to type one handed? With each hand, depending on what side of the car you are sitting on? Will the officer take the computer out every time they write something up? Imagine what the docking modules will look like after a month of going in/out of the car. So then there will be an order, stating the computer stays in the car and what happens then?

Who has a working PDT? And if you have one, how often does it work?

The new Toughbooks are down more than they are up. The old Microslates (still running on Windows 98) can't handle anything more than running plates and sending car to car messages finding out where lunch will be at.

23 years ago, we were told in the Academy that we'd do all our reports on computer within 3 years.

I wouldn't throw away your Posse box and ball point pens just yet.

As far as cpd being leaders in technology it took me three squad cars before I found one that had working sirens, windshield wipers or one that had doors that would properly close. Technology? I can't even get the basics from cpd. As far as AIRA is concerned I don't think it's that bad but please let me be able to remove the fucking pdt from the car so I don't have to type with one hand or hold myself down at the station for some fuck'n mutts bullshit domestic battery report just so it's eaiser to do. Now cut it out boys. These cameras work wonders.

Just last week I was on a POD mission and witnessed fly dumping in progress.
A big stray dog took a wicked dump on some good citizens yard.

I initiated a Plan 2, and called in air support. After a systematic search of the area, the dog was not located. The four footed felon made good his escape.

Fliers with the wanted subject have been circulated through out the area. We are confident an arrest is immanent.

So how do all of you nay-sayers like them apples.

technology will NEVER replace old fashion police work. A nameless face wearing all dark clothing will never be found by a camera. You want to reduce homicides on the streets of Chicago, cars have to be stopped, pedestrians have to be stopped, weapons have to be found and offenders have to be arrested. Cameras cant do that. The mayor and the media need to take their foot off the working coppers neck. Takes nothing more than probable cause to stop cars and pedestrians and search. You wont get credit for stopping murders because they wont happen as often and most of the time you wont know that you prevented it. Removing weapon from the assholes homes, person and vehicles will do a lot to prevent shit from happening. they can hang the abatte's and the pac man's all they want and most of us would say God bless them for it but take your fucking foot off the working coppers!

SCC, I just want to get the word out. Sunday is the Southside Irish Parade. Oak Lawn and the Ill State Police will have a DUI checkpoint on 111th st between Pulaski and Cicero. The surrounding Suburbs (Evergreen Park, Alsip, Blue Island, and Oak Lawn will have approximately 50 to 70 Ill State Police working DUI enforcement in the area. At least ten Troopers assigned to each suburb, plus the checkpoint. As we know many Officers and their families go to this event and indulge in a "POP" or two. People need to keep in mind that with the new changes in DUI laws, a refusal to blow is an automatic one year suspension. For the Police that means no-pay status for that year. This info is not being given out to help anyone who decides to drink and drive avoid a DUI, but rather in hope of preventing a big mess for themselves, their family and the department. Please leave the car at home and avoid being Mondays headline news.

Breaking News.......

Political connections discussed at Sanchez corruption trial

Denise Alcantar had applied for jobs at the city without success -- until she filled out an application to become a city truck driver at a meeting of the Hispanic Democratic Organization.

In a bright orange city sweatshirt, Alcantar, who is paid about $62,700 a year as a recycling truck driver, described how she first learned about public job openings from teammates at a softball league in Harrison Park.

Encouraged by the city workers and police officers on her team, Alcantar began to work for HDO, registering Hispanic voters and helping Chicago politicians, including state Sen. Martin Sandoval, state Rep. Edward Acevedo and Alds. George Cardenas (12th) and Danny Solis (25th).

What CPD members do you think she was referring too??

Exactly. It's useless unless you have someone waiting around the corner to grab the guy.
The Chicago magazine article has some quotes from Weis touting the values of these cameras. I didn't read the whole article but it wasn't anything really earthshaking, pretty much the same bs from City Hall. At the end the writer adds some stuff about citizens complaining at a CAPS meeting about not enough police in the neighborhood.

The cameras are worth more to Shortshanks than we are. Let the cameras make the arrests and do the stops. No contract for almost 2 years and nothing in sight that it we will get one anytime soon. I quit. Come in, handle what I have to do and go home safe to my family. Fuck Shortshanks and the department. With our bosses you are under a microscope if you try to do any proactive policing. Come on retirement. If another copper needs help, I'm going, but other than that screw it. Hand wavers, wave back. Blinders on. All good. The cameras will do the work. Bet you Shortshanks bodyguards don't stop if they see a crime in progress.

The cameras are worthless. When they were rirst install it was at a lower height. But the damn cameras kept getting fucked up by the shitheads in the hood. So they moved the cmeras to higher locations. One problem. Now they are worthless. They can't zoom in and the field of view is greatly decreased. Basically they are worthless pieces of shit. That's why you can't get any video from them. Catch 22. To work they are subject to vandalism. To keep them from being vandalized, they are worthless as a tool. But just keep spending money on them. Try to get a copy of the video. It's easier to hit the lottery.

With the new modern system you now will do case reports on your PDT. The academy will offer typing classes along with a typing test by December. All will be required to pass these tests.

3/11/2009 08:04:00 AM

You mean if I can't type worth a shit, which I can't, and don't pass the test I don't have to type up any more of my reports. Maybe they will get me a typist to do my reports. WOO HOO.

Sure we are number 1 in technology, but technology from what century. When I attended a police officer's funeral I was looking at the state police and surban vehicles. Lastest computers in their cars, most had Lojack locators in them. Then when they opened the trunks, mounted shotguns and rifles, large first -aid kits, fire extinguishers and all the equipment needed to work the street in any situation. Our cars come equipped with 20 pounds of garbage in every car. In the trunk is a spare tire and hopefully it's not flat. If you actually have a jack and lug wrench, that are for that car, you have a top of the line car. You go Shortshanks. If your car is downed for service, then there is a 80 or 90 percent chance there are no pool cars. We are number 1 in technology. I don't think so. we are nuber one in crooked politicians and bosses who don't know their ass from a hole in the wall about the job, but not in technology. They should equip us half as much as they do the Fire department with needed equipment. Just look at how long it took them to do the trials with the striker fired pistols. They said 6 months. It took about 4 years or more in acuality. Plus why do they have to do trial testing on what shoes or boots we can wear. That was a joke. Years ago they were doing a test with installing fire extinguishers in some cars. What ever happened to that. So if you ever pull up to a car on fire, with or without an occupant, unless you really have to piss, you stand there with your thumb up your ass until CFD shows up. Number 1 in technology. Only if we were being compared with Mayberry. But then again, Mayberry is more equipped than us too.

Think of watching a live version of the show COPS,you can watch your neighbors get robbed and raped live on The Mayors Pay per view crime cameras channel. All for $19.95 per month. This would make more money that red light cameras.

Oh but there is a 2nd wagon in 020 because of the stupid 10 hour days. Midnights is WAAAAAY short. If 020 was not Mayberry, then bad stuff might happen. Good place to pilot a disastrous work schedule. You all should have piloted it in 011, 015, 010 and not just rapids....the whole damn district. Just to see how it goes!

NBC: get off your lazy asses and hit the streets for your stories. put ONE OF YOUR CAMERAS to use. park under one of the PODS and stay there during the night for a few nights. THEN report on how useful the cameras are. by the way make sure you drive around the corners to see what is happening. trying doing this w/o a call to Shortshanks for his approval. you have the stones to do that?? we do it every night. check your sources first hand instead of copying from here. then and only then you may be called the news.
stay safe out there

If they had bought decent cameras, they might well make a difference. But the blurry images from typical cameras is not exactly something that is likely to ID anyone.

There are good cameras available for not a whole lot more money. And they can be run over an Ethernet network, so wiring them is fairly cheap.

The resolution is very high, and best of all, the image is not interlaced so photos taken from it are very sharp.

Just about ideal for this kind of thing.

Daley says that it's the United States fault that the Mexicans are killing each other by the thousands. I also hear that the 2nd Mountain Div. has been sent to Phonex AZ because of the problems with all the abductions. The news is not saying much about this. This could be a very intersting summer.

Huberman @ Cpd Birth of Pods from
RMS.
Followed by more cameras from Huberman @ OEMC. Followed by more cameras from Huberman @ CTA. Followed by more cameras to come, from Huberman @ CPS. There are accomplices in Lewin bringing in AirVisual.
There are more pigs at the trough that are all part of Hubeman's master plan to video the whole city.He has sold short shanks on this pencil necked idea of his and has been put in place, to carry out the plan, by spending more and raising fees and taxes. Today it was announced the schools are going to ask for more property tax increases and the CTA is looking for more taxes and higher fares. Surprise...NOT.
Everywhere Huberman has been has resulted in lost jobs, higher costs, increased taxes and all for some concept that has not produced any of the advertised results. There are numerous articles produced by master spin masters that have tried to sway public opinion. It's time to stop. There's a start for one of you news guys, have at it.

Blue light cameras have replaced currency exchanges for people evaluating the safety of a neighborhood. Meaning, the more flashing cameras, the less you want to rent/buy there.

3/11/2009 02:12:00 PM

Very true, I don't want to see one stinking camera where I live. I also don't want any of those speed humps either.
As for the cameras use, I have used it to good effect on occasion but they are a pain in the rear. Blurry, hard to adjust, some of them seem to have a mind of their own even when you know you are the only one controlling it. I use the camera's to catch the dope dealers but they do adapt to them. They hawk their business right in front of them but do the deal just around the corner where you can't see so it's kind of useless. It reminds me of when everyone wanted a col de sac on their block to stop all the traffic but made perfect drug tips because the only cars they blocked were ours. We need troops, not gadgets.

We have used the cameras successfully many times, one guy stays in and watches and calls things in to us on our cells and we pick them off. The problem is nobody has the patience to sit and watch for a while. If someone is using these cameras for cigarette selling they are pathetic, these mutts don't think they work or are monitored and will do things right in front of them...

Not a peep out of Lodge 7.

You are rapidly becoming the ex-officio spokesperson of the working men and women of the CPD.

It's about time SOMEONE spoke up for us.

3/11/2009 01:09:00 AM

you WANT results?
GET RID OF THE FOP
VOTE THEM OUT(make sure there is a Union ready when you do)
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?????
NOTHING BUT TAKE YOUR MONEY and give you NOTHING in return.

What you NEED is a Strong voice that has beenin the streets, seen and done and been screwed just as hard as the rest of the Working Police in Chicago. You need someone that gets just as disgusted at the wastes of Badges they routinely hide behind desks, secretary posts, Radio Room Posts, ect.
It is TIME Brothers and Sisters to rise up from this vile mess and break free from the chains the FOP has had on us for FAR TOO LONG.They will NOT fight for you, they will NOT "have your back",They will forget all about you before the ground settles around your gravesite,They ONLY worry about what THEY get for themselves and to hell with us. Not to sound like the Moron running this country but ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE.

Thank you and God Bless

SAD

3/11/2009 01:44:00 PM

HEY DAMMIT!!!! The "loosey Mission" was supposed to be a COVERT TACTICAL MISSION. WE planned this for MONTHS and strategized how we were going to address this grievous crime against humanity.Hell even "air One" helped out along with the CTA Special Missions Team. We issued MORE anov's that period than ANY OTHER UNIT! We even got a pat on the back from the DC for this "fine effort at police work" Dont hate. WE KEEP THOSE DAMN CIGARETTES WHERE THEY BELONG! On the Shelves being sold and taxed 4 times over so the State doesnt go broke. But NOOOOOO you had to go and run your mouth about what was SUPPPOSED TO BE a Secret covert Mission. Thanks ass plug. You blew all my overtime for the month.
