Evergreen Park Says "No"

  • Chicago's South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade is still looking for a home.

After organizers decided that it would no longer hold the parade that had grown too large for the neighborhood, neighboring Evergreen Park was considering taking over as host.

But Mayor James Sexton says a survey showed residents were split 50-50 on taking on the parade so officials decided to drop the matter.

Skip it next year and see if anyone misses it. Give the parade committee a chance to start a new tradition more suited to the neighborhood. Then see what 2011 brings.

Let's have the parade on King from 39th to 51st with an afterset in Washington Park. That used to be a hell of an Irish neighborhood. Read the Studs Lonigan books by James T. Farrell.

I've only gone a few times and haven't gone since I was a kid. It stunk back then and it only got worse. However, being that it was a nice function at one time...

I would like to thank all of you twenty-something-can't hold my liquor-jaggoffs who turned the parade into some college frat party, just like you act in every bar you are in. Put your hat on straight, put the beer down and act like a fucking adult.

I think Douglas Blvd would be perfect, loads of gang ways to urinate in and you can litter everywhere and no one will notice.

Smart choice, Mayor Sexton! One can only scratch their head in wonder as to why your small but solidly middle-class suburb would consider even for a minute inviting the multitudes of alcoholics into your community, if only for one day. It would have undoubtedly cost you dearly in your next election.

Anyone who worked the parade knows it got way to big for a neighborhood venue. Everyone I spoke with in the neighborhood agreed with the decision to end it. I agree, give it a rest and start a new, more family oriented celebration. I think it was a mature and responsible decision on the part of the committee and probably not an easy one to make.

I say move it out to south, south suburbs. This way they can save on train fare.

No, move it to North Michigan Avenue, starting in Grant Park, on Congress Parkway, head north on Michigan Avenue, circle the Loop, via west on Upper Wacker Drive, then south on LaSalle to Jackson, east back to Michigan Avenue, then south to Congress Parkway and back east to Grant Park, where the festivals would truly begin.

If the route seems too short, just repeatedly circle the Loop until shortshanks screams "No Mas!!!".

After all, we've got an Irish Leprechaun Midget King, why not celebrate his benevolent reign in the very heart of his kingdom?

That would be an appropriate tribute to mayor stinky.

They are talking about a festival in the park, fenced off, and charge for admission. Supposedly looking at Beverly, Kennedy, and Ridge Park

Definitely a good decision to not hold the parade in EP. I don't think a police force the size of Evergreen's could handle it. Having said that, EP would be great place to live. There's a lot of good families, nice homes, and the village actually plows their streets in the winter!

The evergreen park is a con man.

He never intended to hold the St Pat's parade and he himself has stated so to "friends".

He was trying to bolster a dwindling white population in his town that is going the way of the "Evergreen Plaza" shopping mall.

Figure it out. He's grasping at straws. It's time for change!

I'm starting my own parade it will run from 105th and Central Pk. to 115th with drinks at the end with a little corned beef, either way I'm drinking green beer and getting ass hammered the Sunday before St. Paddy's day. Invitation is open to everyone. Bring the kids no drinking till the end.

Hard to believe that a celebration the Irish are involved in turns out to involve a bunch of drunken jagoffs. I'm sure that it's all outsider's.

As a copper and lifelong resident of Beverly, good riddance! It was nothing but a bunch of asshats drinking, puking, pissing and generally fucking up a nice neighborhood.

Lets have the parade in front of the mayor's house. He is all in favor of having international events, to bring people to our wonderful city.
Many of the participants of the South Side Irish Parade are not residents of the city. So lets not only introduce them to the city, but our wonderful mayor.

Gaelic Park has a great fest every Memorial Day weekend. Plenty of food, music, and drinks. Carnival rides for the kids and entertainment for the adults. Admission fee keeps most of trash out

"How many troops did Ireland send to Iraq and Afganistan?"

Alot of Irish serve in British Regiments Bonestroke.
France sent hundreds of Soldiers to Afghanistan since 2003 to replace the US Troops that left for Iraq.
The Eurobashing is misguided @ best.
