- An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a swift firefight that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, U.S. officials said.
U.S. officials said a pirate who had been involved in negotiations to free Phillips but who was not on the lifeboat during the rescue was in military custody. FBI spokesman John Miller said that would change as the situation became "more of a criminal issue than a military issue."
Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said prosecutors were looking at "evidence and other issues" to determine whether to bring a case in the United States. The pirate could face a life sentence if convicted, officials said.
How about an old fashioned hanging from the yardarm? Does the Navy still have yardarms?

Why the hell does a relatively small operation like this need express presidential approval? The military should have standing orders to blow the miserable skinny fucks out of the water on sight, take hostages back at will and sink or disable all vessels used by so called pirates.
This isn't an invasion of a nation, it is a tactical maneuver to save American lives and make fish food out of those who would dare hold for ransom any US flagged ship.
Yes , the Navy still has "yard arms" Which is a boom on a Cargo Ship that is placed over the pier and picks up pallets or other type cargo and lifts them up into the air and the "stay" boom is positioned over the cargo hold that swings the cargo over to the ship and lets it down into the cargo hold . thank you !

Navy did a nice job. However, they should have been watching for any opportunity offered by the Captain. When the Captain went overboard and began to swim away from the dingy the Navy should have opened up with some 20 mm and pulverized the dingy.

I am pleased to learn they still have firearms (and people who can use them). I wonder if they keep those rifles locked up in the commanders office. Also, before hanging this mope from the yardarm or radar mast or whatever, we may consider "flogging around the fleet" for starters.

The Navy should use Predators to locate and destroy any boat carrying more than three persons from Somalia shores. After a week of death from above the problem should go away.

Actually I am pretty sure that the yard is the horizontal spar that sails are hung from, and the yardarm is the outer part of the yard. When the "sun is over the yardarm," late morning in most places, it is time to serve the first ration of grog, or to start drinking.

Did anybody notice that the Navy Seal Team wasn't using the pimpy M-4/M-16 carbines to take out the pirates? These guys use the best weapons, old or new, designs for their missions.

Three shots, simultaneously, from the stern of a ship in rolling waters... AND in the dark! And all three hit their targets!!

it seems like there is a port in somalia that is mostly used by pirates. i say we take the port out. Give them a 30 minute warning and then carpet bomb it.

Why isn't the merchant marine armed? One would think they would tool up to repel boarders as soon as the threat presented itself. They have a right to defend themselves, their cargo and their vessel. These are pirates, not privateers or anything even remotely sanctioned by any government. Kill them all.
I'm surprised Obama did something like this, but I'm willing to bet he still has plausible deniability as he doesn't want to have his record of being a nancy boy smudged in the least bit. It did take him what, like 3 days to do anything? Now they are talking about moving into Somalia for a military offensive? If Bush were still President, he'd give them a taste of how a real President would respond. He would have ordered a Trident submarine to position itself directly under the lifeboat, and then launch an ICBM. Somali Pirates have filed a class action lawsuit against the U.S. Navy for violation of Human Rights, conducting War against civilians, and being denied "freedom of the seas" as it pertains to their occupation. Attorneys representing the consortium of Pirate groups are seeking $100 Billion in damages and have placed an international lien on U.S. Naval bases until all Navy personnel have disclosed their financial assets. They have also petitioned that an independent review authority be established to investigate pirate complaints of excessive force and "ocean profiling" by the World's Navies. A spokesman for the pirates from the recently hired public relations firm of Taylor, Ekl, and Douche, released a statement this morning that: "Pirates are the second oldest profession on Earth. They fulfill a useful and necessary function on the High Seas, that of clearing the sea lanes of all but the most foolhardy of sailors. Finally, when Pirates are outlawed then only outlaws will be Pirates." As of yet there has been no word from the Department of Defense, or the White House, about the lawsuit.

The Crew of the cargo ship was pissed off at Obama. They were calling for help for days. They claim the Navy should have been in place to turn that pirate boat into splinters and a slime slick on the water before they ever got close enough to board.
