A Million?

  • Days after frustrated west side residents filled some potholes on their own, the city of Chicago is pledging more resources against the unwelcome sign of spring on area roads.

Transportation Commissioner Tom Byrne says he's calling back seasonal workers to combat the potholes, beefing up the response to 30 crews assigned to the job.

  • The city 311 center claims the pothole backlog is about 13 thousand, but Byrne said there may be millions.
A million freaking potholes? Don't any of these road building contracts come with guarantees?

But don't worry - "wolfpacks" are on the way!
  • The new strategy involves bringing back seasonal workers early and assigning "wolfpacks" of pothole repair crews to concentrate on streets with the most damage, Byrne said.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will also lend a hand by filling potholes on state-designated routes in Chicago, said Carmen Iacullo, IDOT operations manager in the Chicago area.

City crews have repaired more than 300,000 potholes since December, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation. But the huge backlog -- and anger from drivers over poor road conditions -- calls for extraordinary measures, officials said.

We still want to see the citizen patch job on 4800 Van Buren outlast a city patch.

Make road contractors warranty their work, like they do in other countries.Ontario, Canada: 1-year warranty on all aspects of the project. Germany: warranty periods of 1 to 3 years for pavements.
The Netherlands: 7-year warranty for the surface course of asphaltic concrete pavements. Scotland: contractors are responsible for all defects during a 5-year maintenance period after construction is complete. Scotland considers past performance in determining the list of invited bidders for new road projects, disputes could affect a contractor’s ability to bid on future projects.

Obviously, this would never happen here. Too many idiots (not only Shitcago,Crook Co., and Tollway Authority) rely on bonuses in the form of graft as income. Besides, too many clout-heavy road construction companies would be driven out of business.

Uh huh, but that would be too honest, makes too much economic sense for the taxpayers and, as you point out, would dry up a reliable cash flow for the daley crime families.

After all, who would want to pony up those 'political donations' if there wasn't the effective guarantee of recouping same, and then some, down the line?

How else would they, the 'donators', be assured of being a) the presumably lowest, 'qualified' bidder and b) still assured of ample profits, said profits not to be had, were they to be held accountable for completing their contract at, or below, that 'lowest qualified' bid?

Remember, they're crooks, but, in reality, they're not dumb crooks.

You sound like someone who knows a few things. So, how about the reducers put on the sewers to keep the 'Deep Tunnel' from overflowing. Great idea, except it didn't work at all. It flooded the Northside neighborhoods where they were installed and the City spent how much taking them out, and how many still need to be taken out?

My neighborhood park is still under water and the streets flood anytime there is a little rain. It didn't use to be this way. Millions of the taxpayer's money wasted on some insider contract deal. Millions more paid out by insurance companies to unhappy homeowners. I'm not complaining about accoutability in the C.P.D., but there is none anywhere else in City government.

Then embarrass him about the hiring/contract situation. Instead of having little cowardly response blurbs here and there the FOP should call him out on his bullshit. Bring up the fact that hiring security guards to do police work is playing with fire. If they're not going to do it who will? The FOP's main responsibility is to the officers it represents, not Daley. The city has problems paying for and hiring essential service personnel? Maybe make mention of the fact that its' priorities are out of whack? That if we stopped spending $$ on block 37 projects, for business that will never come because of the absurd sales tax and parking fees, and spent it on actual city taxpayer needs then we'd have a better place to live.

Ex-city official gets Quigley's county post
April 11, 2009 3:54 PM

North Side political power brokers today picked a 40-year-old former Daley administration official to replace Congressman-elect Mike Quigley on the Cook County Board.

Bridget Gainer, 40, an Aon Corp. executive who held administrative positions at the Chicago Park District and City Hall's budget office, will be the newest county commissioner.

She was selected by Democratic committeemen in 11 wards in a process spearheaded by Ald. Thomas Tunney (44th), who also is committeeman in his ward.

It's only suppose to be used a temporary PATCH during extreme cold months.

It used to be called COLD PATCH at the plant but instead using it only a few months they decided to use it ALL year. Since the winters have been pretty mild nothing was wrong. Then we got hit HARD !!!!

They changed the name to HIGH PERFORMANCE MIX ??? ... WTF !!!!

They're filling and RE filling the same holes. The bosses REFUSE to let CDOT use HOT MIX. It actually costs less per ton then the cold shit !

The only reason LIttle Tommy is at CDOT because 3 guys sold asphalt. In total was only 200K worth. Little Tommy has spent over 5 Million on unnessary GPS, creating a management accountability office which has about 5 retired cops working in it making about 70+ a year. No idea what they do ... lol ...well they pick up a pay check is one thing....

Can i retire and work for the CPD as a boss ?

Too many commisioners, managers, superintedents etc etc etc ... not enough indians to do the work.

ps
The guys on Vanburen St's hole will stay filled because they used proper material and actaully ROLLED they material ... lol... on CDOT they guys HAND tap it down ? ... WTF

to me it is obvios that the streets are deliberately put together with defective materials compared to the materials used in other states, cause it's totally corrupt here. The faster they fall apart, the more Repairwork contracts, paid for by taxpayers, the patronage workers, paid for by taxpayers, and pay-to-play by Daley the Madman, for the companies to do all the work, puts even more and bigger money into the Greedy Mayor's pockets. Then he hires a pay to play guy to blame it on some unusual peculiarity of conditions in Chicago, that only an imbicile would believe. Streets are fine in neighboring States that have even more severe weather than Shitcago. They don't however, have the greedy back room scamming when it comes to everything needing to get done in their jurisdictions. Just anoher day in Shitcago.

When you file a claim they take forever and only payu half, so you know they will screw everyone now that the city has no money. My fellow officers, just think about all the money that this little shiot mayor gave away to his buddies for work never preformed, yet we work everyday, some of us harder then others but we get nothing, I'm not looking forward to any retro pay or raise, the city is going to buy off some arbitrator and he will rule the city has no funds. I'm so so gratful that my time is dwindling down, about 20 months left, I am really troubled that the young cops out there will have nothing to look forward to on this job, A Sgt who cares about you guys., Happy Easter and Happy Holidays to the Jewish officers.

William Cellini, yes the same Bill Cellini who has been indicted with Blago, has made millions with his asphalt contracts within the State of Illinois. Is any of this starting to sound like a broken record?

A HOTEL AND AN OFFICE BUILDING

SPRINGFIELD OFFICES

APARTMENTS

LOBBYING

TRADE ASSOCIATIONS
Cellini has spent 23 years as top executive of the Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association, a group that represents road builders, engineering firms and other companies that work on state highways. He is also the executive director of the Illinois Concrete Pipe Association, the Illinois Association of Wastewater Agencies, and the Precast Prestressed Producers of Illinois. Cellini represents and lobbies for the association members who bid for state contracts, particularly with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the agency Cellini created. The association members are reliable sources of campaign contributions for Gov. Edgar and various other state officials. The pavement asociation holds its annual meeting in Cellini's state-financed hotel, where the members bestow their man of the year award, usually upon a state official such as Gov. James Thompson.

The Feds wont get to his millions though he has transferred his fortune to Dubai so his family will not suffer if and when he goes away to the "joint".

It is a know fact down in Springfield that certain legislative districts get roads in their distrists repaved every year because of their shady dealings, guess who gets those contracts. The problem is that the City has opted to "Cold Patch" all of these pot holes. Cold patching is NOT the answer. A pot hole is born when the base and sub base has been compromised. Water and erosion has weaken the BAM/BINDER/SURFACE mixture of the asphalt. BAM is bituminous aggregate mixtures use as a base, binder is the adhesive mixture (oil based)that binds the base to the 1/2 inch surface mixture. When this gives way to a pot hole, the only way to properly repair it is to tear out and widen the hole, replace the base and sometimes the sub-base substances with suitable aggregates and or sand base, resurface with asphalt "HOT MIX ASPHALT" asphalt must be put in place with a temperature no lower then 180 degrees, this asphalt must then be compressed or knurled into place by tantem rollers or pneumatic press to subtain consistency and intergrity....or you can wait until next Spring and bitch about the same pot holes in the same location.

You know, they have since re-paved it, but I can remember IDOT trucks out along Milwaukee ave. (State Rte. 21)in the city, and what they would do would be to drizzle tarry stuff in between the 'strips' of asphalt that came out of the paver. Although not perfect, the road lasted quite a bit longer than anything the city put down. If you look, many of our potholes are in the cracks between the 'strips' of asphalt. Maybe the city could borrow an idea from the State...

Saw Byrne on television yesterday explaining what has been done thus far. He concluced his press conference with the following remark and I'm paraphrasing : We are going to resurface ALL the streets with stimulus money. I'm sure the next press conference will be about people are complaining because the streets are all being resurfaced (and they are being inconvenienced).

I'm wondering...is he that "safe" to be that arrogant and sarcastic towards the public who pays his salary? Who in the fuck does he think he is to talk like that? You are a public servant jagoff. Apologize, do you job and shut your fucking sarcastic Irish mouth.

"OT: Anyone know what Police Departments in Illinois takes Lateral Moves?

4/11/2009 04:42:00 PM"

Arlington Hts. takes laterals, you just have to ride w/ an FTO for a few weeks. They max out paywise in 5 years as opposed to 20 for us.
Start calling up various municipalities see who's hiring. You'll probably have to submit to a Polygraph, depending on how long you've worked in the land of lies that may prove difficult?

I have a cabin way up in Northern Wisconsin. About five years ago a road crew tore up and resurfaced about 12 miles of road in 6 weeks. Five years later that road is still in great shape and it is a main highway that receives a lot of traffic. Highway crews from Illinois have been adding a third lane on the 90 tollway for over four fucking years now and there still is no end in sight. Here in the Chicago it's the same bullshit, they repave the streets and less than two years later the streets look like the surface of the moon. What a fucking scam. This city, county, and state are by far the worst in the country. I can't wait to get the fuck out here. Signed Only 6 years to go!!!!

SERIOUSLY - Whats the problem with building these roads the same way and with the same material as is done with landing strips at the airports. Those suckers stand up to the constant pounding every few minutes, winter, spring, summer and fall and you better believe they dont pothole up like these shitty ass streets in shorthanks kingdom. So....whats the problem with that?

One of the better scams I ever witnessed was the resurfacing of Grand Ave from Armitage to Austin. It took about four years and TWICE the "Minority Firm" (some Mexican named company) that was doing the resurfacing had to tear up newly surfaced asphalt and start all over again. Just ask anyone who worked in 025 or Area 5 at the time. I'd like to know what that fucked up project cost the taxpayers of this city because you know the illegals who live in the neighborhood didn't pay for it. Oh yeah and they got the brand new street lights. FUCK YOU DALEY I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR ASS GO TO PRISON.

shortshanks has been "cold patching" his hemerrhoids lately and that is why he is cranky. it has nothing to do with the parking meter fiasco, a pissed off public and police department, his kid the entrepreneur, or his affinity for all that free airline travel.
