"Still Chicago's to Lose"

  • A week after the International Olympic Committee's Evaluation Commission ended their trips round the four cities bidding to win the right to host the 2016 Olympic Games the perception is still that Chicago will have to trip over their laces if they are not to win it.

A source close to the IOC told AFP that "it is Chicago's to lose" after Morocco's 1984 Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion Nawal El Moutawakel and her fellow IOC Evaluation Commission members had left the last of the four cities Madrid.

As is the case with previous visits to other bidding cities for other games, the end of visit press conferences were a series of polite and bland statements expressing their impressions of the candidates - their report will be delivered a month before the vote is taken in Copenhagen on October 2.

However, the source said that whilst useful and a way for the candidates to meet and greet IOC members - the only time they can host IOC members in their respective cities since the fallout from the Salt Lake City scandal which resulted in several members being expelled for selling their votes - it was clear Chicago was still the frontrunner.

At this point, we imagine it'd take a Daley indictment to derail the train.

IOC picks Chicago for the 2016 Olympics on Oct 2nd, 2009.

On Oct 3rd, 2009, Richard M. Daley is indicted for tax evasion, official misconduct, fraud, embezzlement, failure to pay his water bill for his natural adult life, wire fraud, criminal conspiracy, City abuse and neglect, eavesdropping, and other assorted crimes and misdemeanors.

On Oct 4th, 2009, the Chicago City Council meets in emergency session and sends a tersely worded message to the IOC: "Never mind, thanks anyway. Oh, and the mayor would like you to return his deposit, (wink - wink), to the Shortshanks defense fund. Thank you!"

Two great news items.

1. Olympics are coming and tax payers will pay for them.

2. All of the people who use the lakefront will have to pay to park. I am sure all the 70 year old people on social security who like to walk, relax or fish at the lakefront will like that move.

Great city to be From.

Our European operatives have confirmed that the LearJet that left ORD for Zurich landed yesterday afternoon.

They loaded three steamer trunks, contents unknown, into a van on the tarmac and drove off. Our guys tailed it as it pulled up to Credit Suisse and unloaded.

Can you say DA CHICAGO WAY?

I don't understand how this whole Olympics debacle can still be underway. I have not met a single resident of Chicago (suburbs shouldn't get a vote bc they won't foot the bill) who supports the Olympic bid at all. It's already estimated to cost city taxpayers over $1 Billion and it's still 7 years away!

Where is the outrage? Why aren't people fighting this?

Or maybe it will be another long, drawn out parking meter situation where no one will complain until it's done and too late. Just look at what happened to London getting stuck with the bill for 2012 (see article link below). Wake up, citizens. You're about to be screwed...again.

I was under the belief that we weren't going get the olympics because the committee is upset that the funding is SUPPOSE to be from private donors, or at least the majority. Basically, the government is saying sure we'll take the olympics but someone else will pay for them. We all know taxpayers will foot the bill. I really hope this article is not true. Otherwise, a big fuck you to jody and daley and off I go!

I hope they send over the Loevy that looks like Andy Dick. Maybe they'll keep him. They'll have to send old Jesse to get him back, and he hasn't had too much success lately. I can dream can't I?

Is the Belmont/Central area to be an Olympic venue? Maybe the pierogi-rolling event, huh? Blocks and blocks of new sidewalks, curbs, light poles, etc. being installed by this bankrupt city.

Boy, are they putting brand new shiny blue recycling cans into "better" areas first -- Roscoe Village and Ravenswood Manor come to mind. Identical to the black 90-gallon totes, just bright blue.

I don't get it, but then I don't get a lot of things about this city anymore -- like the luxury condos on Montrose with a fine view of the loaded Mexican scrap metal trucks parked outside, or the homeless with their shopping carts stumbling past the "Shoemaker Lofts" project at Belmont/Pulaski...

The whole place is getting to be like this. Have/have not with no middle ground -- and that's without the Olympic$.

I don't know what all the hub bub is about. Everyone knows our duffle bag filled with 100 dollar bills was larger than our competitor citys duffel bags!

Did anyone expect anything less from the most corrupt political organization on planet earth? (And don't forget who our prez is?)

What other developmentally delayed politicians (aka aldercreatures) from a competitor city would guarantee the IOC that Chicago taxpayers would ante up 500 million if the olmpics lose money? Only our aldercreatures (aka developmentally delayed politicians) would agree to those terms under Ceasar's thumb pressure.

Render unto Ceasar what is Ceasars'.
