What a Night

Sounds like another Saturday disaster:
  • A 3-year-old boy was fatally shot early today in what appeared to be an accident in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said.

Jaquan Reed, of the 500 block of Plum Grove Road in Roselle, was shot in a home in the 4700 block of West Van Buren Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

  • Two people were slain overnight in separate shootings, according to Chicago police.

In the first attack, a 25-year-old woman was in a vehicle in the 8300 block of South Brandon Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. when an assailant fired and she was hit in her abdomen, according to a police news release.

[...] In the second attack, a 19-year-old man was shot in his abdomen shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 5100 block of West North Avenue, according to the release.

  • A man was critically injured late Saturday in a shooting in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

The victim, who is in his 30s, was in the 600 block of East 87th Street about 11:55 p.m. when struck by gunfire, police said.

And the police were shooting, too:
  • An on-duty officer shot someone early today in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side after the suspect fired a weapon on the street, police said.

The officers saw the gunman fire the weapon in the 5400 block of South Homan Avenue, then the gunman turned and pointed the weapon at the officers, according to a police news release.

  • Chicago police fired shots Saturday night on the Near South Side, but no one was hit, authorities said.

Details were sketchy as the investigation continued as of about 11:30 p.m., said Officer John Henry at Police News Affairs. He said one person was believed to be in custody following the shooting near 14th Street and Blue Island Avenue.

Just another regular weekend in the big city.

A class that was behind us in training shot a spitball at a FBI agent who was giving a block of instruction. It was all in fun right???? The FBI and Academy should have thick skin right??? Nothing should of came of this right???
Because of that incident the Academy stop letting recruits wear the full uniform until graduation. That's right now you know the academy went to the khaki uniforms.
That PPO should file a complaint with the Fire Academy.

The guy that posted that original post is a liar. I was in the academy in 93 and we wore the standard CPD uniforms, sans patches. The spit ball incident happened in 1995, maybe even 1996, and there was no FBI Agent involved. There was an all out spit ball fight amongst "grown men".

It's sad that someone would steal THIS, of all the "war stories" out there, and try to make it their own. Bet he's got a merit promotion or two under his belt already!

Off topic...perspective

The odds of catching a DUI fireman off duty is very high. Now let the fire academy instructors laugh again. Pay back is a bitch.

5/15/2009 09:31:00 PM

And so are you. The instructors are right, it was funny! If you want this job kid, you better develops a sense of humor. My class would have spent hours crafting a little practical joke for our brothers in the C.F.D..

I agree with the above paragraph.

I only have 10 years on, but when I was in the academy. I was the oldest, fattest, slowest guy in my class. (I was in my mid to late 30's)

I remember "Welcome to the Gym". It was raining that day, and we had to run down and then up the ramp at Whitney Young, I thought I was gonna die! But two brothers who I didn't even know yet took an arm each and dragged my fat ass up the ramp. It was the development of teamwork.

At the end of the run, in the rain mind you, they made us do push ups in the infield of one of the baseball diamonds across the street. It was six inches of mud...We all were covered from head to toe with yellow/orange mud. And the instructors were right there with us.I barely made it to the showers.

They paid me to get in the shape of my life. (I wish I could have stayed that way). Every day I laughed my ass off. We were constantly dogging each other out, and playing practical jokes.

So take a deep breath lad, and put things in perspective. I hope that getting hosed is the worst thing that happens to you on this job.

God bless, and stay safe.

This is what new PPO's have to look forward to? Forget police work. Instead practical jokes during the tour of duty. This is so sad. No wonder crime is rampant.

5/16/2009 11:04:00 PM

Boy, I'm on a roll.....
Son, you just don't get it. Joking around and ball busting ARE a part of the job! When you...
Enter a house full of rats, roaches and no working toilets...
See a kid ejected from a car, into a tree, impaled on a branch...
Handle a CSA where the 14 YO had his 8 YO brother go down on him...

You need a release...

So take it easy sparky, and don't take this job too seriously.

An old copper once gave me this advice. Take it for what it's worth.

"Don't treat this job like your wife, treat it like your mistress".

Now go downstairs to the third stall from the left and see what they wrote about you....

...and the occasional apparent mob hit gone wrong...

Images of slaying still hauntShots shattered Park Ridge family

By Megan Twohey | Tribune staff reporter

November 8, 2007

"Cathy Dhamer has no trouble recalling the morning of Nov. 13, 2006, how she handed her husband his lunch bag in their Park Ridge home, kissed him goodbye and then watched him meet his death. After walking toward the driveway, where his Chevrolet Equinox was parked, Gerald Dhamer turned and began running back toward the house, said his wife, who watched from the front door.

"Behind him a masked figure dressed in black lifted what appeared to be
a shotgun. Gerald Dhamer had time to yell two words -- 'Please no!' -- before three shots were fired and he fell to the sidewalk..."
