The Specter of Burge Again
This time, it's Madigan's office that collapses like a house of cards:
- Two longtime prison inmates whose convictions were linked to alleged torture by discredited former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge will go free after prosecutors today decided not to pursue a new trial.
Ronald Kitchen and Marvin Reeves earlier in the day had been granted a retrial by Cook County Circuit Judge Stanley Sacks on their convictions more than 18 years ago for the 1988 slayings of two women and three children in a Southwest Side home. Prosecutors said the five were suffocated or beaten because of a $1,250 cocaine debt owed Kitchen by one of the women.
Late this morning, Illinois Assistant Atty. Gen. Richard Schwind told Criminal Court Presiding Judge Paul Biebel his office had decided after reviewing both cases that it could not sustain its burden of proof and said the state was dropping charges against both men.
Two women and THREE children. Children. They must have had some proof at some point. The one jagoff got FIVE life terms. But the minute someone brings up the bogeyman of "Buuuuuuurge," prosecutors get weak knees and shrunken testicles. Fuck it, go to trial with what you had 18 years ago. They might surprise themselves and win one. We'll bet $1,000 that Burge never touched a hair on either of these scumbags.
We suppose we should be happy these pieces of garbage were kept off the street for 18 years at the minimum, but we aren't. Some bottom feeder is going to attempt to make a bundle off of the taxpayers again. And two pieces of crap, who never would have earned a million dollars in two lifetimes, are looking at a payday after slaughtering five souls.

One of the adult victims was the daughter of a PO, two children were his grandchildren. She took in a woman (and 3 kids) she worked with when the woman lost her apartment. It was the co-worker who was thought to be the target.
un belivable.. now i guarentee that every arrest that burge either worked or approved... and there were far more that he had nothing to do with but has his name because he signed off or approved are going to be "reviewed" and the allegations are going to fly and these murderers are going to be let go. this city, country and legal system is a disgrace. this is not the united states I grew up with. this country is falling apart. it is being destroyed by the liberals in charge... and those liberals who feel the need to open thier mouth and speak out about every little thing. history dictates that every major super power has been over thrown and destroyed. the united states is next. we are at the very end of being in power. it worries me what this country will be in 20 years... most likely we will be overpowered and will not be in charge. the liberals have ruined the country and the rest of the world is watching and waiting for the right time to pounce.. the red, white and blue that we have fought for is beginning to fade away. sad that many men and women died for this country and it is all being thrown away. every man is given his due process as these two men deserve... but to just let them go because of john burge and an allegation is rediculous. god help us all.
No payday. You have to be declared actually innocent to get money. In this case, there is no determination that they didn't do it, just that after all this time they don't have the evidence to put on a new case. That leaves them in legal limbo.
The good news is these bottom feeding sleuths won't enjoy their freedom for too long. It's all they know and crime will prevail once again and put these animals back in the slam.

Taylor has admitted he does a cost benefit analysis prior to taking a client. If he cannot make money on the case he will not take it.
I remember this very well. I lived in that neighborhood at the time. I believe that you can bet the bank that the P.O. who's daughter and grandchildren were slaughtered would NEVER rest till the guilty were punished. He/she would most certainly not be satisfied with locking up just anyone- it had to be the guilty. The very fact that the P.O. was satisfied with the original outcome gives lie to any profession of innocence these monsters could make.
I thought that there was no final ruling on Burge? All this is on hearsay, the stories that get shared and grow in the tiers on the jail/prison block? How disgusting.

It is not the Cook County S.A. Office handling the cases at this point.
Illinois A.G.s office is now in charge of reinvestigating and deciding if they will go forward for a retrial of the Burge cases. The trial experience in the A.G.s Office might not be up to the level of the S.A. office. I can't remember any Burge case they picked to retry.

That is the problem SCC. The fact that you idiots did not cut that loser lose as soon as the allegations started piling up is "YOUR" fault. If you would have immediately dismissed Burge there would be no possibility of other "assholes" lying about what Burge may or may not have done to him. Keeping him employed for two decades after allegations came up within a few years of his employment starting was a serious mistake. You then empowered guys that are seeking a way out of their problems to blame Burge and his men. The simple fact is there is no credible evidence that Burge or him men did not do what is alleged. However, if the CPD & FOP got rid of him as soon as it was known that Burge was problem there would not be any way to use Burge as an escape hatch.
Maybe one time you should talk about who benefited from Burge's continued employment with the CPD. The powers, you know, the guys not in blue that benefited from having Burge close all those heater cases so they could tell the nice white voters that they are fighting crime. You rail against them everyday but fail to make the connection to Burge and instead point blame at people that are either true victims or are manipulating a situation that was not of their making, but the making of the powers that continued to make sure Burge stayed on the street.
If you want to have credibility start making connections between clout, horribly abusive cops, and the powers that benefit from these assholes staying on the job doing what they are doing. You think it is a coincidence that "special units" almost always end up going off the reservation and that their sponsors, the people that truly benefit are never taken to task for allowing it to happen.
Have one blog about who most benefited from Burge's rein of terror?
Have another one about why 16 years after his termination for at least one brutal interrogation the FOP is still funding his defense when those paying for it continue to deal with the repercussions of what that asshole did?
Your all about patrol/beat officers then explain why current officers are paying for the defense of a criminal? Someone you all would arrest on a daily basis for his actions. At least one of the allegations has to true, that is enough to put him away.

WRONG! They need the declaration of "actual innocense" in order to get some money from the state (a few hundred thousand). They don't need it to sue the officers and the City.

The fact remains someone killed the children but here is a open question to the dissenters on this blog, are you in agreement that Burge did not beat anyone or are you saying you are fine with his police procedures. And by the way, there are many good cases these students will not take. I know of several people who cannot even get pro bono lawyers to take simple cases that will likely cost them employment. Not all black people are looking for a payday from the state. Most want to work, pay taxes and raise families.

This is the TRUTH, these mutts killed those people and the cost of retrying the case (in my opinion) would certanly cost less that what Tricky Dicky will allow the Corp Coun to give these mutts.

When Devine was an attorney prior to being the CCSAO, he represented someone involved in the burge depositions, so the entire CCSAO was conflicted out from prosecuting the cases. So....the AG's office became the prosecutors on the cases.

You do understand that any case that Burge was remotely connected to is tainted.
You do understand that even an imcompetent defense counsel is going to get Burge on the stand and get him to take the 5th.

Because Burge is going to go to jail, and the state already knows this. Therefore retrying this case will be a waste of time and money.
Further, most high cases with Burge's name attached will be a loss.

During Burges time we had the Greylord judicial coruption occurring. How come no mention of that corruption, and why the corruption probe in other Cook County juristictions were stopped. Could it be too many lawyers and judges were going down? And no police were involved in this corruption. Plenty of lawyers were and are continuing to this day fixing cases.
To all those who call Jon Burge's tactics "torture". I went to school from 1959 to 1971 in Chicago.I had nuns and brothers that would put Burge's method to shame. You people don't know what torture is. If they'd kept corporal punishment legal, we wouldn't be having the crime problem we have today.

holy crap scc, I just read the court document and why the hell did they let these guys go. everything that the bad guy states about being beaten into a confession is refuted by physical evidence and independent testimony. he was given a clean bill of health and said he was fine at cook county reveiving and kitching said he was bleading and limping out of the station into the wagon on the way to county. the camera outside of the station showed him walking swiftly without any pain of limp into the wagon, it also showed him not in pain or bleeding. it was the "cornerstone" of the court case to refute his testimoney as the court document states. there is also testimony from an independent jail house informant who gave facts about the case that only the killer would know who testified. why the hell is this case no being re tried... why are these murderers out on the street again... why is somebody not picking this case up again. this is total sh*t!
Burge will not go to jail. I will give a large part of my pension to keep that man out of jail and I am by no means the lone ranger. Yes, a benefit for him would be huge. The last one was. The media was out in force and the police back then didn't give a rats ass. We even wore very big pins with Burges name boldly and proudly displayed. There were tons of coppers of every ethnic background.
Here's another one that'll mag you gag. Leroy Orange and Leonard Kidd. Look that one up. Two of the absolute worst I ever saw. Devil eyes. I only saw them one other time. That was in the eyes of a thing that raped and murdered a young child in the jets. The mother of the child was moving that day and she was distracted for a few minutes. That was all it took. He threw the baby out the window hoping to destroy the evidence. Satan in the flesh.
