Heroes

  • Joe Martinelli and Charles Daly grew up across the street from each other in the Budlong Woods neighborhood. They went to Transfiguration Elementary School together. They played baseball and football together.

[...] On Tuesday, the two boyhood buddies were re-united as heroes.

Martinelli, 38, a Chicago firefighter, was awarded the Lambert Tree Award, this year’s highest award for fire bravery.

Daly, 39, received the Carter Harrison Award, the year’s most prestigious police award.

  • Daly’s heroics occurred in October, 2008, after he and another officer engaged in a foot chase with a man they saw creating a disturbance at Chicago and Homan.

During the chase, the offender was observed pulling a handgun from his waist band before stumbling to the ground. As the partners attempted to disarm the man, the offender bit both officers on the hand as he tried to grab one of their weapons.

The man then pointed his own gun directly at Daly’s partner from point blank range. Daly calmly fired a single shot, wounding the offender and saving his partner’s life.

And a good job by the firefighter also.

Last year a crazy gunman fired and hit a 6th district officer in the foot then barricaded himself in a dark alley. Sgt. A.K. facilitated the removal of p.o.'s from the alley and confronted the gunman face to face. The gunman point black shot Sgt. A.K. in the chest (vest), yet A.K. returned fired upon this crazed gunman that was terrorizing the area.

Great job to both the officer and the firefighter on the honors.

But just remember it is only meaningful "to us" (families and fellow officers) and not to "them" (the majority of civilians).

Most civilians don't care one way or another what we do or what happens to "us." So take the lesson of Sgt. Daly and do it for your partner only (meaning "us") and to hell with "them".

Why am I so cynical this morning?

I finally had some down time to read September's FOP newsletter.

Rich Aguilar relates a story of Retired P.O. Tim Mosher.

I think EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE A MOMENT TO READ IT.(It will tell you how the Department and the City really feel about "US", just by their actions)They feel this way 364 days a year toward "us", than 1 day a year they honor brave officer's such as Sgt. Daly with a ceremony.

To summarize:

P.O. Tim Mosher is an 86 year old retiree, living in the South western U.S. He had 30 years of service to this city when he retired in 1976. In 2007, someone at HQ decided since we had new stars, why not let retirees swap their 1955 design "retired stars" for the newly designed style. Many opted to do this and were placed on a waiting list. P.O. Mosher waited patiently, he was finally notified to pick up his in person at HQ. He is now very ill and can't travel 1800 miles to do this. He called the FOP Lodge for assistance.

FOP Financial secretary Aguilar contacted Human resources. They were unsympathetic, and stated the retired officer would have to come "in person" to get it.

Aguilar contacted Director of Human resources, Tracey Ladner,(A CIVILIAN) who never returned his calls. Aguilar than appealed to Theodore O'keefe Deputy Superintendent of Administrative services (ALSO A CIVILIAN)and sent a personnal letter on behalf of 86 year old (Ret)P.O. Mosher.

Aguilar in his letter offered to personally come to HQ & sign for it and FedEx it to P.O. Mosher, "at my expense."

After 5 month's Financial Secretary Aguilar recieved a letter from some Sgt (probably a merit hack)at HQ denying Aguilar's request at the direction of O'keefe most likely.

Shame on you "sergeant kiss-ass" for being a lapdog for those two cowards!I hope you at least attempted to intervene for P.O. Mosher.

The response and the way it was handled is no surprise to any one of "US" wearing the uniform, because "they" are civilians..JUST LIKE OUR SUPERINTENDENT, and will never have our backs!

I hope the FOP goes directly to J-Fed, to see if he has "anything resembling a spine" about this issue.

Sgt. Daly and the firefighter honoree "enjoy" your 1 day in the city spotlight. Because you'll spend the next 364 day's not under a spotlight, but under a microscope!(Just like the rest of us) Great job anyways from "us"..screw "them!"

P.O. Mosher get well soon, and I wish you another 30 years of retirement because you've earned it!

Thanks to Rich Aguilar for highlighting this sad display of what passes for "leadership" within the CPD now-a-days!

Thanks SCC..RANT OVER!

B.H.

Basically, because the dept realized it was doing a suck ass job in actually getting officers their awards. Awards were being handed out at a ceremony when the incident occurred at least 2 years prior. So, and this is just my understaning - they basically "cut their losses" and said we need to get these out, even if there's no ceremony. It's sad that it even got to that point.

3 to 5 years for an award...

3 to 5 days or less after the alleged incident for the department to send you a Nasty-Gram informing you of your newfound POW status or unpaid time off... Of course after a thorough investigation.

By no means sour grapes. Just a poignant observation of another thing that's wrong with this department. No worries though, j-fart & company are the smartest people in the history of the department and they're fixing this...

Right... Like trying to untangle a ball of yarn a hype used to wipe their ass with.

Hearty congrats to the recipients for a job well done.

J-Fraud has no spine or heart.
This entire administration has no heart.

This matters not to anyone but those of us that have worked to "EARN" it.

Look what the J-Fraud administration did to the Gordon family when this sham administration fired Mike's brother.

Stick up for each other because these people do not care about you or your families.

Where does the retired officer live?

Perhaps there is someone that is traveling to that area of the country that could hand deliver the retired star and in turn make a retireee very happy.

Shortall, LaRocca and Vences and Mendoza.....They responded to a call a woman firing her shotgun at the neighbors....they went to the house, she confronted them, firing at them, they returned fire advancing up the stairs...in the meanwhile all three got peppered with buck shot repeatedly....they advanced up the stairs again getting shot at again and returning fire.....she ended up DRT.....it was a damn fine job by all and also very deserving of the recognition, what sucked was Mendoza, who was involved got left off the list for this ceremony....damn shame, hes a good copper and got screwed......its always nice to be recognized for the acts you do, but whats nicer is that they all made it out alive because you were looking out for each other.........Nice job guys, proud to say I worked with you!

Whoever's in a position to help out Retired P.O. Mosher, should.

That's what we're talkin about, Ladner and all the other civillians in critical decision making positions don't understand the value of that star, and what it means to "us".

Here you've got a retired po in his 80's, give him the dignity of your respect for his 30 years of service to this city. We know that it means nothing to you, but it means a hell of a lot to "us", and it damn sure means a lot to him.

Dept. Supt. Radney said it best at his cake & coffee: in full dress uniform, he said "I know you're all wondering why I'm in uniform today, and fighting back the tears he said "I love this uniform." and the tears flowed from him, and from every person in that room. Because we all knew exactly how he felt.

That star means the same thing to P.O. Mosher.

I am not going to diminish the sergeants act of bravery or tarnish a reputation; however if you track the career paths of certain individuals on this job you will quickly observe another dynamic at work. And while Chuck represents the best of that system, Wysinger represents the larger balance. Anyone remember Greg Jaglowski's reward for ending Clemie Hendersons murderous rampage at Montefiore? Patrolman as Youth Officer. He, much like the rest of us, wasn't part of the club.

How about the officers that were actually shot and returned fire. Used to be you got to at least pick a spot. Now you can't even be put on the paper for an award you are most deserving of. UNFRIKIN REAL!

Vences Larocca Shortall Mendoza.................Sgt AK and a handful of others. I mean wtf. A foot chase and an offender killed. Shit I have 2 of those myself and never asked for shit. This department is ass backwards just look at last year's receipient. JOKE!
