Shortshanks Backs Unions!

Unless they're a stumbling block to his new story of being a "reformer," right?
  • Mayor Richard M. Daley is considering the idea of privatizing McCormick Place, according to published reports Tuesday.

The mayor told the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association Monday night that "being in the private sector you manage it and get out of the business of McCormick Place, in the sense that it should be fully privatized," the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.

Daley believes privatization could cut costs, the Tribune reported.
Really? What ever gave him that idea?

Daley is stuck in a precarious position where he needs to slash the cost of doing business in Chicago while at the same time maintaining an impossible level of "services" expected by the reverends and the votes they control. And the only way to do this is to jettison the union support democrats have enjoyed for generations. It's a suicide run. And from our perspective, it's funny as hell.

McCormick Place charges $72 for a case of soda pop, $38 for a gallon of milk.

This is where the outrageous over runs are at. These are Daley's buddies enriching themselves.

OFF TOPIC -

But worth reiterating.

I've posted in the past about refusing to drive a department vehicle for any number of reasons:

- bad brakes
- leaky/loud exhaust
- cracked windshields
- inoperable/worn wipers
- completely or partially non-working emergency
equipment
- missing or damaged rearview or side view mirrors
- non-cinching or worn/frayed seat belts
- poor alignment
- worn tires
- any illuminated "idiot" light
- loose/dangling wires from the dash
- non-adjustable seat backs

There is absolutely NO way ANY supervisor can order you to drive a vehicle that you reasonably believe isn't roadworthy and poses a risk to your, your partner's or anyone else's safety.

As I stated before: DOWN EVERY VEHICLE THAT HAS THE SLIGHTEST THING WRONG WITH IT. Any of the vehicular maladies listed above can potentially lead to accidents and injuries. I'm sure there are countless other reasons to down a car.

Does anyone care to take a couple minutes before their next tour and snap a few pictures with a digital camera or their cellular telephone and forward those pictures to SCC? Maybe we can collectively assemble one hell of a compilation that can be forwarded to Mr. Kass. Pictures of: outside number, mileage, tires, missing door panels and dashboard components, the rat's nest of wiring collapsing from under the dashboard...you get the idea.

"Deplorable" is an accurate descriptor of 90% of the CPD vehicle fleet - and not just esthetically. Mechanically our cars are shit, and have been since MM of yesteryear went the way of the dodo bird. Guys and gals need to down cars every chance they get in order to put the Department's and City's feet to the fire before we lose another brother.

And who knows? Since the department doesn't give a flying-fuck about Officer Safety when it comes to manpower and manning cars 99, downing unsafe vehicles should result in more 10-4 units; a law of unintended consequences, so to speak.

Daley is in a slash and burn pattern, he's figured out that his son will never be Mayor, (the kid is to dumb), so break all of the toys so nobody else can play with them, thereby becoming the reformer. I got mine, you get yours. Are we sure he's not part savage?

Mark my words: McCormick Place will be operated by a joint-venture composed of Walsh Construction, US Equities, McDonough Engineering, Marilyn Katz, and possibly Mesirow Financial (Richie Stein). Privatization is another word for "buddy contracts", and Walsh and US Equities are at the head of the real estate trough here in Chicago.

Someone needs to investigate former-SDS poseur "neighborhood activist" public relations consultant Marilyn Katz. Seriously incompetent yet often included in these mega-sized joint venture projects, like ill-fated Chicago Circulator Project transit trolly project of mid-90s. She has no tangible skills other than having Daley's ear, so she must have some serious leverage on Daley to be included in the list of favored repeat Chicago contractors.

Also by privatizing he can jam his hacks and mob buddies down their throats. Then when the mismanagement issues arise its not his fault.

In theory, a private firm driven more by profits than by politics would have the incentive to make the convention business more efficient. There are areas where you have people who have learned how to do it and do it well, and not to take advantage of that, if you can do it on financially attractive terms, seems to me to be a mistake. However if Mayor Daley hasn't selected the right people to run McPier, then what makes us think he'll pick the right people to work out a fair deal for McCormick Place? There was no process in place to protect the public while insiders met behind closed doors to broker a sweetheart deal for the meters that made themselves millions of bucks. And now we're stuck with it for the next several generations.

I am not defending all unions, but the truth is, unless a worker earns a good wage, they will be unable to buy the things needed to support their families.
They will never be able to buy the big ticket items. To wit: Houses, Cars, Refridgerators, etc.
This is the way the economy works in a capitalistic society. Can someone explain this to "his honor". He is not a long range planner. He has no concept of how a manager should run a city. He is a failure. He allowed Jobs to leave, He never attended to transportation. He has allowed criminals and incompetent people to run dept's in the city.

Every part of government Daley "privatizes", every public property that Daley "leases" or "sells", is admission by Shortshanks that he is incapable of performing the function of Mayor of the City of Chicago.

He is not competent, and apparently can't get anyone who IS competent to work for him at the highest levels.

Why do we have to endure him until he dies of a fatal heart attack like his father? Please, mayoral bodyguards, start approaching him from behind , yelling "BOO!". Or for Shortshanks, "FEDS!". You might as well be part of the solution now.

For what's worth. I had the opportunity to talk with. Few EAC's during the auto show. (eac's are the workers who travel with the show doing set ups and tear downs). They all agree that the exhibiting in chicago is expensive, but the quality of the labor exceeds it's coats. What takes 20 hours on Chicago would take 100 hrs in Atlanta or Vegas. The speed at which a show can get in and get out actually saves money for the exhibitor overall. The biggest problem is that buyers are going to places like Atlanta, Vegas and Orlando. Figure out how to make Chicago a place where buyers want to come do business and you can charge exhibitors what ever you want. Especialy since the high quality of our union guys and girls make the efforts worth any cost.

Hey SCC,

Be sure to start a thread directing readers to post their opinions to Quinn on his budget at:

http://www2.illinois.gov/budget/Pages/default.aspx

I know this comment will never appear on that site, but it was submitted anyways:

"I notice how you indicate on the site the kind of "spending cuts" you believe are going to help fix the deficit, such as reducing useless employee travel and consolidating state office space, cutting employee wages one way or another, reducing their pension benefits ( which is a permanent act ), and reducing healthcare for senior citizens.

Why is it that you, or any other government official refuses to stop irresponsible spending on needless items such as this one that appears on the state website front page:

50 Million dollars on, of all things, the internet. The (20) jobs you claim this 50 million will create in no way justifies this ludicrous expenditure. At a time when illinois is allegedly "in financial crisis", I think we can all do with cable speed internet for another year. It's no great emergency to have fiber optic web surfing speeds in illinois when we're as broke as you say we are.

Without bothering to dig any further to find more wasteful spending, illinois state government absolutely refuses to stop the frivolous spending such as this while at the same time claiming it's employee pensions that are to blame.

If the State of Illinois had deposited their lawfully required matching funds of it's employees into the pension plan on a monthly basis, that money would have been doing it's work as an investment vehicle as it is supposed to do. Instead, the state refuses to release that required debt when it should be due, only to let that debt build up over time, thereby preventing it from working in the markets to provide interest or dividends, and then be used as an excuse that you don't have the money to fund it when the past due amount becomes embarassing.

Illinois state pension funds are underfunded because the state has failed to match the employee dollars they are lawfully required to deposit at the same time the employees contributions are made.

The matching funds required by the state of illinois are part of the total compensation YOU, the government, have agreed to with your employees.

Pension plans, when operated as they are supposed to, DO cover the costs of retirement without fail. That's why they were designed in the first place.

Before you go trying to kill of the retirement system in this state because you refuse to stop spending pork project money, consider how many relatives the state employees have that vote."

hey, update SCC

Comments are appearing almost instantly on the state website.

Maybe some lucid comment suggestions that the readers can start posting over there for everyone to see.

While it's still new, people will be curious to see what people are posting there. We should take advantage of that before interest dies and no one checks the comments anymore.

We need to get intelligent comments streamed to this site that are aimed at curbing the wastefull spending habits of illinois politicians rather than trying to cut off employee pensions and kill their wages to benefit the useless pork plans they spend on.
