Unsafe Vehicle Caused Crash?

  • There are serious questions about the condition of the car being driven by Chicago Police Sgt. Alan Haymaker when he was killed. Officially, the department is insisting the 2005 Chevrolet blue-and-white was in good condition and safe to drive. But, according to CBS 2's Mike Parker, one member of the CPD's top brass is saying something else.

The vehicle that swerved off Lake Shore Drive and slammed into a tree was a "pool" car, not regularly assigned to the streets.

A high ranking CPD officer, who does not want his name used, thinks there was good reason for that. In his words, "this car was like a horse, waiting to be put out to pasture. A lot of these cars shouldn't be driven."
Holy shit.

Hopefully, this is going to open a can of worms the likes of which haven't been seen in the history of the Department. Over the history of the blog, we've been posting comments and complaints about the condition of our equipment, from computers to buildings to vehicles. The hidden scandals of disbanding our own repair shops to shifting the vehicle pool to Fleet where the Outfit-connected sales of damaged yet serviceable vehicles were sold for pennies-on-the-dollar might come to the fore finally. This might only be the beginning.

These unreported scandals have cost us the life of one officer and crippled more than a few for life. Preventable tragedies, each and every one.

J-Fed just opened the door to a huge criminal investigation by stating that the burglars will be charged with murder.

The offender's attorneys are going to guarantee that the condition of the pool car, the road conditions and the failure to salt are all brought out.

This one will NOT die!

Thank-You J-Fed, you have opened the door one way or another to get the TRUTH out.

An outside agency should be brought in to investigate what happened here.

Perhaps the Indiana State Police?

With Governor Quinn bending over for Daley and Madigan I wouldn't trust the Illinois State Police to do a "non political" job. I certainly don't trust the CPD to do an unbiased investigation. Which is a sad thing.

The three questions that need to be answered are:

1. Did the condition of the vehicle contribute to this death?

2. Was manpower an issue? The Sergeant was traveling from approximately 2 miles away from the burglary.

3. Was Lake Shore Drive adequately plowed and salted?

Betcha we hear more truths in the near future than the mayor can bear.

Consider the fact that more bosses are going to be retiring soon than have EVER retired at one time. Some of them are even a tad bitter at how their department has been destroyed in two short years.

And some will tell a goodly number of very hard truths to a naive citizenry. I. Can't. Wait.

Shortshanks's cavalier attitude towards this Dept., from band-aid style maintenance of the fleet, to patronage "promotions" of civilians who have no idea what we do making major policy and budgetary decisions (which obviously have life-and-death implications for working street officers) has finally come home to roost. The selection of a man ill prepared to lead a large, urban Police agency was just icing on a very bitter and lopsided cake.

Time for the media to independently start looking at the physical condition of squad cars and their tires with an expert.

This would be great for ratings and would expose a serious danger, that could potentially result in the deaths of more innocent people.

Police Officers are compelled to drive these "flaming coffins" every day!

42 extra-short's vendetta against the Police Department by not purchasing new cars/ordering fleet to hold back cars for years at a time. There is no reason on God's green earth any car in the fleet should have 100,000 miles!

They're telling us to our faces that we're expendable!!

80,000 miles on Chicago's wretched streets is more than enough reason to retire a car!

And while we're at it... duggie needs a size 12 boot planted firmly in his tight, micro managing ass for this "no assigned car" fuckery. This shit is WRONG and DANGEROUS!

Like other posters have said. At least if you were on a somewhat regular car, you had a fair idea of what was going on with the car and the other people on different watches who drove the car. Now nobody knows what kind of history is behind a car now or who the hell had it before you.

Perfect climate for bullshit integrity checks i.e. supervisors, iad and the soon to be reconstituted inspectors planting shit in the cars in order to rob more Policemen of hard earned pay. (which is why we frisk the shit out of the car now more than ever... under & behind the seats, glove box, ash tray ,under the rear seat, the trunk etc.)

Our regular wagon has 190,000 miles on it. The dashboard sometimes falls into your lap when you hit a big bump or pothole. The rear springs are shot and the rear end drags. The heater vents don't work, only the defrost works. The spot lights work... sometimes. The steering shakes every time you hit a bump. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. This wagon is a dangerous POS. It spends half of each month in the shop getting quickie fixes and then gets sent back to us. It's had two gas-line leaks in the past 6 months. It was so bad that we couldn't breathe while driving it to the area to down the thing. In our case, the pool wagons are better than our regular wagon.

But Jody got a bunch of Tahoes for beat cars.

Whooptie frickin' doo.

Just think, if they didn't pay Weis a double salary for the second job he's never done, we'd be able to get a few new wagons to replace these pieces of crap they give us.

Then they wonder why you're not motivated enough to write any tickets.

*sigh*

Sgt. AL HAYMAKER

I worked with Al the past 7 years. Let me tell you some funny stories that have a point to them.

> He drank water from a glass bottle because he was scared that plastic bottles are to dangerous and have chemicals that could harm you.

> He spent over $5000 to see an "organic dentist" that was not covered by our insurance because he thought he would be "safer".

> He religiously wore his seat belt and drove slower than anyone in 015.

The point I am trying to make is that Al was not the one at fault for this terrible death. Whether it is the city as well as the burglary suspects, I hope they all pay the price.

Rest in peace Al...
The fucking department can't mess with you anymore.

A co-worker of mine left work early a few hours before this accident. Said the roads were deploreable especially being lake shore drive which is considered to be a major arterial road. There were NO signs of salt then so its probably very safe to say there was none at the time of the accident, which could support the statement about cutting off the salt on lake shore drive at least several hours before the accident.

Spin out and rollover accidents are a lot different that rear enders. Ask any NASCAR driver. There are a different dynamics in play. A crappy, unsafe car just makes everything worse and much more deadly. Sgt. Haymaker could very well have been well under the speed limit but factor in crappy tires and unsalted streets and you have the makings of tragedy.

I'm sure that compare to New York and Los Angeles City, the Chicago Police Dept. has to be the leading most out dated police equipment and vehicles. Not to mention when you park your Squad car next to ANY Suburban Police Dept. here in Cook county., it is so embarrassing!

I just want to share you my experienced driving one of these car: Heading about 30 - 35 MPH to A/3 for a routine grease and oil changed, the unmarked car I was driving suddenly shut down in the middle of the road on a rush hour street. I couldn't believe it, but, I felt very lucky that I didn't crash to any vehicle or hit any pedestrian. I'm sure some of you also experienced this unfortunate situation.

In honor to Sgt. Haymaker, the crash where it happened and partial of Lake Shore Drive should be name after him for the great sacrificed he gave to City of Chicago, so he'll never be forgotten and stick it to Mayor Daley on how he screwed this up big time!

Sgt. Haymaker is a HUGE loss to CPD and our deeply condolences to his Family. God Bless and Rest In Peace, Sgt..

Now Jfed wants to speak? Where was he when the Sergeant was killed? Did he go to the hospital, did he go to the morgue, did he go visit the family? That's right, he was taking care of himself that day, what most of us wish we could do but since we are so short, time off is a thing of the past, even when we really need to utilize it.

Let me not digress. My issue is with all of what is being said, the safety of the vehicle, no salt on LSD, our due responsibility to respond no matter what, etc. Those are things that will come out in the wash, but as I go through our CPD dirty laundry I cannot help but wonder why the hell was Mike Masters giving a statement on OUR behalf? I was at the hospital and the morgue. I know for a fact that one of his best friends were there Comm Mealer, Dep. Supt. Dugan was there, ASO James Jackson was there, our Commander was there, Aunt Bea was there as were a host of other bosses and real friends. How can a civilian Chief of Staff possibly think it is appropriate for him to bypass all of OUR CPD family members and speak on OUR behalf.

What is he doing, trying to get more face time? Don't you think you have gotten enough! Don't you think you and the Feds have rubbed it in our faces enough? Now we can't even deal with loosing one of our own for you strategically placing yourself in the midst of our pain! Jfed, Mayor Daley, if you had a heart, Jfed if you were really law enforcement you know what we mean.
We all sat in awwwww as we watched them broadcast that BS while we sat around having our private moments reminiscing about one of us!

To unite and to make his death mean something, do not get into the cars that you KNOW are obviously unsafe. County officers do it all the time. I know it's not the "Chicago Police Way" to openly and officially complain but is it worth dying over? Stop paying for the cars to get fixed with your own money so they don't have to go to motor maintenance. I know many of you do that because you don't want these pool cars to be taken by another unit. Stop changing your own, tires, jump starting and adapting to these death traps. Stand together and refuse to drive these cars. The bosses would not drive their cars if one light was out but look at what you drive. Let the citizens wait because there are NO cars. If you all stick together they can't do anything. You can't strike, but they can't force you do drive an unsafe vehicle. In the words of SCC-document,document, document!!!

The vehicle I was driving was the regular one which was 8 yrs old at the time. It took the City almost a year to find parts for it but they put it back into service as the regular vehicle. The pool car for this vehicle was in better shape. I wrote a to-from to keep the pool car and it was denied. I guess the City really cares about us. Instead they would rather force us on to disabilty. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the Sgt. It could be anyone of us.

And why did they wait until late Tuesday to install the bunting?

Because the body was not posted until Tuesday and they were waiting for preliminary drug and alcohol testing results. The honors funeral would have been denied had they found something of a suspicious nature. Or found anything.

Some would say it was a smart move. Others will be insulted. Regardless of how you feel, know they were looking to wiggle out of this one, plain and simple.

If they could have put all of it on the deceased Sergeant, all the other issues would have disappeared. Vehicle condition, road conditions, salt, flowers, etcetera, all fade away and they would be off the hook. duh mare and j-goof are true pieces of shit.

The "Pool Cars" that this department has should be donated to our military to be used as live fire targets for a mortar range. They are utterly disgusting, unsafe pieces of garbage. AND they have now been sent out to districts to be driven on a daily basis as regular cars because of the overlap and lack of patrol vehicles we now have. Better yet, how about when you go to the area to swap out a car and all they have to give you is a car WITHOUT a cage. What a joke this department is! Anything to bitch about, you bitch about. This is not a conspiracy...YES, the cars are not safe, but ultimately YOU are the driver. You decide if you want to operate the vehicle.
I have been through 22 winters in twice as many shit pool cars. You adapt to the car and you adapt to the road conditions.
Accidents are inevitable, yes indeed, bit the more you drive, the greater your odds are to be in an accident. I believe that the problem was the IMPALA. I further believe that if it were a crown Vic, the car would have offered a lot more protection, given the severity of the accident. The side impact safety differences between the 2 models says Chevy is better rated, but not to mention the size of the respective front seat compartments. I don't know if this impala had a cage, It looks like it did but I can't tell for sure, but if it did, given the mass of Sgt. Haymaker, it didn't help any.
Impalas are for the Short Police, not anyone over 5'10

This is ALL BULLSHIT!!!

Listen to the actual report!!

CBS is complicit with Shortshanks in instantaneously diverting any responsibility for this crash on the conditions of the street!!!!

Streets & San's official comment?

"The streets were "watery"!

BULLFUCKINGSHIT!!

This is a media diversion for Daley so he can keep the blame on the CPD for this accident!!!

Don't let Daley foist this all onto the CPD when there was a standing order to NOT SALT LSD!!!

The end result of this bullshit will be the department claiming it was Al's fault for driving the car in the first place by the time Shitshanks and his media dogs are finished!!!

This "high ranking" official was TOLD to say this shit in order to swiftly turn blame against the CPD, and ultimately back onto the driver of the car!!!

Our car dies for no reason at least 3 times a day. When hitting the brakes the car vibrates. A loud rattle comes from the rear area of the vehicle. The car has been in the shop several times for these problems and just comes back in the same condition. When the car is downed there are no pool cars to use. The garage says the brass get the good cars first. Not only is this not safe, but it forces us to drive slowly unable to respond as quick as we would like to 911 calls. We have to worry first about our safety and the publics by avoiding an accident over responding to a call quickly.

Why do the brass get new cars when all they do is drive to and from work in them and sit in their office all day? Why do the tact Lt's get nice vehicles too when they sit in the office all day also. I don't get the whole company car thing anyway. With their large salaries can't they drive their own personal cars like the rest of us? The shame is when they brag how they haven't put gas in their personal cars for months when I fill up every 6-7 days. SAD!

I hope someone in the media finally has the "big ones" to really expose the deplorable conditions under which our Chicago police officers are expected to work. There are several factors that may have contributed to Sgt. Haymaker's death. The street conditions on LSD when Streets & Sans stopped salting; the poor, unsafe condition of many of the vehicles the police are expected to drive; the fact that so many cars working 99 put more officers in harms way because more cars have to respond to in progress calls for necessary back up; the fact the cpd is under staffed on the street and in the beats; and finally the perp(s) who was/were committing a criminal act, putting officers and citizens in harms way.
Take a look and what type of vehicles and equipment our police officers have, then take a look at what and where the city spends our tax dollars. Look at the nice cars our tax dollars pay for the mayor and his staff to travel in. Most alderman have newer leased vehicles paid for by our tax dollars. Most CPD bosses travel in better, safer cars then the ones their officers ride in. We have wrought iron fences, planter boxes and pretty flowers. Are these things necessary expenditures when we can't even give our officers safe equipment to protect them while they are protecting us?
I believe our mayor's first priority to this city is to provide for the safety of its citizens. For years these priorities have been mismanaged by greed and incompetency in city hall. I hope the citizens and media finally find a voice to expose the deplorable conditions under which our officers are expected to work.
I am so very sad that Sgt. Haymaker lost his life, his wife lost her husband, his daughters lost their father, and we as citizens lost a good man and police officer who put it all on the line to serve and protect us. Do not let his death be in vain.

My sincere sympathy to Sgt. Haymaker's family.

I thank God everyday for the wonderful men and women in blue who put it all on the line every day for the people like me, an ordinary citizen.

We drive cars with well over 100,000 miles responding to 911 calls all day while the brass drive brand new cars with less than 10,000 miles just to get from home to work and back and sit in their office all day. The brass have huge salaries and there is no reason they can't drive their personal cars like the rest of the world. The media should start asking city hall about the waste of company cars.

It was just a matter of time. Every time it snows, the streets are cleared half assed if at all. Squad cars and wagons constantly stuck on sidestreets and have to wait until a supervisor orders a tow to get the vehicle out. A fleet that is pretty much useless during snow storms. They order Tahoes with only rear wheel drive. Weisels SUV is a 4 x 4, why didn't they order the Tahoes like that. Guuees only J-Fed matters when it comes to safety. You think by now, someone would get the idea that Chicago has winters with snow. I remember one year going from 009 to Traffic court in snow. It took me an hour and a half with no traffic. The car just wouldn't get any traction. This city is so corruptrd and ass backwards it's pathetic. The regular cars are shit and the pool vehicle, the few that are left, aren't worth driving over 20 MPH if at all.

I feel really bad about the death of one of our own. But it was inevitable. I took my squad car to EMMD seven time in one month for the same thing. This car was unsafe. The guys in EMMD are not professional mechanics, they work for the city. I remember I picked up a squad and got on the expressway back to the district. The car shut down, yes, shut down, no power with a semi-trailer truck on my ass. There will be plenty more of our people ending up dead or seriously injured. No body want to take responsibility. The gold star officers won't go to bat for us, because they're driving newer vehicles, even the superintendent. No one cares. We are the meat of the Police Department and they give us crap vehicles to drive. These are the same people (EMMD) that would have a squad for two or three weeks (maybe longer)in the shop, then call the district for pickup of squad and the next day call the vehicle back for G & O. How crazy is that. Let your family know when you get into an unsafe vehicle, so they can sue the pants off the city and the department in case something happens (God forbid). The department does not care about our safety, its just hype, be careful about the union too. I send all my love and sympathy to the Sgt's family.

Most people may not agree, but the only exempt who gives half a shit about this department is James Jackson. He is out at scenes related to PO injuries and deaths all the time. He is one of the few. He is a gentleman and always speaks to the troops and addresses them. Something the rest of the exempts barely do, if at all. You may not like him, but he is still a copper at heart and cares about the department. He is the first to let you know how he feels. That's why J-Fed and the rest of the clowns keep him out of the loop. He may be an ass in some peoples eyes, but he is one of the few that will back coppers and be there in a tragedy. The rest just come because they have to show their face. Hey J-Fed, remeber the statement you made quoting General Patton about leadership? Maybe you should get your head out of your ass and start doing as you say.

But let's be realistic, if we downed every car without tread on the tires, with bad brakes, and with a warning light on, half the watch would have to grab a foot post.

Additional Insight:

We grew up in an era of big, heavy rear wheel drive cars. Our first driving experience was behind the wheel of a 1961 Plymouth Fury 383 cubic inch v8, 350+ h.p. and 420+ lb. ft. of torque, retired Illinois State Police pursuit vehicle. Monstrous acceleration and torque and more the exception than the rule to what was on the road but we digress...

Those of us of "certain age" came on the job when CPD fleet was big rear drive, v8 powered sedans. we did our emergency vehicle operation training in big rear drive, v8 powered sedans.

Police tendency is to default to your training in emergency situations whether use of force or emergency vehicle operation.

We have no recollection WHATSOEVER of the city offering any training regarding the emergency handling dynamics of smaller front-wheel drive v6 powered sedans in adverse weather conditions. Let alone when the roads are dry and clear.

The emergency handling dynamics of front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive ARE VASTLY DIFFERENT!

This is one example of many pointing to wanton and willful negligence and a glaring failure by the city in regard to Officer safety and training.

The Mayor, Superintendent and Exempt echelon are SOLELY responsible for this failure and should be held personally culpable and liable.

Small front-wheel drive sedans have NO PLACE as front line patrol vehicles. They are ILL SUITED for the rigors of patrol. NO AMOUNT of structural reinforcement can change that. Especially with the year round DEPLORABLE conditions of Chicago streets.

The only reason these vehicles are in the CPD fleet is because a friend/family member of the Mayor had a dealership that needed some business from the city/submitted a bullshit low bid with a built in kick-back. Period... Full Stop.

The saving in fuel costs is too small to justify purchase of these vehicles so that argument is a loser on it's face.

The Mayor, Superintendent, Exempt echelon, media and public as a whole are expending much energy and capitol telling Chicago Police Officers they're disposable and expendable.

God Bless & Help Us All...

If there is any doubt about the safety of the squad car, get someone to conduct a thorough accident reconstruction. Have the black box pulled on the squad so that the speed and G load can be determined before this stuff comes up "lost". VEHICLE ISSUES!!!!!!!!!!!!

SAD BUT TRUE!!!!

FLEET MANAGEMENT DOES NOT CARE ABOUT

ABOUT OUR SAFETY WHEN IT COMES TO VEHICLES!

WE'RE DRIVING BEAT UP SQUAD CARS!! FLEET STAFF

IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT ALL VEHICLES

IN 24/7 OPERATION ARE SERVICED AND

MAINTAINED WITH THE HIGHEST SAFETY

STANDARDS, STRICTLY BECAUSE THEY'RE USED

AROUND THE CLOCK.

COMMON SENSE!!!!!!

FLEET SHOULD NOT ALLOW ANY VEHICLE THAT HAS

BEEN RETIRED FROM OPERATIONAL USE AND THE

NEXT DAY PUT THEM BACK ON THE STREET

LABELED "POOL CAR". IT'S A NO BRAINER THAT

THESE "POOL CARS" CAN NO LONGER MEET THE

HIGHEST SAFETY STANDARDS!!! IT IS FOR THAT

REASON THEY ARE CONSIDERED RETIRED!!

HANDING OUT POOL CARS IS THE REASON WHY

FLEET HAS THE SLOWEST TURN AROUND WHEN IT

COMES TO FIXING CARS. IT'S LIKE THEY'RE TELLING

US HERE TAKE THIS CRAP OF A CAR, OH! BY THE

WAY, BE CAREFUL "ITS A POOL" WHILE WE TAKE

OUR SWEET TIME FIXING THE NEW CAR. (SLAP IN THE FACE)

WE ALL HAVE EXPERIENCED TAKING IN OUR NEWER

CAR FOR WHAT SHOULD BE A QUICK GREASE AND

OIL AND LEAVE THE GARAGE WITH A VEHICLE THAT

IS MORE DILAPIDATED THAN AN ABANDONED CAR

ON THE WEST-SIDE. THESE POOLS SHOULD BE

CONSIDERED FOR THE POUND OR SOLD FOR SCRAP

NOT PUT BACK ON THE STREET.

NEXT TIME YOU SEE A "POOL CAR" "EYE SORE" OUT IN THE PUBLIC WAY, TAKE OUT YOUR TOW CASE REPORT AND WRITE IT UP TO BE IMPOUNDED!!!

WHAT IS YOUR FOP DOING TO PROTECT YOU?

If your vehicle is unsafe, then you should be able to refuse to drive it per FOP Regulations. Some of these beat cars scare me... tires that look as if the belt is showing, tires that shuld not be on these cars handling the horsepower and driving conditions, I even saw one CPD beat car without a bumper. No joke.

I'll do what I can to help you all in any way as long as it doesn't get anyone in trouble... any photos of bad tires, video, etc whatever. All of a sudden, this has me wondering if PO Solorio's life could have been sparred with good tires and a better beat car when it hit that patch of ice...

The sad truth behind all of this is. For all you guys on here that Daley will get roasted for not salting LSD because of the flowers are crazy. Someone else at S&S will take the fall for him. He has people that take hits and go to jail to keep him safe. This isn't a crime punishable by jail. It is just STUPID to order LSD not salted. Someone will be fired for it. Probably someone that is close to retiring anyways.

chuck goudie investigates on channel 7 at 10 pm , 24FEB10, why are fleet is so old after the mayor vowed to replace the fleet with tahoes. And a whole bunch of tahoes are behind a locked fence covered in snow. The media needs to keep up the pressure. On a side note I would like to put out there that VCG Uniforms is offering the mourning band for free to officers. They ask for a small donation. All proceeds from this go to the good Sgt's family. A thumbs up to VCG......

SCC,

There are several large scandals brewing right now. It is only a matter of time until the truth about everything comes out.

They can only coverup things when we let them get away with it.

UNITED WE STAND!

EVERY large Scandal is covered-up by Daley and his Tools within EVERY City Division, whether CFD, CPD, CPS, etc. This will be NO different. The snakes in the Grass will slither away unscathed, as the investigations will only go as high as they want them to.. What part about Crookago, Crook-County being the most Corrupt Place in the United States don't you understand???. Don't hold your breath. The ones playing along now with wanting to get to the bottom of it all will be the same ones to be the major contributors to the over-all cover-up coming in the future months. They will obfuscate, and twist the truth, to the benefit of the powers to be, as usual.

FWIW, the commander of Evanston PD traffic bureau may have an in with the Northwestern Traffic Institute. I'd drop a dime on him.

OK, Here is what the media should look at, Alot of cars are getting junked and sent to Daley connected Junk Yard, for cheap money and they make tons back by selling off the ggod parts, next our beloved mayor Daley issued an order that he didn't want to see cars on the street with peeling paint on the bumpers, imagine paying the body shops over and over for paint peelin off the bumpers, which by the way had been painted already by the shops that did SHIT work in the first place, if they did it right thre first time then it wouldn't peel off, someone is making a TON of political money, like NAPA auto parts, Get this they get to use Fleet at North & Throop to house the parts they sell the city for FREE, they then have fleet, City Workers deliver these parts to 51st street for distribution, all for free, they charge the city to repair the tires and re-charge the SHIT batteries that they then replace in the cars. AS far as the tires go, they DO NOT use retread tires, I know this for a fact, because the minority contractor who seels the tires to the city would not make any money and then could not make a decent political contribution, FOP & every other organization should be tared and feathered for not protecting thier members, and as far as Daley goes that little POS should be dealt with at election time. Goudie, Zekman, Kass ,Savini, come and get some of this scandel ridden FLEET, and help make Mike Picardi wear a wedding dress in the joint.

2/24/2010 06:14:00 AM

And why did they wait until late Tuesday to install the bunting?

Because the body was not posted until Tuesday and they were waiting for preliminary drug and alcohol testing results. The honors funeral would have been denied had they found something of a suspicious nature. Or found anything.

GET OUTTA HERE! You gotta be kidding me? They were waiting to see if he pissed hot? Can they be that insensitive? They already said he was killed in the line of duty not the performance and that was told to the media waaaaay before they finally posted his information. It is a tragedy that the copper died and a reality check that one of us can die like that and they have to wait until they know that we aren't high to call it. This place blows.

the haymaker family should enjoin the court to preserve the vehicle by court order(Motion for preliminary injunction). generally the legal requirements for this kind of motion are the following:
1) the court wants to see that the future case has some merit(not a high burder of proof at all)
2) the court wants to look at a balance of harms test to see that whatever benefit preserving the evidence might have to the plaintiff outweighs whatever harm this preservation would have to the defendant.
3) the court wants to make sure that its granting injunction does not interfere with some significant public interest

The plaintiff's attorney (representing the Haymaker estate) should have no problem meeting these elements. Hate to give legal advice to the family of a cop in mourning, but the sooner they find a good lawyer the better their case will be.

God bless

I take exception to the comment that the mechanics are not professional at EMMD! Let me tell you how it really is. All Fleet worries about is keeping the #'s down (which means not having a lot of vehicles down for repair). Speaking of Fleet, Our illustrious Figurehead, who was dumped back into Fleet, doesn't have the qualifcations on how to run Police Motor Maint, of a City of this Size. The Professional Machanics offer many good suggestions which fall on Deaf ears. You can thank Mayor Daley for cutting our workforce, we are also forced to take no-pay days every month, and we lost all of our holiday pay. We get NO sick pay, and there is strictly NO overtime, even if there are a lot of cars to be repaired. Mechanics worry about your safety too. We don't want to put anyone in harms way. You also have the responsibitlity to bring your vehicle in for repair, if you feel that it is unsafe, or have any concerns at all. BRING IT IN That's Our Job! So you can do yours Safely.

Hopefully someone close to the Haymaker family has told them to start the process of getting a court order to have the squad car involved impounded so that it can be independently examined to see if it was really safe or not before the city gets a chance to crush it.

When I first came on the job, I had a Caprice Classic pool car where the floor board had rusted through and you could actually see the street under your feet. The officer I was working with, who was my patrol specialist, told me when I pointed it out to him, "Welcome to the CPD, kid."

Since that time, I have seen the choice of pool cars and squadrols get worse and worse. The underlying message from some of the WC's I got was akin to, don't make waves; you like your beat and partner, don't you?

In my opinion there is not this authentic, genuine concern for the blue shirts across the management ranks of the department. Here and there you find some really outstanding bosses. They are outstanding because they worked beat cars for longer than 12 months, before they moved out of patrol and then were promoted from some specialized unit, or inside spot.

Authentic POLICEMEN, who happen to wear white shirts, care for those who still where blue.

Now with the new schedule and rotation of cars, there aren't even good cars for supervisors to drive.

It is a crying shame if a good man lost his life because a safety issue with our vehicles.

In the meantime, I hope Sgt. Al Haymaker will now be assisting us from heaven as we deal with the sad realities of this world and the grim ones of this department.

Had to deal with an administrative Sgt. from your department. I'm going to assume that he has some clout as, well, he didn't seem like a "real cop" to me.

I asked him about morale and he told me that he doesn't think J-Fed is such a bad guy but no matter what he does he will NEVER be given a chance, forgiven or accepted because of Bill Cozzi and selling Cozzi out.

Surprised to hear that "candor" from a clout boy.

Here in the burbs I don't think Cozzi would have been prosecuted but he probably would have been out the door with a deal that he would "be resigned" and the case would be closed, period. They'd rather get rid of problems quickly and quietly.

Pardon this from a nearby outsider, but I can't imagine working under the conditions you do, inside or outside. The outside would probably be more tolerable if the inside had its act together and treated the troops well. The one thing I will say (after seeing some squabbling here_ is that from the smallest nerd to the most macho cowboys, you guys need to have each other's backs as you don't know if the people you work for will.

Keep the powder dry.

Reckless homicide is a good point, Northside. The WEISel is posturing with the felony murder rule to divert attention from the real cause of the sergeant's death. Seize the taped S&S transmissions and bring the snow plow drivers and their bosses before a grand jury.

Even if they don't go criminal, Sgt. Haymaker's family will have a winner for civil litigation.

God bless Sgt. Haymaker and his family.

Based on S&S's failure to salt LSD and a witness reporting the squad car skidded into the pole and tree, how can anyone dismiss negligence and recklessness by the city?

Who ordered the snow plow workers not to salt?

If the 2 burglars get caught, ther's no way they could be convicted of felony murder. The city treats us as cannon fodder followed by their crocodile tears at the funeral.
J-Fed has already circled the city wagons against accountability for Sgt. Haymaker's death.

Hey man, I didn't mean to strike a nerve or insult anyone or anything. I am just saying that the Impalas were a poor choice. Once you add a cage, its like a sardine can. I am sorry if you took it the wrong way. Perhaps I rambled too much diluting my point.

As posted in a newer thread:

I wish that the MSM would step up and address the vehicle issues like they did back in the late '70's.

I drove for a private ambulance company on the south side, working my way through school. I remember one of the TV Stations and/or Newspapers doing an expose' on the deplorable vehicle conditions and missing equipment on the ambulances.

What Say Ye MSM?

You are probably also the ignorant thumbtyper who wrote >2/24/2010 10:55:00 AM

These people are expressing their disgust at what Shorty thinks, might do or has done and NOT saying that they condone it or go along with it. There are a lot of good watch level bosses who who take care of their people. You almost certainly don't work for one and if you started to it wouldn't be long before you burned him/her.

Do you think a Watch Commander can write a check for new cars, for PDTs, ammo or anything else? They bitch about it to the DC, then the DC bitches to the Area Deputy and so on and it gets to Dugan and Jody and then what?

Let me tell you something, until Shorty and the Alderthieves FEAR US and the citizens we will always get the shitty end of the stick.

I posted a comment about the AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT on my "regular car" and had the day crew fix the problem.

The car came back and the light was off and I wondered if they fixed the problem or disconnected the light.

The light came back on.

Surprise!

There will be NO Homicide charge placed against the burglar (Larry Brown)involved in the cell phone burglary that Sgt Haymaker was responding to.

It looks like Damage Control! The orders were given to Cook County States Attorney Anita Alvarez by Daley to kill any possible source of investigation into the needless tragedy.

J-Fed once again caught lying and manipulating facts for fiction.

J-Fed once again shown to be a Daley patsy.

So much for Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity.

Someone needs to get a hold of all the traffic crash reports made for that night from the districts that abutt LSD to determine if road conditions played a part in those accidents.

Fox News stated that a snow truck driver told them that Byrne was out on LSD the night of the accident and threatened the driver of the truck with a reprimand or suspension if he continued to salt LSD after an order was given not to salt. Please Fox news get hold of that driver and have him come forward...How bout checking Byrnes whereabouts on the date and time in question....shouldn't he have GPS on his city radio and/or car? Bet those records have all been erased by now... If he did give the no salt order for LSD Byrne will have to live with this tragedy the rest of his life....Rest in Peace Sgt.

An interesting article on tread depth....Take a look at the stopping distances.

the-quarter/index.html

Buy a tread depth gauge and use it on your squad car tires. If one fails, go to the area and have them change it.

In my 20 plus, I've seen a few decent supervisors that are long gone. Their replacements couldn't hold a candle to them.
Alot is a stretch by any imagination.
A subordinate isn't in the position to Burn any supervisor. They're Management, therefore they have the final word.
Just because you say it is, doesn't make it so,Douchebag.

I dont know where you were, but i was standing right next to the cameras - no one was giving a statement. masters and news affairs were asking the media to keep there cameras off and turned away from the hospital when they brought Sergeant Haymaker out to the ambulance, before leaving for the me's office.

i dont know the guy, and he might be a total asshole, but he wasnt giving a statement or trying to be on the news.

2/24/2010 11:13:00 PM

Nope, now you are not telling the truth. I was there. He DID give a statement. I was standing there in awww, trying to understand why all of the bosses were around various areas and he thought it was appropriate for him to do so. Also, as I watched the news that same night as did millions of others, CLTV showed a small clip from HIS statement. I do understand Sgt. B. Bradley and Sgt. R. Hamilton and others are tasked with reviewing the blog and making sure any truths are countered to protect Mike Masters and the Federal Agent/Superintendent, but you should have some pride in that star that you put on everyday and realize you are being used at this time becuase you serve a purpose.

I would love to see what the new Superintendent does with snakes like you!

I do believe my eyes, not the BS that is posted here by people with no balls, no pride and cannot be trusted.

Another incredible story: Fleet had to cancel the contracts with the Body shops that were doing business with the city after Central Body was caught doing business after the owner was convicted of defrauding the city over 20 yrs ago. then they grant a contract to what must be minorities, this guy is Pakistani and has a Macco shop on 8300 block of South Chicago Ave. Then the city honors another contract to another MACCO on 6700 s block of Western, Well now its found to be the same Pakistani dude, against the rules, How the FUCK does this city do business, the contract procurement office is a SHAM, U are trying to tell me that we don't have ny legit Black owned body shops in chicago, But wait it gets better, in steps Triangle Fabricators, a mexican owned business on 43rd and packers, this guys claim to fame is making sheet metal benches for the wagaons, now get this SHIT, he now is also a body shop vender, he is the one that gets police cars fixed by taking them to Jimmie D's body shop on Western owned by a white guy and in turn Triangle tacks on another 70.00 per hour for the body work, Im not kidding!! And the city is still wasting money on repairing scuffede and cracked bumpers, How much stealing can go on before the Feds step in, we are driving SHITBOX CARS and FOP & PBPA do nothing, Wake up boys and girls, its time for another march on city hall.
