Hey Sports Fans

Big news everywhere!
  • The last time the media was invited inside the Halas Hall auditorium, Jerry Angelo's and Lovie Smith's lips were grim creases as they tried to explain why they shouldn't be fired. Two months to the day later, they were introducing the biggest free-agent haul in team history, and their smiles were so wide they could've eaten Italian beefs sideways.

There are always reasons to be skeptical when talking about free agency, where teams often get Albert Haynesworth instead of Reggie White. But this wasn't a day to be skeptical, not after the Bears signed defensive end Julius Peppers, running back Chester Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna on the first day of free agency Friday.

  • It took 37 seconds for the Blackhawks and the Vancouver Canucks to add another chapter to their growing rivalry.

Andrew Ladd and the Canucks' Ryan Kesler went after each other as expected. And then Shane O'Brien grabbed Ladd. Moments later and before the next faceoff, Canucks agitator Alex Burrows mouthed off to a couple of Hawks, bumped into Dustin Byfuglien and then tried to fight the 6-4, 257-pound winger.

In all, 12 penalty minutes were assessed in the first 37 seconds of a game highlighted by roughing penalties, big hits and two fights. And yes, a hockey game did break out too as the Hawks put a wallop on their rivals Friday night in a 6-3 victory before 22,235 at the United Center.

And of course...

  • Carlos Quentin reminded everybody back in Chicago just how dangerous he can be when he's pain-free.

Quentin homered on his first two at-bats and drove in five runs Saturday, leading a White Sox split squad to a 15-3 victory over the Cubs in the first of five spring exhibitions between the intracity rivals.

It's shaping up to be an interesting Spring and Summer.

Until the masses awake from their slumber of ignorance and apathy; expect much, much more of the status quo.

scc, thank you for the hawks post--- hawks take on the redwings on nbc at 1130 sunday at the uc---- five first period goals made it easy for the hawks to polish off the canucks--- the canucks are a skill team and they are tough to play... the hawks will be hard to beat in a seven game match up--- the only thing that can sink the hawks is injuries--- if we stay healthy, this is our year baby.....

THE BEARS:

Reason to be hopeful.... No guarantees, but we have a much better football team to cheer for today than we did two months ago, including the coaching staff. With Lovie Smith, Rod Marinelli, Mike Martz and Mike Tice, there is now the experience of FOUR head coaches behind the scenes.

THE BLACKHAWKS:

Odds on favorite to be Stanley Cup Champions.... With the valuable experience that this young team gained during last seasons playoff run and last months Olympic medal chase, and the addition of Hossa, Madden and Kopecky, WHY NOT expect a Championship?

THE CUBS AND WHITE SOX:

Too early to say.... Time will tell, but there is no particular reason to think that the Sox are going anywhere, and the Cubs, well enough said on that!

THE BULLS:

Does anyone really care?

If you ask me, bring on the March Madness!

hulet is still shaky in net. the hawks have a great team..but goalie is their weak spot. a great/hot goalie can carry you thru the playoffs. fans will be pissed if the hawks lose in the playoffs due to lackluster goaltending. hulet s record is due to the great team in front of him. could he win 1 game if he played for the oilers? yeah, right.

Any of those new bears play on the offensive line? No? Who exactly is going to keep Cutler clean, so he doesn't freak out and throw a bajillion INT's again? Taylor and Manumaleuna will get some catches, but no help at WR?

Damn, just when it sounded like a true winner you realize that the same QB is going to be starting with the new crew.... oh well

For the Sox, Carlos Quentin could be on his way to regaining and maintaining his All-Star form, IF he can stay healthy.

Cubs will be the Cubs: No matter how bad, no matter how many games they lose, they draw 3M+.

The Bears made some big moves in free-agency. They look and sound like desperation moves, but maybe that is what the organization needs, a fire under its arse.

(Not that it matters: Air-Rodgers and his Golden Receivers are still going to feast on the Bears "pass defense."

And Woodie will add a few picks to Cutler's growing list of INT's.

The experience most teams have had with expensive free agents is not real good. We will just have to wait and see.

Peppers is at the end of his career. He may have a couple of good seasons left in him, and maybe a couple more mediocre ones before he is done.

Taylor probably has a couple of seasons of solid backup running back in him if he is not overused. Expect Kevin Jones to be waived. One of those expensive free agents that was a complete waste. Adrian Peterson has probably seen his last game as a Bear, probably his last season as an NFL player.

My guess is that an existing WR or TE has to go to make room on the roster for Manumaleuna.

Orlando Pace was another dud free agent, and his release will make room for someone to come in. Maybe some castoff from another team they think they can get a good season or two out of, or a flyer of an undrafted player.

Probably only 1 of their everyday starter(Alexei) will not be from here. The cubs will have more foriegners then the sox will.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Baseball is an international game. Who cares where anyone is from. Next year it will be 6-10 different guys on each team. How many guys are left on the Sox from 2005. You are cheering for the uniforms, not who's in them. Go, take your kids, enjoy the games. Better yet go see a college team play.
