Off Duty Police Shooting

  • An off-duty Chicago police officer shot a burglar who broke into his South Side residence this morning, law enforcement sources said.

The officer, who was inside the home when burglars entered the house in the 7600 block of South Vernon Avenue about 9 a.m., shot one of the suspects, the sources said.

Shortly after the shooting, a man with a gunshot wound went to St. Bernard Hospital, and detectives were working this morning to confirm whether that man was the burglar who broke into the officer's home.

We look forward to this being a regular headline once the Supreme Court strike down the handgun ban in Chicago. And to all the commentators over at BreakingNews.com who claim they'd be jailed if they had shot a burglar, nothing could be further from the truth. You might have received a summons and lost your gun in the past, but that was rare in the first place and will cease to occur sometime after June.

Look for J-Failure and Shortshanks to credit CAPS or more "effective" policing for the double-digit drop in property crime for the second half of 2010.

Great job Office! My neighbors are all fired up and can't wait for the Supreme Court to restore their rights!

I've had at least 4 neighbors ask whats the best gun to buy and will the PD provide training. I've been recommending .357 snubs for basic home defense. Simple, low maintenance, great punch, etc....I've also suggested large dogs to hunt 'em down if you only wound them and they somehow flee.

Guns and Dogs....Every free born American's birthright! Even in yankee territory!

‘‘Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.’’

— Thomas Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

That's a great point and one of the reasons I've often thought about not buying a house as the police. I'm stuck myself having bought 7 years ago but I tell alot of new guys on this job to just rent and invest the difference. This way when the gangbangers find out where you live or the news fucks you in the ass by displaying your block and house... you can pack your shit up and rent elsewhere.

Why did he have to shoot them?
They were probably out of work and just tryin to feed their families.
Isn't that what insurance is for?
why?
howcome...

Sorry, I tried to think like a liberal for a few seconds, but I'm just not that stupid.
Nice job officer!

At least four killed last night. Now all the coward gold stars will be called on the carpet and grilled. Not one will have the balls to cite manpower as a factor. D.O.C., DIBS, SST, TRU, MSF,GIPP, CAPS........G.F.Y.

About two years ago, a man in Aurora was suprised by a couple of thugs breaking in his back door. Seeing them in his house, he fired off 2 rounds, sending the two jerks running at a hide rate of speed. Old men tend to keep revolvers, which are not prone to malfunction !

When the SCOTUS overturns the unconstitutional handgun ban, look for burglaries to drop and more criminals to get a cap busted in their a$$. "Turnabout is fair play."

There is such a thing as a 3" barrel revolver. S&W used to offer the K-frame, Model 10/13 and stainless variants,(64/65) and Ruger offers the GP100-.357 cal. These are the best compromise between a snub and a 4" service revolver. The old FBI gun was a 3" K-frame Round Butt Model 13 .357 before the semi-autos took over. Citizens would be well served with these revolvers once SCOTUS blows the ban up Shortys butt.

O/T...

Speaking of shootings and other merry mayhem...

Just wondering about the possibility/feasability of an updated M1927 Thompson SMG fortified to fire .45 +p, .45 Super or even bring back the version that fired the ferocious .45 Remington? (250/260 grain slug at @ 1400 FPS works out to about 1088 to 1130 ft.lbs of muzzle energy or twice the energy of the stoutest commercially available .45 acp +p)

We don't doubt the .45 Remington Thompson was QUITE the attention getter and very effective against vehicle borne riff-raff at typical engagement ranges let alone in alleys & gangways.

As for home defense, any reliable and well maintained mid to large bore revolver or semi-auto does the trick as long as the shooter/home-owner plays their part. Our ideal is a 3in. five shot revolver in heavy loaded .44 Special or .45 Colt. (there was an elderly neighbor who refused to part with a Colt New Service 5in. in .44-40, we hope the son with good sense got hold to it when Pop-Pop went to his reward)

Glad the officer is ok... For shame the offender was not shotified with terminal effect. "Never leave 'em alive to sue you" is what our training officer said... Repeatedly.
