Suicide by Train

  • Embattled Metra Executive Director Phil Pagano, under investigation by his own agency for financial issues, stood in front of a Metra train and was killed this morning in an apparent suicide attempt, officials said.

McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said Pagano left a letter "indicating his intentions" before going onto the tracks near Crystal Lake just after 8 a.m.

"This was an intentional act on his part," Nygren said.

So it probably shouldn't have been called an "attempt."

In any event, we always thought Metra was one of the better run transportation companies. If this guy is committing seppuku over $56,000, one has to wonder what is about to be revealed in the coming days.

That's so inconsiderate; screwing up people's commute to work!

Yup. $56,000 is kind of a nothing, in light of what's been going on in local government the last few years.

Yes, it was probably criminal, but is your LIFE worth $56,000?

There's either something huge behind the $56,000, or this was one decent guy who screwed up and couldn't deal with the guilt.

Very, very sad. His poor family. And that poor trainman, who has to remember this day over and over.

Why can't people just kill themselves in their own homes so other people don't have to deal with it? This will haunt the train engineer for the rest of his life. It's not good for the peace of mind of the passengers either. Police, fire and EMS are used to it. But why put these other people thru it?

Pagano is at least the third high ranking government/political official (Blago's guy, the school chief, now metra chief) to commit suicide in a very short time.. . . . i hope more get the message.

IMO, this is probably just the tip of the iceberg. You can bet there is lots more to come. We also need to see a complete independent investigation and accounting of the RTA, Pace and the CTA as well. It could be verrrrry interesting!

First Scott, now Pagano. Must be a new political tactic.

These guys are dropping like flies. Are they teaching this in business school now? Rip off your company, off yourself? But love the metaphor by Pagano. Death by train. What's next? Weis committing suicide by cop?

The only ones sad are the bottom feeders. The lawyers who can't drain his blood, and the media muckrakers.

Read the entire article before commenting you idiots. Pagano "D-All Aboard" was struck by a Lionel Silver Shadow #6005 on the train layout set up on J-Fleds basement living room carpet!

I think Daley, Meeks,Stroger, Madigan,Beale and Burke ought to form a blue ribbon panel and investigate
if suicide actually stops corruption in local government. They could experiment with suicide and get back to us with the results later.

who appointed this guy? Daley says CTA is federal, but gets to appoint asshole know-nothings like Huberman. So who put this thief there?

Now the train engineer has to suffer, from the camera view inside the train the guy knew he was going to hit this guy but naturally could not stop! For $56,000 you life? Must be more to the story, like daley stole hundreds of millions but remains on the job why?

Jesus H. Christ. If 56G merits suicide by train, Shortshanks and crew deserve Jupiter falling out of the heavens on them.

I agree with 12:09 AM...56k just isn't worth killing yourself over...either he has the (belated) morals of a saint or it's WAY worse...although if you're gonna off yourself, it takes real balls to jump in front of a train.

If any of you are ever thinking of killing your DUMB asses by stepping in front of a train.. be considerate and always put your suicide note and your drivers license in a plastic bag.

Metra is just another patronage haven for the pols. The republicans our of DePage county controlled it for a few years and now the dems have it back. Jobs, f rom engineers to conductors to trackmen are patronage. You need a sponsor.

The guy had been with the agency for over 25 years, and executive director for close to 20.

I'll bet if auditors really start scratching beneath the layer that they're already looking at, they'll find a larger amount of misappropriated funds.

Don't tell me this guy, with a $250,000 annual salary, just started ripping off the taxpayers last year. I'll bet it was much more serious, and he knew it.

Now that he's dead, though, it will probably get swept under the rug. Unless they find shoe boxes full of cash in his closet at home.

No, I'm NOT kidding. My next sentence was: "There's either something huge behind the $56,000, or"

i.e. "there's either MORE MONEY behind the $56,000, or..."

Fire up one or two brain cells before bitching, please.

Fuck this guy for doing this to the poor engineer. Note to assholes who want to traumatize others while you do your selfish thing: There's always the car in the garage and overdose on a bottle of narcotics....you don't have to engage in unsolicited accomplices. I'm sure this will haunt the engineer for quite some time.

Yes indeed, I would bet in the millions over the years, but now this will be swept under the rug like they do at HQ. I feel for the family.

Most suicides are selfish acts and this takes the cake. As Metra chief he should know how this will haunt the engineer and train crew. Fucking moron.

A few years ago Metra and the Union Pacific had an engine and train on display and I got to take my kid in the cab and talk to an engineer who did run over a guy. It takes about a mile for a train to stop and there was no avoiding the man. The engineer had to be in therapy for years.

Pagano is a moron.

Pagano is the worst kind of asshole for committing suicide by one of his own trains.

I'm sure it must be a lot more than $56K for him to do this. On the bright side, Metra isn't spending any more money on his salary.

My sympathy to the train crew who were the unfortunate victims of his selfishness.
