Mugged on Michigan Avenue

  • Here's what went down: I walked up to the bus stop at the corner of Michigan and Grand to take the 151 to my home in Lakeview. I sat down on the black metal railing that fences off one of the large flower gardens, put down my bag of groceries and pulled out my new iPhone to check my e-mail and send a text message to my wife letting her know I would be home soon.

The sidewalk was packed with tourists and shoppers, but I felt a strange energy when a kid, probably about 14, sat down close to me on my left while the guy he walked up with stood on my right. It just felt wrong.

Then, literally in a flash, the kid on my left grabbed my iPhone and tried to bolt. I had heard all of the warnings about people snatching iPhones and iPods, but because the street was so crowded I never thought it could happen there and then.
Did anyone who isn't reading here right now not see this one coming two years ago? Anyone? Bueller? We didn't think so. This is almost a daily occurrence nowadays.

Now imagine you're Bob or Suzie Yuppie without a newspaper column to bitch about being strong-armed in broad daylight on what is one of the top three pedestrian avenues in Chicago.

But here's the kicker - the writer, someone named John D. Thomas - even after getting attacked and knocked around and robbed, manages to get in a dig at police officers!
  • I went after the two kids, still gripping the T-shirt I had torn off one of them. I saw them go east on Ohio Street and I booked it in hot pursuit. When I got to St. Clair, I didn't see them, but my lifetime of watching TV cop shows told me they had sprinted down a dark alley next to the Dunkin' Donuts.
Even though it is Shortshanks that has allowed the number of police on the streets to dwindle to the point where strong arm robbers feel little-to-no hesitation in mugging people in broad daylight on Michigan Avenue, John D. Thomas has to throw in the tired old saw about "Dunkin Donuts" and cop shows.

At least he didn't go with the "poor downtrodden under-privileged youth who don't know what they're doing and I probably deserved to have my personal property forcibly removed from my person" route. That would have been a bit too much.

You see two guys who look like shitheads who are to close to you for now valid reason then you assume they're up to no good. Instead you have people fighting their gut instincts and pretending that all is well. If you are dressed like a thug then I'm going to assume that you are a thug. If he thinks random acts like this are preventable by police, he's a moron and doesn't understand much about much.

A better strategy would've been to preemptively confront the two shitbirds before they made their move- or if that isn't your style, just get the hell out of there and make towards someplace more crowded... Instead, from what I gather, he passively sat there with a 'bad feeling' while he was being surrounded until the inevitable happened.

LOL. What a rookie. Let him blame cops, society-at-large or the man in the moon... It's clear that this guy is still playing in the Bush Leagues as far as Successful City Living goes. Anyone who's earned their "Chicago Stripes" knows that you react to situations like that BEFORE your iphone is running away.

Let him pull his hair and try to blame everyone else for what boils down to his own cluelessness.

Lil’ Teddy O’Queefe from BAS sez:

Hello Folks…it’s me…Lil’ Teddy O’Queefe…Deputy Supt. of BAS.
I read with some interest this post about some poor guy getting robbed in broad daylight. As the money man for the CPD, I have “da mares” ear and I could convince him that we need more police officers and better equipment. I could do that…but I won’t… because when Richie told me that my years of Theology classes in the seminary and my failed career in the priesthood made me eminently qualified to run a whole bureau of the police department, he also said, “Hey, Lil’ Teddy O’Queefe, don’t you be spending’ any money on dees goofs at CPD, save it so my nephew Vanecko gets at least a couple million...OK?”

So do I care if your squad car has 200,000 miles or more on it?
HELL NO! I got my new little Prius Hybrid from the city, and my wife thinks we look pretty good in it when we go out to dinner.

Do I care if the ranks are so thin that we have “99” cars on midnights?
HELL NO! I’m at home sleeping on midnights, dreaming of how to f*ck with people on the CPD!

Do I care about station security?
HELL NO! Those state-of-the-art keypads and cameras are just “for show” anyhow! Who cares if they actually work?

Do I care about anything that doesn’t involve saving money, even if it means more police officers will be injured or die in the performance of their duties?
HELL NO! I just need to show my friend on the 5th floor at “the Hall” that I’m saving all dat cash that could be used to make your jobs easier and safer. Things are tough out here, ya know!

So carry on, all you dedicated officers, but don’t expect any help from me, because I learned in the seminary that it’s all about the money!

I don't think that in this section : "When I got to St. Clair, I didn't see them, but my lifetime of watching TV cop shows told me they had sprinted down a dark alley next to the Dunkin' Donuts." that the important part was "Dunkin' Donuts" but "down a dark alley'. Years of watching cop shows, and common sense, would say if someone disappeared off of the street, to look somewhere else. In this case the alley happens to be near a DD. At least this is how I read it, stop being so sensitive.

The cops refused telling me they were told not to bother the panhandlers. Now, it is rare to see any police on Michigan ave, either on foot or in a car.

The schools are churning out more liberals/victims everyday. The media ignores the obvious. You can reach no other explanation other than the media is totally corrupt. They no longer report the news, they choose to report what they want you to know. The masses sleepwalk through their day.

I second that. It's really the guy's fault for having an iphone. How dare he prance around in his pasty white skin and show everyone how rich and privileged he is because he's white. He was practically daring that poor, misunderstood child of the urban system to take his phone.

If you read the the full story in the Tribune, you can see the victim did struggle with both offenders. The victim grabbed the smaller offender's t-shirt who grabbed his phone. The smaller offender wriggled out of his t-shirt. After the chase the victim (who watched all those tv cop shows) holds the t-shirt ands reads it for clues. But he then gets on his bus and writes his beef to the Tribune. That t-shirt was physical evidence, the DNA on the shirt could be processed by the crime lab. Even if his DNA wasn't in Codis, his older brother, the larger offender, could be the close match that identifies both.

I really don't understand why you think he is getting a "dig" in at the police. Just because he mentioned the words "Dunkin Donuts" you believe that's a dig at the police? He's describing the alley that they ran down, no mention of police. He watches cop shows and knows that the offenders are likely to run down an alley, not that offenders are likely to run down an alley that is near a Dunkin Donuts. He merely describes the location of the alley as being by the "Dunkin Donuts" and that's a dig at the police? Quite a reach.

There's no dig, SCC, you're misreading it. The writer got to Ohio/St Clair, looked north, didn't see the guys. From watching cop shows, he thought to check the alley when he didn't see the guys on the street. The alley going east of off St Clair is next to Dunkin Donuts. It wasn't a cop joke at all. And for the I Phone, who gives a rats ass, not me.

People need to realize that the Animal is around them every moment in Chicago, and they need to wise up and fight back and have a weapon readily available to protect themselves and stop the Animal!

Ask a teacher with those 4% raises or an alderman with those 6% raises to chase down those runts and possibly have a heart attack.

When society changes there
attitudes towards my brothers and sisters in blue, I may change back into warrior mode?

NAH!

*** ATTENTION SCC ****

There really is a Dunkin' Donuts at St. Clair and Ohio Street. I can see if you read the article a certain way, you could infer that the writer was bustin' on the police. However, I read the article and immediately thought the writer was referring to the bad guys running into the alley behind the aforementioned nearby Dunkin' Donuts. I dislike the media as much as you, but I think you got this one wrong. On a side note, I thought it was weird that this writer never mentioned if he filed a report. If he doesn't at least report it, then it never really happened (according to the ASA's). Hence, if we catch these fools later, we will not be able to charge them in this case.

..."I sat down on the black metal railing that fences off one of the large flower gardens,"...

There was a time no so long ago on Michigan Avenue when there was a cop on every corner. There was a cadence to their whistle blowing; you could hear the toots and flourishes go all the way up the Avenue then all the way down.

That's what Shorty has done for the city, replaced the cops with the iron fences and gardens. Those who put in the fences and gardens put money into the right pockets. I guess the cops don't.

And, ..."but I felt a strange energy when a kid, probably about 14, sat down close to me"...

That "strange energy" is called fear.

...As if it's our fault he placed himself in a position to be robbed.

Kinda funny actually...

We could pretty much tell from the way the article was sculpted, that it was written by a manling who never in his adult life had to fight for himself, anyone or anything. His ilk would gasp in horror at the sight of a Policeman going hands on with a resister or vividly tearing an assailant apart.

He would be having a group hug & cry with the offenders if this was on-viewed by the Police and in the ensuing dust-up, the offenders got their asses beat for fighting the R/O's.

J-fled would personally perp walk the responding officers into the MCC before the ink was dry on their federal indictments...

People who are safe, snug and smug should never sit in judgement of those who are charged with keeping them from harm.

If evil endeavors to embrace you, bite it's fucking nose off...

We hope the naive and clueless are visited with even more acts of random, low-brow fuckery.

There have been arrests made for theft by deception because the persons begging for the money did it under false circumstances. In fact at least one of these was approved by Felony Review. Do not trust these people. They are robbed on Michigan Avenue because they have DEMANDED to live in a world where criminals are given everything except justice.

Justice is a social pact. Although I was not robbed on Michigan Avenue, I support punishment of robbers because I am a part of society and I do not want this behavior in my society. At least that is how I used to feel.

The people of Shitcago have torn this social pact to shreds. They do not support justice for victims, they support the social drama of the criminal. In fact, these citizens are willing to give criminals their own tax money to feed the drama. That includes ALL of the citizens, white, black, and other.

Now that the pact is dissolved, I no longer support justice for criminals. Let him be free. Let him have your IPhone. This writer's employer has done nothing but feed bullshit to its readers that all these poor criminals are really innocent and it is the police who are the real enemy. The paycheck the writer got from the Tribune was financed with these bullshit criminal drama stories supplied by personal injury lawyers.

Now the writer can live in the world he helped create. He is not safe. Criminals will again take his IPhone and next time they'll take his groceries too.

The writer has finally gotten the one thing he and his employer have denied victims for decades. The writer got justice.

The alley behind Wilson Park (Windsor/Lockwood, southwest end) has become a favorite after hours hangout spot for some suspicious looking characters.

As always, your presence is very welcome and appreciated. I recall watching once while you patrolled in the area. Some chain laden misfit, baseball hat on backwards, started running down the alley pulling up his drawers as you approached.

People who aren't doing anything illegal have no reason to run from the police.

Maybe you misunderstood me so I'll clarify my post. The mutts are collecting for any number of alleged charities, probably themselves, standing by the door of the store.

Perched by the entrance, they bother shoppers both entering and exiting the store. The panhandlers (do gooders) haven't followed me out to my car ..... at least yet.

Target and Walmart won't allow charities, panhandlers, etc to set up shop in front of their stores. I wish Jewel would follow suit. The Butera at Naragansett/Lawrence doesn't have this problem either.
