We've all listened in varying degrees of disbelief as Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis repeatedly claims that the city's violent crime rate has decreased steadily over the past nineteen (19) months.
The Superintendent claims we live in a safer city and blames the "24-hour news cycle" for over-doing its coverage of crime and violence, especially those incidents when dozens of people are shot during one night or weekend, sometimes several victims on the same crime scene.
Make sure you're sitting down when you read the following look "behind the numbers".
Roderick Drew, the police department's media affairs director, confirmed this morning that when multiple persons are shot during a barrage of gunfire in Chicago it is counted as ONE aggravated battery.
That's right. Only one. That's because a shooting, no matter how many people are hit, is counted as a single incident.
Just last weekend (August 6-8), there were five incidents with multiple victims. The cops counted only five aggravated batteries when in fact over 15 people were injured or killed.
"I can't say why its counted that way", Drew told me.
"Its that way all over the country."
Also, when folks in Englewood, Roseland and other ultra violent neighborhoods hear dozens of gunshots on a hot summer night, the vast majority of the incidents--even those reported to 9-1-1--are not included in the crime stats.
Not only is it against the law to fire a weapon inside the city, the bullets--assuming most missed their targets--are evidence of attempted aggravated batteries or even attempted murders.
But again, nobody's including those obvious crimes in the statistics.
I guess its not nearly as violent out there as people think it is...

That Blago's jury is deadlocked on some of the counts means little in the overall scheme of things. I doubt that the Feds expected a clean sweep even if they hoped for one. If Blago is convicted of many or most of the substantial counts of the indictment, that should be enough to put him away for about the same time as would be if it were a sweep. Who really cares about what he gets in concurrent sentencing. You know that he won't get consecutive sentencing. OTOH, if Blago starts shooting off his mouth (who'd ever think that that idiot would do that), I am sure that the Feds have soooo much more to bring before a grand jury that they can bury the little prick. After all, they've already admitted that they had to jump the gun with a premature complaint so they could prevent him from actually selling off the senate seat. Stranger things have happened, right? I've been a Violent Crimes detective since the fall of '98. Charles Thomas is my neighbor in the south loop. I have spoke to him occasionally during early morning dog walks. He is absolutely wrong about how we count victims. He is the biggest police hater in Chicago media; he also is the police "beat" reporter for Ch 7. He would twist things whatever way he can to knock the police. Don't let your hatred for Jody Weis let you jump into bed with every tramp that comes along. Charles Thomas dislikes you as much as he dislikes Jody Weis. If someone like Paul Meincke had something critical to say about us I would stop and listen. Charles Thomas is nothing but a police hater with a pulpit.

First: Learn how to spell and how to use correct grammar.
Second: Social Security is money we've put in to get back at a later date, it isn't a "social program" unless you didn't put squat in and receive benefits.
I plan on taking whatever I can out of the program from my pre Police earnings, my part time job earnings and the Medicare that has been taken out of my city salary since 1986.

Hate to say it guys, but Rosty's support of the 93 crime bill led to hiring of 500 Chicago Police officers. His fee on persons passing through O'Hare feeds 100 million a year to the city coffers. He saved the sox from leaving for Florida. He helped build this city, thus give plenty of employment opportunities to many. I don’t agree with the taking of our social security, but we benefited in other ways.
