School Begins

Which means a new season of school shootings. And the CPS student body doesn't disappoint:
  • A student was shot near Gage Park High School on Chicago's South Side Monday morning.

The shooting happened in the 2400 block of West 55th Street at about 7:49 a.m., according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez.

The 18-year-old student was reportedly shot in the stomach, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition, Perez said.

The shooting is believed to be gang-related, police said.
Yeah, no shit. Can anyone tell us if this one was in the "predictive analysis" model?

Wow, I thought they caught that serial murderer of all those CPS students! Haven't heard much in a while by the ever-so-caring media who never fail to make a tenuous connection between someone who attend a CPS school for a few days a year and that same person being a CPD student.

Isn't 18 too old to be RETURNING to high school? Not that being left behind, justifies being shot in the tummy.

You know... with all the violence that happens on the south side of Chicago, it's a miracle there are any sane resident left in that area!

The neighborhood schools can't get rid of anybody. Deal dope in a classroom, you'll be back in 2 weeks. Hit a teacher, you'll be back in that class in 2 weeks. Doesn't matter how old -- must keep you till 21 so you can do some statutory rape with the freshman and recruit new gangbangers.

This is the equivalent of holding fireworks on July 3 -- or, as we saw this year, of breaking them up into three separate events.

Mayor Daley is terified of a large segment of the population, whom he knows are uncontrollable. This early-school move is half a cynical sales-booster for the stores -- kind of like Halloween lasting 45 days now -- and half a pathetic attempt to get the "youth" off the street where they're shooting each other and into school where they can shoot each other.

The crowds in the stores grabbing up "school supplies" like they were going out of style due to the "sales tax holiday" are really something. I got out of Target on Sunday; couldn't stand the screaming and pushing and running. Went back tonight, it was a little quieter. (There was no break for me on anything I needed.)

They were scooping up piles of notebooks in every color of the neon rainbow, canisters full of 800 different colors of markers -- nobody writes or draws that much. Nobody. They're txt msging, OMG, LOL. Kids just want this stuff because it's colorful and depicts characters keyed into day-and-night TV marketing. WAAAAA! IwannitIwannitIwannit! MOMMEEEEE!

These are the same ones already getting the free backpacks full of school supplies at the Hispanic-bloc politically-sponsored "health fairs" and "giveaways" at city parks.

These kids -- so many of them obese like their parents -- already have more clothes and shoes and cell phones and Ipods and computers and DVD players and Xboxes and toys and cosmetics than you've ever seen. Go by one of their garage sales sometime; it's like an explosion of plastic junk. The family is on its sixth iteration of cable TV providers, satellite dishes and so forth -- the older (now useless) cable modems, etc. are out there for sale like someone would want them.

Funny kind of "poverty" in these stout brick homes with the seven new cars parked behind the elaborate wrought-iron fence in the newly-paved front yard...

Now let's see you spell.

Perhaps I read it wrong, but I was under the impression the student was a senior. No matter. it would seem that there are various reasons for people to be in school and educated at any age. First of all one would have to be educated to understand there are many students that were drop outs that had to quit to help support their families. I give those who were in this position a lot of credit for having gone back and become productive citizens. Who is to say?

How do "we" know that the 18 year-old was a freshman? The WGN story only lists his age. Usually, depending on birthdate, an 18 year old is a senior and in some cases a junior.

Either you are being funny, or you are a liberal citizen who is not the police. If you were the police you would understand the humor and understand that most 18 year olds in the ghetto are freshmen. Try working here with us and enjoy the comedy show.

Dear Anonymous,

Having never lived in the ghetto or been a police officer, I wouldn't know such things. I am not liberal, nor was I being funny. :|

Thank you for the clarification. :)
