Innocent Victim
For three decades, residents of the Morgan Park neighborhood on Chicago's Far South Side have spent one summer night a year at a local park, laughing, sharing stories and reminiscing about old times.
This was the scene Saturday night when shots rang out at Ada Park in the 11200 block of South Ada Street, claiming the life of one man, injuring three others and sending panicked families racing back to their homes.
"Nothing like this has ever happened at this event, ever," said Janita Walton, 28, a longtime area resident. "The people who got hit, they had nothing to do with it. They were just standing in the wrong spot."
Bend and twist the stats any way you like, but innocent people are getting shot and killed in Chicago this year and it seems a bit more so than the usual numbers. And guess who's using the bloodbath to their own advantage?
"It is incumbent on our community leaders and elected officials to not just shrug our shoulders and say we don't know what to do," said Rev. James Meeks of the Salem Baptist Church, where Buckner attended. Meeks, also a state senator, said fractured families and broken educational systems were largely to blame for the violence so commonplace in some South Side neighborhoods.
"We can't accept this as a way of life," he said, following a Sunday sermon tinged with warnings to the young African-American men and women in his audience.

I love it when the "reverends" have a sermon about the violence. They are literally preaching to the choir. Those responsible for the violence probably aren't at church on Sunday morning. Instead, you have a bunch of 80yr old women in big hats screaming amen, ignoring the fact that their grandchildren and children are to blame.

How about this fractured family that was able to figure it out. My parents divorced when I was 5 or 6. My mother raised 4 boys and 1 girl in a two bedroom apt. We ended up on food stamps. Blah, blah blah. My mother found a job and one way or another all 5 of us graduated H.S. with no arrests. 4 became Chicago Police Officers and the last became a "mustang" in the USMC and retired as a Lt. Col. Screw fractured families...nobody gave us anything, we did it ourselves. Now the real bottom line is we are regular and all have the same problems everyone else does. We are not any better than anyone else here. But we turned out ok! And she received assistance until the older kids started to work. Possibly a couple of years. Its a mentality and no one will own up to it..including the reverends!
Well said, I hope someone sees that post and directs one of those Revs to read it. Not that it matter if one of them happens upon it, something tells me they won't see it the way we do...

One news outlet is reporting that THE GANGBANGERs posted in Facebook that they were going to shoot up Azd PARK. Hours in advance. And somebody called police. Hours in advance. Nothing. Couldn't predict one they hand too you?

maybe, if they'd run the story before the event began, the 'community' could have taken care of their own problem.
after all, it takes a village....
yeap, they called the police and warned them about the shootings that were about to happen. and the police did what they could on a district level, detailed 4 cars there. and the gangbangers shot anyways with the police present, so what. we know they'll shoot with weiss present. what gets me is the people showed up. you tell me the park is gonna get shot up and i'm staying home, and making my kids stay home. now how many off duty/security people did the promoters of the event provide, or did they think to cancel since word was out 12 hours earlier. nope they let it happened and now they can blame the police. and of course the commander is expected in j-fleds office at 0900 this morning.
the facts...the pols will never come down hard on violence in the black community. you dont want to anger a large voting block. you dont want to be viewed as punishing ''society s victims''. we throw tons of $ at the problem with little results. the struggle to join the rest of civilized society continues.

The police were at ADA Park when the shooting started. They concentrated on the basketball courts where the gangbangers were hooping it up. The gangbangers saw this and reevaluated their plan and struck by the family barbecue. They did not care about police presence or the family function. Arm yourselves and be prepared for the young tribesman.
Surprising. How about the crack heads and drunks in the vacant lot at 1626 w monterey right by the police station. Passed out on couches, drinking the 40'S, playing cards on milk crates, pissing while we drive by after leaving our homes a mile away for work to get on the expressway. Even nicer for the kids to see everyday. Mommy and Daddy, why is that guy sleeping on a couch outside? Look at that guy peeing? Don't worry kids, we live in a nice neighborhood. 022 just drives by. Let's just move them a mile down to our blocks. They will be there soon enough anyway.

You know those horrible black "old-fashioned" streetlights the city's been putting in everywhere -- the ones that are so big they're grotesquely out of scale? (The kind of turn-of-the-century light they're roughly modeled after was less than half that size.)
The things have a great big heavy-LOOKING "cast iron" base, very substantial, right?
Ha. I leaned on one last night -- AND I FELT IT MOVE!
I couldn't believe it -- so I stepped back and gave it a kick. The whole base moved over about three inches, exposing a black ring on the sidewalk where it had been!
That's not a base, it's just an unnecessary decorative thing that fits around the light pole! You can see that it's made in two halves, and you can spot the screws that hold it together.
What is this s__t? Plastic? Is this what the Mayor has put us $650 million into debt for?

4No one wants to say what the problem really is with these people. It is simply a cultural thing where these people look up to "thugs" and street cred and all that other bullshit. If some kid in school tries to study and take advantage of the educational opportunities, he is looked down upon and said to be "acting white" or some such crap. Another possibility, however remote, is that level of lead in the paint of the ghetto homes causes a rise in violence for those living in them. There has been a direct correlation between lead paint and violence in numerous studies. But if that is a factor I'm sure it's very small. What I do know is that broken families, no strong father figure and a lack of morals will keep this group at the bottom of society until they themselves decide to pick themselves up by their own bootstraps and make changes to their cultural of failure.
Now they want us to be the police. They need us to be the police. I say bwahahaha!!!! Get in yo' Jaguire rev'run and patrol your flock.

On WJYS (62.1, 62.2 & 62.4), excluding Meeks' July 4th telecast, I can honestly say the number of times I heard Black Chicago preachers talk about public safety and morality is zero.
William Bryant spoke out, but his church is based in Naperville .

It's ironic that the police haters Jackson, Rush and Phleger wind up calling up the police today, while condemning them yesterday.
How about the "mayoral advisor Pat McClain" who nobody knows about who lives in brigeport who also has a "driver" to take him wherever he wants to go. Funny, he even had his C.P.D. driver drop him off at lollapalooza. No money except for Dickie, his family, and everyone else he chooses. Is Pat McClain a security risk also even though nobody knows him. His driver at one point got a DUI in canaryville off duty and stayed on the mayor's" friends and family" security detail after hitting an innocent family. Unbelievable!!
