- A convicted felon accused of disarming and killing Chicago Police Officer Thor Soderberg was indicted today on 250 felony charges in the slaying, including murder and armed robbery, officials said.
In court, Cook County prosecutors announced that a grand jury indicted Bryant Brewer on first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, armed robbery, robbery and resisting and disarming a police officer, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Prosecutors haven't yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty against Brewer, 24, who they say accosted Soderberg in the parking lot of a police facility at 6120 S. Racine Ave. on July 7.
We'd really hate to see this devolve into a circus.

I'm with you on this, SCC. 250 counts sounds like a whole lotta overkill on this one. Let's just stick to the Murder, Disarming, and Armed Robbery and leave it at that. A conviction on all three counts will satisfy the hell out of me, and I won't even be pissed at Alvarez for tossing aside the other 247 counts without asking me if it's ok. And let's not drag this trial out for years either.

This is Cook County he'll be eligible for parole when the dust settles anyway, the ASA's will work out a deal, the judge will say there were mistakes in the case, and 7th circuit will award him a large sum due to the anguish he has endured at the hands of evil Polices.
The system is broken in Crook County and the City is destined to fail. And I will do nothing more than write a report about it, because you finally got what you always wanted; the kinder, gentler, warm, fuzzy Police who no longer give a F*ck about anything but going home.

As a member of Soderberg's class, 09-2B I don't have much else to say but Illinois better do right here and give this guy what he deserves. The plethora of counts the DA now throws at this animal is really, frankly, acting stuipidly.
There is all but one clear cut count of cold, blooded murder that should send the murderer to the gas chamber in lightening speed.
At this point, to pile on count after count after count is an insult in so far as the murderer should never been out on the street to begin given all the counts in the past that the DA did apply or which the animal did not serve time on.
I have no specific knowledge that the murderer was known by the police for most of his adult life by virtue of crimes he committed. But, its a pretty good bet he had, given law-abiding citizens don't go killing cops in cold blood.
And even in the galatically unlikely event this was a one-off act on the part of the animal because he lost his job at the post office, it's still pretty simple. You take a life in flat out cold blood, you lose yours.
I hope the DA feels real good about all those counts.
I wonder if they know or even care how stupid and impotent it makes them.
Here again, there is one count alone that should send the murderer to be judged by g-d all mighty.
If there was ever a case for a swift execution after this animals day in court, this case and the case of the other slain officers is the text book case for the death penalty.
Until the DA, politicians and the do-gooder public are prepared to make the punisment for crime comensurate with the crime, crime will increase and those clearance rates will decline.

Went to personnel for some business, knew who I was supposed to go see but was denied access by the receptionist! I had to be "escorted" to the desk. IN POLICE HEADQUARTERS, I HAD TO BE ESCORTED BY A CIVILIAN!

250 charges really speaks to the political nature of the State's Attorney's Office. Back in the day, Tom Epach could have charged on 6 offenses and gotten a conviction on all 6. Now we just have posers who act tough but aren't. What a shame.

The district was busy with 1A jobs and this "PPO" tact dude can transport his arrestee to the district BUT has to sit for two hours for someone to transport his prisoner less than 3 miles to the Area?

It's a high security facility remember.
I went up to the fusion center to uh, get fused I guess, and to pick up a lawsuit, and the only classified activity I saw was seeing them booking airline flights and scouting vacations and real estate on the computers instead of watching crime conditions. Of, there were a few computers tuned to a street web cam. Just no one was looking at them. They were busy with flights, vacations and real estate, and emails.

I keep reading about the killer's mental health status. In recent years, I have given less and less credence to ghetto dwellers with disabilities. Most miraculously find a doctor to give them a diagnosis in order for them to collect SSI benefits. After the initial diagnosis, they are never re-evaluated or monitored. Most have diagnoses that the majority of people with the same ailments manage to live normal lives with (including stable employment). Only in the ghetto can a moderate health condition warrant full disability benefits. After awhile you begin to see trends while processing offenders. There are thousands on SSI for "asthma." How bad can it be when you don't ever use the inhaler you are prescribed month after month, year after year and smoke blunts from morning to night? As far as mental illness, many of these diagnoses are the result of drug-induced psychiatric issues that will resolve themselves if the offender stops using. Or, they act a fool, pimp the system, to get benefits, when in fact there is not a freaking thing wrong with them. So, mental status, is something that needs to be fully explored and verified by an impartial and credible physician. Most of the doctors in the ghetto are not much better than the reverends when it comes to plying their trade.

I'm just curious, for all the complaining about too many counts - which counts would you all charge? If it was your case? The simplest shooting homicide is easily 9 counts.
Then you have all the felony murder counts. Then all the aggravating factors (that you need to plead if you ever want to get to a death hearing).
There are plenty of good reasons to complain about the ASA Office, but this one isn't...
