Months away from an expected re-election bid, Mayor Richard Daley pushed his police superintendent front and center today on the vexing issue of crime.
Murders have dropped sharply the past two decades, yet fear of crime remains high amid the daily violence in Chicago. At a Tuesday news conference, Daley put police Superintendent Jody Weis on the spot when asked about the disconnect.
"Ask him," said Daley, who then stepped away from the microphone.
Weis dutifully took his place at the lectern, the fourth day in a row he has stood before reporters as the Daley administration tries to quell public concern in the wake of three separate slayings of police officers. A Chicago Tribune/WGN poll last month showed nearly half of respondents living in the city think crime is getting worse and nearly 7 in 10 said crime is hurting the quality of life.
Our perception is that:
- the mayor is running again;
- J-Fled is earning his one-year extension;
- the mayor is running scared for the first time in a long time.

The mayor should run hard & fast & get out of shanksville. He should take J-fled with him.
Oh for the olden days when we could tar & feather their behinds and toss them on the next train leaving chicago.
The Mayor would indeed be a prime time fool to offer or sign J-Fled to a one year extension, and he knows it. It's not certain that Shortshanks is running again, but one thing is certain: Daley knows he won't win with a Police Supt. who is worthless in the eyes of the public in keeping its citizens (including his dwindling numbers of police officers) safe. Watch for the media to start polling the public as to their confidence level in J-Fled. Can't wait to see the results of that one. How about it Fran? Carol Marin? Frank Main? Who is going to roll up their sleeves and get to work to see how disgusted the public is with how Weis is managing crime and directing the meager resources left of this once-great Department?
This February 2011 election is getting more and more interesting as the weeks fly by....

The article also describes j-fled as the head of cpd and emergency management. It does not mention that j-fled was relieved of his emergency management duties soon after he was hired but still collecting a salary for both positions. Either it was a reporter not fact checking or trying to portray our fearful leader as something that he is not.

Jody looked cool as a cucumber only when the mayor left.The difference is that the mayor knows he is fucked with this guy, and J-Fled actually believes in the bullshit he shovels. He has no idea what is happening around him as the support that he once enjoyed from the misguided citizens is erroding fast as they now dare to publicly question his bullshit FBI stats. The only people that really support this guy now are the gangbangers who are having a field day as he persecutes working coppers. CASE IN POINT- Saw some coppers with a sergeant actually begging two full sized older gang thugs to leave. They were bigger than any cop out there,emboldened and talked shit challeging the coppers on their way out. Cops looked like yuppie college kids begging 2 Rodney King's to leave their frat house.They should put begging and pleading on the TRR's. bawhahaha... The NATIONAL GUARD had a huge contingent of officers and guardsmen that made CPD look like the iraqi rag tag police department. How ironic that the GUARD was there in uniform looking great and the kids loved them as CPD presence was weak and most were out of uniform hiding from J-Jag. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

I have watched this police department for almost 50 yrs.,and just recently retired with more than 30 yrs. of service. Never in my memory have I seen a time where we have three police officers murdered and nobody in custody. Consider that we have the SOS officer shot in the parking lot of his residence, the officer shot while in an arguement with his former girlfriend (she was also murdered) and the most recent murder of an officer also at his residence. The public has every reason to be concened and angry.
Why won't these sheep reporters ask Shortshanks & Jfled how many people have actually been shot this year?!! That's the real question. We all know when 8 future doctors/atronauts get shot there's only 1 rd# generated. So when Jfled says don't worry cuz homicides are down there is still that 8 ton elephant in the corner(even bigger than his mongoloid head)

I was in KB's academy class and we didn't have enough time on to take the Sgt's test. I don't know who's job it is to verify that she didn't take the test but PLEASE do.

Like so many others, James was emotional following the shooting death of Taylor Police Corporal Matthew Edwards. She worked for the hospital organization that treated the police officer and the shooting suspect, Tyress Mathews.
Chicago has the best trauma centers in the country,quite possibly the world.The doctors here get enough practice,they don't need fake dummies because the doc's get enough real dummies to work on!!!!

The best scenario is JFleds contract doesn't get renewed and Shanks either loses the election or just dies like his old man did. That would at least put light at the end of the tunnel.

I keep seeing this "crime has dropped in the past two decades" stat, but what about in the past 7 years, when the reductions to the police force have really happened. One thing I've learned is that if the period of time being reference is long, then recent history is probably pretty bad.
