Echoes of Ike?

  • Ald. Helen Shiller (46th) is the first Chicago aldermen to publicly declare her decision not to seek re-election. But, she won't be the last.

Political retirements, promotions and mayoral ambitions could cost the City Council nearly one-third of its 50 members. And that's not counting incumbent aldermen who could be tossed out by the voters.

Sources said at least eight more sitting aldermen may not run next year to avoid an anti-incumbent tidal wave sweeping the nation and a local electorate livid about everything from the parking meter mess, service cuts and corruption scandals to rising crime and property taxes.

Among those rumored not to be running?
  • Ginger Rugai (19th), Jim Balcer (11th), Frank Olivo (13th), Ed Smith (28th), Vi Daley (43rd), Pat Levar (45th), Mary Ann Smith (48th) and Bernard Stone (50th)
Bunches of big fat anti-incumbent targets there. It's going to take a lot of research to weed through those who do decide to run to see if they're plants by Shortshanks and the exiting aldercreatures to maintain the Machine stranglehold on local politics.

Maybe we can sneak in a few of our own?
He's running for Schiller's seat.
Levar's spot.

Nominating petitions start popping up 24 August.

Helen managed to piss off just about everyone in her ward except for the whack jobs and drug addicts.

Her comments on the street violence in the Sheridan/Leland area sealed her fate.

She won't be missed. Here's hoping her buddy, Two-Ton Smith a major Police Hater goes also.

Even Brian the Drunk has to watch his ass this time out.

Shiller's leaving because she sucks. She finally has residents in her ward that are demanding better from her. She can't and won't do anything about the violence in her ward, so it's easier to just get out and let (hopefully) Mike Carroll deal with her mess.

It's time to get rid of 5 alderman's seats and put the aldermen in the 25 Police Districts. This move alone would save tens of millions of dollars alone in alderman's budgets and salaries.

Put them in the CAPS office with one P.O. as a liaison. City services and the long arm of the law in one building.

You get a bunch of P.O.s back out on the street, it solves the problem of alderman's areas gerrymandering all around and we can keep the alderman legit. It's a win-win situation.

But more importantly WE NEED TO GET OUT AND SUPPORT THEM AND HELP THEM GET ELECTED.

Hey 2 yr wonder you have a very good idea. But you will need to collect more then 100 names to get it put onto the ballot. It will take a lot of planning and organizing to help get it done. You will need to get people to go door to door, block by block thru the whole city to get enough. Trust me when I say I will do my part as a member of the CFD because I probably collected more then anyone else the last time. Ask John. Me and him sat down at talked at leghth about it. We couldn't even get the 2 unions to help because both Ex Boards are too afraid to piss off the Mayor.
If there is a grass root effort I will be there. But a good number to start with is 1000 people out to COLLECT the names that will be needed.

What's behind the story? Shiller knew she couldn't win. She did internal polling and the numbers weren't in her favor. Her campaign manager said he wouldn't manage her if she ran this time.

The gangs in Uptown have no fear. Ald. Shiller famously said "Crime is not my issue," and her son sues 23rd District police officers. There've been two murders and a boatload of of mid-day shootings right outside of her aldermanic office, which she refuses to mention. When there were street riots last year, and the videotape played on every news station in th city and on CNN, she said it was orchestrated by her political enemies and that the riots were simply "attempted fisticuffs."

She helped pay for the funeral of one of the Ali boys, famous gangbangers from 920 Lakeside.

She's toast and she knows it. That's the story.

As the dead of St. Johannes are finding out, you're not even safe from these people when you're in your grave in another county. The motherf__ers will dig you right back up again if they think there's a penny to be made -- and rip down half the town, too.

They'll not only do fine "on the outside" -- it's not like they're going to throw out the address book with all their connections when they leave -- but there'll be 500 more just like them lined up around the block to take their places.

It was my honor to collect the petitions. However, with a "full plate", I will not be able to do it again any time soon. And yes, CFD FF, I do know how to find you after you and a certain lady P.O. virtually tied for collecting about a thousand signatures.

I would like to make a suggestion as to possible referendums that could dramatically affect the corrupt political stranglehold on Chicago. Obviously, you, all eligible friends and relatives should be registered to vote. VOTE!

In order of importance, it is my opinion that the following should be priorities for referendums:

(1) TERM LIMITS (2) for ALL elected officials,

(2) a RECALL REFERENDUM INITIATIVE

(3) Finally, based upon official 2000 U.S. Bureau of Census population figures for the nation's three largest cities, I'd recommend that based on extrapolation and the size of their respective city councils (in parentheses), the City of Chicago should have only about SIXTEEN (16) [NOT 25 and certainly not 50] aldermen.

POPULATION (Number of City Council Members)

New York City 8,008,278 (51)
Los Angeles 3,694,830 (15)
TOTAL (NYC + LA) 11,703,108 (66) or one per 177,320 population. Currently, the mean population by Chicago ward is only 57,920 people.

Chicago 2,896,016 (50)

Several cities including Chicago were given a federal grant to research predictive software. There are a lot of private sector companies using various types of predictive software, usually for sales.

Chicago is exploring (early, early stages, research only) predictive software that learns from past incidents and creates indicators of crime.

Go ask Brett Goldstein who is working on the project with Commander Lewin.

Oh by the way these two are partners in a company that develop predictive software.

Sounds like an ethical issue here, or maybe even criminal. I'm sure city time and resources are being used to develop software they will surly claim to be "Proprietary" and sell to the city at a comfortable profit.

Levar has done nothing for his ward. NOTHING. 6 Corners has been a mess for years. Portage Park has become a gang-banging paradise. Section 8 springing up all over the place along with the crime.

What about all the stabbing, shootings and beatings that are classified as agg batts. The victim then dies of their injuries weeks or even months later. Are these re-classified as homicide or death investigations. 300 murder's in chicago as of today's date seem very low. There is a cover up going on and it starts at the TOP!

8/03/2010 07:29:00 PM

Lately; homicides have been classified "death investigations" so the media doesn't report a murder for that day. Crime is continually the victim of murder.
Justice is a mere "missing person".

portage park has been a gang banger paradise for quite some time as well as the southeast end of 016.... garrido is good people but what is he going to do to reduce crime.... some of the coppers on the third watch in 016 make an honest effort everyday because i hear the bullshit on zone 1 every night---- but if you want to address the problem you flood the area with police and make it uncomfortable for these assholes to hang around these areas--- 016 doesn't have the manpower to handle portage park or the foreman high area or any other hot spots in the district.... any beat or rapid guy will tell you this.... garrido gets my vote if he can pool the manpower where people pay taxes and take care of their property, not shipping working coppers out to the ghetto to fuck with the shitheads.....

Released without charging. That's when the ASA(assistant state's attorney) doesn't have the balls to charge someone because if the case goes to trial, they might loose. And God knows how we all hate loosers!

Usually the victim is "bad" - previous arrest record, drunk at time of crime, junkie, etc. Anita & her crew are spineless.

Case in point - guy wanted for murder on Magnolia last week was previously charged with Agg battery to p.o., attempting to disarm a p.o. and drugs. Guess what he got? BOOT CAMP! And the best part? The victims/officers were never informed of this!

OFF TOPIC - However, recent events have proved to be of greater concern. It is my understanding that Officers involved in recent shootings on the South Side were ordered by Bosses to give an audiotaped statement to IPRA. IPRA has decided to bypass any roundtable and instead, has chosen to initiate a CR# and tape an oral statement. Can we please get verification or clarification of this matter, Officers should not have to be forced to do such things under great duress, especially in light of the Cozzi case and subsequent court decsiions.

I would think guys with those credentials could land a chief's job or another sworn position, but I guess that's the best they can do.

Oh by the way these two are partners in a company that develop predictive software.

Sounds like an ethical issue here, or maybe even criminal. I'm sure city time and resources are being used to develop software they will surly claim to be "Proprietary" and sell to the city at a comfortable profit.

There is a great candidate running for alderman in the 41st Ward. Maurita Gavin has been Doherty's ward secretary for 14 years. She's west side Irish (St. Angela), her brother is a CPD officer in 024. I've known her for 35 years. She's a great neighbor, the most honest and decent person I've ever known. Widowed at 38, her husband Pat worked for the Water Dept for 20 years. She's worth supporting, regardless of your feelings for Doherty.

If she's west side "Irish" why doesn't take one for the team and give back to the community where she was raised? The 29th Ward needs bold leadership and Ms. Gavin would make more of a difference there than in the Fightin' 41st. If anyone can turn Austin around, it's a St. Angela graduate.

I hope that those dogs are trolls and not cops. I don't know him but he's a copper so I'll send his campaign office a check. Hopefully I'll have to send alot of campaign offices checks. Hopefully alot of copers and fireman will run for office and whether we like them or not, we can put our personal feelings aside and finally do what needs to be done. Maybe then we'd have enough numbers to get rid of some of these bosses and demand guidelines for merit promotions.
