But WTF, Carothers gets a pick and Roman gets pick. Lets get real, new commander Carothers selection gets a pick over all the the other commanders choices. And lets not forget Roman, a retired sergeant who is a civilian commander selection was the deserving of the the final 9. Just f***ing ridiculous.

As a detective in HGS I can say I have dealt with both specialized units as well as po's in districts.

It is my humble opinion that the Sup really dropped the ball with only 1 district merit pick.
Really, 1 unit (189) narcotics got 33% of the entire merit spots on this list?

My hat is off to every hard working copper. Your work doesn't go unnoticed by me.

It all makes sense. They had to make J-Fleds driver a Sgt so he can take the Open Sgt spot in the policy group. Oh wait. That list hasn't come out yet. Sorry Ray Ray
and what's with commanders nominating people that don't work for them? ANGARONE is a good guy but isn't there ANYONE in 018 who deserves a bump? Don't even get me started on Carrothers. Did he even have time to put together a merit package before the merit deadline?

Brand new commander Carothers is able to pick a meritorous sgt? Amazing. They ignore all of the other senior and veteran exempts and let Carothers have a selection. This is complete clout. Carothers and downtown ernie brown are connected by the tailbone. I bet Charles Brown will work 007 and follow carothers as he is promoted. Hard work really is the message here.

Unit 189 is a do nothing unit???????? That comes from a blue shirt who has never even been on tact. 189 knocks a ton of work out and brings in cash for the dept. 189 seizures of cash and dope burry any other unit or dist in the dept.

FA from 189 is one of the best Police Officers you will ever meet and work with (I do work in 189. FA is not on my team). The working police got a merit spot, PERIOD!!!!!!

YT from 189 is nice person and good police officer. I don't know if she is merit worthy but she is not a dog. I say congrats!!!!

I don't know the other merit from 189.

I think the real question is O'grady??? Does he go up??? He has three of his people (he wasn't any other their sponsers) get merit. That either speaks volumes for his unit or how heavy it is. Since O'grady has taken over 189 the productivity has gone up.

I do agree with everyone complaining about Carrothers pick getting a spot. A new commander should not even get a pick. Somebody from he Mayor's detail shouldn't even be eligible.

I won't say anything bad about any of the officers promoted. I say congrats and good luck. Most importantly always remember where you came from!!!!

I don't usually pay too much attention to what the dumbfucks downtown do, but you mean to tell me Fuckshanks appointed a fucking patrolman to a Commander, and put him in charge of how many fucking people? 8 or 9?

So Dickhead Daley just doesn't feel important enough without making an exempt spot for a fuckin' patrolman to be in charge of a handfull of suckass putzs?

This HAS to be a "Commanding Officer" spot, and with that, who the fuck says this fuckin' patrolman is qualified to dictate who should be promoted?

Off Topic, but worth mentioning:

A thought just occurred to me - do you remember the infamous "warriors" e-mail that Dugan sent to his exempts in the Bureau of Patrol? The one where he challenged them to be warriors and take back the streets? Now that he's been dumped, he has a perfect opportunity to become a "warrior" himself. How much of a warrior can you be at O'Hare Airport, especially since they created a lieutenant's position there for you, and you're barely there anyway? Some WARRIOR you are, Danny Boy.

A patrolman (Roti) and a retired Sgt. (political hack, former Townsend secretary, Roman)and a three time merit himself (Carothers) all get merit picks. Only one district law enforcement DC gets a pick (and you can lay odds was told who to submit). Merit is the biggest joke on this dept.

Snelling, Larry, is a great pick. About time that man got what he deserves. Every recruit who came out of the academy during the Snelling's era would definitely agree. One of best instructors and one the most dedicated to his work. It's unfortunate for future recruits who will not experience the Snelling welcome to the gym, oh wait there are no more recruits coming so it doesn't matter. Congrats to Snelling again.

Whoever posted this is a complete MORON!

You don't make a deal to lose Deputy money, to make Sgt. Most guys on the Mayors Bodyguard detail make upwards of $150,000 a year.

Asshat why don't you post your resume and DeDore can post his. I think you will be embarrassed.

Will Torres is a good selection. He is a former U.S. Marine and was tested under fire, being shot on this job and killing the offender in an ensuing gun fight.

That said, wasn't he awarded merit Detective for his bravery? I'm just saying...

I hate the merit process in general, but am at least glad to see Joe Salemme nominated someone of high caliber. Unlike many of the others, who nominate those who, many times, are very undeserving!

I guess all the DeDore's have been taken care of. Time to move on.

I'll say one thing. The transparency provided by showing everyone's sponsor has definitely given us a new wow factor. I mean WOW.

Again, just one schmuck from patrol. That is simply amazing considering that is where most of these new Sgt.'s will go.

I know it's like beating a dead horse but how does Roti's guy get made? I mean I know how but Jesus Christ.

Just another kick in the balls to anyone out there working. And considering the working climate this city/department should take care of anybody that still sticks their neck out.

And I'm not some bitter blue shirt. I'm happy where I'm at and will never take another test.

Just another sad day for many.

My God....Carothers just got into the seat, and his pick sailed through? That's it. There is no respect left in this Dept.

And J-Fled's driver? Of just over 4 months or so? I guess he received the 'nod' for whisking J-Fled away from Englewood on that fateful "J-Fled" night! Way to go
Floyd!! That promotion is worth (over time) even more than a taxi driver MEDALLION!

Seriously, we are no longer a respectable dept., but I'm sure everyone knows that by now... And one question remains...where has 'Rick Flair" been all this time? Anybody have the answer to that? Haven't seen the Blond Mopper around in ages...

Let's see...Larry Snelling. He's been in the academy for what....over 10 years as a gym instructor? I'm calling it now..he'll be on the streets less than a year and somehow find another sweet gig for another 10. Mr. tuff guy himself.

If Larry spends some time on the streets, the youngbloods in the Districts will greatly benefit from it. If he's called back to the Academy, the future hires will greatly benefit from it. From where I stand, it's a win-win situation for the Dept. Snelling won't do any worse than the P. T. instructor from years ago at the Academy who was promoted to Sgt. eventually died a bust out crack addict only weeks after being forced to retire to spare the Dept. any further embarrassment.
Snelling is an honorable dude who's done a great job at the Training division who won't embarrass the job. How many people can we say that about today?

Funny how people who dont even know Snelling are making negative comments about him. It's not where he ended up but it's where he's been. He's a former Englewood Ranger who work tact. Hell of an officer who took a leave and came back. upon his return, because of his knowledge and physical fitness they kept him at the academy. Perfect fit dont you think? A person who has worked the street and who is at least 40, can run circles by the majority of officers. Thats the guy you want training recruits!
This is what merit was made for. Not for the guy who has spent 15 years in the district and has wrote 10 tickets a month and now he deserves a spot because he is from the district.
Congrats Larry

It is truly shameful that what use to be a proud and respected Department has been ripped to pieces by politicians, reverends, feds and other political hacks. All their meddling has completed eroded the morale of the core of this Department (Patrol). Just looking at the merit selection reveals that there was a lot of undue influence by non department entities. I am sad and worried at the direction this Department is heading.

For all u cowards talking smack about Larry Snelling, I would love to see you cowards tell him all this to his face, wait....you won't tell him to his face cuz you're all a bunch of cowards. Larry was my home room intrsructor when I came on the job. Yeah he's been in the academy for 10 years or so but from what I hear, he was a legend in 007 before he went to the academy. Good pick by Tobias. And to that coward with the "tuff guy" comment about Larry, ur the biggest coward of them all talking you're smack on here, you're a computer tuff guy. Congrats Larry.

8/13/2010 10:17:00 PM"

This has nothing to do with anyone being scared of your boy. who said anything about fear? You see, the street copper, for the most part, doesn't know what fear means anymore. Sure we may fear for safety of our families, our pensions..stuff like that. But the STREET cop doesn't fear saying what you have to say to anybody's face. It comes with working the streets. This man is a good guy..no doubt. Always helped recruits and all that. But his merit didn't come from getting shot, saving a life or making the arrest of the year..it came from being in the academy for 10 years and having a call. This department is truly a joke.

I just can't choose who to turn against first, Weis or Daley these days.

Don't get too upset...there are two Commanders on the Mayor's Detail. Dedore left and the plan was to put him in. No one can make anything from the Mayor's Detail. They have to leave...we knew this a long time ago about Jack! Good Luck!

I know the merit hacks are just that......... There is one on this list that isn't. And the one being screamed about alot here........ Charlie Brown Unit 153...... Recommended by Carothers. I worked with Charlie for 5 years in SOS, and he is the working mans Police. Clout, who knew? He never spoke of it, he never said a word, he worked hard if not harder then most. Bringing in a ton of pinches, good ones, not bullshit...... Always a gentleman and built like a brick shit house.... If anyone had your back it was Charlie. He speaks in a whisper for being 6'7, never took his size as an advantage. He was always fair on the street, and measured himself in every situation. He IS the POLICE. The soul patrol Charlie remember that?? LOL.... Congrats dear friend. I am happy you are wearing the stripes now!

When I saw the list it made me smile for one reason, Charlie Brown. He was an awesome partner and is the "Gentle Giant". Always there to back up other Officers and did his job to the fullest. Going above and beyond ALWAYS!!!!! Congratulations Charlie you have always been blue and blue all the way through!

To all of the "I am never testing again because...blah blah blah."

I hope you don't.

Being a Chicago Police Officer is a career choice. It is one of only a few careers in the world that allow any employee to earn a promotion through a test. But first, it has always been "the job." A job to support your family and yourself. Never forget it. There is a difference between being dedicated to a job and knowing why you are doing it. If you are so smart and clever, then you should be taking every test. Every time. Your so-called pride does not increase your pension, pay, or ability to change things. Getting promoted might someday - even if it is the City of Chicago.

Their was only one merit pick from Patrol. That is amazing. POs working the beat cars get the shaft again! Three merit pickes from 189 is a disgrace. I don't begrudge the merit selections. God bless them! However, the lack of merit selections from Patrol shows a lack of transparency. Congratulations to Larry S. He is a class guy.

period.

8/13/2010 05:28:00 PM

And being shot is a good reason for being merit, not because you drive J-Fuck around or get the mayors wife milk. And no I don't know Torres but I been around long enough to know being shot should deserve some merit! Period

8/13/2010 09:35:00 PM

Being shot means you got shot. Period. Should you get taken care of ? Of course. But a sergeant has to know what he is doing in the field. Being shot ain't gonna answer some po's questions on a job.

8/13/2010 10:52:00 PM
I was in a shooting where I wasn't shot. Since when is getting shot a badge of honor. I thought we were taught NOT to get shot.

8/13/2010 10:46:00 PM

I have been in shootings too. I'm not saying it should be automatic to get merit Sgt. The point was he should be rewarded over the do nothings that everyone else on this blog is bitching about. I don't know any of these picks but like others have stated why are do nothings, J-fleds driver and the mayors guard detail getting merit spots. Do you want them answering P/Os questions or supervising them. Hell No!

To the guy who said Jack made his bones in 010...

Ok, I usually don't read this thing and almost never post anything here but I have to say something. There somewhere is the makings of some anti-010 sentiment. I've been a policeman for 32 years and the Marquette District has always had great cops. Snethen? Marquette alum. Denny Keane? 10th District warrior. Anyone whoever went to Br. 66 (you kids will find out that's Murder/Rape court) knows the names Dedore, Jack S., Buzzy, 6-foot, Slick and Smoothe. Dickie and The Hammer were like utility infielders: they could do it all, CSA or Crim trespass. Commanders JAK, DK, and DC-CCG JK are all from that breed. No Serpico bullshit, never any hint of wrongdoing, just lock the bad guys up and spin a few at My mistake.

None of you would have the stones to say anything to these guys faces. Lay off the bullshit. Pick on the hacks (and they're on the list) who don't deserve stripes. And get over yourselves.

How in the fuck can you even say this considering the 3 officers that have been killed just this summer. These officers fought for their lives and lost that day. So the officers that are shot on this job and survive should be taken care of for the rest of their careers. Why don't you come down to the academy and talk to Mike Lappe or better yet just see him walk around.....thats fucking honor you piece of shit.

I simply can't believe that any police officer worth a damn in this entire world would make a statement such as yours.

Merit just means too dumb to pass the test.

Torres from 650 is a good guy but he already received a bump for his incident which has been misrepresented here.

His actions in 650 were medicore at best. There were many others more deserving. Don't believe it, ask Wil and he will tell you. At least he is honest.

NOBODY should receive two merit selections ever but expect to see these idiots promoted again.

If anyone in Patrol is still aggressive then you deserve what you get: 30 pending.

Unit 189, get over yourselves. How hard is getting dope out of the west and southsides? Yes, there are great offficers there but the majority walk around in their baseball caps asking to go home early. I know, I work there.

A lot was written about the academy instructor. Does anyone think he deserved it after 10 years of days with weekends off telling officers to say back sir?

Congrats to the legit Sgts.

Keep drinking the kool-aid, Mr. Righteous.
70% of what I will call lower to middle management which includes ONLY Sergeants and Lieutenants, are made by test scores. 100% of all upper middle and upper management appointments are made by 'MERIT'. This would include Captains, District Commanders, Directors, Deputy Chiefs, Chiefs, Deputy Superintendents, Assistant Deputy Superintendents, and Assistant Superintendents.

So lets say if there are 100 Sgt's & 100 Lt's made during some time frame your "career", you have a legit chance at 140 out of 200 total spots; and ZERO chance at ANY of the upper management spots. Total of 10 ranks, you can get into 2 of the 10. Thats 20%. The bottom 20%. Yeah, you're going to have the ability to change things alright. Don't kid yourself about this being a 'career' it is a JOB (unless you are connected)

You're right, my pride won't increase my pension, or pay, but I'd rather have my pride than be part of a BS promotional process.
