News reports are breaking this afternoon that Mayor Daley will not seek reelection next year. Hang on to your seats, folks. Shit is about to get real.
According to the Tribune, Daley made the announcement in a very quick speech today, saying: "The truth is I have been thinking about this for the past several months. In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less."
Either Mayor Daley or his father have been mayor for 42 of the last 55 years. Mayor Daley will become Chicago's longest serving mayor later this winter prior to next year's election.
No word yet from any potential challengers, including Rahm Emanuel.

I say (really just a guess) that the odds on favorite to run and possibly succeed are: BURKE or J.J. Jr.'s old lady (already an alderman)
Keep in mind that the mayoral election is non-partisan so while there may be a whole group of pols reaching for the brass ring, the top few will actually be in the run-off and any one person needs 50% & 1 to win.

Daley is leaving for several reasons:
1st He is a family man and his wife is sick and perhaps cancer has got the best of her.
2nd The City is Dead Broke, he has spent the reserves, the money from the Skyway and Parking Meter fiasco is gone. No one is interested in buying Midway so no more quick infusion of cash.
3rd No Money, cant hire police, crime perception out of control police superintendent clueless, no confidence from men and totally ineffective as the police Superintendent.
He is leaving before the entire thing falls apart. Whoever the next dope is has a huge budget problem on his hand. He or she has no option but to increase property taxes and really cut the work force. Big privatization of work force coming on the horizon. Look for huge cuts in services to take place as we get nearer to Detroit.
Businesses will stick around for a while to see what takes place. If some stability remains so will they, somewhat of a stable tax base. If a new Mayor, a Minority say Hispanic or Black takes over and tries to build their own infrastructure and power group things will grind to a halt as entrenched power brokers fight back ( Just Like when Harold won the election ) The City Bond Rating will quickly fall and we will pay more to borrow and run the government.
We will be quickly heading towards Detroit if the wrong person gets power.
Dont get me wrong I thought Daley was a tyrant and hard to work for and hard to please, head strong and demanding but did accomplish some good things and hold the shit outside the door for as long as possible.
