Shots Fired in 016
Technically, nowhere is "safe" in Chicago anymore. Even way up north:
A Chicago police officer fired at a suspect who attempted to hit him with a vehicle tonight in the Northwest Side's Jefferson Park neighborhood.
About 7:05 p.m., a suspect attempted to run over the police officer near North Northwest Highway and West Foster Avenue, said police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety, citing preliminary information.
The officer, fearing for his life, shot at the suspect, who then fled the scene in the vehicle. Preliminary reports do not indicate that either the officer or the suspect was injured.
A reader e-mails us that this is about two blocks from the 016 District station. Watch yourselves boys and girls. It's everywhere.

Two of them live in 025. The three that live in 016 are all hold leadership positions in their gang. What do you think 016 will look like in the next three to five years?

Another reason to keep the gun with you at all times. I left Garfield Ridge for this very reason. I didn't want to leave but I left for the same reason my dad moved us from 50th pl. and Hoyne in 1974, it wasn't my neighborhood anymore. I'm not leaving here (016) and I'm not far from where this shooting took place. I like where I live and there really isn't any place to go from here so I'll be damned if I'm going anywhere now. The officer was struck seconds after he exited his vehicle but he appears to be ok, I dont know if the bad guy got hit but, not an easy task under the circumstances. Good job office
BUT, unlike other neighborhoods in Chicago the concerned citizens who witnessed it came back to the scene to find out if the PO was ok and provide positive accounts of what happened. Why do you officers in 016 live with your heads in the sand? You've always had criminals living among you out there. They were just smart enough to do their dirty work somewhere else. Many major drug dealers live in the 'burbs now...know why? Because a lot of them don't allow their business to follow them home.
Whenever we've done search warrants on their suburban homes, the neighbors always are shocked to discover what their upstanding neighbor is really about.

heard an officer on zone 1 last week comment that there are more latin kings in the southeast corner of 016 than in humboldt park--- with all the shootings going on there he might be right-- everywhere you go in 016 now you see these cocksuckers strutting around like peacocks--- more and more homeowners go with the section 8 bullshit because they can't sell the house and the voucher is sure money every month--- so the door is wide open for these shitheads to walk right into some of the best neighborhoods in the city--- you have to work 2 or 3 jobs to live there but they get it all for free which is why i can't wait to get out of this shithole--- but i will never fuck my neighbors by allowing any of these assholes to live in my house...

Claims that P.O.s were making it personal resounded w/ the brass, who just wanted to slide thru their twilight years on the job! MLDs,SCs, 4CHs,VLs,TVLs,etc,abound unscathed as a result of not the P.O.s but the bosses who refuse to let us do our "job". ALL areas of 016, save the illustrious Wildwood and Edgebrook, have suffered for the lack of "proper" Policing. PPOs should NOT be trained there, as they don't get the frequency of violent crime and mayhem and cannot establish a "personal" work ethic there as a result of poor management and fear of getting in trouble for doing their job, they aren't able to learn the"proper" Policing ethic which then lets the gangbangers ply their trade w/o impunity. I said why dont you set up on them he sais whataya mean. Million dollar question if they said because 016 is the slowest district with the highest burglaries and no ones locking them up, so your gonna make less than guys working in busy districts.I think they should rotate guys outa 016 ,its not fair thet get 4 bs jobs a night and make the same as busy districts

First of all, if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem. People like you can criticize but can not come up with solution. Oh well.
Here are my ideas. Also, instead of criticizing me, come up with better ideas.
1. I propose we have special teams, that make these assholes lives miserable beyond what they can imagine. Perhaps they will see the light and go back to their own shit neighborhoods.
2. There are many good veteran officers in 016. I won't paint all of them with the same brush by saying they are lazy or no good. A good balance would be to add in some good young aggressive working police officers in the 016th district.
3. The citizens who live there need to be more proactive. In Uptown, they engage in positive loitering at their trouble spots. The citizens refuse to let their neighborhood turn into a shithole and so far they are winning. The citizens in 016 can do the same. Identify areas that are going bad, and then engage in positive loitering before those trouble spots increase and get worse.
4. Officers should be proactive in contacting citizens' complaints and in asking them to be their eyes and ears. We as police offices can't be everywhere. But with the help of citizens, we can gain more intelligence on the criminals.
Well those are my ideas so far. Something to build upon. Ok Mr. Know It All, what are your ideas? Or are you going to just sit there and criticize?

I've always lived in 016 and I rarely (practically never)see a car on a traffic cop. That goes for the tac and gang cars too! The part of 016 that is busy is Belmont to Irving Park Road and Cicero to Austin (and now it is pushing towards Naragansett). Plus the shit is moving past Irving Park Road and it is even going past 6400 West. Also, there are small pockets of 016 turning into garbage. There are also small pockets of good neighborhoods throughout the North side turning into shit holes. And once those shit holes start, they only expand, UNLESS the leadership in this department begins to take proactive measures.
If things keep up the way they are going, Chicago won't be a decent city to live in and then you will have the middle class/decent people move the hell out. Then more will move out and literally before you know it, we are the next Detroit.
I live in the 16th District and would like to commend some of the police officers who work there. There are some old timers(plus 20 yrs.) who can still get the job done. I had a problem with some gangbangers and the problem was addressed. Maybe old school tactics were used but they got the done, no more problems. Thank you BM and HB your friend in Area Five.

Nothing too new here for guys that have worked North...a lot of weight(dope/weed etc.) in these safe houses of 016. Yes many of the higher ups live there or shack and bag there with their baby mama bitches that LEASE the apts. because they have Id's and fool the landlords.
There has been more gang banging shit in the last couple of years including shootings and a few homicides and that could be due to fact that the east end of 017 and areas of 014 and 025 just got too hot for those local assholes....hit too many times by search warrants and consents to searches etc. The yuppies may have edged them out too...

I live in 16 but work in another district. Don't label every officer in 16 as bad or a dog ass. There are a lot of really good coppers that work their asses off and many of them came from the west side districts and wanted to work where we all live. I've called a few of them when I see something and they are there immediately.

Do you ever go to 7-11 and goof off for half an hour? Boy, I remember those summer nights in the ghetto, 10+ jobs before we left the lot, and we still found a few minutes to get a coffee at 7-11. But, if you work on the HOMEFRONT, you should be the Real Police and work every minute of your tour... again, I hope you are intelligent enough to detect the sarcasm here. After all, we only get a couple of jobs each tour...
It's funny, the jobs I look forward to are "shots fired", "robbery/burglary in progress", "disturbance with a mental", "hold up alarm"; as opposed to "off-duty P/O calling about...". I live on the Homefront, and I don't like what I see. I also work here, and don't like what solutions are available to me. And we are pretty fucking busy! Think about the area we cover, with less coppers than 015 or 025, it gets pretty interesting when you need backup...
