$16.5 Million Pissed Away

As covered here last month, a federal judge approved this settlement:
  • A federal judge signed off today on a $16.5 million settlement between the City of Chicago and tens of thousands of people who claim they were mistreated by Chicago police while being held as suspects in crimes.

Lawyers representing plaintiffs in the class-action suit said so far some 58,000 people have submitted claims in hopes of collecting a share of the settlement.

Based on how long they spent in jail and the conditions they faced, plaintiffs are eligible for awards of as much as $3,000 to as little as $90.

Some plaintiffs spent days in interrogation rooms without food, water or sleep, while others merely weren't provided bedding or food during overnight stays in police jails...
Seriously? No food or water? Next we're going to hear of PTSD incidents involving the Black Hole of Calcutta or some such nonsense.

Where's the Crystal Ball Unit? We predict an upsurge in crack and heroin consumption coinciding with the checks for $90 being cut.

Before you get that event number can you fluff my goose down pillow and crank up the thermostat? Its a bit nippy in this lockup. I wouldn't mind some hot cocoa with my bologna sandwich.

If the lockup gets mattresses, will they have to check for bedbugs at the end of each tour? You know because prisoners could then sue for bedbug bites too.

How often does a person spend the entire night in our lockup? Most people are there for a couple of hours maximum, not like the old hard print cards, pre-AFIS days of 12-24hours to clear.

Like an earlier post stated, who is going to be in charge of mattresses, sheets, blankets and washing and cleaning them? I can only imagine how maggotity, flea infested and smelly these items will get after a week in 011, 007, 003, etc.

It isn't like you are at the County and will be there for a while. An arrestee is in our lockups, for at the most--24 hours, until they get taken to CBC.

Is it the food they didn't like, our delicious Eckrich turkey bologna on Butternut bread. What's next, do we have to make restaurant runs after taking shithead's order?

I wonder how much the lawyer's cut was.

Hey, Scumbag lawyers, I hope you proud of yourselves for screwing hard working people out of their tax money.

This money could be used for something else other that lining your pockets and giving a ghetto denizen $90 to buy dope with.

Hey, lawyers have yacht payments to make. And the City has lots of play money.

So where's the rub?

this suit was one of the biggest jokes the city has ever had to deal with. Plaintiffs' lawyers, the firm of Loevy&Loevy actually deposed an expert witness on the proper treatment of persons in police custody who used language that basically described the CPD as being 50 years behind the rest of the country when it comes to the conditions of persons under arrest. In my experience our department has very professional lockup personnel and prisoners are treated humanely and kept safely in confinement. This whole suit was a huge scam from the beginning. I actually read complaint online and it is full of allegations that that were never substantiated with evidence. For instance, the first member of the class bringing the suit claims to have been arrested for a crime he did not commit. His claim of innocence in the civil suit is bizarre considering he took a plea to aggravated battery and fully avoided a criminal trial. The Loevy firm has damaged this department substantially. Remember the biggest chunk of this 16 mil is going to the Loevy firm, not the plaintiff class members.

Did you know juvenile arrestees get a free dental checkup when they arrive in the detention center?

And the officers who were wronged in getting placed into the Behaviorial Program and were subjected to getting needles placed into their arms to get blood get no settlement. If any of the mopes claimed that happened to them, there would be a public uproar, television coverage, reverands gathering, and the likes. We will never forget.

Jeeeezus....enough already. When does it end? I was already depressed about wasting my life working for this joke of a department and this joke of a city but this is it. I'm so numb about all of the corruption, Daley criminal conspiracy, Jodie, EB, Huberstein bullshit that I can't even get riled up over shit like this.

I'm hoping that the point of Satan's spear is right up Daley's ass on the big DOWN escalator at the foot of St. Peter. Burn for eternity you rotten cocksucker.

close all district lock ups
transport all prisoners to areas and central detention .
this would put approx 100 police officers back on the street
keep detention aides in areas with one sworn officer

I know that some of the shitbags that I've arrested will be in line for some of that including the one suing me now for spending a week in county.

No more.

But as I say that, will I have to endure being called a "dogass" by my peers who have never been sued and never had to travel to shitbag's attorney's office to give a deposition and never been on trial in federal court and never had to fill out a financial statement so shitbag can ask for his share of my savings, investments, property etc?

The City doesn't pay punitive damages and the shitbag & attorney only have to prove their case by a preponderance of the evidence, a mere 51%. Not beyond a reasonable doubt.

So be it then.

Some may call it "dogass" but none will ever again see me in federal court being sued. Not for this City, not on this job. Never.

it's called jail, this is not supposed to be comfortable or fun or in any way enjoyable. no, this is not cruel or unusual punishment. being placed in a cell for 4 to possibly 48 hours is not that terrible. there is even turkey bologna provided. why can't we outsource jail and prison to Asia like we are doing with everything else? a short stint in the thai system might be a wake up call to these pieces of $h!+
wah wah wah, i need a blanket.

Loevy does not get any of the $16.5 mil; this is federal court and they get to bill whatever they deem their bill to be. The judge must approve it of course, but it is substantial whatever it is.

If the plaintiffs got $1 the lawyers would still get paid. Federal Court is different that way from state court.

The scumbag lawyers have orchestrated a public relations nightmare for the Police Departments around the country. They had a lot of help from politicians and charlatan reverends each working towards their own ends.

The end effect is a negative attitude to any authority, but the Police Officers specifically. This allows them to vilify any Officer in court. They rape the taxpayers in the civil circus acts where they suborn perjury with impunity and gain ridiculous verdicts that more recently punitive damages to Officers.

This new twist of punitive damages may be their undoing. It has caused de-policing and their bread and butter may dry up completely. If and when the public realises it's their tax dollars they are giving these thieving bottom feeders, they may stop it. They are bigger criminals than the criminals they represent.

It is easy to put this court settlement in the terms of the usual scum that you arrest. But, not everyone who is arrested is scum. And, pray that none of your family members are arrested and subject to the lock-up conditions. Do you really think that the lock-up keeper or watch commander walk around periodically and inspect the lock-up and prisoners? Really? Yes, Chicago is many years behind how other cities treat their prisoners ands that is what sealed the fate of this law suit. Lets face it, the conditions in the lock ups were lousy at best. They are not meant to be punishment, but a temporary holding facility for those presumed guilty. No one asked for Holiday Inn conditions, just humane.
