Well Done Officers

  • A police detective who noticed a pattern of more than two dozen armed robberies and stopped that suspected robber at his last crime was one of 15 officers honored -- two posthumously -- on Tuesday in recognition of outstanding valor.

Mayor Daley and Police Supt. Jody Weis awarded the 2010 Lambert Tree Medal to Det. Dominick Ciccola, according to a police release. Special Honorable Mentions were given to 14 officers during the City of Chicago Awards Ceremony on Tuesday morning.

  • The awards ceremony also recognized the heroic acts of Officers Christopher L. Davis, Brian D. Gaffney, Robert A. Ontiveros, Robert J. McGee, Darin L. Macon, Sean M. Lewis, Ricky Rivera, Adis Klincevic, Tony Ramirez, Thomas E. Olsen and Ryan M. Delaney, and Sgt. Michael G. O'Malley

Officer and Alejandro Valadez and Sgt. Alan J. Haymaker received posthumous honors.
Thank you all for your service Officers.

"2010 Lambert Tree Medal to Det. Dominick Ciccola...

"While reviewing recent crime statistics, Ciccola noticed a pattern in which an offender, armed with a handgun, was robbing gas stations. This included 25 reported robberies in the city and suburbs. Ciccola, assigned to the FBI Violent Crime Task Force, requested that the task force become involved.

"The next morning, Ciccola and his FBI partner began touring the area of the robberies in a covert vehicle, according to the release. After an hour, Ciccola observed a white van paying special attention to a gas station and matching the description of the offender's vehicle.

"The pair set up surveillance a short distance away and while watching the station, Ciccola observed the offender emerge from the alley on foot wearing a white surgical mask, as the offender had worn in previous robberies. The offender advanced toward the station and drew a handgun from his waistband as he entered.

"Ciccola exited his vehicle and requested backup. He and his partner positioned themselves outside of the station, in which the man had displayed a black handgun and announced a robbery.

"As he fled, Ciccola shouted 'Police' numerous times at the armed robber. The robber raised his weapon and leveled it toward Ciccola and his partner, but Ciccola fired first, striking the suspect, who died from his wounds."

This gas station is in Harwood Heights, in the little triangle where Nagle, Forest Preserve Drive, and Narragansett all come together. I've been past it a million times, and your backgrounds there are 100% residential houses, close in and every way you turn. Great job in taking out the robber -- another one of Comcast's finest installers, wasn't he? -- and not hurting anyone around.

Wow, look at what the FOP Grand Lodge got passed through the House and Senate, and is going to be signed by President Obama.

H.R. 218 was amended to include all "qualified law enforcement officer’s" not just retired. This means if you can qualify you can carry. Check out the website below.
http://www.fop.net/servlet/display/news_article?id=2725&XSL=xsl_pages%2fpublic_news_individual.xsl&nocache=24044378

Guess there’s no need for HB 6901 or a lobbyist looking to be paid on the backs of disabled officers.

What a shame all that work for nothing.

“The bill, which was crafted in large part by the FOP, was given a high priority by the organization. No other law enforcement organizations or police groups took played any role in its successful passage despite intense interest in the bill on the part of active and retired officers. The legislation will improve certain provisions of the Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act (LEOSA), especially with respect to retired law enforcement officers, and will make clear that law enforcement officers employed by the Amtrak and Federal Reserve Police Departments, as well as those employed by the executive branch of the Federal Government who are classified as a GS-0083 branch—especially the U.S. Department of Defense—meet the definition of "qualified law enforcement officer" in current law. The bill would also lower the aggregate years of service needed to meet the definition of "qualified retired law enforcement officer" from fifteen (15) to ten (10) and removes confusing language related to that same definition.

The bill will be transmitted to the President to be signed into law.”

NO SHIT!
Officer Ciccola made this happen because of brains, experience and good old fashioned POLICE WORK!

The entirety of anything ever put out by the CBU will not amount to one, single pinch as focused or relevant as this.

Machines cannot do what Dom Ciccola did. Period. This didn't result from his looking at statistics or numbers. It resulted from one man being able to anticipate the actions of another man, based solely on organic stuff human beings do that computers cannot understand.

Policework is immeasurably greater than the CBU. Fuck the CBU, three cheers for guys like Ciccola.

Some of the old dispatchers were like this; they knew the neighborhoods and the district they dispatched, and remembered things -- which alley was often set up to ambush police, etc.

The new crop of OEMC call takers reflects the city's change-'em-around-like-light-bulbs philosophy. You could always tell when you had a West Sider dispatching 024; "Ridge" became "Ridgeway." They don't even know street names, or care what part of the city they're dispatching.

It also used to be that a "call history" was not automatically attached to every telephone number like a stain of wrongdoing, and citizens felt free to call in and help out more.

The ones with radios would call in with info on a crime from the night before that the new dispatcher didn't know about, when officers had someone on the hood and were wondering where he got all those rolls of quarters.

They would call in when the dispatcher had his pedal stuck down and was wiping out the zone and didn't know it. Today, the "call history" gets these people marked out as "nuts," so they don't call anymore.

The police used to get active, real-time help this way; now they have CAPS meetings at the end of the month instead that do nothing but take manpower off the street and cost money.

"Eyes and ears of the Police Department?" Not any more. Not going to stick their head out -- let someone else do it.

What does this lead to? Remember the name "Kitty Genovese?"

Policeman or responsible citizen, nothing beats a good set of eyes and ears with a brain working behind it. Cameras with no one watching them are no replacement for "street sense."

Try actually reading it before you throw out your opinion. The detective won the medal the other 14 were the finalist that received an honorable mention to the Lambert tree.

Three of these officers were shot in the line of duty. It would at least be nice for officers to show some respect once in a while.

The two narcotics officers that were shot should receive their medals next year. The city is slightly behind.

Does she not have any friends or relatives or fellow politicians who will spring her fat ass out of CCJ?

That is most certainly NOT what that particular law says. What happened is that you can't be charged FEDERALLY with a weapons offense if you are a QLEO. The Firearms Act is written so as to not displace State laws.

Well, uh, she, uh, she blew the money. "I gon' buy clothes. I gon' buy clothes." Probably made down payments on all kinds of things with it. Luxury sedan, fancy house -- none of it going to be paid for now.

"Call me...irresponsible..."

"Does she not have any friends or relatives or fellow politicians who will spring her fat ass out of CCJ?"

What kind fool is you. She under the bus, man. Nobody know who she is, know whum sayin.

You should seen her in dose cuffs. Ooooo, girl was trippin'. Eyes like they gon' come outa her haid.

Perhaps from the innocent -- who don't immediately resign their lucrative position, either, like she did.

No he didn't. There were two doors to the gas station, one on each side of the building. Dom covered one while the agent covered the other. The bad guy came out the one Dominick was covering.

Just FYI, the agent has been decorated for shooting an armed fugitive during an arrest in 2005, and decorated again while on an assignment in Afghanistan. But being FBI means he must be chickenshit, right?

This is total misinformation. HB 218 allow concealed carry under give circumstances by active PO's and retired P{'s that have qualified. The amendment merely broadens the exemptions. It is correct that some states, New Jersey notably, have misinterpreted, but I suspect that will get changed.

You should read the law carefully.

Those awards are a great thing. Many people are glad the job of reading the story that lead to the award is now being done by a professional who can relate the emotion of the event. He is never recongnized although he has been doing it for years now. so I thought I would do it here. Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford reads both the fire and police narratives in the city hall ceremony and you gotta say he does our guys proud. Too bad we dont have someone on our team who could do it for us but until that happens thank the fire department for lending his voice to us.
