Everything Old is New Again - Again

Another rumor:
  • WTF I just heard that our marine unit is getting sent to mobile strike force or the TRU unit for the 12th 13th 1st and 2nd periods. What are these moronic bosses thinking? There have been several security threats all over the world and in different U.S. cities that have been thwarted so why would you deplete a year round unit of personnel that plays a major role on commercial waterways in one of the biggest cities in the U.S. And in case most of you do not know the marine unit responds to all jobs year round and the U.S. Coast Guard vacates the Downtown Chicago area until something big happens or until boating season reopens in May. Nice decision DUMB ASS COMMAND STAFF and you know who you are!!!!
We seem to recall the Marine Unit was previously sent to the old Detail Unit back in the day. They worked the Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears and other winter details for years when the lake and locks were frozen over. They may have kept a skeleton crew around to warm up the boat engines and such, but unless the city suddenly inherited an icebreaker, we could see utilizing the manpower in other ways.

Marine guys and gals? Weigh in here - good idea or bad? We know next to nothing about your duties and responsibilities.

OBVIOUSLY, you don't need the whole crew out there hanging out at the boathouse. Truth be told, many of the members of the Marine unit can't even perform the standards in place for acceptance into the unit...especially the time they are required to tread water. And if you think large numbers of the patrolmen can't perform to the standard, don't even THINK about checking the fitness of the Sgts. assigned there...May as well utilize many of their personnel into the antiterrorism 'mix' as best the Dept. can.

Icebreaker?

Except for the marinas Lake Michigan generally doesn't freeze over here in da great city of Chicago.

Generally, some winters you will see ice out for a few blocks off the beaches.

Back when I came on this job during the last ice age there was no Lake Michigan and we were always cold. Of course I started out as a Park District cop and then came over during the CPD takeover in 9000 BC.

Terrible idea. Around 2000 the Marine Unit went to a year around unit. The entire unit was structured around this, training schedules etc.

Now the worst boss ever to befall the Marine Unit, Steve Georgas, (Deputy Chief Special Functions, Radke's old job) has decreed that the work of the past 10 years will go right out the window so that the Marine Unit will add some extra bodies to some other unit somewhere.

And all those rescues that were made in winter? Call the Fire Department. Evidence searches? Call the Fire Department and subpoena a fireman for trial.

And the equipment? Boats, scuba gear, compressors, electronics etc? And the year around training that the Marine Unit did?

Ask Steve Georgas.

This will last until another attack and then it will be rush rush, get them back, and excuses will be made for public consumption about the state of readiness.

And all that Federal Homeland Security money spent to make and keep the Marine Unit a full time year around unit? Like all the other federal money, spent on something else.

This will push some old timers off the fence and into retirement. They will go and take their many years of knowledge and experience with them.

New people can simply ask Steve Georgas with questions about the lakefront, operations etc. He knows everything anyway. Just ask him.

We'll see how long this lasts when someone goes through the ice in a harbor. When someone tries to escape the Police jumping into the river. When a tourist from out of town decides to end it near the Suicide...err Holiday Season. When your dog runs out onto the ice because your busy texting.

True, calls for service may slow down but with ice and cold the chances for death climb ten fold. Also the Marine Unit uses the winter season to brush up on training and education since they are not saving millions in boats and yachts from sinking/crashing onto the rocks.

Whoever the boss is that is making this decision... remember one thing, just like your pistol/revolver (REMEMBER IT'S IN YOUR DESK DRAWER), it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

If this is some boss/former Marine Unit/TRU wonder volunteering those guys for this.... SHAME ON YOU!

Clemency Hearing

Ronnie "Mad Dog" Carrasquillo was sentenced to between 200 and 600 years in prison for killing Chicago Police Officer Terrence Loftus in 1976. Loftus was trying to break up a gang fight on the city's North Side when he was shot to death.

Carrasquillo has filed a petition for executive clemency. A public hearing will be held on Friday, October 8, 2010 at the State of Illinois building located at 100 W. Randolph, Chicago, IL. The hearing is scheduled for 9:00 am in Room 9-034.

Carrasquillo has had support from some noteworthy public officials in past attempts to gain parole, including U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez. The Lodge is encouraging all members, active or retired, to make every effort to attend this hearing. Your presence does make a difference.

The Marine Unit responds to different types of jobs all year round and even though there may not be as many calls in the winter months they still get jobs and are always willing to respond without hesitation. I work in Area 2 and I remember one cold winter when they dove under the ice in the Beaubian Woods Lagoon looking for evidence in the homicide of a flight attendant ( Tracey Todd ) whose remains were found in the area. It was a bitter cold day and they had divers and people on shore working their butts off in the ice and frigid water that did everything they could possibly do to assist. When you have units that are really specialized such as this one , Canine , SWAT , and many others why not let them do the job they are paid and, trained to do ?

Down time in winter IS filled with training. And they do patrol the lakefront etc. How many people not in the unit really know what the Marine Unit does?

Yes, fresh water does freeze in winter, harbors freeze, near shore, locks, fisherman fall through the ice, kids venture out.

What's the difference. Tons of money has been spent in the last 10 years on cross training, heavy weapons, all weather capability, might as well have them out there playing charades and getting event numbers with the rest.

Yes.

It is a more severe ticket if the Coast Guard writes a speeding ticket to a boat for speeding in a no wake zone like inside Chicago Harbor. A couple of thousand dollar federal fine and you argue it in front of a federal magistrate at the federal building. CPD hands them an ANOV.

I was in the Marine Unit for a time. I didn't think it was so cushy when out there on the lake in 6-8 foot waves. Much different than the ocean. Try to get back in the boat when it is going up and down 6-8 feet at a time and it is freezing cold and twin 36" props are nearby.

All this whining and bitching about what other po's work just takes away from real issues we are facing.

The Mumbai terrorists arrived by sea from Pakistan to avoid the hassle of trying to smuggle weapons in past a border patrol. So unless the terrorists are from Canada we should be okay. What would the marine unit do anyway? Attempt a "broadsides and boarding parties" engagement with a zodiac style speed boat?

During the winter months, the Marine Unit do nothing other than swimming in local pools, working out in the gym and sleeping on a boat in the harbor. They should be sent to units to do some police work. Steve Georgas is right on this one and remember, he used to be the Lieutenant in the Marine Unit, so he knows exactly what they do in the winter.

3 seperate agg batt/firearms last night in the deuce, 5 total shot. 1 other incident with shots fired and A1 gang team recovering a pistol with a head. Almost felt like old times in 002. The rest of the week/weekend should be fun times with the weather staying warm. Walk in to a backlog, leave in a backlog. No, we don't need more officers, we need more platoons in MSF! Ugh!

Really Jr?? three seperate shootings in the duece make it seem like the old days??? hahahahahahaha, young lad, you have no idea what the old days in the duece were like. you would have three seperate shootings at three seperate buildings within ten minutes... mop up those ones then you would have to head to stateway to mop up 3 more shootings... then lunch then you better make your way back to federal because im sure two or three more are gonna be shot somewhere in the taylors before the night ends... 3 shootings in a single night please... you really have no idea what the duece was like in the late seventys, eightys and early-mid 90s... bodies flying out windows, bodies in abando's, 5 or 6 shot in one shooting in the lobby, people tied up in cars in the courtyards and started on fire.... those were the old days.... but what do I know... im just an old old dog ;)

"We are fucked when Mumbai style assault teams come here to wreek havoc. After the smoke clears and the body count is sufficient, the city will impliment some crack pot program to combat that which has already occurred."

As bad as some departments in this country are run, it will never get as bad as the Mumbai terrorist attack. Their police had weapons that hadn't been fired in years, some had no ammo, others were not trained in their use and some of the cops just dropped their weapons and ran like hell. (remind you of anyone? - haha)
If they attacked Chicago, I am sure that CPD coppers would end it quickly. The only troubling thing is that things like this can be prevented, but with idiots in charge making bad decisions, the likelihood of that happening is slim to none.

Also heard from a good source that the marine unit is getting rid of 3 boats due to the high cost of maintaining them. The dept. has purchased 6 jet skis. Two officers per jet ski. Brass believes these can respond quicker to scenes as they will be patrolling the waterways same as squad cars.

The M/U used to be down in the winter. Went to housing or detail unit. Guys liked it, the only chance for any O/T.
Then the sgt died...lots of reasons and mistakes, but she was out of shape. So the answer was to keep the unit up year round to train in the off season.
Now you work all summer knowing you can't get time off, but you know that when you sign on, not a problem. Now they send out half the unit in the winter so you can't take off then either.
What are guys in thier sixties who have been in the unit for 30 plus Years gonna do?
This is just punishment because georges hated the guys there.
The bosses probably knew the unit wouldn't get any support from the rank and file. For some reason people are jealous of the hardest working guys on the department.
So go ahead and call names, but it is just "divide and conquer."
The bosses love to see it.

He did sneak in and destroy Meiggs Field. There is no end to their greed and ego.

Approx. 100 people took the last MU test. 50 failed the swim test. Most memebers are former life guards, military and have dive experience. Not 2 mention the one nut who swims the English Channel and everyother body of water.

Man I second what you say. I have never been in the Marine unit but have needed them a couple of times in my 20 plus years and they came through like champs. I also know what its like to work special with some of these Officers you talk about. They bitch all day about how they got screwed and they never get to go no where and they are better then everyone else and only people with clout can go places. (But they would never think of giving up their Special to younger Officers but that is another Story.)

Here is a lesson for you youngsters. There are 2 types of people in units. Those who have clout and those who actually work. If a unit had all clout people then nothing would get done. The bosses know this so if you have worked for them in the past and produced they MAY call you up when they get a unit. That happened for me in the past. They are not looking for the dogs who complain all day how they are looked over. They want Officers who work and do not have to toot their own horn.

IF you think everyone working a unit or 35th St has clout then your tin-foil hat must be too tight.

10/07/2010 09:18:00 AM

Except SWAT is the only specialized unit you mentioned that still makes the same pay as a beat cop and I am sure they are the most trained unit in the city! Makes you wonder why they do it?

I'm not a cop. Just a resident.

In a big city with huge frontage on one of the great lakes, I support having a dedicated marine unit. I don't give a shit if they don't do as much day-to-day work as other units. Boo hoo. That's life. There are different roles in this world. If you think it's a cush gig, get your padi certs and go join up with them.

I don't think this is shrewd resource allocation. I think this is hysterical stop-gapping for a police force that finds itself undermanned because of politician assholes.

Either way, I support my tax dollars going to fund a marine unit and if that means they're sitting around a station house on-call and drinking coffee during winter months, so be it. Who cares. Worth it. It's mind-bogglingly retarded for a city with a lakefront like ours, with rivers like ours, to not have a dedicated 24/7/365 unit for water.

Hmmmm, let's see, all the training, unlimited ammo, workout everyday, drive around and check out the sights of the city. Aw come on, they won't be doing that. They will still be cursing the clout needed to get in a unit like that. As if they didn't know before what the job is all about. someone must have told them it is all legit and they believed it.

Most of the time the Marine Unit doesn't do much. But when they have to do some things there is not enough money to induce me to put on an air tank and jump in that water. It isn't like going for an afternoon swim off North Ave beach.

They do something called black water diving. That is when it is so dark down there that they search the lake/river bottom by feel, running their hands along the bottom, looking for a gun, a radio or a body.

There are parts of the river that demand an exposure to communicable diseases report on every dive, and shots too if not up to date.

Try fishing a body out of the lake from the tailboard of a boat bobbing up and down in foul cold weather. Try running the boat on such a maneuver.

I can't do what they do and I don't begrudge them their pay or their spot in the unit. Everyone on this job would take a transfer to a unit if they could.

It is only the ones who cannot get into such a unit that cry foul. Somehow I knew that this job and city weren't exactly totally fair and on the up and up.

It's Chicago, get over it.

The Mahaffey Bros., Henry Horner's finest. Still had victim's property when arrested. No cries of wrongful imprisonment for those two. Good police work brought them down.

I see nothing wrong with this. If you need a body pulled, cfd will be on scene.

Just a little background explaining how much our legal system cares about justice. Look at how the Illinois justice system deals with animals who couldn't possibly be more guilty.

Trial after trail after trial after trial. And in the end, mercy. Mercy from a governor who will hopeful die himself in prison or at the very least return home to find that his wife of many years has died before his arrival.

That's the nice thing about justice. He doesn't sit on a bench or draw a pension, he just has the final word.

Every time someone retires from any job their experience goes with them.

Are you suggesting that people work here forever so we are never without their almighty "experience?"

Here's a news flash. It takes no more than 5 years to learn everything there is to know about this job. Add 2 more if you make dick.

If you have past this threshold and haven't completely figured this out, then you are an idiot.

Hey Karnack,

I am humbled by your all seeing brown eye. Beyond idiot there is the constant discovery.
unless you're stuct at Karnack.

You are referring to the 1983 home invasion, robbery, rape and double murders of Jo Ellen and Dean Pueschel by the Mahaffey Brothers, Reginald and Jerry.

--10/07/2010 11:39:00 PM

As I recall, the battery on the brothers' stolen car went bad in an alley. What to do, what to do. They looked around the alley and climbed into the first open window they saw.

Didn't Dean Pueschel have a .357 that he was never able to get to after being clubbed in his sleep?

Mahaffey brothers, Carr brothers -- why do we bother maintaining these life forms?

With the crappy economy and the horrible unemployment rate, we should all be thankful we have secure jobs and benefits. Stay safe.

By the way... SWAT doesn't blow any doors off any hinges any more.... They are essentially useless for search warrants.. They do a "Surround and call out" "Here ye here ye we are out here and have you surrounded... come out with your hands up..." What a fucking joke... Dude is flushing all his shit and saying... "Otay... I beez right out let me put on sum clothes" Flush.... "Oh Hi ocifers... come on in ... would you like some tea"? The SWAT team is good for hostage shit... don't bother calling them for a search warrant because they aint going in...

Don't forget the Durr brothers, Floyd, Eddie and Eric.

Three brothers, one family, all in prison at the same time. Two for life without parole. Floyd went away for the Ryan Harris murder. Prosecutors asked for the death penalty but the judge ruled his IQ was below the threshold for receiving death. So life without parole.

Look up N43114 - DURR, EDDIE in IDOC for a horrific vision of a nightmare who once walked among us.

Eddie is doing life without parole for a string of sexual assaults including one of an 11 year old girl which his brothers Floyd and Eric participated in.

Their father Monroe Durr gave a priceless quote to the newspapers about the Durr boys: "His mother did the best she could with them to make them respectable." "They caused it on themselves; they are good-looking young men. They don't need to go raping." Chicago Tribune, June 21, 2006

Indeed. Someone was a bit lax in their upbringing I would say.

Boy, you weren't kidding.

His situation is simple enough, though.

"Admission Date: 03/16/2001
Projected Discharge Date: INELIGIBLE"

Sounds like a second lifetime of indeterminate "SDP" custody on top of the life sentence...

Couldn't happen to an uglier, more frightening person. He's up on 19 charges, including "AGG KIDNAPG/CHILD<13/RETARDED."
