Making Friends Everywhere

  • NEW HAVEN — It was well after midnight, and the invitation-only party for Yale University undergraduates was reaching a peak. In the upscale nightclub Elevate, not far from campus, more than 100 students in semiformal attire were on the dance floor as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” pulsed over the sound system. In a throwback to childhood, a buffet table held platters of chicken nuggets and French fries.

But then the lights came on and about a dozen police officers and state liquor control agents, acting on a tip about under-age drinking, entered the club early on Saturday. Partygoers say the officers, two of them in riot gear and armed with assault rifles, ordered students to sit on the floor as they checked IDs, and for the next hour silenced polite questions with expletives and threats of arrest.

  • In its news release, the New Haven police said that the capacity for the event was 150 and that there were 256 people at the Yale party. The release added that the department’s chief, Frank Limon, was especially sensitive to the dangers of overcrowding.

“Chief Limon was the commanding officer on the scene of a nightclub tragedy in Chicago in 2003,” it said, adding, “Twenty-one people died and hundreds were injured when a panic set off a stampede in a club with the same type of difficult egress at Elevate.”

Yeah, it's a slow news night, but Frank does seem to step in it an awful lot.

Two sides to every story, but shit like this is apt to get needlessly abrasive. Did they seriously enter a party full of Yale students with carbines? Seriously?

For christs sake, jerk the cord on the fucking speakers, shout at them and bust out the ticket book- that's about all the command presence you need to control that entire situation.

... but yeah, yeah, you never know when one of the Ivy Leaguers is covertly armed and ready to rampage. Fucking christ. Everything doesn't have to be a testosterone driven show of force.

The job isn't one where making friends is part of the description, but needlessly making enemies over chickenshit is usually a dumb idea, perpetrated by dumb people. So, yeah. You now have a bunch of 19 year old future Yale lawyers who have a hypersensitive nerve about coppers. Great! Who cares, right?

These guys sound like retards.

There are infrequent times when a SWAT response is needed. This doesn't sound like one of those times.

Expect Frank "Call me Just for Men because my gray mysteriously disappeared" Limon to put his name forward for Weis's job next year.

I expect Jody to ride off into the sunset of some corporate job somewhere. He sure ain't gonna get hired by any law enforcement agency anywhere.

I have a fellow Viet Nam veteran buddy living in New Haven. The citizens there hate Yale and the "we're superior" atitude they have.
This Chief knew what he was doing.
Underage drinking at an overcrowded private club.
Yale is ultra-liberal and they hate the military and police anyway.
Don't concern yourself with what these elitest think, the Chief has to answer to citizens of New Haven and not to Yale.
With the manpower and city services he deployed the mayor had to know this was going on.
It seems to me that this club has been a problem for a while.

Gee, then that means that old Frankie Poo was the Commanding Officer of one of the worst case scenarios for scene protection in our Dept's history. Idiots were allowed to run up to the bambulances, no crime scene or perimeter was set up, just a big cluster-f*@k! They even use footage of this joke of a scene as an example of what not to do!

I thought Judy Martin was the on-scene commander. What did Limon do, get a notification on his blackberry from ops, command to wake up and take a ride over there after the fact? I think Frankie just kicked himself out the door and into the street with his own foot.

Well, no, they don't think they're superior to everyone in every way, but most of them legitimately are superior to most people in a lot of ways. All people aren't created equal. You can be embittered towards those who are blessed with intellectual gifts, or you can just accept that they drew a long-straw in life and focus on your bettering your own lot.

The whole "Mr. Joe Everyman Teaching The Highfalutin Smarty-Pantses a lesson!" is stupid. They are who they are; generally, extremely gifted kids (on par with what we have here at UofC), "liberal" just like a lot of conservatives were, back in college, doing the same shit college kids do, everywhere. Resent them for being smart, but mistreat them at your peril.

These are the policymakers of tomorrow and every kid at that party will go forward in their life with a first-hand opinion that cops are boorish, power-tripping douchebags. Their opinion didn't mean much when they were sitting on the floor getting hollered at by some mouth-breather with an M4, but they'll have the last laugh when they're working in Washington DC think tanks, holding public office, running the courts and drafting the rules that dictate your daily life. Those cops very well may have taken 'college liberals' and made them liberals of the lifelong variety. Bad, bad decision.

I never could understand the whole "they went to an Ivy League school, they must be smarter than me" train of thought. I went to a good school and many of the teachers there couldn't survive in the real world.

There are different skill sets that lead to success. I am pretty sure the President is a smart guy. He is a terrible President.

I am sure you are proud of your Princeton brother Mr. Blue Collar.
I bet he couldn't do what you do and I hope he is as proud of you. Many 'smart' guys look down their noses at the masses, and that's not too smart.

Bullshit. I've met more than my share of Ivy League assholes who DO have superiority complexes, simply because they went to Yale.

The fact that the cops came down hard on them is a good life lesson. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been to these parties before, and those in attendance have copped an attitude.

And I don't give a shit if your brother went to Princeton, or that you're just a "blue collar guy".

A dozen officers to handle a drinking situation with over 250 people? Sounds reasonable. And get used to hearing a little bad language and being told what to do, at least for an hour or so until things get sorted out. You'll come through just fine. Only a dozen guys dealing with 250 -- try to understand that they don't have time to provide mass emotional support. They are policemen, not psychiatrists. Their attention -- the whole operation -- is directed towards making sure no one gets hurt.

“Chief Limon was the commanding officer on the scene of a nightclub tragedy in Chicago in 2003,” it said, adding, “Twenty-one people died and hundreds were injured when a panic set off a stampede in a club with the same type of difficult egress at Elevate.” Remember that the idiot security guards set off the panic by pepper-spraying in a confined space, and then some other fool started yelling about "terrorist attack." That possibility, as everyone here seems to agree, calls for a coupla rifles handy -- nightclubs have been popular targets, and the police aren't sure what's going on in there yet.

How many died in that terrible club fire in Providence, R.I., set off by the indoor fireworks? Over 100, as I recall. Overcrowding can be a killer, as shown again and again. Too many whole carloads of underage drinkers get wiped out on the way home, too, over and over again.

This sounds like a great deal of wounded pride on the part of the stdents -- possibly for the first time in their sheltered lives -- and little more. I'm sure that the Chief, having seen what he saw already in Chicago, had nothing but good intentions.

What would we say about him if he did not learn from such an awful lesson?

No pepper spray, no crushing panic, no multiple deaths, everyone --officers and partygoers alike -- went home safe.

Good job.

I'm not the original poster, but from the tone of YOUR post, it sounds as if you're one of those jealous people who treats intellect as some sort of character flaw. What I got from the earlier post is a brother extremely proud of his sibling. I have a brother who persevered through our lousy (and quite poor) upbringing to achieve a higher education that was way beyond my abilities. Part of what makes him smart is his curiosity, and he's been places and done things that most people only dream about. He is not the least bit snobby. You'd enjoy the hell out of having a beer with him. So quit painting the educated with such a broad brush-you probably hate it when people do that to you.

------------------------------

Right. And I've met more than my share of coppers who were 98 IQ retards with massively dysfunctional personalities who, were it not for the relatively low barriers to entry for police work, wouldn't be qualified to do much more than flipping burgers.

Thing is, I realize they're the outliers and in no way representative of the mean. Most coppers I've met are decent guys, probably of above average intelligence- some, *extremely* intelligent who were drawn to policework as an action-career, but just as easily could've been an equities trader or a doctor.

Most Ivy Leaguers are decent, surprisingly regular guys too, but sure, a bit gifted at solving problems and deciphering puzzles. The whole concept of human intelligence- with winners and losers- raises serious inferiority hackles. Oh fucking well. Boo hoo.

I totally agree that there are different skills sets in life and different intelligence types. There are a lot of 'brilliant academics' who would fail at business, etc. Still the whole "they're smart, so they lack common sense" thing is horseshit. Or, "they're smart so they must think they're better than me so I'M GOING TO TEACH THEM A LESSON!!" is equally dumb, and probably portends of the sort of mouth-breathing cop that I've run into about as many times as you've ran into pompous Ivy Leaguers.

Ivy League or not, what happened in CT was just plain retarded. If you support this sort of thing, then you are too.

What the fuck does intelligence have to do with it? Most of the people who attend Yale test well, and I'm sure more than a few have specialized knowledge on some arcane subjects.

Big fucking deal. I'll take the Pepsi challenge with any of them as far as intelligence goes, especially the kind that that requires more than a high SAT score.

If it sounds like I'm profiling Ivy League students, Yalies in particular, I guess I'm guilty as charged. I haven't met one yet that wasn't a pompous ass.

In particular, the Yale graduate who washed out of my Arabic class at DLI. According to him, he washed out on purpose. Something about the course not being "challenging" enough.

So, his failure was purposeful and calculated, just as I'm sure he rationalized any success he'd had prior to that.

He proved himself to be a turd, and he wasn't the first. Maybe I just had the misfortune of running into all the Yale zeroes, but I doubt it.

Oh, stop threatening. Buncha kids out drinking in a joint and it got raided by the coppers. Probably the first remotely adult experience a lot of them ever had. There are lots of places in this world where it's "sit down, shut up, wait your turn." Man up and get used to it.

"Those cops very well may have taken 'college liberals' and made them liberals of the lifelong variety. Bad, bad decision."

I've been close to this kind of thing (in college and elsewhere) ad I have watched police doing similar abusive stunts. It didn't turn me against all police all the time, but a lot of people I know have been. I just take it as proof that there are idiots everywhere. This event was one of the dumbest things they could have done. You may wonder why so many people are not friendly with the police; this kind of thing is why. I've also witnessed individual police officers do things that were not up to the level of abuse, but were not necessary and abusive (and no, they were not directing it at me). One of those people is now a city council member (not in Chicago). The police wonder why he does not support them blindly.

-------------------

There's nothing fallacious in anything I said.

A mans political construct is usually a result of his life experiences. Ever heard the old saying "A conservative is a liberal who's been mugged?"

Most blissninny leftists are very sheltered people, totally detached from the real world you see every day as a cop. They live in places like Lincoln Park or the North Shore, they don't have to experience the practical consequences of their stupid ideals.

Liberalism is easy, when there's no costs associated with it in your own life.

College kids, like leftists, are stupid. They haven't seen much but over time, as they navigate more and more of the world, their first hand experiences temper their political center. This is why a wise man once said (paraphrase) "If you aren't liberal when you're 20, you have no heart. If you aren't conservative when you're 40, you have no brains..."

Peoples opinions of cops usually results from their first hand experiences with them. There will always be the anti-authoritarian types who will hate cops no matter what and the staunch "law and order" types who will support them regardless, but the other 90% of the world tends to judge cops based on their experiences.

When you take kids like this and expose them to such a needlessly aggressive and offensive situation, that's going to infect their thinking. As they go forward in life, the entirety of their opinion on cops will always be liable to 'that one time in college when we were at a party and a bunch of cops burst in with machineguns and told us all to get on the ground..."

It doesn't matter much if it's a bunch of shitheads from Olive Harvey Community College, but they did this at Yale. Those kids will eventually grow up to have a disproportionate say things, like it or not.

So, just like cops cry about how the citizens 'deserve what they get' in terms of a decaying city, I guess cops too 'deserve what they get' in terms of politicians unfavorable to them, which in turn screws us all.
