Officer Says "Thanks"
From our comment section:
- To all of the officers that assisted me on I 55 and Damen on Sunday 31 OCT 10….
I want to extend my sincerest gratitude regarding that night. All officers went above and beyond to assist me when I got shot. To clarify, I was working with a PPO but he was not the one who shot me. Our job requires us to make a split second decisions and sometime, it’s unfortunate but things like this happen.
Considering the high stress situation, everyone did everything perfect. I had one officer using his belt to make a [tourniquet] (to that officer, I still have your belt-let me know where to drop it off), another officer took the shirt off his back to prevent me from bleeding out, officers held my hands, a Sergeant elevated my leg, everyone assisted until the ambulance arrived... It did take a little bit of time for them to show up, but I know they have a tough job too.
Thank you to all officers that assisted me- from the ones on the scene, to the ones working the 012th district who blocked off traffic to get me to the hospital quicker. Thanks to ones who picked up my wife and all the officers and bosses who came to visit me as well. It was very nice to have so much support for me and my family. I was able to come home today at 1330 hours. I am hoping to make a full recovery. I have some nerve damage which will hopefully not be permanent. Stay safe and back each other up!
Sincerely,
Brain R. Alaniz

Class Act Officer Alaniz
Get well soon, officer. You have a really inspiring outlook and it is refreshing.
I dont know you, but I have been praying for you.
Take care and hopefully when u get back to work, our department will be on it's way towards repair.
If u need anything at all, just let SCC know.
You are a class act Brian. I think Sgt. Alaniz has a nice ring to it don't you?
Get Well Soon. Glad to hear you will make a full recovery. Keep your held high, thoughts and prayers for you and your family.
Brian , our prayers are with you for a speedy and full recovery .
Office it was an accident and please do not listen to the ass holes who want to tear you or your partner apart over this. I for one am glad your injury is not bad. I think everyones ego will take more time to heal, but thats ok. We as police officers should not rip each other up and we do and it has only gotten worse. I remember when I got on if you fuckec up you were corrected and thats it today cops will call you at home to remind you how fucked up you are. We need to stop this self destructive way.
Brian, take care of yourself and don't hurry back. The job will still be here. God bless you and your family. Happy Holidays my friend!
Thank You Officer! Get well soon.
FYI for officers out there, these are very inexpensive and can easily be carried by all officers. Easier than a belt.

THAT MAY NOT BE SUCH A GREAT REWARD (LOL). Brian should get a shot at any Unit he wants, a take home car, or how about become our next Superintendent? Anyone who lays in a hospital bed a short time after being shot pleading with J-Fled to not jam any Coppers over this incident deserves the BEST position in this Department!!! Get well soon Brian! Your humor is missed while you are away.....
God Bless, P.O. Alaniz. Unlike soo many of the people we deal with on a daily basis you are a class act and it makes me proud to be CPD after reading that. THANK YOU! BR 94
tourniquet? does that not result in the loss of a leg?
You, Sir, are an example to all these whiners out there. A credit to the Department. I wish you a speedy recovery! Your comments display a tremendous amount of class and manners.
So glad you're ok. God Bless you and all of the officers involved.
God bless you and prayers for a full recovery. I'm glad our guys did the right thing, and you are a stand-up guy to thank them here. Get well!

Geesh...make a guy Sgt for getting shot? You want to see why that is a real bad idea go to 019 3rd watch and have a chat with 1910...biggest idiot around! Im glad the guy is ok, and he seems stand up but you cannot hand out supervisory positions based on personality!
May God bless you!!! You will be in my prayers.......
Brian, that was all class. Since the day we started in 01 you have have always been the same! Speedy recovery, and God Bless buddy.
get well soon Brian enjoy the time with the little one.........Lobo

I wish you the best.
I don't think I would have taken this as well as you.
Anytime Brother, Thank you for your heart and effort. Please get well and enjoy your family.
A true Classy Officer you are.
You sir are very honorable. Take your time healing, all of this will be here when you return. For now, we got it. Spend some well deserved time off.
I just attended a kick-ass Emergency Self-aid course hosted by the Bridgeview Police Department last weekend covering emergency medical issues addressing this very situation.
EVERY cop needs to take some type of self-aid course like this. You can check it out at this link -
http://teamspartan.com/teamspartan_firearms_training_EMERGENCY_SELF_AID_FOR_LAW_ENFORCEMENT_OFFICERS.htm
Brian Bardsley from CPD has been presenting this course at L E agencies in the area and he brings real world, simple first aid applications to the table that can and will save your life until help arrives.
Not sure when they're running their next class, but I strongly recommend you guys jump on the opportunity to attend the next time it's offered.
That situation could have happened to any one of us. You never know when you might get hurt like that.
Be careful out there.
SCC - Let these guys know about this class. ALL our guys need it.

Dear fellow crusader and cpd brother, my family and I wish you a speedy recovery. They say the blue line is thinning but we always know we can count on each other in stressful times. Enjoy the holidays with your family and relax. You've earned it.
Can't keep a good man down. Get well Brian God Bless You Brother.
Unit #315
Worked with you in MSF. Always good for a laugh, and a true class act. Get well soon and hope to see you back before too long.
Brian thanks for your service and get better soon, but not too soon, the Holidays are coming and Florida is nice in January.
Get Well soon Office.
Glad to hear your recovering ok. There are a lot of Monday morning quarterbacks on this job and there always will. The Monday morning quarterbacks won't understand till they are in a similar situation. Enjoy your time off with your family and hope you have a full recovery. BACK UP YOUR FELLOW OFFICERS AND NEVER GO ON A JOB 99!
Classy response, and an example of all that is right with this once great department. Eat shit, J-Fled and Masters-Masters-Masters
Always makes my heart sink when hearing a fellow po getting shot. Your words are heartfelt, sincere and it shows you have more class in your pinky than our exempts have combined. Godspeed and God bless
From all of us at the Cicero PD. Glad you are doing well Brian! Hope your recovery is quick! God Bless you!!
Nice of you to do this, Brian. I'm sure all involved appreciate it.
Nerve repair takes a lot of time, so don't give up. (And, unfortunately, pain means you're actually healing.) Take all the time you need to recover and don't rush back before you're ready.
Officer, you are well spoken. I hope you have a full and speedy recovery. I like how you thanked everyone there and mentioned the fact that things happen fast out there. Because of that we need to back each other up.
Take Care

tourniquet? does that not result in the loss of a leg?
11/03/2010 09:13:00 AM
Not necessarily. It allows you to exert a whole lot of pressure on an artery to stop massive bleeding. The idea being that you choke off the blood, but you don't tighten it so much that it stops completely, and depending on how you apply it, you can loosen it at intervals to let some past.
When applied as hard as possible, then locked out - yes, it could kill your limb. But done properly it buys you some time til the EMTs get there. I'm surprised you didn't know this. Keep your knowledge of first aid current; it could save your life, or the life of another someday!

Thanks for taking the time in the middle of all you're going through to let everyone know how you're doing. That's wonderful news. Now get yourself comfortable and get some rest and don't worry about nothin'.
Sounds like a class act.......
To 9:13 poster...no, the application of a tourniquet does not in and of itself cause a loss of the limb. It becomes a question of how long it is applied. In battlefield situations, where a casualty evacuation may be delayed the tourniquet is monitored and sometimes briefly loosened.
The more you know! (Cue the whooshing rainbow)
Very nice letter Brian. People hold grudges for far less important things. It's great that you are so quick to forgive. take up some hobbies so you don't come back too early out of boredom. enjoy ur babies first x-mas and take lots of pictures!! we miss so many special moments with our families for this job. enjoy ur time off:)

Get well soon office. After the holidays ya' know?
And get the hole in those pants sewn up and keep them for a souvenir of the day. If they are not already inventoried for court that is.

fucking moron. you are either a kid or some clueless writer looking for something to cover.
From a 01-9 classmate, Brian so glad you are ok, and you are still the same great guy you were on day one of the academy. I hope a full recovery for you, and like everyone else said, relax and don't hurry back!! We will be here when you do.
Get well soon and thanks for being the police. Enjoy the holidays with your lovely family.
CPD needs more officers like you Brian!
GET WELL SOON!
Brother in blue.
Proud to be a Brother Rice Crusader!! Too many of our grads are getting killed or shot on this job. Rest up, take care and enjoy the holidays. God Bless

I would have no problem with a guy shot making meritorious sergeant over say- JFLED drivers or Ernie's dollies.

Couldn't read the whole link for the Emergency Self-aid class information. The link got cut off. Myself and several other officers on my Tact Team want to attend this course. Does anyone know the website I can go to for more information? Please post. Thanks.
God Bless you Officer. It was an accident and like you said...we have a split second & thats it. Thank You for being a stand up guy!!! Hope you heal soon & to the other Officer...I hope you heal soon also! I know that you must be hurting right now!!! Best of luck to you both!!!!!
Nice job officer,
That was nice to read instead of more funeral arrangements
I attended Brian's Emergency Self-aid class when Gurnee PD hosted it. What an awesome class!!! Bardsley puts on one hell of a presentation and helped me build a basic first aid kit I carry with me at work every day. What I liked most about his class is that it focuses on SELF-AID, so I learned how to apply a tourniquet and use an IBD (Israeli Battle Dressing) to treat various types of traumatic injuries. This class should be mandatory for all police offices. Best $ 100 I ever spent.
Good job Brian. I've never met you but from what I've just read, you are a class act. I would gladly work with you any day of the week and twice on Sundays! Get well soon.
Wishing you a full recovery. Stay safe.
When I heard that 10-1 call, I did what I always do and said a quick prayer. Thank God you will be okay. Officer Alaniz, what a great letter. I stand and salute you, sir. Someday I hope to shake your hand. God Bless you, your family, and the CPD family.
Funny, how Brian was told he was not good enough to be MSF and sent back to the 10th dist by a lying POS lieutenant, SL.
Brian, we all miss and love you man. Losing you a month ago over SL's petty pussy bs was hard to swallow. You showed him you were a real man by this letter. I hope he's pissing himself!
-JD msf
Brian,
You epitomize what a good police officer should be. Your letter hopefully will embarass the people who recently slighted you in MSF. It takes all kinds my man. We miss you!
To paraphrase Pantera...you gotta drag the waters some more, Bro. Their are some guys out there with hidden agendas and motives and it's up to guys like you to figure them out. You're a leader and it shows. Perhaps it's those qualities in you which make you a threat to men of no spine?
You will always be a Brother in Blue to me. I am proud to hold the "line" with you.
Keep in mind you only live a few away, so do not hesitate to call if you need anything...groceries, conversation, helping hand.
That's what we do. Bleed Black. Rock on!!!

The state of Illinois wants to borrow money to help all the pension plans- the new Republicans will not be on board they want the pensions cut. The Democrats will not be able to overcome. Only one under 10 years look at your a target.
When I heard that 10-1 call, I did what I always do and said a quick prayer. Thank God you will be okay.
Really they called in a 10-1 WHY????
WAs their an offender on the loose or was the offender a follow PO??????
Officers used to know what a 10-1 was but not any more, the goof balls are the goof balls. scary dudes.

I'm sure this is a fine product and all, but I'd just like to remind everyone that a tourniquet should only be used as a last resort to save a victim from bleeding to death. Using a tourniquet will almost always lead to amputation of the affected limb below the site of the tourniquet.
Hey Brian, so glad you are doing alright. Make sure you make a full recovery and relax. You were a great guy when I met you back in 2001, and sounds like this job hasn't changed you a bit. (ww 01-09)
Brian was a class act when I was in 010 with him. He always had a joke and always stayed positive. Please get some good rest and get healthy quick.
God bless you!!!!!

This is ABSOLUTELY incorrect. A limb that has had a tourniquet applied is completetly viable for up to 6-8 hours after application. In a City where medical response should be measure in minutes, the possible life saving control of bleeding completely overrides the incredibly small chance of limb loss.
If you are going to post about a piece of equipment that could save an officers life, do your d**n homework.
To Officer Alaniz,
I live in 010, (1034's Beat) and I am proud to have you as one of the officers working in the district in which I reside!
From your letter of thanks I can see that you are a stand-up guy and class act!
I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery!
Thank you for your service and the hard work that you do to try and keep me safe!
-- from a very grateful 010 District Citizen
We heard the ISPERN broadcast in the western burbs and had you in our thoughts and prayers. Good luck and good job to you and all involved CPD that night.
Glad to hear you are out of the hospital and on your way to a full recovery. Blessings to you!
For your wife, please let her know that we are also praying for her during this trying time. The stress she is feeling to be upbeat and positive for you right now will take it's toll on her emotionally, and I would like her to know that she is not alone. If there is ANYTHING at all that she needs, please, please, please have her email me at mimiclaeson@msn.com.
As trying as this situation is on you, Officer Alaniz, you at least have the support of your fellow officers. Spouses generally don't have this network of support to draw from and it can become quite lonely and isolating to try and deal with this on your own. Know that she is trying to be strong for you and does not want to burden you in any way. Please let your wife know that there are people out there who are there for HER if she needs it.
It takes a special kind of person to be the wife/husband of a police officer. We are a tough breed! But sometimes we need to lean on others, and this is one of those times. Please know that you can contact me day or night, for any reason at all.
Blessings to both of you right now. And thank you, Officer Alaniz, for your sacrifice for our safety. You are a true credit to the profession!

---
WRONG. You can keep a tourniquet on for up to 4 hours without ANY damage to the affected limb. I'm sure you can get the patient to a trauma center sooner than 4 hours. Get a CAT tourniquet (or a SOF tourniquet, basically the same thing).
Glad you are OK bro. What disturbs me though is the lack of understanding some have of first aid. I carry a tourniquet and a compression bandage in my cargo pocket for these very reasons. Both are lightweight and I don't even know they are there. Lessons are always learned out of war, and Iraq and Afghanistan have shown us tourniquets DO NOT cause limb loss if applied for a shorter period of time, which in our urban area it always will be. So if you have a heavy bleeding wound to a limb, apply tourniquet a few inches above, then apply heavy direct pressure to the wound. Now worst case scenario is if the limb is lost, the likelihood of death without this action is probable.
Brian thank you for looking at the positive in all this and not the negative. That's a great trait. Prayers go out to you and your family while you heal.
The first aid class is through Spartan Tactical Group. Here is the link. http://www.teamspartan.com/teamspartan_firearms_training_EMERGENCY_SELF_AID_FOR_LAW_ENFORCEMENT_OFFICERS.htm

Hope you get well soon! But take your time coming back. I hope the officer that you worked with on the incident is doing well too. It will be difficult for both of you. But remember you have the full support of the working men and woman of this police department! I think he owes you lunch for at least 3 months!lol. Both of you take care and God speed.
Now, this is class....

Seriously? Brian was told he should leave MSF? What tool told him that?
Lt. Sean L. at MSF is an ASS .... Thats all I have to say about that !
Another civilian grateful for your service! I'm glad you are well, and I hope your family is too. I'm such it's impossibly stressful for all, and I'll continue to say prayers for you, your wife, and your extended family.
Ofc. Alaniz...
A small but classy gesture!
Two fingers of 20yr old Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon and a clink of the rock glass to you.
Take your time and heal. The circus will still be in town when you get back.
Get well Officer! Glad to hear you are going to be all right....and to the Officers that used this thread to make BS comments like when to call a 10-1, who should or shouldn't be Sgt, or the tournaquet question, show some damn resepect for this Officer and thank God he is alive.
Kid, You are aces ! You make us old vets proud with your words.
Get well brother and God bless you and your beloved family.
30 plus yr. vet.
Kid, I gotta say you sound like a prince in the making. I hope all is well. Take your time and heal properly. We'll hold your front row seat to the greatest show on earth til you get back. Some day you'll look back on this and laugh, udderwise y'd cry. Take care and God bless.

Cheers and accolades to you my friend. I couldn't agree with you more. This young cop stands out as a leader and bright spot during the dark days of this fine department.
Two clinks, scratch that, three clinks of the rock glass to you ... as a 20 year vet workin the wagon, I've seen enough heartache to drive this old man to drink a bottle of vanilla extract; dead children, headless torsos, and enough 1811's to make your head spin, but after reading this young lad's letter- it renews my faith in what my dad always said about this fine department...stay blue, watch your six, and stay classy my friend..
20 year wagon man....
Sorry for the delay my good friend. Let's get together and talk about the good ol' days. Email me when you get a chance. Maybe you can drop anchor between jobs and we can grab a cup o'joe and a polish. God bless. Stay blue.
