Get Me Outta Here!

  • A man who was shot in the shoulder in the Rogers Park neighborhood Tuesday night hailed a taxi to take him to a north suburban hospital.

Someone shot the 25-year-old man about 7:15 p.m. in the 1600 block of West Howard Street, according to police News Affairs [...].

The victim then hailed a taxi, which took him to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, News Affairs Officer [...] said. He was reported to be in good condition when he arrived at the hospital.

Either the ambulance ride would have been too expensive or the taxi driver knew Illinois Masonic was on bypass.

The Howard el station has always been a dangerous place mostly at night. Its been that way since I was a kid in the 1970s. We locals from Rogers Park refer to it as the "Jonquil Jungle." The city spent a lot of $$$ in economic developmwnt in the area. And the result was no improvement in the area. Use caution when traveling in the area. Watch your 6.

From 1600 W Howard, Saint Francis is the nearest hospital (by a pretty wide margin), just over a mile away.

Illinois Masonic is 7.8 miles away.

Just a Civilian (who lives about 4 blocks from Saint Francis).

St. Francis is 5 minutes away and usually gets most of the ER traffic coming from Rogers Park and West Rogers Park. Trust me, the folks at St. Francis are used to seeing anything and everything from Rogers Park.

ALS Ambulance $1200 or $25 cab ride. But if you are on public assistance you call for ambulance even if the hospital is across the street.....wht not its FREE!!!!! Even for a band-aid. How about some CO-Pays. Even $20 will reduce this nonsense. Stop rewarding laziness!!!!!

And I feel so sorry for the families that have to leave Cabrini Green. I mean they have been there 20+ years for FREE!!!! OH WAIT.......SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR FREE

Several years ago, even from Pratt and Western. Chicago ambulance took relatives to St Francis. Can't remember if it was $300 or $600 each for two toddlers. But given the proximity of 1600 W Howard, I'd probably opt for a <$10 cab fare instead of a multi hundred dollar ambulance fare for a non-critical injury.

Not uncommon to have an "Honor Student" with a few holes in him dumped in the E.R. Drive at Little Company of Mary by his buddies after a night of hellraisin' in Roseland,Gresham, or Engelwood either. They "care too much" to dump him at Roseland, Holy Cross or the Barnyard.

St Francis is often the hospital people are taken to from Rogers Park, it's on Ridge a couple blocks north of Howard. It's the closest hospital to 1600 Howard by far.

Responding officers calmly explained to this "victim" that his indebtedness to city would prevent them from calling an ambulance as city services are now being restricted to taxpaying, contributing city residents. And no, he was not going to be able to pay upfront with a handful of commingled tens and twenties as if he was buying a bag of flaming-hots and a grape pop from the corner store.

I'll bet he didn't pay the cabbie either.

Last time I saw a bill from one of my level I trauma patients from CFD for transport it was $700 flat and $200 for the L and S. If I remember correctly, it was a GSW.

@12:16 AM

Back in the early 80's when CTA wanted to close the Jarvis L, we started a campaign to keep the station open because of the facts you mentioned. Managed to get David Orr, Woody Bowman, and Art Berman on our side (no, I don't have any clout, thanks for asking). Some CTA executive mope kept complaining to the media that more people signed the petitions than daily station use suggested, but fortunately for us, it was pretty slow for news, so the CTA hearings got heavy coverage in print and on the tube...

Oh come on guys! The north side of Howard St. IS "north suburban" Evanston. And St Francis Hospital is only a couple of blocks from where the guy was shot.
