No Christmas Cigars

  • If you tried to order Cuban cigars by way of Switzerland, your prized treat could be on its way to being destroyed by customs agents.

More than 30,000 illegal Cuban cigars have been seized at O’Hare Airport in the last two weeks, according to Customs and Border Protection.

Cigars or any product of Cuban origin are illegal because of a U.S. embargo. But buyers have tried ordering the cigars through Swiss sellers that ignore the embargo.

We imagine there has to be tons of stuff that can be ordered through middle-men and shipped across the states like this. Someone study said that around 99% of the modular cargo containers coming into this country are un-inspected by any investigatory authority. That's frightening to say the least, but hey, a bin full of cigars? That's what passes for a big deal?

With the advent of the internet, trafficking in certain goods from one country where they're legal to other countries where they aren't is becoming an issue. A perfect example of this is firearms silencers.

While in here in the US they're heavily controlled (contrary to popular belief, this has nothing to do with reasons suggested by Hollywood movies. They were reclassified during the depression because poor people were using them to poach game) in other countries- England, for example- they're not controlled at all. You can walk into a gun shop and buy a 'sound moderator' without about as much hassle as if you were buying a scope.

They are particularly popular amongst people using high powered airguns. The problem? That .22 caliber 'airgun moderator' from England is *exactly* the same thing as a .22 caliber firearm silencer and the BATF makes no distinction. Airgun aficionados in the US were purchasing them from overseas and having them shipped here without giving it much thought- fabricating all manner of rationales as to why there wasn't any problem with it- until one of them finally got nailed possessing one and sent to the poke.

In the last month, I've had packages shipped in from Taiwan, Germany, Italy and England, all via internet shopping. Isn't it funny how much smaller the world is getting.

When they told you to be on the look out for illegal cubans, they meant humans not cigars.

I saw it: Montecristo No. 2 torpedoes, Cohiba Siglos, Romeo y Julieta 9-inchers, Hoyo de Monterrey double coronas, Bolivars, ad infinitum.

What a waste! They'd sure go well with a aged single malt scotch for the holidays.

That stupid embargo. The government could auction them off for several million dollars for taxpayer coffers. But nooooooooooooooo.

We need to drop the embargo on Cuba; it hasn't changed their political leadership at all. The best thing to do that is by flooding that tiny Island with what beats communism best: free-market capitalist business! Hotels, Spas, tourism, etc. will bring communism to a halt. It's accomplished that pretty much everywhere else.

I for one am outraged by this blatant disregard for American laws and values. I am so angry that I will volunteer to work o'hare special at straight time to assist in the destruction of this most heinous of cargo in a series of small fires. I will not stop until this task is done. Who's bringing the bourbon? Maurer has gotta be pissed that he missed this one.

OFF TOPIC from Chicago Breaking News:
"SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - A Wisconsin woman is accused of biting off her husband's tongue as he was giving her a good night kiss.
..the husband and wife were singing Christmas carols when paramedics arrived...the woman, in her late 50s, threw a coffee cup at them.

Polices say the man didn't want his wife arrested. But, she was taken into custody on possible charges of mayhem and domestic violence."

with the way thing have been moving in this country the past two years, just be glad we are even still taking a stand against communism. even a small one like this

don't forget the embargo was created because of how the commies murdered their way into power and terrorized a population. has the cuban government ever mended their ways or apologized? no

Cannot let those commies make any money, or Castro might be in power forever. Oh, wait. . .

Cannot do business with a communist country! Oh, wait, unless it's China. . . oh, wait. . .

The Cuban Embargo is one of the key examples of the stupidity of American politics. It accomplishes nothing substantive except keeping Cuban "exiles" in Florida happy.

Years ago I used to buy my cigarettes from Europe they were only $10 a carton.Lasted about 2 years via the internet.

One day I get a letter from the ATF saying they confiscated my cigarettes in New York, and they gave me 3 options,

1.File an appeal with the ATF.
2.Have my lawyer contact their lawyer.
3.Forgetaboutit,and never do it again, and they keep the cigarettes.

I took option #3.

I made a suggestion to Mr. Brian Bell, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at O'Hare International Airport. [(312)983-9145]. I requested that he contact his superiors in D.C. for approval to ship the entire seizure of Cuban cigars to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As a proud American, I disagree with our country's embargo against Cuba. Why do we have this embargo? Just because a bunch of wealthy elite Cubans in Florida want it?

My brother owns a business in Florida that would benefit if the embargo was lifted. He would benefit, America would benefit and Cuba would benefit. Once they get a taste of what life is really like with free markets and trade amongst nations, they would be crazy to go back to their communist ways.

The way to defeat ideas/philosophy (communism is a philosophy/idea) is with a better idea/philosophy. What better idea do we have than free market capitalism?

But 8 million illegal Mexicans sucking our economy and social services dry, hand off that shit, this is a sanctuary city buster!

There are still Cuban "exiles" or their descendants who think they have claims on their nationalized property, like cigar factories, that were seized when Castro took power over 50 years ago.

Let's make about 2000 of those freaking cigar makers from cuba citizens. They're sneaking in here anyway on rafts every day. We'll lock them in a factory, get them rolling and start selling those little bitches (the cigars, not the rollers) by the dozen. They'd outsell cigarettes in no time. Put America back to work I say!

Not that I endorce smoking in any form, but someone told me that Coach Mike Ditka donated a large number of premium cigars to soldiers serving in Afganistan and Iraq. The trick was that you had to visit the chaplain to get a cigar. If that is true, thanks Coach.

Send them to our military overseas.
